IIHS challenges automakers with tougher TOP SAFETY PICK award criteria
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is making it harder to earn its TOP SAFETY PICK and TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards in 2024, challenging manufacturers to offer better protection for back seat passengers and improve their pedestrian crash avoidance systems.
Despite the more stringent requirements, 71 models qualify for 2024 awards. Of those, 22 earn TOP SAFETY PICK+, and 49 earn TOP SAFETY PICK.

Keep making the tests stricter! I suspect a lot of todays accidents are because of driver distractions and mistakes
toyota should get more points for yelling at when if your eyes are not towards the road.
@AgentSmith: The problem is that many people become increansingly more stupid, and for that there is no cure. Way too many Karens/Kevins behind the wheel. Only proper jail time makes the roads safer.
ya'll really need to add harsher criterias for headlights, everything is too blinding these days, especially trucks and suvs
Pretty sure those are using aftermarket headlights
@@LivingTheDream77 no, they aren't
Cadillac escalade is the worst. They glare the 2021+ ones
yes, thats how i actually crashed my 05 taurus. The highlander in front of me blinded me so I t-boned a minivan at like 35mph. A kid got hurt but i was okay. I miss that car it was so good I got another one.
@@2010hyundaielantra
I like those. They were the last with the front bench seats and column shifter. Sorry it was wrecked.
Am surprised how well Kia/Hyundai scores these days. Insane how 20 odd years ago they were considered a joke.
They are scoring great because they can’t get into a crash while they are in the shop getting their engine or trans replaced weekly.
These aren’t hard things to do, just need proper attention and actually spending budget on them. Not a wall of patents in their way, unlike combustion engines.
Still are a joke. QC and longevity don’t seem to translate well in Korean
@@MookieMan1the joke is completely dying when current vehicles Toyotas are blowing more engines. 😢
@@japanwatchconnectionmost stolen? You need to do your research.. their older models with key to start are the EASIEST to steal.. still not the most stolen. Kia telluride holds its value better than a Toyota Highlander and Honda pilot.. things change, it’s 2024, not 2010
Kia’s and Hyundais are on the most stolen list because they didn’t add immobilization to lower trims from 2011-2019.. the rest have immobilization and STILL get stolen more. 🤔
rear seat airbags would be interesting to see.
When is the criteria going to be changed so that any vehicle with a subrating for injury criteria won't be a TSP? No vehicle that has injury criteria that still scores an overall good should be awarded TSP in my opinion. Especially when there are cars from 03-05 that could pass the OG offset and side impact with good in all subcategories but there are still vehicles that have issues doing so today.
You'll really need to improve coverage of your midsized and large cars eg Audi A4, A6 still haven't had the updated side test in the last 2 years. Is there any visibility on when some of these common models will finally get tested on the updated norms?
Please also include criteria for tailllights: separate running, brake and amber turn signals. Too many USDM vehicles have unacceptable taillights without proper separate running, brake and amber turn signals, which can cause ambiguity and are therefore less effective and safe.
Test for cornering lights. I’ve almost ran into a ditch at night when turning into a driveway.
Keeping people alive and safe 🙌🏼
The updated side crash test id less used then the original or I haven’t seen a lot of them.
Thank you!
I’m stunned that the 2024 Toyota Camry only got a regular Top Safety Pick award because of that shattering window and injures that lead to a Marginal in the updated moderate overlap test and also since it had been a TSP+ for 8 years, I wonder what reaction ToyotaCamryFan2016 will get…
And also, even the best selling Toyota, the RAV4, didn’t receive any award, I wonder if people will buy a CR-V instead after finding out that their favorite SUV had no award…
People who buy cars don't care about prizes, they actually care about whether they meet their needs or not.
2:20 So that's why they call it a headliner! Owch!
My thoughts on the “brake assist” feature is that it will increase the occurrence of rear end crashes.
The headlights are too bright and are constantly in my eyes. Even with it being on low beams.
Third row safety testing please.
Congrats on basically mazdas whole line-up earning top safety pick+
Would love IIHS to offer a list of of vehicles that scores Good in all tests, surpassing the Acceptable included in Top Safety Picks.
Remember when Volvo was the epitome of safety? Not a single mention in this video 😢
they are Chinese now.
