  • As humans, we all share some experiences, no matter what part of the world we live in, and no matter what our culture may be. We share them because we are human; some are obvious... We are all born, we all gather sustenance in some way, we all sleep, we all dream, we all love and hate, and we all die, these are things we understand. However, there are other experiences we share that are not so easily understood, such as dreams, sleep paralysis and The Old Hag, and the latter is what we will look at in this video.
The Old Hag occurs everywhere in every human culture. It is sometimes called an “experience”, sometimes a “phenomenon” But it is sometimes, in fact often, called an “attack”, and for good reason, because it is often utterly terrifying. So What is it? Let's take a look. Hit the lights, sit back, enjoy, and don’t let yourself doze off. Something may be waiting...
    00:00 Introduction
01:06 What is the “Old Hag”?
03:46 How Widespread is the Experience?
    04:37 What Causes it?
    06:07 The Subjective Experience
    07:45 Is the Experience “Real”?

One Halloween in 1966 . My Mum was called next door as one of the girls hurt them self with a cut , so my Mum went to help out . Then my brother got up to go to the the toilet and we seen a black cat sitting on the old toilet system as we thought it was next door neighbours cat as they had a black cat . Then the cat looked at me and my brother and jumped off the toilet system and glided through the window which was closed . So we both went back to bed & thought nothing of it . During the night i woke up from a dream of witches going round on 2 Carousels then only being 6 i never knew what a witch was . Since that night i have seen ghosts good ones felt the presence of them as well . But for the evil presence i get out of there where ever it is as i had a close call down the pit in 1978 when i seen a white fog coming towards me at the back as i never looked around me but what ever it was it was bad . The next night i was called in as one of the coal faces had a fire which wasn't showing up on my screen which i told the enquiry when i left to go down the pit i was told that a person lost his head in that area of the pit behind me and even deputies had seen it and had to retire from ill health .

When my mental health started to get bad I had dreams/sleep paralysis of a lady all in black at my bedroom door.
As it got worse she got closer until one day she was on top of me. That marked the worst time for me.
It was horrifying. The dream when she was on top of me was horrifying. Nothing has scared me more.

I have it more often than others. And I get full on Old Hag Syndrome. BUT BECAUSE it's happened SO MANY times, now once I wake up paralyzed, I might panic for a couple of seconds, but I get to a point where I can just tell myself, "It's JUST sleep paralysis, if you fall back asleep, it'll go away." And then I shut my eyes and drift off back to sleep, more often than not. Sometimes , I panic and have to wiggle a body part like a finger or toe to wake up but it takes SO MUCH EFFORT. The only way I can think to describe it, is it's like trying to run underwater or throw a punch swimming in a pool full of jello. I have often wondered if I could bring it on voluntarily in order to study it, lol. Maybe I'll try some things mentioned in this video. My episodes usually come randomly, or when I'm stressed out, last for up to a few minutes, and while I often sense a presence or figure in the room with me and feel weight on my body holding me down, I have yet to SEE anyone, but I'm putting in my brain NOW that if I ever do see someone, to ask them a few questions if I'm able lol, or to try telling the figure "Look, I know this is just sleep paralysis, and I've got an early day tomorrow, so if you could let me get back to sleep now that would be great." Let's see if it works.

@leightzmill I have 3 cats lol, they sleep w me and any noise or feeling like pressure on me other than the feeling of being pinned down, I just always figured is them laying with me or getting into something lol.
One of the honest to God, the scariest dreams I've EVER had, wasn't even sleep paralysis as far as I know. I fell asleep super deep super suddenly, and in my dream, I was sitting in my car in the driveway at night, and someone started banging on my window, demanding I open it. I could hear the banging on my window and could feel my car rocking as he tried to get in. I woke up so frantic when I jolted awake, I scared my cat, and he jumped about 3 ft in the air before landing on the floor across the room. He looked like a piece of popcorn popping, lol.

