David Berkowitz - The Son of Sam Full Interview

  • Berkowitz was arrested on August 10, 1977 and subsequently indicted for eight shootings. He confessed to all of them, and initially claimed to have been obeying the orders of a demon manifested in the form of a dog belonging to his neighbor "Sam". Berkowitz was found mentally competent to stand trial. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, was found guilty, and was sentenced to six consecutive life sentences with possibility of parole after 25 years, in state prison. He subsequently admitted that the dog-and-devil story was a hoax. In the course of further police investigations, Berkowitz was also implicated in many unsolved arsons in the city.
Intense media coverage of the case lent a kind of celebrity status to Berkowitz, which many observers noted that he seemed to enjoy. In response, the New York State Legislature enacted new statutes, known popularly as "Son of Sam laws", designed to keep criminals from financially profiting from the publicity created by their crimes. The statutes have remained law in New York despite various legal challenges, and similar laws have been enacted in several other states.
During the mid-1990s, he amended his confession to claim that he had been a member of a violent Satanic cult that orchestrated the incidents as ritual murder. A few law enforcement authorities have said that his claims might be credible, but he remains the only person ever charged with the shootings. A new investigation of the murders began in 1996, but was suspended indefinitely after inconclusive findings.

He knows he isn't ever getting out. I feel as though he's absolutely genuine in his remorse and i dont believe hes using religion as some shield for his actions forty plus years ago. I'm not religious at all. Dont buy into any of it personally. I just believe he's reformed and if ever let out, wouldnt so much as steal a stick of bubble gum, let alone cause anyone harm. Nobody is the same person they were forty years ago. Nobody. Not excusing anything he did at all. Just saying its ashame. The entire case. He seems like a genuine guy who would help anyone today.

I honestly don’t know what to say because on one hand, imagine the families of the victims seeing him living and breathing while their loved ones are dead; on the other hand, this man seems harmless and like he really has changed.

Scrivo in italiano.

Why will tell a 4/5 years old child her mom died giving birth to him.? He wasn’t even a pre- k aged child at the time unable to understand death. Even for the 1950s standards mentality that was a not smart thing to do to say the least. Sometimes, I think David is a product of the time’s deficiencies he grew up plus the loneliness he was experiencing. I believe the murders came about as the results of David lashing out with pain. Perhaps, getting associated with the wrong crowd didn’t helped him. Fotos of his Yonkers apartment tells me everything I need to know about his current date to date life back then.

I've followed this case for a while and from different angles ; watched various interviews and read some of the books about the case. First of all, the police messed up the day he was arrested, by breaking into his car without a warrant where they found the gun, some letters and other very implicating items, basically the whole case. If he hadn't decided to take full responsibility (I believe he felt pressured to take the fall); all the proves would have been thrown out of the window and the prosecution would have no case. From then on, nypd did everything to speed up the case and convict him and close the books hoping no-one would go back and review the case. That said: *THIS IS A CHANGED MAN*. I mean, not persuing the parole board thinking, it would may cause emotional pain to the relatives of his victims, says EVERYTHING.
I'll bet some folks are already upset seeing him in peace with himself and God. To these people I'd say: prison should mean REABILITATION, he's doing just that, helping others at the same time.

