- To answer a lot of questions I made my complete French cleat guide showing how to make your cleats, different mounting options, the science behind the cleats and different tips and tricks along with safety notes when cutting your cleats.
*** correction to the video I have a mistake in what I said was my measurement for cutting down a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood. You achieve 19 cleats and you’ll have a round a one and a half inch scrap piece left over this piece is great to be used for your first rung or your top rung since usually you’re not gonna have a functional cleat there.

Hey, algorithm…. Pump this guy up!
💪🏻💪🏻 Ty!
@@BitnerBuilt in all seriousness, love your videos!
Yes

@@BitnerBuiltquick question: When you were talking about the spacer blocks and them possibly having imperfect measurements, if one block is slightly shorter/longer then flipping the block wouldn't change the skew. Wouldn't you actually have to switch the blocks from left to right side in order to alternate and thus not exasperate the imperfection/skew?
This is exactly the vibe I want for woodworking when I'm learning. There's plenty of tiktok style content out there for entertainment but this is really a gem of a channel within CZcams.
Thanks so much! My videos run a little long, but hopefully I’m giving good content that way!
right? How the heck am I supossed to really learn some hard skills through 50secs videos. I love long ass detailed explanation videos. Also subscribed!
Thanks so very much. no fuss, just the facts, and no attitude. You provide an adult learning opportunity to allow any moron to feel they can do this, and I am a dyslexic moron. Easy, fun, and useful, thanks again. I will return the favor as I build my shop using your ideas and guide, to then share my triumphs and failures, as otherwise I would still be honing a square rock. Cheers Steven
Wow Steven thank you so much! You are actually the first and only person ever to do a super chat. I appreciate all the kind words! Do me a favor and email me your address, I am having some promo stuff made would love to send you something! Justin@bitnerbuilt.com
Just want to say a big Thank You for the Simple 5” 2” settings for ripping the French Cleats it works and so simple to use.
No problem glad to hear it!
I’ve been watching French cleat videos for nearly five years. This, far and away, is the best of them all!
Woooo! Thank you I tried!
Is this for 3/4" ply? @@BitnerBuilt
What a great video! Honestly, at 37 minutes, I didn't think I was going to watch the whole thing......I couldn't turn it off and learned a lot. Thanks so much.
Thanks! Yea my stuff runs long but I try my best to get as much good info in there!
I've been wanting to do a French cleat system for a few of years now. Long story short, I bought a sheet of 3/4" plywood and with a circular saw and a Bora track guide, made some cleats and mounted them on my garage wall. Initially, I was very pleased. But I quickly discovered how bad a job I did with my circular saw. So I decided it's time I invest in a table saw and redo my project.
In the mean time, I came across your video and it was VERY helpful. I have an old friend that lives hundreds of miles away that is also interested in French cleats but he just can't find the time to do it yet. I retired over a year ago and he's about to retire. So he's kind of depending on me to help guide him and avoid some mistakes I've already made. I've sent him many links of worthy French cleat videos but I told him that he MUST watch this one before proceeding.
BTW, I've not seen anyone use the framed foam to hold your hand tools as shown at 31:34. Yeah, I'll be giving that some strong consideration that when the time comes. I've liked and subscribed and expect to spend some hours watching your other videos. Thanks.
That’s great glad I was able to help good luck with you were in your friends installations!
This was the french cleat video I wished I could have studied when I made my wall. I had to watch multiple videos and read multiple articles to get alot of the same information. For the folks coming after me, this video will save them alot of time. You have a knack for teaching.
Thanks so much appreciate it!
For your spacer blocks idea, If you keep your blocks orientation the same and switch them back and forth, move the left side to the right side and vice versa each level it will also cancel out any imperfection.
Indeed it will!
I have watched dozens of french cleat videos and this was near the top of the most helpful and creative videos out there! Thank you so much for walking through the basics to creative ideas on how you've used them! I learned many new things to take my garage organization to the next level!
Thanks Andy!
Which one was the top?
When I first started this video, I thought, there’s no way I could watch a video this long about French cleats ,boy was I wrong.
Great video and yes I did subscribe.

Im pissed I never found your videos earlier. Love your shop, and love your content. You’re insanely good at explaining concepts.
Oh wow thanks very much! I’m only 5 months in so still really new!
This is a great french cleat video. Your videos are like someone thats Been doing it for 10 years not several months.
Wow, thank you!
You are a natural teacher. Interesting ideas and great work. I am new to French cleats and excited to try them. You are one of my new go-to mentors!

Wow, thank you very much for the kind words!
Hey Justin.
Today was day 1 of 3 replacing our old gas hvac with new tech. It was relocated from the garage to the attic, and man, I'm one happy garage shop owner!