@@allisonhunter1063 i know what you mean by the dreams. Its rare these days that i have those deep power dreams. The sound thing is like your dream, you hear it like it's real. My last sleep paralysis I was SCANNED.
I perceived a bar of energy and SOUND that stretched from head to toe as I laid on my back and passed from my upper left swooping down to my left then CRASHING into my body causing every muscle to tense up as it slowly passed through me from left to right.
I couldn't even breathe as the energy passed through from left to right.
The instant it exited from my right the energy and sound swooped up to my upper right, (I knew it was coming for a second pass. That was the horror) passed OVER my whole body 2 feet above me to my left then started to swoop down for a SECOND pass through CRASHING into me and slowly going through my body exiting my right.
This was my last sleep paralysis.
The initial horror was a feeling like I was about to die.
The terror was knowing that this energy was going to pass through my body and pass through me a SECOND time as I was scanned.
The sound, I've only found one example that comes remotely close.
The intro sound to NIN - A Warm Place
The energy sound outside of my body was a mid octave
    "eeeeeeeeeeee"
But when it crashed THROUGH me it turned to a deep toned
    "NNNNNNNNNNNNNNN"

About 7000 years ago, when I was 4 or 5, I remember seeing an old hag looking in my bedroom window late at night. I even apparently screamed a few times for my parents, but of course there was no one there. But, I still recall her face clearly. This happened over a period of a year or so, I guess. We moved out of state and I not only never saw her again, I hadn't thought of the occurrences for years. I thought it was just dreams, but now I wonder... And, I recall feeling like I couldn't move!

Even though I think she's looking after me. As for her looks, imagine what a 150 year old granny would look. Her appearance always dark. Her colours black, brown, gray. Long gray hair, witch like face with a huge nose. Typical of how old school witches are represented.

I used to experience the “entity” presence on a semi-regular basis where it would start with me feeling someone beside me in the bed, then seeing the covers move as it drew closer. It terrified me. Then I started recognizing that I was asleep, becoming a lucid dream where I’m all-powererful and able to cast it out. That continues to happen and when I wake up I feel absolutely exhilarated and kind of tingly.

I've had it since i was about 14, with memories of it even younger. I kept it to myself for years as i didn't know what it was. I was about 25 when i found out there was a thing referred to as sleep paralysis, by talking to the bar maid at my local. A few years ago i accidentally learned how to stop her entering my bedroom, but (i don't believe in the paranormal as such, but this part does creep me at times tbh) i can feel her standing outsode the bedroom, on the landing. I can't be physically woken up during it, as i can mistake you for the paralysis woman and "defend myself".
I also and still get regularly the sound paralysis, heavy banging on the door etc. And i get the metallic purple spider that sometimes likes to stand on my pillow. The spider is worse than the old hag as my partner hets disturbed by that one.

When I was younger, I was fascinated by lucid dreaming and the possibility of astral projection. I used to try and induce sleep paralysis with the WILD (Wake induced lucid dream) method. I had my first experience and it was a little freaky, albeit not terrifying; as I felt in control to a degree. However, I definitely awoke something in my mind/body/world because a few months after my stint of trying to do these techniques, I was then plagued by sleep paralysis. Almost nightly for a while Id have it. It would then strike randomly and still to this day I'll probably have anywhere from one to four experiences a month. I've certainly had the old hag experience and it's super freaky. I've sort of gotten used to it, in the sense werebim not terrified, but its never a great time.

I saw her for 5-6 times throughout my life. First time I was between 3 and 4 years old. Latest was some 7 years ago. She never comes close to me. Always at a distance, looking at me from a doorway, peeking from behind a curtain or something similar. But she's always present through my SP episodes. Although she never harms me, I feel inexplicable anger towards her. But, I do believe she's a harbinger of bad things to come soon after her appearance. The feeling of experiencing something like that is unlike anything else.

