I like Rudy’s recordings the way they were originally pressed. It’s history! I just acquired a Steve Allen first pressing, Jazz for Tonight, on Coral 1955. Check it out. Fantastic!
Black Friday was a minor AM Hit in 1975. Loved Denny Dias's out there Electric Sitar solo on Do it Again
Although I was seriously contemplating on buying the Humminguru, I decided to buy an even cheaper ultrasonic cleaner by Vevor. I figured I would practise on that first before spending almost $1000 (in Canada with tax) on the Humminguru. I'm happy to say it works great! Once the Vevor craps out, I will definitely upgrade. Thanks for this review Ken!
I've never met a music-lover/audiophile that listened at a more intense or sophisticated level than Jeffrey Catalano
A knockout
I not sure I think it's a "Bill Evans album" thats a bit subjective if someone says they have heard that and don't give sources. He's only co-credited with two songs on the album. Miles had an idea and Bill Evans was part of that idea?
Herb explains the appeal of Sun Ra is perfect! It's just how I feel about his music... there's some novelty and some magic to it. I can't believe that you Ken aren't hip to his music. I figure that if you're heavy into jazz, you would have checked out RA...
Well... some of the Paul Motian stuff is borderline too abstract/free for my taste, but the stuff where he's playing more recognizable tunes, particularly the Monk in Motian album. I kind of feel that Motian made a change like a realist painter going to a totally abstract, non-figurative approach... and I think both eras are brilliant. I feel like on this album and others Motian and his group strikes a great balance between the melodic/lyrical and the abstract...
Well said
Nice one as always…all jazz vc channels are equal…yours is right at the top!
thank you
Enjoy experiencing the depth of Jeff's knowledge.
As a drummer I really appreciated this video showing Jeff’s favorite drumming recordings Good stuff!!!!
Bitches Brew: DeJohnette, Cobham, Lenny White
Why are you calling them vinyls like all the young dilettantes? You’re a highly knowledgeable expert and an adult, they’re records.
I gave up and gave in
Great video. How about some Rock records next?
maybe..
The lighting and video quality are great on this, what type of camera did you use? Keep em coming!
Thanks the Sony ZVE1 I think it is
Great interviewing skills! Really fun to listen to Jeff again. Jimmy Cobb’s drive is on full display on Wes Montgomery Full House.
Kind of Blue. You are absolutely right. That is a Bill Evans album. No doubt! Granted, it’s the entire sextet, but, it’s the genius of Evans that makes it.
Hearth beats, impressions and passion ! Great video !
so much knowledge ...great stuff ..thank you
Great interview and insights. This along with your conversations with Jimmy Vinyl are some of my favorites
I am a Jazz guitar player, when Jazz musicians/former Jazz musicians ...whatever, talks about Jazz, I always agree. When these "Jazz Experts" on CZcams talk about Jazz, I often disagree. Great as always Ken, love your channel.
Great choices there for drummers, and I would like to add Billy Cobham, Roy Haynes, Jack Dejohnette and Steve Gadd to the mix. Jack Dejohnette wasn’t as explosive as Cobham and Roy Haynes, but he is a magnificent musician that plays piano as well as he plays the drums as evident on the extremely hard to find album Return.
Thank you for this amazing moment of history at the space hi-fi world. Salute from Portugal
Love how this gentleman talks about Mitch Mitchell , Keith Moon and Ginger Baker . Keith North west London Wembley , Mitch West London Ealing ? Ginger South London Lewisham? East London had Kenny Jones . North London had Dave Clark . Love the enthusiasm for Bitches Brew and Lee Morgan
Do they change the artwork on those Tone Poets ? Sometimes I think they just repackage stuff every 20 years to sell it all to us again . I was buying Blue Note reissues in 1985 , the Herbie , Wayne and Dexter . Then in the 1990s bought them all again on cd . In the 1990s had a cd issue of Quadraphenia by the Who then it gets another release with bonus track of Pete Townsend demos for that album . That was worth it because the demos were top class and he even did a drum over dub himself for the release. Ok it’s not jazz . I like the idea of taking a journey to buy a record, every country I’ve been too I got something. Japan being the best place but walking round back streets of Athens Greece was a memory . Wished I had got Aphrodites Child the rock single with Demis Rousos . I did get Stanley Clarkes modern Man and
A video about contemporary drummers would be great too.
Wait, I’m confused…I’ve literally heard Fremer say that the Stones’ Let It Bleed Decca was better than the London label. If it’s what he describes here, it shouldn’t be any different.
DEREK BAILEY!!!
Thanks for listing Jeff's picks!