Tons of new space!
Searching for french cleat videos (because I haven't already watched a hundred waiting for this day 😊), I came across yours.
Your content is super helpful and very importantly, easy to watch and absorb information.
New sub here! I'm headed off to watch some of your other 50 videos.
Many thanks and rock on!
Awesome! I’m jealous of your new HVAC! I have mine running in the shop full steam right now and it’s still 86 and I’m sweating like crazy I think next summer I’m gonna be hitting up some of those do it yourself mini split companies to see if I can do a video installing one wink wink 😂 thanks and hope you enjoy the other videos!
Excellent video. Thank you. I’m a disabled veteran and your method of instruction is very easy to follow.
Thanks Kevin! Glad I’m easy to follow for you!
Thank you for your Service, Kevin....
Love how you explain everything in simple terms

Finally found this channel again Best video on french cleats. Thanks!!
Thanks!
Your channel came out at the perfect time for me! I recently moved and have been pondering and brainstorming all of the million possibilities for setting up my new shop. I really like the way you do things, and how you communicate and present your information. Thanks Justin!
Awesome thanks Kenny!
Fabulous, loved every second. Awesome ideas ref gym. A big thank you.
Awesome! Thank you!
I watched ten videos about french cleats and yours was most insightful because you spoke about the physics behind them and you showed visual examples. Thats what I call soup to nuts
Thanks!
This....video.....was....Amazing!!
You're so well organized, my OCD loves it! Very detailed and to the point video!
Thanks! I have a volume 2 in the works coming soon!
Hey im new and we are only 2 months old 🤣. I still can't believe that you're only two months into this journey and already have 7500 plus subscribers. This has to be some kind of a record, not only in you're favour but more so in CZcams's. The reason I say this is the last time a CZcams channel gained so many followers in such a short time frame was probably in the very early day of CZcams going online and people finding out what it was all about. At least you're now monitorised so in a financial way it's hopefully onwards and upwards from here on in. Congrats buddy it just goes to prove that you're definitely doing something right. As always buddy 💯% 👍 🇬🇧.
😅 thanks Simon! Yea I’m just as surprised as you!
@Bitner Built Woodworking nomatter as I said your definitely doing something right 👍
All this video needs is bookmarks on the video to find topics easily. Fantastic video and extremely helpful. Thank you.
Thanks Sam, will see about adding those 👍
This was amazing. Made me completely change my office plans. It’s all French cleats now!
Thanks! Yea it’s great stuff have fun!
There's always time for good safety practices. Great video, thanks!
Thanks!
Man oh man, this guy is good! My sister sent me this vid and gotta thank her so much for this.
Oh wow thanks so much! I am actually working on a volume 2 for this video!
Your videos are very clear and concise. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks Bret! Appreciate it
Master class in French cleats. Thanks! I’ve kept this as a reference for several years to use as a refresher.
Glad it was helpful!
Years, eh?
Thank you, man! This is the most helpful video about french cleats I have ever watched.
Happy to hear that! Think I will be coming out with a part 2!
Never tried the cleats. Thanks for a well explained plan.
No problem 👍
I love the way you explain everything in a simple way so thank you
You are so welcome!
Great website... Excellent presentation with a smattering of humor... You gotta love it!
Glad you enjoy it!
I’m so thankful to have found your channel! You are a thorough, gifted teacher. Thank you for such thorough explanations.
Wow thanks very much! So kind of you!
Fantastic work, thanks for sharing this awesome lesson on cleats!
My pleasure!
I learned so much from this video!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Perfect timing (for me). Lots of good ideas to absorb. Thank you for such clear presentation.
Awesome have fun on your French cleat journey!
I like to add a space on the back of my cabinets and recess the cleat so it becomes a flush mounted cabinet. Works nicely.
Great tip!
Really appreciate this class on basics of French cleats. You have a really good way about you of teaching and sharing without coming across sort of arrogant or condescending (not that that many channels do but there are some😐). Anyway, look forward to looking at your other videos as well and subscribed for sure!
Wow thanks very much! Appreciate it!
Wow, wow, wow! Just loved this video! I so wish you were my neighbor
Hahaha your welcome to stop by the shop anytime 😃 glad you liked it
A terrific video! Much appreciated. I am a longtime fan of the French cleat.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you, you're the first video(s) I watched thoroughly thru the French cleat process. Well done and already implemented on one of my woodshop walls.
Glad it was helpful!
Also, great video!! Very clear and informative even for those of us new to woodworking.
👍
You hit every concern and question i had about french cleats and nailed it. Please keep doing shop layout, organisation, small shop tours and any other shop related videos.