My one episode of sleep paralysis happened in my first trimester, a little more than 11 years ago. It was a wolf, running down a hill toward me. It jumped on my chest and growled in my face. I could smell it's breath, see the yellow drool oozing from its mouth... I had to force myself to sit up. I couldn't breathe during it, and I remember that my surroundings, the living room where I was sleeping, was coming back into view behind this wolf. I haven't had anything like that happen since and I'm immensely grateful.

This one was a strange experience. Way back in 2007, my wife, now ex, and I were driving back to Arizona from California after Thanksgiving. After about a 5 or 6 hour drive, we get home and it's about 1 or 2 in the morning. We get ready for bed, we finally get under the blankets to get some sleep. As I turned off the lights I rememeber looking the towards the bathroom that we had in our bedroom. And standing the doorway was a giant shadow of person, entity or whatever it was. I didn't make a big deal or gave it much thought or attention and simply closed my eyes to fall asleep. Here is where it gets strange. I woke up to my wife asking me to help her. I don't know how I heard her because she was whispering if you want to even call it that it so low. I shook her awake and she was in tears terrified. She begins to tell me that she felt this giant pressure in her chest. Like when someone sits on you and is holding you down. Whatever it was, she said it was whispering something to her and that's when she began "yelling" for me to help her. She was screaming as loud as she could but what I heard was her whispering. I saw the dark figure but it went after her for some reason. I don't speak of this very often because people always chalk it up to we were both dreaming but it happened. I didn't even tell her that I had seen a dark figure until 2 years later when we moved back to California.

It's the most frightening experience I deal with weekly. I've never seen any of the commonly talked about phenomenon. I see a child always in 1940s clothing with a very old style cap on his head. He doesn't look at me but i see him. Everytime im forced to blink, he appears closer without me ever seeing him actually walk and this happens about 3x until i close my eyes for the 4th time only to feel my pillow being pushed down over my face. I feel the bend of the pillow and pressure from above it being pushed down. Who could this lil dude be? Why 1920s to 1940s look? Why i have never seen his face or him move? Only happens as im forced to close my eyes from strain. He also has never spoke. My heart pounds every time and i believe this is it.. im gonna have a heart attack or suffocate and no matter how scared i get.. it doesn't wake me until the pillow is being pushed over my face and this lasts for what feels like 10-20 min because at first he doesn't move at all. I have to wait for it every time and it's still as scary. Lights are on for the rest of the night as i am.

I’ve experienced sleep paralysis multiple times in the last year, it never used to happen before. I tried to avoid it once by sleeping on my front but it happened anyway. It felt like someone was pushing my head into my pillow with a lot of force and I could vividly see a shadowy figure whilst squeezing my eyes shut. The first time it happened, I heard my door shut and then it felt like I couldn’t breathe for about a minute.

Edit: This story is very unbelievable but I don't care about that. I'm leaving this comment in hopes that someone else has shared the same exact experience.
I had never experienced any of the things -- that I've seen during sleep paralysis episodes -- physically touching me until about a week ago. It was an older woman and she held me down by placing both hands on my chest, with her knee in my stomach, and every single bit of it felt real. It was painful and I couldn't breathe due to the force/weight on my chest, and it seemed to last for quite awhile. Then, it suddenly felt as if I'd passed out/blacked out and came to shortly afterward. She was nowhere in sight and I was finally able to sit all the way up. Oddly enough, I was still in pain as if someone had actually done those things. It bothers me that I can't explain this sh*t away like I typically do because my abdomen is still tender several days later, exactly where her knee had been, and I can't come up with a solid explanation for it.
I've had many, MANY sleep paralysis episodes over the years and have had "sleep people" get pretty close to me but NEVER had I ever been touched, nor had I ever thought they were at all real. I'd never been able to make out that much detail before either, like I was able to do this time, i.e. the face, the hair, even the teeth. I'm still struggling with it mentally because it just doesn't feel right; Something was way too different. I know the brain is capable of some pretty incredible things but fabricating THAT level of reality? I understand how and why such episodes happen and that I was theoretically going from a dream/sleep state to a waking state but I was awake enough -- during the time she was holding me down -- that I was able to squirm around and was beginning to sit up and therefore much closer to consciousness than I usually would be when experiencing sleep paralysis.
I'm definitely not saying that I had some sort of encounter with an actual entity or that any of that was REAL-real, but I've still not been able to convince myself that it WASN'T real. I've spent the last few days worrying that I'd have the same type of episode again, but part of me honestly wants it to happen again so I can either "confirm" it or debunk it entirely; I know it occured, I just want to know what "it" was, if that makes sense.

