I made this marking knife

- A marking knife is one of the most important tools in the woodworking shop. Precise joinery is nearly impossible without one.
While it is of course possible to just use any old utility knife, I think it is really worthwhile to have a dedicated marking knife that is nice to work with.
I recycled an old plane iron from a junk pile and shaped it into a slender blade that just feels good in my hand.
It is not the first marking knife I have made but certainly the best one so far.

I had no idea you could make a cool knife with minimal tools! I've been watching too much Forged in Fire 🔥
Using the wood block to make your bevel is absolutely genius just saying
I've watched many making a marking knife videos. I really liked this one. Thank you.
1:38 - HAHAAHA! Your editing makes it seem so effortless :-)
Valeu 👍 obrigado 😃 Bom vídeo, boa faça parabéns 👏 uma sugestão é fazer a lâmina de um lado somente , como uma faca japonesa.
Nice work. Simple, beautiful, useful, made by hand.
I admire your hand work (no machinery), old school!!!
Perfect job! Joy to the eye!
THAT is slick as hell, I gotta try this!
Excellent workmanship.
Your editing makes it look sooooo easy. :D

Thanks! There will be more.
Beautiful work
Superbe idée. Superbe travail. Merci beaucoup.
Looking to making one for me to ! Great Job !
Good work sir. I can not even cut the huge parts as well as you did to thin and small parts 😊👏👏👏
Wooow, that leaves a mark.
Awesome project
Good looking tool!
Tastefully edited, thank you
Super idea, very clear video. 👌
very nice! You make it look easy.
Lovely job
Thing of beauty! Expert hand skills, expert sharpening, expert resourcefulness, expert knowledge of material attributes and how to change them with heat. If you have an apprentice, he is a lucky young man/woman. I salute you, sir. (Also, the video was very well made.). I am subscribed :-)
Thanks!
Excellent!
Cool blade!!
Simple, beautiful and amazing. Good job
Thanks!
Exactly hand work very very nice
Very nice knife. I might have to try that.
Great job
Perfect job. Congratulations...
That was really nice
I can just hear Paul Sellers voice “into the nick. The knife wall just makes everything so accurate.” Nice knife for sure I’ll have to make myself one so I can mark far more accurately than I can currently build in wood.
I made a marking knife with that exact kirutsuke blade style not long ago!
Nice, job well done
J'ai adoré ! 👏👏
Great work! And I learned just enough to do this for myself as well. TY!
You’re welcome, thanks for watching!
If your going to use an old plane iron you'll need to soften the cutting edge. It's simple, just go on the web......
На коленке так сказать и классный ножик получился!!! 👍👍👍
Отличная работа. Попытаюсь повторить.
beautiful, and made with hand tools only, super!
Thanks!
Very well done. I hope I can find a blade like that this summer! 🙏 I thought you made a right blade, but it turned out so well! Columbus Michigan 🇺🇸
Thanks! You don’t have to wait for a blade logs je this. You can also just use a small strip of 1095 steel or something like that.
I would buy that for sure 😍
SUPER CONCEPT ! ! !
Thanks!
sweet knoife !
Very nice. Darlington, South Carolina USA
very nice work!
Beautiful. Wanna do this
Do it!
LOT OF THANKS FRIEND
You‘re welcome! Thanks for watching!
Very cool.
Bravo, bravo, best work and product, abs. respectful from old BG.
Thanks!
Remarkable
Beautiful build. Personally I would have only put a bevel on one side to make marking flush easier.
So cool !
Thanks!
Absolutely beautiful work! Elegant in its simplicity of design!
Thanks!
Никогда у меня не получалось так напильником работать.
Nicely done, subbed👍🏻
Sandpaper merchant sees a fat payday every time this guy comes into the hardware store
For a smoother result, it is better to use sandpaper with water. The scratches will then be less noticeable.
Yes, but it‘s also messier. Especially around wood it can cause mean stains. I guess it‘s a matter of taste.
@@imadethischannel My comment should be seen in general, no more or less than that.
It really has become a beautiful knife, you don't often see them like that.
Thank you!
Brilliant
really enjoy your channel man!
Thanks!
Nice knife.
Thank you very much for sharing this. Nice design and realization. I'm a bit surprised you beveled both sides of the blade (I'm more used to have one flat side).