Glad it was helpful!
I just watched and subscribed to your channel today and it was great. I have been planning to revamp my work shed for sometime and now I have discovered the perfect way to do it by using the French Cleats to sort out my tools . Thanks for the all the tips and measurements, it really helps. Plus at my age its nice to use Feet and Inches as that what I was brought up on (now I am showing my age !!).looking forward to more videos. Thanks
Thanks very much. Good luck with the shed!
If you are reading this make a comment to promote this guy
Haha thanks!
Great video. Lots of info and presented in a way that is easy to follow and understand. Would not have guessed you are only a few months into this. Looking forward to watching more of your content.
Thanks! Appreciate it!
I love your teaching style, and your French cleats. You’re my favorite!
Wow, thank you! 😊
Yuengling on tap that’s a life goal
🍻
Great video. About to start a French cleat system in my shop. This video gave me the basics I needed to get started. Love the hand saw idea. Definitely gonna do that. You need a discord server 😉
This was the video I have been looking for! Thanks for the detailed run through. You took the time to explain your measurements instead of just saying "I made it this big" which was super helpful after seeing so many different versions. After watching a lot of videos I figured a lot of this out but it was nice to have confirmation. Wish I found this video first. Really loved your teaching demos and examples, really helped see the right and wrong way. I will recommend this video.
Thanks so much! Glad it was helpful!
Wow, so much great French cleat info! Nice job. Really enjoyed the video!
Awesome thanks so much. Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent video!! Great audio quality and very well explained!! Congrats!!
Thanks so much!
Watched loads of French Cleat videos this is by far the best!!! Keep up the good work. Brilliant
Thank you! I will be putting out a vol 2 sometime soon
Please accept a compliment. As a first time viewer of your channel it is a pleasure to hear your verbal delivery. What a command of the English language!!!! Not using the "you know" every sixth word noise. How 'bout using a small square of velcro to stick the cleat above the hanger????
Thank you very much! Sometimes I’m too wordy 😂 I’m going to be making a vol 2 of this video in the next month and I will touch on Velcro in that one
This might be the best video on this I have seen
Thanks!
Great video. Watching made me feel like I had a good dad teaching me.
Thanks!
Excellent video! Thank for thoroughly going through it :)
My pleasure!
So glad I found this channel. My sons and I and getting for workshop built out and decided to look into French cleats to hang things.
Very good video. Probably the best I have seen so far on this subject. Looking forward to watching even more videos from you now.
Thanks so much! Have fun with your build!
Just FYI,@@BitnerBuilt my 13 year old son has gone French Cleat crazy in my shop. I am worried by this time tomorrow every wall in my shop will have them, that or he will run out of plywood before.
Excellent content, excellent presentation, I am in the middle of trying to organize a shop, this is a perfect timed find and exactly what I hope to find when searching “How to” ideas. Subscribed 👍
Thank you very much!
I'm so glad to have come across your channel and this video. I'm in the process of better organising my small single garage workshop and had heard of French cleats. Your video (and your other videos too) have helped loads.
Subscribed!
Awesome thank you so much! Glad I can help!
Absolutely incredible video, THANK YOU for sharing this info!
No problem glad I could help!
Fantastic video, have seen many on french cleats but none as good as this
Wow, thank you!
Thank you so much. I just started woodworking after retiring from the military and of course not enough space in the garage for the tools so French Cleats are the solution. I am trying to combine the French Cleats with the already 10y old ELFA garage Storage kit we got at the Container Store which helped keeping the garage organized at that time back in 2010 as I had very few basic hand tools (drills, bits, hammers, screws, nails, boxes, containers, etc.); however, once starting woodworking and getting my dad’s tools after he passed away, the current storage is completely overwhelmed. Again, greatly appreciated showing how much you can do w/ French Cleats. I can’t wait to start building them!🙂
Awesome have fun with it!
@@BitnerBuilt Thanks, I will.
As shown by all of the other comments, this is the end-all video on french cleats. FANTASTIC!! I use french cleats but, I rent and my land owner is very accommodating with my shop/garage. I'm sure she would not let my use glue on the OSB walls. So, I just use screws. 1-1/2" into studs and 1" between.
Thanks Benjamin! Really appreciate that!
Best explanation I've seen yet. Thank you!
Awesome glad to hear it!
Love your good and better progress...grest information...awesome ❤
Thanks so much!
Amazing!! I just moved and needed to organize my worksop in a smaller space and this is perfect!! Thank you
Thanks! Have fun cleating!
Thank you for all the ideas in here (5" rips, 2" beveled cuts, determining the minimum spacing to use between cleats), and your reply to my comment. You saved me a lot of time and effort.
Oh wow thanks so much!
