  • Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. Couple things: First, we were in the path of totality here in northern Maine, and it was amazing...awe-inspiring and very emotional, which I didn't expect. We didn't see crescent shadows here, we had elongated shadows, which made your shadow on the ground look much taller than it ever does. within about 15 minutes the temperatures dipped about 15 degrees and it was like early nighttime. Very eerie, but also overwhelming and miraculous. Isn't nature amazing?!?! Secondly, as far as living intentionally, my children are grown, but I have my elderly mother living with me, and with her fragility, it is more important than ever to make sure that the things we are consuming are healthful and "real". Please don't ever be afraid of calling food without processing and additives and chemicals real, no matter what the comments say. When they are selling foods made with wood pulp, people need to be informed!

Here too. So totality that it was dark for a couple minutes. The birds went quiet and there was an eerie ness. It was almost like twilight that is how dark it got. Our family is scattered but all within the path of totality so we were texting and sending pics. The local village was packed with 1000s of people not from here. I had to go to the post office so I was glad the parking out front was blocked off for customers. 😅 The next one on this path is in about 400 years so it was a great once in a lifetime event to share.

Only partial here but 20 minutes away. TOTAL. I noticed straight away the daylight change out the window, no birds, and it cooled off big time. Blue sky yet the colour was just eerie. It’s like the moon was to my towns left - giving us everything except the full covering - I ended up turning on the light too.

There is a convenience of cooking food and not having to trade my time, gas, and energy to go to a restaurant and spend a fortune for a sub par product. Having the ability to prepare food is truly a blessing. I raise a small garden and give extra to my neighbor and relatives. I really appreciate your videos on your farmers table channel and another youtube channel Acre Homestead. You ladies are a blessing.

You are so right about our food. I can remember my Grandma (born in 1912) saying, “if we didn’t grow it, we didn’t eat it”. Also, remember growing up as a kid and momma and daddy planting a huge garden every year. We bought quite a bit at the store but a whole lot less than the average household now a days. Trying to get back to it myself.
Thankful to have a Mennonite community close by to supplement what I can’t do.

We live just outside the path of totality by a few hours so we took the kids and went camping to be in the path of totality. We camped at a farm and it wasn't the super crowded craziness due to the camp location we chose. It was nice and man, that was an experience. The birds going up to roost, viewing the eclipse without the need of glasses, the temperature drop...all of it. I will never regret spending the time and making the arrangements to go.

Jess it IS hard to constantly grow, cook and eat healthy food.
But we choose it because we know the alternative is full of chemicals and toxins
    That’s what drives me.
Plus I really enjoy gardening! It’s peaceful. Grounding.
    Have a wonderful week!

That's so sweet that you are showing the people who couldn't see the eclipse! I was ssooooo lucky to be in Vermont, (along with about 160,000 visitors) and was able to share the eclipse with my partner and his family, friends, my son and his friends, and a few other folks who stopped on the road outside my house to watch. At the moment of totality, everyone went quiet, and it was like night. The birds started roosting, all our robins and nuthatches and such. The sun was AMAZING, and we could see the flares around the edges, some were gold and yellow, and a few were red! It was a very emotional moment. It felt very LARGE, like we were one with the universe and after all the flooding last year, and the long, hard winter, Mother Nature was gifting us with something so incredible. It was only a minute and 45 seconds, but it was so still. then, it started getting light again. I know you know Morgan Gold, and he put up a really neat video about his farm, and how the animals there reacted. He's about 45 minutes away from our farm. Bless you for sharing your experience with us, Jess. Little Socks is adorable.💕

I am in my mid 60s and realizing I'm not able to keep the pace I once did. Cooking dinner seasonally from scratch has been a challenge. I find myself wanting to grow the food and hand it off to someone else. I can't imagine how it must have been for women who not only had the meals to grow, prep and cook--they had to do EVERYTHING from scratch. Can you imagine meal prep on laundry day?? They probably got up before daylight to start the fire in their wood stove to fix breakfast, heat water to wash dishes and laundry, bake bread and biscuits,--we are so spoiled with our modern appliances! Imagine life without paper towels! They probably had a whole load of laundry in just greasy kitchen towels. It made sense to have large multi-generational households. Wow!

Thank you for the reminder that we are living in a counterculture way. I thought this morning that I would make pizza for dinner but forgot we were out of cheese. However, I should still have time to make some before dinner! And it will be way more satisfying to eat pizza with homemade cheese tonight, then to swing by the store and pick some up.

