Facing competition from mass-produced items and lacking heirs to take up the trade, the traditional manufacturing of religious craft is in danger of dying out in Singapore. The Say Tian Hng Buddha Shop, which is over a century old, is one of the last of its kind. Owner Ng Yeow Hua and his family are trying to save the heritage of the carving technique by reinventing the business, running workshops as well as educational programmes on Chinese culture.

Am I the only one who finds the 3 different ways each generation speaks as facinating as the history of the craft itself?

The unique way each of them speaks was shaped by the cross-generational transition from Chinese dialects > Standard Mandarin > English, partly due to the nation's Bilingual Policy, in which English is taught as first language, while Mandarin, the second language, is taught as the designated mother tongue of the Chinese community.

This is beautiful. The classic arts and literature are what allow us to connect with past generations. They can lead us to revelations about our own lives or allow us to understand complex people and issues. Just because one may not understand the value does not mean that the value and meaning are inherently lost. Sending love from this side of the globe ❤.

In Indonesia high ancestors and gods usually prefer handmade idols, even they're just hand-stitched dolls or simple carved stone. Business opportunities still exist if you look at markets further afield 🙏

Everything passes away: nationalities pass away, nations pass away, countries pass away, and traditions pass away, just as people pass away. This is the nature of samsara - birth, old age, sickness, death. The same rule for all materiality - conscious and unconscious.