Hey, thanks! I like a wide bevel on both sides that can be put flat against the work piece. I guess it is a matter of taste...
I was thinking too if one side completely flat didnt make more sense as well. However, I use both my hands a lot for most tasks, I wouldnt know which side to make flat :D
@@Nikkeftw Depends on you. I made one awhile back with the left side flat because I'm about useless with my left hand, it works for me.
Good idea uncle
A nice marking pen looks comfortable BTW it's possible that you make a pen for marking on iron copper bras or aluminium ?
Thanks! Yes, it’s possible. I think it would be called a scribe and the tip has to be very hard.
Eh…, dizer o que…EXCELENTE, adorei ver suas habilidades ❤️
Abraço aqui do Brasil 🇧🇷
Bravo 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
You made that "look" easy. You have some major skills. I'm on to you! 😂
Very nice, like it. 😍👍👍👍👍👍
très beaux travail .👍
Great!!!
Thanks!
Buen vídeo 👍🏻
This transformation has no hardness
Alrighty you got another sub. Question what is the brand and model number of that little depth Guage you use?
Thanks! Do you mean the ruler stop? That‘s also self-made: m.czcams.com/video/NoTRfE_XM3o/video.html
@@imadethischannel Yep, I watched that video yesterday. Nicely done
tolle arbeit, daumen hoch! 👍
Nicely
Great job. Thanks for sharing.
About 20 years ago I bought an xacto knife bit the handle is plastic and the blade is thin. I think this is a nice replacement.
Replacement is the wrong word, upgrade is a better word choice.
Excelente
If the apocalypse happens, I'll head your way.
Haha, then my led-lighting will probably fail as well.
Cool😎🙏
Almost zero electricity.
take my upvote
Should have ground the bevel on one side only. The flat side runs against what ever your using as a guide. Thus you won't have trouble keeping your line straight....just check out Rob Cosman's CZcams channel and type in Marking Knife in the search window.....
That is a very popular discussion. If you grind a large, flat bevel on both sides, you can put the knife flat against the work on both sides.
Great looking knife, is it based off a standard knife design or is that just something you came up with?
It just seems...'right', lol
Hey, thanks! It is not based on a particular design. But I am of course influenced by all the other marking knives out there.
Good work, but the marking knife should have a bevel on one side, so it is flush with a ruler or anything you mark against, this way, you can be imprecise depending on the angle you mark in or depending on the height of the piece you mark against.
Hey, I think that is not necessarily the case. This knife has wide, flat bevels on both sides and no micro-bevel. This way, it can be but flat against the work on both sides and score lines directly at the edge of a piece.
With a single bevel that would make a beautiful marking knife for layout.
With these wide and flat bevels it also works nicely as a marking knife that can be put flat against the work on both sides. The one bevel/two bevel thing is mainly a matter of taste, I think.
Great work, I would have kept the knife straight in one side, much better for marking but that is just me
Beautiful. Any reason you didn’t put some glue between the tang and the mahogany?
I was hoping the pin connection would be strong enough by itself. And it is. Still no movement.
@@imadethischannel I thought that it made a pleasant change to see a knife that was not glooped together with epoxy.
Sharp
which rasp have you used please ? do you have an URL for it ? tks
Most of my tools are from flea markets and junk shops. So I don‘t have URLs. Sorry…
You should've counter sunk the holes in the wood for pins to have a space to flow in. Yours seem a bit too thin but I guess you won't put too much pressure on them so they'll probably stay
Hey, I think it is fine. The more you countersink the more you have to peen the pins which puts more stress on the wood. The scales are quite thin and I didn‘t want to break them.
@@imadethischannel yes but you're probably file it a lot to not jab your hands with it and it would've been better if they were somewhat flush with food so something would hold it but again the pins are barely necessary. Peice of tape would've been enough to hold it
Well, guess I have a new channel to watch
Good skandi. And why not glue for the handle? Congrats
Thanks. I didn’t think it needed glue.
