Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you're here.

With children, the days are long, but the years are short.
So true! What a great way to put it.
Both seem to go fast for me 😩
"The days drag on but the years fly by."
🎉 either way ❤
My 13 year old will say this every once in a while. It's bitter sweet
Kids: I remember the year that my son would be heading off to university and I was in a parking lot watching some family load up a truck with furniture for (assuming) their son who was heading away to school and I started bawling and sob-cried for half an hour.
Two years later, after settling my daughter into her new home, as I headed back to my “empty nest”, I was sad for two minutes and then did a happy dance as I entered my own new life journey .. that happy dance was totally unexpected as I had not even thought of my own life until that moment.
Parenting .. sheesh - an emotional roller coaster
One of my favorite parts of my day is unloading the dishwasher with my one year old (almost two!!! 😭) because he hands me every dish and tells me what each one is. “Spoon! Bowl! Cup!” He’s just so proud that he knows the names! And at the end he asks, “Helpful?” And every time I tell him, “SO helpful!!” And he just gives the biggest grin. It takes literally twice as long but it’s so worth it.
I love that you are so open about your faith, in your videos. That is part of why I enjoy your blog so much. You inspire me in many ways.
I like your phrase “high hopes and low expectations.” I’m going to try taking that to heart with my seedlings because I’m ruining my joy growing plants due to high expectations… Thanks for allowing a cognitive reset!
YES 🙌 same here! She is my favorite garden/homesteader I watch. Her delivery is eloquent and so easy to hear with genuine messages from the heart ♥️ and land! 🙏🏼
I remember when u first moved to the new farm and Ben said he wanted baby goats to arrive in time for his birthday party with his new friends in March. Lol. U responded with "what a farm boy." Just precious!
Not me crying while doing the dishes listening to you talk about your boys and thinking of my own🥺🥹
I know it slows you down to film the milking, but I love it so much. I’d watch that every single day. ❤
As a young mom i thought 18 years plus would take forever to raise our four children born in ten years. My first grandchild was born when i was in my late 30's. Now 25 years later i am waiting for greatgrands. None in the near future but that doesn't stop me from anticipating 😊
Jess i have been enjoying watching your children grow up. Thanks for sharing.
You will love ❤ all these vlogs 10 years from now!!! My oldest girl has a baby girl now! 👶 so i'm time rich all the time now! I started a youtube channel because We live far away, so my children have a record of all our family favorite recipes when they were kiddos! love ya girl and your chill vibe. 😎
Sweet comment..
Good for you sharing your special children's lives with them..
My one & only son had my first Grandson (child) on Sunday March 17th 2024... Looking forward to this new season of our lives together as much as possible! We are 3.5 hrs apart, drive time..
Blessings to the new Grammas out there!
What a worthy endeavor! Speed isn't the priority.
Our fellowship just spent well over a year just studying the New Testament in depth - it was supposed to take 92 days.
The best thing is you're starting at the beginning!
Our Heavenly Father - Creator of the garden and all creatures great and small❤ Worthy of quality time❤
My husband reads through the Bible a lot. Me, I'm a slow reader. We are opposites in almost every way.
Yes, I agree. Life goes very fast. Thank you for sharing yours with us.
Time rich days that I spend doing my own thing are some of my favorites. Gardening, journaling, exploring the woods, napping on the porch and flower shopping in the spring are the best ways to spend those days 😊
I've tried reading through the Bible in a year many times, and I was finally successful a few years ago with the help of an audio version. I would sit and listen and take notes. I can't imagine reading through in 90 days.
Thanks for sharing part of your day.
Ben made me tear up, Jess 🥹 he has a heart like yours you know it? He’s such a sweetie
9:16 it’s the old saying of “the days are long, but the years are short”. It sneaks up on you so fast.
My oldest is having a difficult pregnancy, so she asked that our youngest (almost 15) move in and help with her toddler. All of a sudden, we are empty nesters! She’ll come back, but it’s really made me realize how close we are to really being empty nesters.
