Roswaal beating Subaru was his attempt to get him to “undo” or “reset” to a certain point. He has an idea of the ability but doesn’t know that Return by Death literally requires Barusu to actually die.

Spoilers for Greed IF Light Novel…
Once Subaru perfected the loop for saving the mansion (after 2000+ death) Elsa makes a remark on the look in Subaru’s eyes.
Elsa: “It seems that the rotten look in your eyes have gotten a lot worse since the last time I saw you at the Royal Capital”
This means that Elsa has noticed that Subaru had that twisted look in his eyes that disturbed her even back then.
Subaru then uses Meili as a hostage while pointing a small knife to her neck. And manages to lead Elsa into the Great Hare. Subaru then pushes Elsa right onto the Great Rabbit. Elsa once again states her true thoughts on Subaru;
Elsa:” --Despicable!”
Subaru: “I know…”
And Elsa starts to get devoured.
What I’m trying to say that Subaru had the Greed IF mindset in this episode. And this way of thinking has shown itself through Subaru’s eyes. Elsa has noticed that and that’s why he slashed his eye.

Usually i always consider the WN over the LN (except maybe Arc 5) but the LN for Greed IF is so much better, Ringo translate faster dammit

I always thought it was the animators way of easter egging a "don't look at my OPPAI focus on the storyline"
I want to really stress how insane Roswaal would have to be. He understands that somehow Subaru is restarting but doesn't understand the mechanics of it all. Despite that, he's so bought in on his cause that he's willing to die, fully believing that some alternate timeline version of himself will get what he wants. We the audience understand this is possible, but from Roswaal's POV he doesn't. This version of Roswaal is just dead, but he still thinks he's going to win in some parallel time.
This is the first time I've seen a CZcamsr actually know that Emilia was broken not possessed

Its hard to catch, but Roswaal thanks to his book knows Subaru is looping, but he has no knowledge its by Death, this is where Satella's protection really comes in handy, if anyone knew the method, like Roswaal, he would immediately kill Subaru when things didnt go their way, but now he just believes Subaru loops at will whenever.
Also, one funny thing is how Roswaal used the english "Smart" and asked Subaru if he used this new foreign word correctly, before kicking the shit out of him to force him to loop. He picked up on Subarus strange lingo in OVA too with "tsundere", he likes Subaru's imported language and tries to pick it up.
Bruh, now that makes it seem like he said "did i use it right" for the word "Smart" as well looping, before he started kicking Subaru's ass.
So that is a warning to some characters that use english word. japan use a lot of english as a native slang but in this story they aren't use any. I have watch lots of isekai and they always use some english word out of nowhere and I understand it was used in original work but will never make any sense.
@@jackerrocker2235 Its a bit tricky, indeed the regular japanese has some english words and Rezero characters use it (I cant think of many examples, other than Rem saying "zero kara.." in ep18 or Roswaals "kakugo no start line..." in s2e13, but when Roswaal said "smaaarto" "did I use it right?" Hes explicitly trying to use word Subaru imported.
@@Zonca2 Both of them know Subaru that’s why. So if you see anyone else using it then it abnormal. I heard English in Tsukimichi and almost freak out only to realize there is no plot about it.
Ream and Ream, got it :) Roswaal is such a psycho that he not only does not care that he will die and cease to exist, but is probably punishing himself for not being able to accomplish his goal on this timeline by "dieing by bunny".
To explain what happened in this episode:
Roswaal caused the snow (in order for the entire town to be suspicious and berate Emilia as the cause of the snow) and also knows that someone got rid of Subaru's letter (that explained that he was leaving for a while to the mansion but that he was going to come back). And without Puck and Subaru to support her during the trial, Emilia kept attempting the trial and failing miserably until the mental pressure of being blamed for the snow and also from being accused/hated for supposedly being an evil witch, the feeling of being abandoned and the trauma of the trial got her mentally broken to the point where she went crazy and started to think that she wasn't able do anything without Subaru's support. That's why she was acting so weird.
And when it comes to Roswaal, there's something important to clarify:
It's widely implied that there's only two individuals that know about the existence of return by death in the world.
One of them is supposedly Puck and the other is confirmed to be Roswaal. But each of them have different info:
Puck knows that there's someone in the world that has the power to reset the world upon death but doesn't know the identity of such person. That's why she turns into that giant cat and freezes the entire world every time Emilia dies. Like in S1 episode 15. Because she knows that by killing everyone, that action would also be killing the person that has the power to return by death to reset the world and that way, Emilia will be alive again.
And when it comes to Roswaal, (unlike Puck) he knows that it's Subaru the one that has the ability to return by death but what he doesn't know is how Subaru resets the world (but Puck does). Roswaal doesn't know that Subaru needs to die to reset the world. That's why in this episode he starts punching him and kicking him in an attempt to make him use his ability.
Also, in case you were wondering, the only reason Subaru was able to survive the attack of the rabbits is because he ordered the pink haired elf clones to defend him (since he gained the authority to give them orders in the previous episodes). But even like that he still got badly injured. That's the only reason he was able to reach Emilia despite all the rabbits being there.
Is the puck knowing RBD is stated in the novel but removed from the anime or is it a fact later stated in the novel? If it the latter it's a spoiler

It's known that there's at least two people aware of return by death. One of them is Roswaal and the other is widely believed by the fandom that the other one is Puck due to the way she destroys the world every time Emilia dies.

Roswaal is trying to force Subaru to reset without killing him because he knows that he loops but he doesn’t know how Subarus ability works so he’s thinking Subaru can decide on his own valuation when to trigger reset
Yeah, these are the only reactors I know to have picked up on emilia being crazy and not just overtaken by tella

Can we have a moment of respect for Beatrice, like, with the last ounce of her strength before die she send Subaru away using teleportation magic (which is a high level Yin magic) just so he could survive. 😢
People really like to flame you for the silliest reasons. About Ram, if you watch closely the scene where Roswaal seemingly kills her, you might notice that in fact it’s not her own blood but actually the female titan’s! Love ya guys ;)

The reason Elsa slashed Subaru’s eye is because Elsa hated the look in Subaru’s eyes. When she looks at Subaru’s eyes she seesthat Subaru was given up on life and already started planning ahead of his death.(He was thinking that was the end for this loop and already started planning for the next loop) It’s was an abhorent way of thinking that even Elsa was disgusted. From Elsa’s perspective Subaru was looking for a future that was not even there.
Emilia didn’t get possessed by Satella. She was mindbroken from being alone and going through the trials multiple times. Without Puck or Subaru, She was swallowed in her trauma without any pillar in her life.
Roswaal doesn’t actually know about Return by Death. The tome of wisdom only told Roswaal that Subaru has the ability to “Redo” things. So Roswaal thinks Subaru can loop back with his will. He doesn’t know about the conditions(Dying). That’s why Roswaal beat the hell out of Subaru, he tried Subaru to loop back with force.
Also the way Subaru escaped from the great rabbit was cut in the anime, Subaru used the Ryuzu clones as suicide bombers while he tried to get back to Emilia. While he was trying to get back to Emilia he saw the church that the villagers were staying on fire. Then Subaru had come to conclusion that the Villagers have chosed to burn alive than get eaten alive by the rabbits. It was a mass suicide.
Also the ending was Subaru’s first ever kiss in his life…
1 of the best issekai anime.. i don't know about the new issekais, but SAO, LOG HORIZON, AND RE: ZERO are my favorite.. the story teller *noice*

If you watch the "Break Time" mini-episodes you get Maylie's and Elsa's backstory together. (plus other stuff) There's one "Break Time" for each "real" episode and they're not going to spoil anything important.