How can you say that God could not save wretched souls like David and myself?! Is there anything to hard for the Lord? Jesus came to save the sinners but the righteous. Beware if the leaven if the pharisees. Don't be so puffed up in pride thinking you are any better than the rest of us. We all are sinners and fall short of the glory of God that we all need saving. If God can save people like David and I, He can save anyone. You are not God or Jesus, humble yourself before the Lord abd repent. This only substantiates my theory he was living vicariously as an evil son of Sam, Sam being the actual dad next door with sons, whom he envied. Jealous, he acted out as the rejected, evil son.
Also, He did so with a deep hatred, resentment, bitterness, and spite and zero disregard for life or humanity.
Holding a mirror up to his psychological victim, aka reporters, journalists, and the public taken in by the sight... They all love what they see... As he smirks, knowing he's taken them in.
37:00 😂 I hadn't watched these interviews and had zero fore knowledge of this smirk being a "thing" and others noting it... However, look how it gets in his crawl. Yup.
Look how animated he gets, watch his eyes get angry about this, then he just can't help himself, he had to do it again and attempt excusing it away, showing his "tell", his evil smirk.
For those saying he couldn't travel 2 blocks in 2 minutes.. Yes, you can. I mapped it on Google and average walking this distance in the Bronx NY is 4 min. So riding his bike or running, this would be a easy distance to cover.
Not to mention he admitted he did everything in another interview, blaming only the demons in his head.
Notice the dog thing also gets to him... Imo it's because it's closer to the truth, how he created this persona as being in this family, and he connected himself closer to the dog. Maybe even jealous of the dog getting the family love and attention as well. It was also a way to hurt them in his vengeance against this family he envied. This embarrasses him for some reason and he hates everyone focusing on it. It's HIS secret. The only power he holds. If everyone had the answer, they'd have zero value for him and he knows it.
Everything he discusses is as if giving logistical data, as if analyzing watching a movie, rather than any sincere personal experience, emotional connection, reactions, etc. He's just holding up a huge facade for everyone to look at, similar to the mirror effect I mentioned.
    Some of my comments elsewhere:
I think he envied the actual sons of Sam and created an evil black sheep demented character, an evil son of Sam, which he took on himself. Being envious of them, he acted out as if having demons in his mind who he personified as a way to escape accountability.
I think he had an envious rage against them. Likely abused by men in his family and perceived in the real sons of Sam and their family..., an illusion of life he wanted and never had... Regardless how true or false this reality he built, actually was.
    Just some thoughts.
** Regarding the author he tricked into entertaining him for years and some of my other comments:
The author you speak of, I think he was psychologically led into becoming a puppet, a play thing, for the killer. I left a better explanation of this under the last video I watched. I'll get the info and reply with it.
I do wonder if the killer took on a demented persona, considering himself the evil son of Sam, in contrast to his good sons. He probably had abuse from his own father or male in his family and was beyond envious of these sons, for what he believed their life to be like.. Which he didn't have and couldn't achieve. Jealousy. But this is just a breif thought.

Comments I left on the "most off productions" video interview with the writer, I left the time stamps, just copied and pasted to share here if anyone is interested :
41:21 "the group" are the demons in his own mind imo.
All the interaction and information with the press is highly valuable currency when your in prison, from time away from your cell to babble in this setting, to commissary and clout amongst prisoners.
      * Obviously the psychological game he got to play was surely quite a dopamine hit for his demented mind.
He continually toyed with the mind of the unqualified interrogator / journalist, who seems both nieve and thinks to highly of himself to question even his self, giving this psychological maniac, full control and free run of his mind and conclusions.
      ***********
1:12:07 my gosh, nothing like feeding a killer... leading questions, then feel proud of yourself when he agrees. 🤣😂
      Oh man, this is RICH!
1:17:22 of course he writes to people. 😂🙄 Seems he studied this Christian author and took on his personality to gain approval and social acceptance. Echoing back to him, words he would hear or expect to hear, from this author. Like a morphing parasite.
How did no one catch this?