Do/ have you ever been in an old building of sort and wondered why spots were cold and other spots were COLDER? Have you ever heard whispers and wondered who made an echo in the room but no one was there? You have had horrible experiences and to share is brave of you. Our world that we live in is filled with demons of many sorts. Put your trust in God/Jesus Christ and they will leave you alone and let you get rest. I've learned to do this and not just for me but for my family as well. I've been haunted before but towards the end. . .I was close to being killed. I learned how to accept my "gift" and that is when I learned how to listen. . plus I can see them as well. I thought it was fluke but it turns out I have family members that have what I have only mine is stronger than theirs. Be Brave and Share. . .Others might be able to be more helpful, just know that you are NOT ALONE.

It’s really not that difficult to find a way to mitigate this - if you’re fearful of what you can’t control when having this happen - put something on your bed and place it between you and the void of your room. Something that gives you pleasant feelings. This can help to curb the feeling of not being in control. If you only focus on the negative aspects you will find it more difficult to move beyond.

I've never seen this particular entity, but the one single time I had sleep paralysis I saw the "guy" in the wide brimmed hat, aka the hatman. That was utterly terrifying and confusing. What's interesting is that I had that experience before I even knew that this pitch black hat wearing presence was a phenomenon that actually happens to other people. It's downright insane how other people see the exact same thing - without even having explored the topic beforehand, or at the very least have no prior knowledge of this entity at all.
Glad that only happened that single time. That thing can F off back to whatever dark abyss he came from.

Have had this a handful of times. Only once could I make out a greenish face but for the most part, they always had a shadowy dark figure. Only two I can really recall in detail. The one with the green face was one time where I opened my eyes and the face was maybe a foot away from mine. I couldn’t move and all I could do was stare at that face but luckily, this only lasted a few terrifying seconds. The other time I can recall has the most detail as I believe it lasted the longest. I remember I fell asleep on the couch while watching The Godfather. I had woken up mid movie but couldn’t move at all but I could still watch the TV. I think I remember it being the scene where Vito was talking with Sollozzo about his drug business. Anyway, I was so scared because I could clearly tell what was going on on the TV but couldn’t move my body. Suddenly, this shadowy figure emerged from just out of sight and then “floated” over top of me and then out the window behind the couch. As soon as it was out the window, I could move again. These types of experiences haven’t happened in well over 5 years and it’s not like my sleep or sleep schedule has improved or anything so it’s weird.

As a kid I would repeatedly see her in my dreams. I would always be in my house walking past a room then she would see me and I would get caught by her then become paralyzed unable to move or scream with an intense horrific fear. They’re would no words from her or me just fear. There’s one time I remember her violently shaking me and then being woken up by my mom because she said I was shaking violently on while I was sleeping on the couch.
I eventually learned to deal with it by just accepting her and the fear. I think she got upset by that because she would just got away and I would immediately wake up. Honestly now that I’m thinking about it I haven’t had those dreams since I was maybe 15 and I’m almost 30 now.

Have experienced sleep paralysis since my late teens, but never saw The Hag because one thing I _cannot_ do is open my eyes. Not only am I an insomniac, when I do sleep, I am a semi-circle sleeper, moving right side / back / left side / back / right side /etc. all night long. Every paralysis experience I've had has occurred when I'm side sleeping. There have been 'voices,' 'entities' heavy enough that the mattress moves when 'they' sit down, and, on occasion, the sensation of an entire body lying down behind me. I've been here often enough to know that either making a sound or moving some part of my body will end the episode, which has always been the case. It always takes too long [of course] and is pretty stressful, fighting to move while frozen solid. Interestingly enough, more often than not, I will have been sleeping with a hand under my head with the heel of my hand pressing into the carotid artery. I suspect - at least in my case - my oxygen starved brain is fighting to get me to wake up and move that hand so I don't stroke!