Thanks for a super helpful video - I've a new shop in progress, and tool storage is the next big step. Really appreciate the detailed guidance here.
Thanks! Have fun with organizing the new shop (my fav thing to do lol!)
Thank you so much for this video, I have a workshop and have not really been happy with how my tools are kept/stored but now :-) You explain things well without being condescending so thank you 👍
Thanks Mel!
Really great video! I kind of wonder about one thing, though. I have seen in at least a couple other videos on french cleats where they trimmed off about 1/8" from the angled tip of the cleat. As those other woodworkers explained, that keeps the cleats from getting messed up/thrown off balance/something when sawdust or other debris gets into that space where the cleats join. I don't know if I explained that well, so forgive my uncertainty as to the reasoning. Anyway, any thoughts on that? Just curious. Thank you for sharing your tips & tricks. I haven't gotten to my french cleats - yet - but I will one of these days. Just one of many projects I have planned. Hope you have a wonderful day!
You are right many people do trim theirs, I had it on my ideas to share but never got to it. I personally don’t do it and haven’t encountered any issues but I totally understand why and agree it is nice not to have the sharp edge and allows for sawdust in the cleat to not throw you off. Thanks Andrea!
Great video, thank you for showing.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks so much. I am about to set a French Cleat wall and learned so much. You have a new subscriber 😄
✌️ have fun with it!
Thanks that's was very useful. Greetings from Hungary.
Thanks! Happy to have my first Hungary viewer! 🇭🇺
This is the french cleat video CZcams has needed. Very high density of useful information and fantastic visual presentation with the close up side shots. About to build a french cleat garage wall for the house my partner and I just bought, and will be referencing this quite a bit. Subbed, looking forward to crawling through the rest of the channel, wishing you luck on your CZcamsr journey!
Thanks very much! Good luck on your build!
Hey algorithm, pump this guy up!!
💪🏻✌️
I like how you went through so many details about his subject, ive seen a dozen about this, but yours is the first to kinda point out things that you need to keep in mind, and you inform very well how it works and why, so we can better understand how to avoid problems down the road when building this ourselves. Thank you and GJ. Subscriped and liked :) Have a nice day, looking forward to more of your videos.
Thanks and appreciate that! Try to make my videos as informative as possible!
Good information and you gave me an idea for my shop with your little toolboxes on the wall Thanks
Nice! Thanks
Absolutely loved this one. Thanks for making it!
Thanks Amerzel!
Algorithm bump great video
Thanks!
best french cleat video i have seen.
Thanks!
One of the best intros to french cleats I've seen on YT, well done GG!
Wow thank you!
Great Video!! I don't have a lot of tools, I do have a circular saw that tilts to the sides. Would like to see a demonstration using hand held power tools only, and how to clamp it for safety, I would much appreciated thank you sir.
Thanks! I will be putting out a volume 2 on French cleats hopefully December, I will include a demonstration
Wow, having produced 200+ videos myself, I am most impressed!
oh thank you very much! means a lot!
Thanks for the detail. Love your channel. I'm just starting with my garage walls and enjoyed your tips. Keep up the good work.
Thanks very much. Good luck with your garage!
Excellent work! Thanks for making this video.
Glad you liked it! There will be a volume 2 coming out soon!
Very cool. Keep ‘em coming.
Thanks! Will do!
Thanks Justin. This was a very good tutorial, I wish I had seen it before I put up my french cleat wall!
Thanks David!
Thank's so much for this! This video is so easy to follow much appreciated.
You’re welcome! I’m gonna be putting out a volume 2 sometime this month, so stay tuned!
Looking forward to it
Very nice informative video. I’ve watched several French cleat videos that show you how to make them but not really explain the physics of them. You did a wonderful job of that. I have a shed/workshop that is just studs. I’m stuck on insulating or not and so far have not found a perfect inexpensive wall covering. I think I’ll create an experimental wall for my adventure into cleats. Thanks for the information and inspiration. Liked, subscribed and commented.
Thanks so much good luck with it!
Great video, thank you!
Glad you liked it!
Just a wonderfully made video. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Brilliant. Thank you
Glad you liked it!
Great explanation, thanks.
that example with magnets looks interesting
Glad you liked it!
Wow great video, that's help me alot for my futur woodworking shop. Let's me tell you that in "french": continuez à produire d'autres excellents vidéos, je vais vous suivre assidument! Nice work, you have one more follower ;)
Great thank you lluc! Good luck with future French cleats! 🇫🇷
Another great video, a lot of great ideas! You're doing a fantastic job right out of the gate!
Thanks Thomas!
This was so good I subscribed twice!
Haha I’ll take it! Thanks!
