  • In this episode I go kayaking the Monocacy river in search for aggressive smallies. Small-mouth thrive in running oxygenated water with rocky river beds. Fortunately Maryland rivers have the perfect habitats for smallmouth to thrive. I fished the river a couple of days and struggled to find them on the first day; however, I was able to catch plenty on the second day. Make sure to subscribe for more Maryland fishing content.

    Love smallie fishing! I was really hoping the cat was a giant smallmouth for you. Nice video.

    I’m glad you visited the Monocacy. It’s easily my favorite MD river and can be very rewarding. That catfish put up a good fight for you. I’ve always bank fished or wet waded there, but I finally took my new yak out there a few weeks ago. Hope you give it another go.

      Yeah I’ll definitely kayak the Monocacy again, but probably a different section. You got a new yak!! Nice👍🏽 I hope you catch some biggins with it!

      @@Jonalexxx Thanks. I’ve already managed some nice ones at Triadelphia. The Monocacy is the only other fishery I’ve yaked. Little Seneca might be next. Catching a snakehead on a yak might be crazy. Anyway, looking towards your next video.

    Great video, looks like a great day. Where are some good access points for this river. I've never tried a kayak but looks like a good time.

      Kayaking it’s a great time you should try it. I’m not so sure about other access points on the Monocacy. It was my fish time on that river. I dropped in at the Dickerson Rd bridge, but idk about other access points.

    I usually float the north branch of the potomac but up there this time of year you are much better served fishing at night with a jitterbug or hula popper. I really want to do the monacacy again though it's really pretty and the only time i floated it i caught a ton of smallies.

      Yeah the river is beautiful there! I’ve never night fished before, but it would be a fun experience. I tried the hula popper 2.0 at the river that day but caught nothing on it.

      @@Jonalexxx night fishing during the summer is really good if you are looking to catch bigger smallies. You won't catch as many as in the morning but the ones you do catch will be bigger! I've never had any luck with hula poppers, jitterbugs, or buzzbaits during the day but they are really good at night. especially buzzbaits, I think buzzbaits scare the smaller fish bc i've never caught a smallie less than 12 inches with one. Good luck!

    I've been wanting to try the Monocacy but I'll need to find a good wading spot. Also, I don't mind fishing in the rain. I'm usually standing in the water anyway. But as soon as I hear thunder, I head for the car.

      Yeah thunder is dangerous I was too far gone up the river to get out quick tho. You should try it! It’s a beautiful place

    is it safe to be on the water when there is a thunderstorm?

    • @Jonalexxx
      @Jonalexxx  Před 2 lety +1

      Definitely not! You should seek shelter! It was a fleeting storm and most of it missed me, but yeah you shouldn’t fish in a thunderstorm.