I can completely attest to the fact that it goes by fast! My baby turned 21 on Sunday. I feel like just yesterday she was just a little baby. I was blessed to get to homeschool her so I am so glad I had that extra time. The one piece of advice I have to new moms is to cherish every moment. The days can feel long but the years are oh so short! 😢
I've got frost or very near frost temps every night for the next 10 days. I saw all the buds on the trees and was so ready for Spring to be here. Now it is officially the first day of Spring and I have snow everywhere. Weather in Cleveland does not follow the formula agreed upon by the rest of us! 😀
I've been listening to Pastor Arnold Murray Shepherd's Chapel since 2016 and I have learned a lot I am legally blind and I believe that's one of the reasons why I never read the Bible but I learned a whole lot from being introduced to Pastor Arnold Murray he's very Southern Marine like my grandfather
Thanks for the time with the goats. They are some of my favorite people. Jess, it's not too soon or too late, in fact it's the perfect time to start praying for your kids spouses, wherever they are. Sioux and I had no sons, but when our girls were small, we lifted those young men up in prayer. We didn't know if at the right time they would choose to marry or not, but it worked with our faith. We have the two most precious son-in-laws anyone could ever get and we know that God was in their choosing. They are good husbands and fathers and both couples have been married over 20 years. And yes, the time does fly.
How these cuties have adapted ❤...the love of Roots and Refuge Farm says it all 😊
I sooo understand. My momma maker graduated last year and went straight to the Navy 2 weeks after. I am cherishing every moment with my 9 yr old. It all goes by so fast.
I love how you scooped Wit up like a small child!
I love the Cottage Garden area, the rock walkway, fountain, wind chimes tinkling, all the beauty popping up - oh so lovely!🌹🪻🌸🌺🌻
The whole Bible in 90 days? Wow! That would be tough. I’ve read through it several times and I always learn more and get something new out of it. I do the Bible in a year, and that winds up being about 5 chapters a day. That is doable.
I love how you picked that goat up like a wayward child in the grocery store😂. Thank you for sharing your life with us! I have learned so much and have loved learning to make my waiting room my classroom!❤
Sweet time spent with you on your free time morning! Thanks, friend! Blessings to all 🤗🇨🇦
for some reason, while you were milking the goats my brain kept remembering the milking setup at the old farm--there was a lot of love that happened there, and I'm just remembering kids and kids watching over the gate
I can't tell you how happy it makes me that you got goats. I love goats, especially baby ones.
I got a green stalk! Finally available in the Netherlands🎉❤
You will enjoy your "adult children" is so many new ways!
I couldn’t even read the Bible through in one year when my church was doing that! I kept the check off list of all the chapters and finished it in two years. I felt like I was rushing too much to check it off the to do list and not really meditating on it like I needed to.
I felt the same Jess, as my kids started to graduate. I’m so thankful to still have one little that is just getting old enough to really enjoy coming along for chores and “helping” out.
I started on the 90 day challenge and I got to Psalms and just couldn't go any further. I can't get through the Psalms that much at a time. Since then I've been taking a book at a time. I just finished Danial. I'm not doing them in order. LOL Rebel that I am.
I ❤ the basket look and maple color! I have so many Greenstalks that when I told my husband he gave me ‘that look’. 😂 He’s replacing the last section of the tea garden fence in April and moving a raised bed the same week while he’s on spring break. There’s always a project happening, but such is this wonderful life! 😊
I love ALL Roots and Refuge Farm videos!
In the trenches of motherhood with my babies. I feel the time fleeting but I’m also so tired haha. I’ve done the Bible Recap several times now and really love it! I never imagined I would enjoy the Old Testament as much as I do now and I’m so thankful for resources like her podcast that make reading through the whole Bible feasible in this season of life!
I feel like I have a "Time Rich Day" Everytime I watch your channel. You are such an inspiration and joyful blessing to me. ❤
Enjoy your time-rich day Jess. That is so understanding😊⚘️⏳️🕰 🌈
That's a great Bible Study! Reading it fast doesn't do me any good. Wonderful way to start the day!
Wave that magic asparagus wand, Jess!❤😂
Yes the time goes by so quickly. My baby is 43 and my oldest is 45. I have two sons, two grandsons ( 21 & 16 ) and two granddaughters ( 15 & 10 ). I have been married 48 years. Time goes by so so so fast
I am exactly the same with my Bible study. I have multiple translations out along with desktop resources and I dig DEEP for context and cultural information. I keep binders on each book of the Bible and include various commentaries, printed maps, etc. I hope to pass them on to my children someday.
Hi! Just wanted to thank you for giving so much information for new gardeners like myself! Sooo many people I talk to about gardening have told me “no there are rules, you can’t do this that or anything” I think it would be cool for you to make a video testing “breaking the garden rules” to see what happens. Specifically growing seeds from grocery store produce. I’d love to see what actually works or not from an experienced gardener!
