I was a jazz drummer for 15 years. Then, I wrote about jazz for DownBeat, Jazziz, JazzTimes, and currently, Stereophile. I take a musician's, journalist's, and documentarian’s approach to collecting jazz vinyl.
I tend to prefer OG or early pressings to new reissues, as they have more life force, greater naturalness, and drive. Though admittedly, new reissues have more bass, and smoother overall texture which mates well with today's hi-fi equipment. Thanks for watching!

Thanks so much Ken. I have been blessed to have played with a few of the drummers that you mentioned and your comments were spot on especially my former boss for nine years up until his death the great Elvin Jones !
What a fantastic video! So many titles! I learned so much so fast! Thank you Ken!
Fantastic video, thanks!🙏
Horacee Arnold is another unsung jazz drummer worth mentioning. His early 70’s albums (Tribe; Tales Of The Exonerated Flea) stand the test of time well.
No such word as Vinyls 😉 , good video Ken .
I know, but it got your attention. Thank you.
'Shelly Manne and his Men play Checkmate' is one of may favourite jazz LPs. Those Contemporary records sound fantastic. Thanks Ken.
outstanding statement Shirt : Cannon AE1 & 50mm f1.4 lens
Tony in Venice Florida
Great! Thanks. I learned a lot from this one.
Thanks for watching
I have the MOV Miles Davis album. I agree with you It is amazing.
Great video, Ken. A few others came to mind: Drums Around the Corner (Art Blakey) and similar to Interstellar Space, Duo Exchange (Rashied Ali & Frank Lowe). Keep up the good work!
Thanks, I should check out duo exchange
a couple of my favorite ``Klook `` recordings :
Telfunken Blues and Bohemia After Dark
a favorite Max Roach recording among many others: Max Roach 4 plays Charlie Parker
Has anyone heard Billy Cobham with Stanley Clarke (among others) on Live at the Greek? I have it on (bit bright) CD but it’s a great workout for bass & dynamics.
Fascinating discs there, Ken. I have two copies of that Art Blakey & Thelonious Monk album; both terrible pressings! Was Phil Seamen ever on your radar?
Thanks. I’ve only ever heard or seen one Phil Seaman‘s album. You suddenly realize where ginger Baker came from!
Vinyls?
Vinylzzzzz
Vinyls??? Only Millennials or idiots refer to records as "vinyls"
I’m not on millennial so I must be an idiot. Thanks.
