Designing a unique looking marking knife that's comfortable and works well was quite a challenge. I think I did it, and it was much easier to make the knife, then to design it. I wasn't confident that it would work out, so that's why I made a test one first. I reckon this knife making project turned out pretty cool though, and I was excited to make another.
I also thought it would be great to have a scratch awl and a marking knife all in one tool. I have a metal scriber that is two ended and I like that so that's why I went ahead with that idea.
I've decided to give the new marking knife to one of my supporters on Patreon as I don't need two marking knives and it's a chance to say thank you for their amazing support!
As always I'm happy to answer any questions.

I had to rewatch this because I just received my Pask Makes marking knife and it’s glorious! If you’re on the fence don’t be, I can’t describe how beautiful yet well made and freakin sharp his marking knife is! Thank you Pask, it’s beautiful and high quality and something I’ll cherish forever! I love that we can support you and your work as your contribution to the woodworking, welding and forging communities is tremendous and can’t be understated! I look forward to using this exquisite jewel in my garage and thank you for the plans that came with your marking knife! I will absolutely be building from your plans and with the help of my Pask Makes marking knife 🤘🏼
I just purchased one of these that you began to sell. It's OUTSTANDING.
Thanks very much and thanks for the support! :)
There is an advantage to leaving one side completely flat (no leather) for woodworking marking where the craftsman needs to run the knife along the flat side of a thick board to mark another board beneath. A more accurate mark is made as opposed to coming in at an angle.
I reckon one flat side also makes it easier to use it as a prying tool, if ever needed :)
That’s how I make my marking knives; wood on just one side so the flat back can register to whatever it’s being pressed against. Works out well.
@_ David _ no wai >:(
@_ David _ I feel you, I wouldn't wanna destroy my tools either but in a pinch you gotta do what you gotta do. 😅
Beautiful work - I think this should be your version of the Diresta ice pick! I want one.
I was thinking the same thing as I was watching.
We need this mass produced. Beautiful
Daniel Wahlig hopefully not as over priced
I want one too.
Made my own twist on one of these using this video as a tutorial for my father in law for Christmas. He loved it! Thank you so much for sharing this.
you have a incredible nice style for your projects, i really like the marking knife.
the last two days i tried to make a marking knive like yours and i am going to try the plane as well, very nice stuff!
Pask! Glad to see you're uploading more frequently :) I watch every video!
Pask that's awesome. Only advice I have is use contact adhesive instead of epoxy. Any epoxy or super glue can destroy the leather due to the exothermic reaction caused by the curing where as contact adhesive theres none and will stick solid. I'm a leather worker btw lol
You are an amazing craftsman and you’re always a pleasure to watch when you create something beautiful!
Nice looking knife. I do leather working and that handle is a nice touch.
Love the design man. Simple, functional and looks good
Great to hear your joining makers mob , look forward to seeing you along with the other makers
Really nice work - I'm going to think about using that old table saw blade I have for making one just like this. Really appreciate your commentary and craftsmanship!
Beautifully done. Every time I watch one of your videos I think to myself this man is a genius
Beautiful piece of craftsmanship. Love the shape and so simple to make. Love the videos, thank you
Sweet set of skills you got there. Always a treat to watch your vids.
Вы Мастер с большой буквы. С нетерпением жду Ваши видео. Такое терпение, такая обдуманность завораживает. Про сборки видео многие режиссеры позавидуют. Я Ваш фанат и мой лайк всегда. Учусь на Ваших работах.
It looks so good with that leather, I thought it was wood. Great job Neil. That's very inspirational cause now I want to take my chance in making one of this for me. Regards!
Lovely little marking knife! Your projects just keep getting better and better.

What a beautiful simplistic piece of art you made there once again! You keep amazing me!
Awesome make of an extremely useful tool! Thank for sharing your build!
Thank you for this video Pask! You tha man!! I'll make my version of this one.
Great video. I am working on a leather project now and the burnishing technique is definitely going to be helpful.
Oh, that's a beaut! I'm going to have to make one of my own, for sure.
Your projects are always absolutely stunning. Hats off to you sir.
Can't wait to give this one a go. I think I found what I will be making a few folks for Christmas this year!
As always, another great video of something very useful. Your creativity and ingenuity amaze me!
Dude. So clever. Ive never thought of using my 123 blocks as a grinding jig for my knives. Im so trying it soon. Thank you
Pask, YOU MAKE!! Beautiful!!
It is the accuracy of your work that never fails to astound me. The slightest difference in the grinding of the two bevels or curves, of even a tiny fraction of a mm, would stand out a mile yet it is perfect. You make it seem so easy when it really is not. Total respect!
Nice video, Neil. I made a marking knife a couple of months ago...handy tool indeed. Glad the leather is only thing that got banged up when the mop caught it!
Very beautiful piece you made. Thanks for sharing.
Another Amazing project Mate, looks great and such a sweet looking belt sander.
Beautiful work mate, as always! This one is definitely going onto my list of future projects :)