We're officially at the time of year when we have to carry our tomato (and anything else tender) into the house at night and back out to the greenhouse in the morning. I got all my trays back into the sunshiney greenhouse goodness, fully intending to check if any asparagus had sprouted. Then I saw the Purple Deadnettle was flourishing. I have Calendula sprouting in the understory of the foliage I left to overwinter. Of course, then I had to check out the day lilies, daffodils, and irises.
I forgot about the asparagus...until two hours later when watching this video! Thanks for the unintentional reminder, Jess!
I absolutely LOVE time rich days. What precious memories with Ben. ❤❤❤
I am so like you when reading the Bible, I can spend a couple hours in the morning reading just a few verses, then journaling and praying.
Such great advice for parents of littles! I have my first senior graduating this year as well. He has 4 weeks of school left and my heart is in a million pieces knowing he will be leaving for college so soon 😢❤
Hearing your animals hollering for you..... priceless 😂
*UM BOM DIA QUERIDA JÉSSICA UMA EXCELENTE MANHÃ PRA VC 🇺🇸👏🏻*
*VALEU TUDO DE BOM PARA VOCÊ CALIFÓRNIA🌟👏🏻*
Your garden bed area looks fabulous , even if mostly empty at this time. Always nice to visit Jess ,won't be long before your boys will all be finished school , and you will have a little more kid time in your family love pocket.I wanted to order a Green Stalk this evening , but the 104.00 delivery cost to Canada was too much for my mind to wrap around. Tell Green Stalk that they need to expand their business out to Canada , I think they would do a very good thing....
That is wonderful that you are starting to read the Bible from the beginning. I do it an few times a year. I sit with my morning chicory and read till it is empty. I get 2-3 times through each year.
I'm watching this as my little is filling my seed starting pots for me.
That was fun to really feel as if I was on the farm. Thanks.
Brings my childhood back yay.
And the older you get, it seems the years go faster and faster.
I wish they sold those greenstalks in Australia 🇦🇺 I would have those all around my garden and patio with herb and lots of strawberries 🍓 for my grandbabies to enjoy.
Officially a plant nerd. I gasped when I saw the basket weave.
I've heard there is another similar cold snap coming around March 29th or 30th. I will be watching for this.
I'm plant green with jealousy as we are at 27 degrees right now and it's snowing here in southern Minnesota.
That's awesome! I'm the same way reading the Bible, I just have to think and ponder and cross check and study and pray lol. I started a reading plan last year and had to let them go ahead. It's almost a year later and I'm halfway through Isaiah. But I've pressed in and kept going and it's been awesome.
I’m glad you got your goats back 😊
I love your hair today!!! 😍 this video made me smile this morning! I do love that greenstalk omg! Now i want one lol your goats are so beautiful too, btw. My heart is yearning for goats right now and watching you with yours tugs at my heart ❤️ God bless you on this beautiful day!
While it's snowing here in NY 😂 love watching your videos. Makes me more excited for the warmer weather
As a fellow mom, would you mind showing us what your homemade school lunch snacks consist of? This is probably more for the farmers' table than this channel. Thanks in advance ❤
Since the war started here, we formed a group of women to read the Torah in Hebrew and in English together via video chat for 15 minutes every morning, except Shabbat (when we don't use electronics). We read commentary along the way if a word or concept stands out to one of us. However, we are mindful of our time in order to keep up with the weekly portion according to the universal Jewish calendar. Our commitment to the group has really helped in staying consistent and has definitely enriched the Rabbi's weekly homily in synagogue. So, that's my suggestion on keeping a good pace: read aloud together with a buddy and set mini-milestones as you go. You got this! 💪🏻💕
That’s a beautiful way to connect with others as well!
@@RootsandRefugeFarm Definitely! I only knew one participant when I was invited to join. But after gathering for such an elevated purpose for more than 120 days, I feel like they are each my spiritual sisters and not just in name only. 💙
My wife loves your channel! Thanks for your content!!
Last week was in the 60s, this week it is high in the 40s. Looks the same for next week with lows of 20s through 35.
GM Jess
Expecting our first goat kid or kids any day. Thanks for the teaching ❤from eastern Colorado
I love that your pointer stick is an asparagus Stick!
Whoa! Reading the Bible through in 90 days is intense! Reading it through in a year is more my pace!
