Kitchen Hack For Washing Produce

- How To Properly Wash your Fruits and Vegetables:
1. Put your fruits and veggies into a bowl and add a couple of teaspoons of baking soda.
2. Fill the bowl up with cold water and let everything sit for at least fifteen minutes.
3. Dump that nasty water and rinse your produce as usual before storing it in an air-tight container.
It doesn't take much time, but it'll help remove all the pesticides, dirt, and whatever else might be on your produce.
That's how you can really get your fruits and veggies clean. No B.S.
- Chef Mike
Just a heads up. Don’t put your damp fruit in an airtight container. They will spoil sooner.
Complete bullshit. Put a small piece of paper or something to absorb moisture in the air and they will last much longer. Otherwise just properly dry before storing them.
@@Alias_Ex It's almost like saying, "Don't put your damp fruits in an air tight container. They will spoil sooner." Almost. 😶

I'm actually a Horticultural engineer. The "dirt" is actual tannins from strawberries which diluted with the water. There are no pesticides in a finished product, there are FDA regulations on when is the last time before picking up a fruit you are alloud to treat any plant. Apples are covered in a thin layer of wax and citrus has fungicide as they go bad easily, that's it.
Is that why you can polish apples to look shiny?
@@youngnutsack17 You mean the wax on an apple?
@@lollmemmSm0keweed yes
@@youngnutsack17 cool
So do I wash the wax or not?
They don't spray pesticides on ripe fruit, it's sprayed much earlier in the season, and is absorbed by the plants that produce the fruit. It's in the produce not on it. On the surface there could be a ton of bacteria or possibly parasite eggs though depending on how much it's been handled and where it was processed/stored, so washing it may still prevent illness, but it won't get rid of pestecides.
Ok so you've basically explained exactly why they spray fruit with pesticide. When fruit is picked it is then packed and put in a lorry to go from Spain to Ireland or isreal to Russia...tomatoes strawberries all of them can get mold bacteria insect eggs on it ...if its not sprayed with whatever the fugg it is they spray on them before packing them it would spoil. I dont know if its pesticide but its chemical spray that is extremely adhesive. If you've ever worked on a fruit farm you'd know the. Shit they spray on them after being picked ..you have to wear a full body suite and a ventilator in the spraying sheds and even when you get home to shower its duck to your skin in your hair stuck to you like a smell of ...anyway that's what they're trying go remove but I doubt baking soda removes it. It took weeks to shower that stuff off
I have been saying this for years! People do not listen to us!
@cynthiadickerson5403 but they do. Maybe they're not pesticides but my boyfriend has worked doing fruit picking and after they pick the fruit they put it in a big polytunnel and they spread it with this green stick stuff. They have to wear hazmat suites. At least for tomatoes and strawberries they used that. It stops them rotting or any insects getting into the packaging ..its disgusting toxic stuff whatever it is. Maybe it's fungicide not pesticide but they do spray it with chemicals.n
@@mgarz7891 so that shouldn't happen in 15 minutes. If the fruit you're soaking are soft fruit like strawberries and they go mushy after 15 minutes they may be already gone off ..they should be firm and juicy when you buy them not soft but kinda crisp like a cucumber. If they're a plum or peach they can be soft but again they should stay the same for 15 minutes. Fruit are not porous so they don't absorb any of the water toure soaking them in. If anything they're hydrophobic.
Do they need to soaked with baking soda ?
Or just water is OK?
Missing the most important step : Dry the fruit before putting it in any container...
The fact that everyone is commenting the same thing because all these videos forget to point that out. I imagine everyone cleaning it like this are definetly putting their damp produce into a container without it being dry. Mostly because they forgot or don't feel like doing the extra step because it was fine last time.
makes sense. you never see strawberry containers without perforations. he definitely should have mentioned that for the younger people with less common sense
or any fruits but duh lol blueberries raspberries they all come in containers that allow for airflow to keep them crisp
Put some clean and dry garlic in the container before putting the clean and dry strawberries in the container. By this way, the strawberries (or any fruits) will remain fresh longer.
Don't necessarily need to dry them. Use a salad Spinner after and then line the bottom and top with paper towels
Dry your fruit completely if you're going to put them in an air-tight container.
I think any advice is wasted on this dude lol. Wouldn't trust him with my dullest knife or a handle-less frying pan
@lowkey.fuckedup just generally speaking lol. He may use his strawberries right away, but this advice implies storage for extended periods. Just not full info.
Don’t wash your fruit it still taste like shit cause it’s mass production
You should never store fruit in a air tight container
You can put them back in the original container, unless they are cut or hulled then they need an airtight seal.
Correction - You should never rinse fruit and put it back in the fridge unless it is 100% dry. All you’re doing is speeding up the rotting process.
Oh no my 6 oz of strawberries will only last for 4 days instead of 5 😭