Great video! Really enjoyed that.
Excellent! Thank you both.
As a drummer and jazz fanatic this is treasure
I've had a lot of Tommy Hoerning's speakers too - To me, they are all totally unique.. Currently I have the Alkibiades(the ones with two back firing 12" woofers on each side) Believe this one was awarded The Golden Ear, by Absolute Sound, back in the day.. Jeff is such a great exponent for Hoerning Hybrid speakers, and that's just beautiful..
Great review. Love Countdown. Thanks!
I was 14 when The Dan made their debut. The electric sitar solo on Do it Again had me hypnotized. Been a fan ever since. I can't think of a song on their albums through Two Against Nature that I didn't like. Everything Must Go is horrible though.
Horrible? Why?
@@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455 Even though the music was expertly played and recorded I don't think that the songwriting was up to par. It's probably just my taste.
@@williamjackson6705 on the first album? Compared to their following albums, I agree.
@@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455 I am saying their final album, Everything Must Go was bad. I liked their first album & all their others very much. Sorry if I wasn't clear.
Remind me Ken to tell you some Walter Becker stories. Walter was a great guy and use to love to come here to hang out, listen and chill.
Yes, he owned Shindo. We talked about a Stereophile feature…
Brilliant, your enthusiasm and knowledge makes your videos enjoyable and compelling, thank you..
Aunt Beryl is that you?
Great video. BUUUUT!!! For the next video of anyone! SHOW MORE OF THE EQUIPMENT!!!😢😢 #&%$@&$%!!!
what do you want? I did close ups of all his gear
Can you answer why they never played Do it Again live ? One of if not their biggest hit in our country and they visited here a few times and never played it which was the biggest let down for me. I believe to this day that they could never match the lead guitarist break in the song. Cheers
He's a Sound Whisperer!
❤Love everything about that guy❤ His gear lives in my head as the superlative of life style❤
Great analysis, Ken. Cheers.
Only a Fool Would Say That… Fagan’s answer to John Lennon’s Imagine. Just loved it. Lennon’s Utopia vs. Fagan’s Reality.
You are getting too much incorrect here for me to itemize, but I hope others will.
If you’re an expert sent me straight
I agree with Ken … if he is soooo wrong why don’t you go ahead and “itemize” - or is it too hard for you to type out your thoughts As usual, Ken, thanks for your thoughts. Excellent review.
No biggie, but I think reelin’ in the years solo was Elliot Randall.
Great video and review Thank you so much
Does the humming guru not do the whole job , would I need to buy the project too
@@Ricky-cl5bu you need a vacuum machine like the project more than you need the humming guru. Ultrasonic cannot remove surface grit or thumbprints or dirt. It goes deeper into the grooves and removes level of grayness. You didn’t know existed. Ideal you have both but if only one I’d stick with some sort of a vacuum machine. That’s my two cents.
I thought the project was pretty useless and a real pain to use, so I traded up to the humminguru, use a surfactant, this combined with rega’s approach (if you want to clean your records, play them) don’t overuse the humminguru in one cleaning session (over heating) and you’ll be fine, it’s pretty simple and I’m very happy with it, also you never really see them on eBay so other people must keep them. Regards really dirty records a manual cleaning first.
@@kkjrees all used records require a vacuum cleaning before US. Project VPI whatever. Pain to use. Sorry. People have been cleaning records with vacuum methods since the 60s. US doesnt do it all
@@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455 just my personal opinion as is yours, maybe it’s different in America
Good to know
Hey Ken, great channel and lots of great information. I like how you speak your mind and are critical when necessary. One thing I have not noticed with your Blue Note LP reissue reviews is there is no talk of the pressing quality or lack of with these releases. I should say it's pretty inconsistent. I've noticed a considerable drop in quality control coming from RTI in recent years. I have all the music matters releases on 33 1/3 that I picked up several years ago and they are all flawless pressings. In contrast, I've had to send back many Tone Poets for replacement due to pressing errors, scratches, clicking, excessive surface noise. I think it's important for influencers reviewing these products to point this stuff out and hold the company accountable to do a better job because it is certainly possible to do so. They are much more likely to take your feedback than the average customer. Maybe you're just lucky and never received a bad pressing in this series, but that's hard to believe. We would like to hear about it and why this problem has popped up with many pressing plants over the past few years. Thanks and keep doing what you're doing!
...and agreed. Got to actually listen to real instruments, un-mic bands and human voices. Get a hearing test!!! About system matching...not ridiculous amounts of money tossed at it. I still can't forget the sound of Ray Lynch on my roommates Sony/book shelf Cerwin Vega rig.