I can't wait to try and make this modified for my needs. Great project!
Great looking marking knife!
Привет братишка
another fantastic video and build ! Once again you proved what a versatile Craftsman you are !
I really like that and will have to try making one for myself. Great job!
I made one. If you make one you’ll be using it constantly. My favorite use is scraping corners of woodwork when restoring and painting. Worth its weight in gold. It came out great too.
Simple, elegant and effective. Neil's trademark. Hand tools are cool.
Awesome looking and totally functional. I'm going to have to have a go at one for myself.
It is a beautiful artifact. I'm also glad to see that I don't require a marking knife to make a marking knife.
Hello from France !
Very beautiful tool.
Thank you for this idea
É trabalhoso mas vale muito a pena, uma ferramenta única e também muito bem feita❤️
Abraço aqui do Brasil 🇧🇷
You have some really innovative techniques. Thanks for the info!
Well done, sir. Awesome work, great tool. Good pleasure to watch. Thank you
Excellent tool! I wish you would explain more what you are doing, the size grit sandpaper your3 using, etc. keep up the great work!
I'd buy one of those in a heartbeat!
They say that necessity is the mother of all invention. In wood working you need a good marking knife. But, when craftsmanship creates function and beauty, then it is artisan. Great job of both!
once again a another brilliant design , here too working beyond your comfort levels ,,,, kodoos
Beautiful woodworking tool...and rather wicked throwing knife!
It really is quite impressive how smart you are with tooling. Good Aye.
That's a really great looking marking knife. Good job
Nice!
I made a similair pair of knives from an old stanley plane blade that I split down the middle. The hardened part of the blade can be snapped in two with a vice and some pliers. The remains of the keyhole in the blade makes for a good finger groove.
One knife has a bevel on the right side only and the other on the left side, but they are stored in a double pouch so both options are are always availible.
(The one-sided bevel reduces the equally fragile and scary point on the marking knife.)
An easier project with no need for additional heat- treatment and a good use for a used-up plane blade.
That turned out great, you should really sell some of those, they would sell like crazy
Parabéns eu adoro seus vídeos, você é muito criativo e habilidoso
Gosto do seu capricho.
Wow. That turned out incredibly Neil. I didn’t realize the grips were leather after seeing this on Instagram but the makers mark should have clued me in.
Also congratulations on being included in the Makers Mob. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
It locks like an arrow head :D very cool marking knive and an unusual shape 👍
Gorgeous. I feel like the addition of a couple of brass rivets would look nice and help with the problem of the leather slipping when clamped.
Gorgeous tool!
Hey man you know what makes these videos so awesome.... you! .. you have it brother!
Thanks for the great content ; well worth crowd funding
It`s a pleasure watching you do that
Nice Work!... Beautiful
Very cool “original” design achieved! I love it!
What do you mean by "original"
A very cool, very useful marking knife. Thanks!
Stunning result I like very much the shape!
Great design! Love your sander.
Very nice work Neil. Handy tool and saves on pencils too 😁 Great video mate
Great work!
Received my knife today here in Finland. Beautiful piece of tool! 🇫🇮
I recently got my knife, I love it, very well made and very useful.
Awesome work Neil! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Great project. Thanks for posting it.
Hi, quick advice, if you want to make your touchmark to be embossed more distinctively, you can either slightly dampen the leather before punching it in, or heat your touch mark (not very much, probably somewhere between 150 and 200°C, I don't know for sure) and then just press it in. I personally prefer the latter for the touchmark. The latter, by the way, works not only on veg tan leather, but oil tan as well.
That's a really neat design, like it!!
Great thing. I wonder how well the leather will adhere over time. Very pretty.
Great job of the knife. Hardening and tempering are becoming a lost art and you were bang on. Perhaps 2 hours is a bit long I thought and it's important not to get any fingerprints on the surface once it's polished and before tempering. The colours are an important sign of achieving the correct temper. Really nice tool you made, thanks for sharing. Allan
Nice marker. Try shellac on the leather as a finish some time! You can always wax and buff it after.
Nice one. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
What I need is one of those with a broad handle for arthritic hands. Can’t get one anywhere!
Mate, how brilliant is that! 👍🏽
Love the design, and an added scratch awl on the other end, schmicko! 👌🏽
Beautifully elegant design!
Very nice, I've got a few old Stanley #4 and #4 1/2 plane irons that will be perfect for a few of these.
Beautiful job! I don't yet have a belt sander of the quality I would need to make this but one day I might give it a try. The real gem here came during viewing this video! I noticed, briefly, that you mounted a thien separator on top of a blue (food grade) plastic barrel (had to return and pause to be certain). I had been stressing since the company that sold me the one I bought to transport water for my daughter's horses had nothing I wanted (old cinnamon, cardboard, barrel) thinking the blue barrel I have and no longer use might collapse under vacuum but I realize that not much vacuum pressure would exist there anyway. I have a cheap Harbor Freight dust and chip vac that I will use with my now unused blue barrel along with a, yet to be built, then separator so I can free up my shop vac which is attached to my chip and dust collection shop routing which works great (3" PVC copper and node/screw grounded end to end to prevent static ignition).
i made one from an old saw blade that looked exactly like that but without the awl and wooden scales:)
Love it Paskie
Hey Neil, I think you have a beautiful design. I want one too! If you do a limited edition run, count me in!
impressionnant comme toujours alors toutes mes félicitations et des vidéos de plus en plus passionnantes un grand merci a bientôt .
Looks great I've got a few old saw blades. I will have to give it ago
Love it . Great job
Marvelous work!
Love it! Congrats!
Beautiful tool!
Your craftsmanship with scraps is amazing.
The handle in the thumbnail looked like wood to me.
>The handle in the thumbnail looked like wood to me.
Yeah, exactly my thought when I saw a photo on the instagram. =)
They look like they'd be lovely throwers.
Great awesome job Neil. I it's beautiful. 👍 👍 👍 👍 Wauuuuuuuuuuu
Martin 🙋♂️
Wow! Great work man!
I like ur style to mk Tools very very much. So practical so nice n easy but so so profesional... 💪👏👏👏
I have a Japanese marking knife. It is not to be careless around. The sharpneaa profile is similar to yours. It is sharpened on diamond and finished on leather.
It's a beautiful tool, well done