75% of non-organic fresh produce that sold in the U.S. contains some kind of pesticides. Even google tells you that. Thats why its always said to wash the food before you eat it. The thing that you should not actually wash is raw chicken. Washing or rinsing raw chicken does not get rid of the bacteria on it, cooking it does. All rinsing it does is spread the bacteria around your kitchen.

For thin skinned fruits (and vegetables for that matter), there's no "washing off" the pesticides, no matter what you do. The pesticides are absorbed into the flesh during the growing process, and they're there to stay.
There's a list put out every year called the "dirty dozen". It lists the 12 worst fruits and vegetables when it comes to pesticide contamination (as well as the 12 best).
Unfortunately, the only way to truly have pesticide free produce is to grow it yourself. This is because even if you buy "organic", the truth is the criteria is completely unregulated. In reality, the term is used more often than not as a gimmick to get people to pay more for questionably grown produce.
Truth is, there ain't nothing easy in life, shortcuts usually come with penalties, and tons of people are just downright unscrupulous and out to get you.
Best to keep that in mind folks.

I give my berries a white distilled vinegar bath for 3-5 minutes. Drain, rinse twice. They last longer in the fridge. It knocks off mold or yeast or whatever makes them mold so quickly from the store. One part vinegar, two parts water.
Never underestimate a chef wearing a Dewalt hat.
It still soaks inside the soft and thin skinned fruits, so you’ll still eat the pesticides
Exactly. I was laughing because people don't understand this. Just make more money and buy organic fruits and veggies. Any fruits and veggies with a hard shell (Avocado, Oranges, etc.) then it doesn't matter if organic or not
The pesticides are absorbed up through the roots along with water, so you aren't going to be able to wash them off anyway.

chemical engineer, here. sadly, this video's hack is horse 💩.
the solubility of organophosphates & carbamate insecticides, two of the most common insecticides, ≈200 mg/L that is very low solubility. adding a base (baking soda) to the wash water won't increase the solubility.
atrazine, most common herbicide in USA, is even less dissolvable in water 70 mg/L.
i don't know why he suggests cold water. cold water is an even worse solvent for organic molecules (not well solubilize in water) than hot water.
*you're better off with warm soapy water and a thorough rinse in warm water*
however this doesn't remove the portion of pesticide that plant tissue adsorbs and some pesticide metabolites are more toxic than the pesticide. so if you want zero pesticides you gotta grow your own (organic isn't always what it's advertised to be).
also as someone else in the comments wisely pointed out, putting damp fruit in a sealed container will accelerate spoilage. that's not an issue in a busy commercial kitchen but he advertised it for home kitchens.

My suggestion is to add two tablespoons of salt 2 tbsp of baking soda and apple cider vinegar a lot of it and then leave it for 15 minutes and then you can see the difference of everything and I mean everything comes out then when the 15 minutes is up you will see the difference and you can finally rinse it out very thoroughly by throwing it into a colander which it can go out the other way but truth be honest Vincent very thoroughly and then wait until it's dry and then put it in a container a glass container
You want pesticides-free fruits and vegetables? Start growing them on your own. The pesticides are not just on the surface of fruits and vegetables. They're absorbed inside them throughout the growing process. When they spray the crop with pesticides, it goes into soil from where the crops absorb it through their roots.