My son’s family gave me The Bible Recap. It is suppose to be a year-long, where you read so many chapters a day. Well, I read like you; notes, follow up, search this out, stuck on the same chapter three days in a role because it’s just to much for one day, much less share with another chapter. I am every bit of six weeks behind
I really really wish that Greenstalk sold in the u.k. We have equivalents but nothing that matches in terms of watering and quality
Lol! Your laugh is contagious 😂
Love it that while re-reading Genesis you are finding relatable information to permaculture. Would love to hear your thoughts and notes concerning the subject as related to the Bible at some point. Thanks Jess it’s such a pleasure spending time with you WWWeb style ❤
Your right, they grow so quick,my eldest grandbaby is a teen now..how did that even happen? So grateful for the years i was home working, farming ,being mum..though it didnt last, after divorce i was working 5 jobs to keep us housed and keep their animals..i miseed so much! Grateful for any minute i get with the grandchildren.
I used your code to get my very first green stalk! I’ve been waiting for a sale and I remembered your code from a previous video. Great deal! And I got the same color! I thought it was cute too. You read my mind about planting dwarf tomatoes in them. I’m also going to do some peppers. I’m so excited 😊
I didnt know about the challenge but i love that idea. I too get sucked in and am writing things downa nd highlighting all these verses. He is so good to us. I have learned this year how important the KJV is. God bless!🌱🌾
My son said he's play doh rich this morning!!! He got new doughnfor his bday a week ago ❤❤
Jess, there is a great podcast called Bible in a Year by Ascension Presents. I have listened to it twice now. Excellent podcast and CZcams channel for people of all faith traditions
I was "watching" in the background while multitasking.... it was quite a weird moment to hear you milking the goat and the turkey gobbling, as if you were milking the turkey instead! LOL
I told myself that I was just going to look at the new Greenstalks. Drool a bit, perhaps. That I didn't need one. That there is one literally in the mail on its way to my house (I bought myself a housewarming present).
Of course I ordered one. Of course I did.
It's like stopping by the pet adoption event just to look at the dogs.
I guess at least this won't end up stealing the middle of my bed for the next fifteen years.
I feel your emotions. My baby is graduating this may also and my oldest has already married and given me two beautiful grandbabies. A boy and a girl. Perfect!!! I cant believe how fast it has gone by either😢
I've done a 90 day Bible reading challenge, it was hard! And if you get behind one day it's so hard to catch up. But it's worth trying it just to make you start!
I should clarify, I succeeded once in reading the Bible in 90 days when I was a teenager and had nothing better to do at the time. I've tried a few times since then, after becoming a wife and mother, and have never gotten through it in 90 days again 😂
I want a green stalk so bad. Don’t have it in the budget this year though. Maybe next year. Love seeing the new design though, that’s super fun!
You are a beautiful inspiration in soo many ways Jess !! ❤
Yes it goes fast and once you start getting grandchildren they grow up even faster enjoy each moment you have.
Your goats are so cute, My grandmother had some goat's, I remember her using bagblam on her goats after milking because They get sores.
I definitely needed this today! Thank you ♥️
Such a lovely and peaceful garden.
Lol 😂90 days I hear you, I couldn’t do it. I actually listen to the bible because reading it puts me to sleep. I can play back the verses and take notes as I listen to it. Some would say listening is cheating, but most people were illiterate and only few could read a hundred plus years ago. So most of our ancestors used the oral tradition to learning it. Not cheating in my books.
Love to get more Greenstalk planters but they are expensive to ship across the border into Canada. We finally have distributors here. Their prices include the international shipping costs which is understandable, but a sale is hard to find. I’m going to have to take a vacation and go to the US to pick up a couple and stay long enough so the duty is covered. No free trade on this product for the common man or woman ….only a corporation gets a break. Something is wrong with this system.
Milking by hand is so calming. Thanks for sharing 😊
If you are wanting an awesome and very informative year-long study of the Bible, look into the Bible recap! I started in January and have learned more in a few short months than I have in my entire life. You can get as involved as you want. There are many ways to do it. I literally read the chapters for the day and watch a 5-7 minute video that recaps what I read. It's awesome!
I did the Bible in 6 months. Thought that was good! Lol
Love watching your videos!
Wow!! Wit has grown so fast!!!
I do wish we can have Greenstalk in Australia.
I was just checking in on you! Thinking about our Growing Gardeners VIP class 3 years ago!
Oh, Jess! I'm doing...or supposed to be doing...a buddy read of Moby-Dick, and even though I've read it three or four times I'm sooo stuck in the muck of must-do life I don't feel like I have space for it right now...but that's exactly why I signed on....Thanks for the perspective you give. 🐳
Thank you !
Our last frost date here in Tucson is March 15th. Last year our actual last frost was April 15th! A full month after the predicted date! Not sure what to expect this year! Hoping for the best! Blessings!❤
You waving that asparagus around like a magic wand at the end of the video was my favorite part. :)
