    Orla, there is something so peaceful and calming about your videos. Watching how you develop your ideas and concepts is inspirational. Watching your process, techniques and colour choices is mesmerizing. After a long, stressful day I find myself thinking 'I need to watch Orla'. Your whole approach to abstract art has greatly increased my respect for abstract artists and I see such value, learning and growth in the way you create each piece. This series (& all your previous artworks) is marvelous, I'm thoroughly enjoying watching the words, colours, feelings ... everything! ... coming together so beautifully. Thank you for creating such a lovely, inspirational space for us to relax in.

    Thank you so much for this Orla! I found it very helpful. It's true I also feel like if I finish a piece too fast it's somehow of less value than something that took weeks or months to make 😅.

      that's really great to hear :) and it's a funny ol thing eh 🙃 I had a brilliant reminder here in the comments from @angelawales7034 with the reminder that it takes a lifetime to create, not just the hours painting 🎨

    How I deal with the speedy painting thoughts. ‘I’m this fast because of all the years of practice, that’s what a customer pays for’. Emotionally I tell myself ‘wow I was really present with myself today’, followed by ‘thank you for being present with me’ to my inner critic.

    • @OrlaStevens
      @OrlaStevens  Před 4 měsíci +1

      yesss! all the practice and years to get the skills in the first place. Thank you, I needed that reminder! That's a beautiful way to check in with yourself too 💙

    This video is like a masterclass in the aches and pains of any creative process. Thank you so much for making it and sharing it. I am going to share it with my film students, because I think there's a lot of value in what you've shared. Also your art is beautiful! 🤩

      Thanks so much! aw that's so cool, love a multidisciplinary influence, I hope it helps them! I've just been learning more about film making & storytelling structures, to see if it'll help with my paintings - so much to learn from other disciplines :)

    “OH Nooo!!!” I groaned out loud as you painted over your cool circle bobble thingies on a painting. And you did it again! Painted right over some color play I liked a lot. 🙄🤦‍♀️ guess you do practice what you preach. 😂 It was the right call by the way. The result was exciting. I often wonder where the line is between stopping too soon or pushing a work too far. Good lesson for me to see. Was there too many little bits? Needed more larger units of color?

      @OrlaStevens  Před 4 měsíci +1

      hahahhaa I have this monologue in my head too 😂 often it's the only way to resolve something, by loosing a really lovely wee bit. It's such a balancing act for sure, and I don't think any artist gets it right all the time 🎨

    When asked how long a painting took him (he was actually being sued over it!), Whistler famously said something along the lines of “my entire life”. ❤

    Thanx for the video, it indeed gave me an “up”! What kind/brand of tape do you use on the paper?

    • @OrlaStevens
      @OrlaStevens  Před 4 měsíci

      Thank you, that's great to hear! 🎨 This one is Tesa Sensitive tape from the hardware store - it's my go-to for working with 200gsm papers and under (watercolour or cartridge) but with this 300gsm it's not sticking as well, so on the hunt for a new one :)

    • @OrlaStevens
      @OrlaStevens  Před 4 měsíci

      of course! I go into my materials in more depth in my sketchbook video, but here I'm using: acrylics, oil pastel, soft pastel, acrylic ink, pencil, watercolours (tubes and pans) ☀️