I was able to be in Idaho in the path of totality for the 2017 eclipse, and this time we went camping in eastern Missouri and then drove an hour to get into the path of totality. It is so amazing to experience and I've been blessed to see it twice in my lifetime 😍
I really can't fully describe what it's like but that eerie feeling you had intensifies and everything gets as dark as twilight, and you can look right at the sun. Crickets chirped and birds went silent and it got much colder! There's a point right before 100% coverage where you can suddenly not feel the sun shining on you anymore even though it still appears sunny outside and there are shadows on the ground. I was also able to see, as the sun reappeared, how the west side of the sky was light and the east side was dark. I could literally see the shadow moving away from us. So amazing! 🤩

We always made a point of celebrating sky events with our kids-eclipses, star showers, comets, and even back when Mir and the International Space Station were docked together, we watched them cross our night sky. On Monday, I shared eclipse viewing with my husband and one of our sons-in-law in our garden. Our son watched it with 2 of our grandkids, which made me so proud. This one was less dramatic than in 2017 but still completely worth our attention.

What a difference a year makes! One year ago (April 9, 2023) we were just at the cusp of digging the foundation for the new home we rebuilt after our farmhouse burned down. One year later its not finished (is it ever really finished?) but it is entirely comfortable as I work on all the little touches. A cupboard built into a wall with the doors from the first tv my husbands family had (big console), a peninsula with reclaimed floorboards from the farmhouse, hanging all the salvaged doors.....you get the idea. BUT, this has all happened in a year! What a whirlwind. Fasten your seatbelt and hang on!

Absolutely perfect view of the Totality in Northern Vermont. Blue sky, 60+ degrees and it felt like all of New England came to my little rural county. Absolute grid lock for about 6 hours of mass exit. One way in, one way out.

We were in the path of totality in southern Indiana. We had the day off of school and work. I spent a fantastic morning batch cooking for our upcoming busy spring, then went up to our park where our town had an eclipse party. Then the afternoon was spent helping our priest butcher our roosters to make chicken curry and planting onions. A lovely day! So happy we could experience the eclipse together. My favorite part was that it looked like a sunrise the entire 360 degrees around me on the horizon.

I was in the path of totality in 2017 in Oregon. I was up on my parent's property which is on a hill overlooking Dallas Oregon. I remember noticing all the shadows of the leaves were strangely curved just before and after, and when it went dark and we could see the full eclipse it was like twilight. Being up on the hill, we could hear people from town cheering and some people lit off fireworks 😅 it was just like there was a big highschool football game going on,because I'm pretty sure the high school football stadium was full of people. The home team side of the stadium faced the event so it would have been a great opportunity for the school to have a little extra fundraising event!

We drove from Slidell La to Tyler TX (6.5 hours) to stay a few nights. On Monday, we drove about 40 minutes north to Lake Fork at Minnow Bucket Marina. Seeing how the sky was much clearer to the north, we left and went to a church property near Yantis. My first Totality, and my sister and my husband were with me. It was very cool. We're physics nerds.
I had noticed a bale of hay in the next pasture. After Totality had ended, I noticed that the cows had come back up the hill! No one was home to explain what happened. 😂 They were looking to me for an explanation! They just stood there waiting for their farmer to milk them or put them up for the night, even though it was bright again by that time.

On the thought of our fore-folks spending so much of their time on sustenance...I've had a wave of sheer panic thoughts of "what if this was the only way to feed my family" when harvesting a nubby single carrot, or watching bugs overrun my zukes. Socks is such a cutie. I missed the eclipse because I was working.
I remember my grandparents growing the same thing every year - corn, potatoes, and tomatoes. My grandmother canned tomatoes and corn. I remember the potatoes being stored under the house and lasting them through most the winter.

So glad you all got at least the partial eclipse! We had total eclipse here... it chilled down, birds went quiet, street lights came on (was darker than I expected) and you could look straight at it without the glasses (just for that brief minute). Mesmerizing!!! So happy for the new calf... he is so cute! Blessings on your day Kiddos! 🌻🐛Carolyn in Ohio 🌿