I have had a lot more sleep paralysis since moving into this house. One night after a party (which I left early) I went to sleep as normal. But in the night I was awoken by a really REALLY ugly charactered man who was sitting on top of me.. I was so scared I shut my eyes because I couldn’t move. I turned to my right side when I was able to move but must have fallen back to sleep when a terrifying woman who somehow I knew what she looked like and was stomping up the stairs to come and get me! It felt like she was as much inside my mind as in the house., I managed to wake up but was really shaken, because it felt like what I would describe as a psychic attack. I was left with an eeey sense of foreboding afterwards. The woman was old and skinny wearing all black a sort of dress that looked hundreds of years old and tatty and worn, she has looooong black hair but was bald in some places, I remember her scrawny fingers. Still creeps me out when I think of it now, and it was almost two years ago.
In my early twenties I used to get a lot of hypnogogic experiences, but once I read about it (after the first one) I knew I could just relax. But this one - it was different, it felt predatory and psychically violating… weird stuff. I wish I knew what it meant. I think it means there are evil forces that want to possess us (perhaps they come from inside us?) I don’t know… but I once summoned a demon force in a dream, and it became so intense I got the fear and had to wake up. So much power ran through my veins, I was psychologically killing someone off…

Funny thing about the Hat Man, though: I first saw him before I even knew he was a thing.
He was very irritated when I looked at him and basically just thought, "Oh. It's one of _those_ nights. Alright, let's get this over with." In the end, all he did was glare at me. The second time he showed up, however, he did something that truly scared the hell out of me and was smugly satisfied about it, like he had asserted his power and put me in my place. When people talk about it like its a supernatural thing it does make me laugh. The term "sleep paralysis" is when during the rapid eye movement sleep stage REM, your brain protects yourself from moving your limbs while dreaming so you don't hurt yourself. The paralysis part happens especially when you start to regain awareness when going into coming out of REM stage. And technically its not paralysis. Its not harmful, but can cause anxiety and a sensationof pressure on chest and head. Wiggle your fingers or toes and within a few seconds and it should pass quickly through your body. If it keeps occurring consult a doctor. Usually this occurs to patients who suffer from stress, overworked, obesity or insomnia. No hag involved.

I have concluded that a good percentage of these are demonic in nature. I saw a documentary about severe forms of this. One guy, who called on God during a terrifying episode was immediately delivered from it. I've read about others who did the same and were released "in the name of God." Makes sense to me, as a believer in the spiritual realms, that demons might pray upon us in that vulnerable state of consciousness. Had similar experiences myself. I notice it's more likely to happen if I'm very tired or distressed.

You know, whether is supernatural or not, the concept is insanely scary. I mean, think about it. If it's totally supernatural, that means that entities are messing with people when they are at their most vulnerable, fast asleep. But if there is a scientific explanation and not supernatural at all, that means that the human brain can mess with itself in a very very messed up way.

I have sleeping paralysis. The more stress I have, the worse it gets. The most I had it in my 20s and the worse after I moved out from my parents home and went to university. At that time almost every night a dark figure was lying next to me, I was unable to directly look at it, but I could clearly feel and touch it. Sometimes it was lying with one half on top of me, sometimes it pushed/pressed me against my closet (standing directly beside my bad like a wall) and a few times it even choked me. After that I had red marks on my neck.
One night something pressed constantly on my chest, like someone would do cpr on me. A few days later I found out that the mother of a friend died from a heart attack at exact the same night and her husband did cpr on her.
Nowadays I really rarely have them and sometimes I can only hear people talking, like they are standing next to me … but to be honest, these are much scarier than the ones where I can see shadow figures …
