Thank you for articulating so many of the thoughts that I have in my head. 57 years old and still feeling self conscious to express my artistic voice, for fear of it not being considered ‘High Art’. Beautiful work Orla. 👍🏻
I LOVE painting this way...for expression. Your work radiates joy and authenticity and I am so happy to watch you paint. I have taken butcher paper and acryllic paint and painted 9 24×24 inches intuitve paintings and have hung them on the tall wooden fence in my yard. THIS gives me joy. Thank you so so much!
Ive started my own A-Z on being a 40 year old Indian dad of a 4 year old in Scotland. Being socially isolated, art is my saviour. Thank you for helping my process, Orla.
Your words really resonated with me - for years I've done representational art because I was worried about what others would think of my finished paintings. Tonight I grabbed my gouache and did three small abstract paintings and not only was the process very meditative and freeing, but I've got three finished paintings that I absolutely love and cannot quit staring at. Thank you Orla.
I’ve loved working with it! So simple but effective ☀️I got the idea from a brilliant illustrator called Tom froese, who is also an amazing teacher. Can’t recommend his classes enough!
I can Say only one Word: Amazing!! 🌟🙌 Everything you told, each frame of this video, the artworks etc are so precious. I also wanna thanks you because through your clear and authentic explanation of what there Is behind artist's work, I can reflect, understand and embrace my true self as an artist 🙌🙏🍂💟
This is a fabulous video well done. Your little insights into creative practice and process are so beneficial to keep me on track and I guess others too.
Yes, I’ve learned pushing through resistance and grumpies can often lead to great surprises and in turn a shift in mood. I so love your color choices and your balance of planning and intuition. Exciting!
Me too! I used to think i needed to be in good mood (rare) to make art. Im getting better at coaxing myself into getting off my sad butt and creating. I always feel proud that i had a mindset win, regardless of whether the session felt great or not.
I love the painting you have labeled as 'under sea world'. But I see it as a desert landscape. I love the colors, the shapes and the marks. In particular on the left side of the painting where you scratched through the paint to reveal the color underneath, and those scratches mirror the forms around it creating depth and interest. The only suggestion I could make for that painting and others is add more darks. I always see darks as helping to lead your eye around the painting by using strong contrast, because I live strong contrast. And I think darks help ground the painting in a space. I am really enjoying this series.
Oooh so interesting! I've never visited a desert before, it'd be great to experience :) Absolutely; I've been thinking of pulling more contrast in myself - will be fun to take it forwards in the current works :) thank you for the feedback ☀️
I’m going to have to watch this several times to digest everything. I realize I’m probably chasing the wrong thing. I’ve been so focused for years on having my own style and 6 minutes in it hit me. I probably have one. I just need to create. It already there. What I want isn’t to chase my style. I want to have fun creating. I want to experiment and explore. I want self-acceptance. To create what I want to create. Art is so far my hobby and the only thing holding me back is me (and time, with a small child and a full time job there isn’t much time for art. But that season of my life will pass )
Absolutely; even through lots of changes and phases of style, there’s something in everything that has your hand in it, a way you use a mark or a colour or something that emerges over the years ✨
What a wonderful video - made some notes along the way and committed to trying it this weekend! I love your work - is really speaks to me in terms of colour and texture and I’m excited to be here ! I find your voice so beautiful too
Love, love , love watching your process!! I’ve been wanting to get back into abstract but struggle with knowing what to paint. I wanna try your A-Z method :)
Fabulous I just found you!!! What an inspiration of organization, inspiration and following through to a finished creative piece. So often we artist get lost in the process!!! Definitely will be watching you. Thank you!!
These are so inspiring! I think I say that every time lol. And every time I think they are my favourites, and then you do another set and it happens again 😂. You are doing some really special work here. As a word nerd, I love this idea of having a structure to inspire written/oral language, but then to have that inform something visual that I create...I'm much less confident there but definitely will try it and see where it leads. Thanks, Orla!
Haha that’s amazing ☀️🌻💙 I’m feeling really connected to this series too, I think it’s helped something click for me. Yessss It’s such a fun process! I’d love to branch out with my language. Hey, if it sparks new ideas for your writing, that’d be so cool!

Thanks so much 🌞 I'm sure I will be too - it's such a mind game isn't it! A life's work. Let's swap high art for my art 😉