Everyone knows Volvos are tanks there’s no arguing that so don’t feel sad when they don’t mention them cause they have mentioned them dozens of times in the past. And I feel like Kia bought this one cause the other day I one of those Kia cars they had in this video and it was a literal ball of metal. Like we were in traffic for so long and we saw the accident that it was in, no one survived in the Kia.
@@djplonghead5403ok? And what does Chinese have to do with anything? Almost everything is built in china. You don’t complain when you have your Chinese made iPhone…or laptop…yet when it’s a car oh now it’s a problem. Please stop the hypocrisy and blatant racism. A lot of the parts in YOUR CAR were made in china…so please sit down
Volvo's marketing team made us think they were the epitome of safety.
Volvo still is a great vehicle, and are plenty safe. The difference is Volvo is not a mainstream brand like Kia or Toyota. So why mention the small brand that only sells a 10th of what Toyota/Kia does.
You guys need to actually start rolling over vehicles several times down a hill (outside) instead of testing the strength of the roof, and then you need to record the kind of movement that’s being forced on the dummy as well as how good their seatbelts and airbags are able to work. Unlike frontal crashes where the entire event happens less then a second, rollovers last for over a couple seconds which leads to risk of your seatbelt failing if it wasn’t designed well and wasn’t designed with the thought of being able to restrain upside passengers that are also being tossed around.
In February 2023 my 2004 Ford F-150 extended cab rolled over several times down the ditch before string a giant tree. It crushed in the drivers side door and knocked the wind out me. I also lost some of my hair when I hit my head and my hair got caught between the window and door frame. It took me about 10 to 15 seconds for me to start breathing again and I dealt with right wrist pain from my steering column snapping, whiplash, and chest pain from my seat belt which also left a rug burn on my chest. The drivers side door was jammed shut and the foot well was smashed about 6 inches inward where the left foot usually rest. In order to walk away I had to scoot to the passenger side to get out.
My front airbag didn’t go off because nothing hit the front end and my truck didn’t come with side curtain airbags yet. However I thankfully walked away without any broken bones or a concussion. But I remember the rollover lasting for about 5 seconds and I remember the feeling as if my neck was about to break from the g force. The g force and the pressure on my chest from my seatbelt tensioner locking up also prevented me from being able to breathe while I was rolling over and by the time I hit the tree and actually knocked the wind out of me. I was already desperate for a gasp of air that I remember thinking that I would pass out from lack of oxygen 🤷♂️
I want to know how my dinky little Smart Fortwo stacks up lol
Yeeeaa Toyota!!!❤
loser~!
It's sad that the brands that get shouted out are the ones most able to pump out more models under more brand names instead of the ones with the highest scores or highest precentage of high picks. The model Y consistently gets TSP+ and top ratings from global crash tests yet was not mentioned once
I feel the same way. Volvo was not mentioned either.
Lots of new vehicles are still missing the updated side crash test. If it’s because crashing real vehicles is unaffordable, then please do FEA testing so people have at last an idea of how the vehicle will protect them in a crash.
Please consider third row safety, if it is there for families, it needs to be safe. Why are rear crashes not tested? We see reckless drivers and self driving car mistakes all the time these days.
Why is a 'good' rating required in all categories except pedestrian protection? Why do manufacturers get to claim the prestige that goes with a TSP award despite their focus on pedestrian safety only being 'acceptable'? Come on, this really is low-hanging fruit. The industry has regressed massively on pedestrian safety in recent years, and IIHS should put pressure on manufacturers to up their game on all fronts.
Designs that place headlights or tailllight assemply in the lower corner of bumbers should be banned.
Many Hyundai and Kia designs results in high repair costs even from a light bumper scrape.
It's still unacceptable to me how it's 2024 and vehicles still don't have front seatback airbags to reduce rear passenger whiplash.
Glad to hear that the world's 2023 best selling car, Tesla Model Y is a TOP SAFETY PICK+
Glad this American company is prioritizing high safety
no american brand? wow
I find it interesting that all the US-Brands have only two Safety Pick + Awards. Only the Explorer and the Model Y got one, while nearly all Asian brands achieved a lot of awards.
Maybe Asian brands just have more models? Hyundai Group has like 30 models, Tesla has 5. Not sure about Ford.
@@mndrix But Ford, GM and Stellantis have a lot of different brands and models in literally every segment. For every Asian model with TSP+ you could find at least one US or European counterpart.
And zero mention of Tesla. Do the OEM'S sponsor IIHS?
When tesla crashes its totaled. No fixing