We were in the path of totality near Cedar Park Texas and it became a neighborhood event in our cul-de-sac as we passed around the one pair of glasses we had!😂 One of the neighbors remarked on how quiet it was all the sudden, traffic all but stopped, the birds stopped chirping, and it was like a part of our world came to a stand still to admire God's glory. ❤ It was downright eerie seeing it almost dark and so cool seeing how just a slight sliver of exposure to the sun created sooo much light, as it started to uncover. Incredible experience and fun to share with people we live among. As we were all standing and admiring, the smallest one (2 yrs) said, "SCIENCE!" it was so sweet. He was right, the evolving wonder of God's miraculous mark on our world was amazing and very much part of REAL science. Science is embedded within God's creation/word & we got to see that on beautiful display, without a single man involved in making it happen. 😊❤

Was able to travel back to Waco for the eclipse (grew up there and still have family there). I've been in 80-90 percent eclipses before but the totality was surreal. The aura around the moon was visible to the naked eye and was absolutely mesmerizing (got a pretty good picture of it). I cannot imagine what the people that observed it before modern times thought about what was happening. Once in a lifetime event for me for sure. Best part was I got to share it with my dad.

We live in Northeast Ohio, east of Cleveland, and we were in the path of totality. It was one of the most amazing things I've ever experienced in my 70 years. The drop in temperature and that bluish, haziness before and after, were very interesting. Check that off the bucket list! Blessings, Marie

Dallas tx. It was amazing. We didn’t think it was going to as wonderful as it was. It went as dark and 10 in the middle of the day. With a white light ring . The birds that were flying kind of lost their way a little and a red wasp kept bumping my head like he was lost. And it went dead quiet. Was eerie. But wonderful.

We were in the path of totality but had partial cloud cover and got to see some of the phases. The coolest thing was the darkening , it was totally dark (fortunately no light pollution ) and then minutes later lightened. Some of the chickens went into the coop, others stayed out and roosted on their outdoor perches. Amazing, now we wait until 2044!

Every time you show clips of family things it reminds me that I need to do that more with my family - recording fun moments on video is so great 😊 We weren’t in the path of totality but got to see the crescent shape like you - we were in the high 80% range. My preschooler loved it. 🥰 Also I hope you were able to get some great photos of that sweet calf in the grass - I didn’t expect him to sit so still for you. ❤😊

I love your idea of letting food take over. I follow another Canadian CZcamsr and he calls it a food Forest. That’s my goal. Turning our little homestead into a food Forest. It will be an intentional chaos that will hopefully thrive.
I get jealous of your growing zone and often wish that we would be able to relocate. But then I remind myself that God created all the zones and we have a lot of amazing foods that are native to our zone 3-4 and I’m going to be a good steward of what I have.
    Thanks for the video.

We got a 95% eclipse, but my sister and her husband were in Clinton, Arkansas visiting his mother, and they were able to experience totality. I saw a total eclipse as a child, so I was happy with the 95% on Monday. The light was weirdly greenish, and the birds were singing their evening songs. So cool!

I live in the Pacific Northwest so no eclipse here. I haven’t seen an eclipse since I was in elementary school, probably 50 years ago. That was in the SE where I grew up. We did get a partial eclipse about 7 years ago here but I couldn’t get away from work to see it. I hope I get to experience it again in my lifetime. Socks is beautiful. I wish he would have been a heifer, too. With that sweet face and the heart on his forehead, I probably would have named him Cupid or something like that.

I'm in Cleveland, in the path of totality. I was out working in my yard because we had a lovely 72 degree (F) day. I just hung out while the eclipse was working its way to its peak and as the sky got darker and the house lights came on, someone nearby shot off some fireworks. So, I got a double light show. I could easily see the eclipse while fireworks were lower and to the left of it. It was really neat in a spooky kind of way. Not scary, just kind of eerie. Didn't last very long...about 3 minutes and then everything started going back to normal. :)

Congrats on the arrival of Hope’s baby boy! We were in area of VERY near totality of the eclipse (I watched it from windows at work in a hospital in Albany, NY). It was an estimated 97% coverage here! I also remember watching the one in ‘94 when my 1st 2 boys were young-and you’re right, there was a very odd hazy, overcast feeling in the sky during the peak of the eclipse!

Hey Jess! Love how pretty your farm looks already! Here in Canada, the snow is just all about melted and my garlic is coming up. You'll love Jerusalem Artichoke! We had a native couple come teach us about their plants at my school, and they told us that you should cook them before eating because you'll have a sore tummy. I grow them at home and I stake mine because they flop over in high winds and lots of rain. The deer even eat them!

The weird shift in the environment during the eclipse (close, but not totality here) felt so familiar. It bugged me til I realized, it's that same eerie shift you feel right before a bad tornado. Just kinda kooky.