      57:02
57:35 he prayed forgiveness... "not even sure what I was saying"...
      🤨 What?! Come on.
58:40 true what he states about the faith. I'm unsettled by the way he avoids his true experience. He tells a lot around it, but doesn't go IN it.
Repentance involves being open and honest with God and confessing all your sins, seeking to make ammends and restore those you've harmed many times over. I need to do this, you need to do this, we all need to do this. You don't just take the forgives and run off like your totally cool. No. Take a sincere, humble, sabbatical with God, fast, pray, listen, lay everything down before him, search scripture and wait on the Lord, who will lead you into all truth by the Holy Spirit.
Make ammends and abundantly restore those hurting, especially that which you caused.
1:06:53 I won't go deep into his continual victim hood implications he inserts constantly, even subtly.
I do pray he's sincerely come to Christ, but that's between him and God, who knows all things.
Interesting he became Christian, not Jewish like his family.
1:07:41 he's going into his life not ending prematurely... almost seems like mocking his victims.
As if saying God preserved his life many times to insult them... You could infer he mocks and smirks to himself about this, knowing the victims families will instantly refer such a contrast and comparison in their mind.. As if he implies "God didn't preserve those lives."... Wow. How Very cruel.
While it's my opinion that he realizes this, and it's intentional, it might be subconscious. Either way, it's despicable and it is a LIE.
No life is more valuable to God than another, we're equal and we all experience the consequences of free will choices made by ourselves and others, be it good or evil.
The person making such choices is simultaneously beholden to the responsibility of said choice. Not God. Though God will guide us and be with us through everything as we accept and listen to his guidance, God causes NO evil. Do not be decieved.
(*example: God did not cause a childhood friend with cancer to get cancer.. pesticides did, which were created by someone that is definitely not God.
The same goes for many illnesses with causes we may never figure out in our lifetime, but a likely culprit is medications, vaccines, pesticides, big banks and corporations crushing people financially causing homelessness... On and on... It's us. Every time. That's why he teaches us to restore people many times over the best we're able. It will help everyone and end suffering if we all do this. It's our choice to do it or not do it, you see the consequences.)
This man before us caused great evil. I hear no sincere, deep regret, repentance, desire to restore others, etc. I hear him express his own victim hood and excuses to "why?"...
** I've seen and experienced deep repentance, fall on your face in private before God, weaping and mourning in full sorrow, regret, etc., yet full of humble thanksgiving for his grace and mercy, surrendering your pride ego and everything to God's grace and mercy. More than words can express nor should be discussed public if not only for teaching, but just comparing to what we see with this man, the passion of sincerity and full responsibility is lacking. In my opinion only. Only God knows the truth.
Notice he doesn't mention deserving death, only brags about being preserved. My opinion is that if you were repentant, you would feel more than worthy of death, punishment and hell for what you've done and you'd freely give any and all answers that would give rest to the souls of those you've caused to suffer... Regardless of what effect it might have on your very life, including prison life and your court cases. Yet he continues withholding much. For that, I can not take him seriously on this issue.
1:08:00 So he claims his best prison experiences he ever had was getting his neck slashed? Interview guy should've asked more about that statement.
      1:09:30 smirking abundantly
1:09:57 maybe some sincerity, God only knows. He's perfected the act so many years, I think he's callused the same lawyers call some witnesses scarred, where their testimony is overly produced.
1:12:27 parole coming up... Ooooh... I didn't know he even had this chance. Things are making more sense. He wants out by his own strong admission and plans for such.
1:13:04 oh my gosh he's fishing, big time, to get a response from whoever is before him as to what his victims have been saying and how they'd respond if he attempted parole, etc. 😮 Wow!!! Intently looking for a response or body language that answers his real questions about the victims and their families. Wish we saw everyone in the room and if he's nodding or giving any feedback to this especially!!! He's fishing for letters of support as well. Why else bring that up.
1:17:05 He's asking the interviewer if the victims would respond this way, without actually asking it and closely watching for responses. Wow wow wow!!
He grants himself as "taking the higher road" by not seeking parole. Higher than what? Sure we can guess, but I would've pushed harder for specific answers.
Would be interesting to know if he attended his parole hearing!!!
1:18:12 back to victimhood and his neck... Maybe we'll hear how this was the best experience of his prison life...
Smiling while telling officers he was cut. Uh okay...
Watch how excited and animated he gets when talking about this... While smiling.
"I guess someone doesn't like him"
      Really? 😂
Officer Montgomery... Boy he really remembers this event like it was the second coming!
I never want him claiming to have memory issues.
1:20:30 he stops himself when relaying the back n forth with the doctor, omitting the joke he told the doctor... Caught himself and ensured he didn't slip up.
Now I want to know what they discussed and what that joke was.
1:21:08 that's prison life... This is when he felt accepted and liked it. IMO
" I was just another walking wounded " interesting persona he's taken on...
1:22:00 "so I became..." "I stood my ground" "Dave is a stand up guy" "they gave me..." "I earned a lot of respect"... "that was my test".. "I can do my time and be a man"
Wouldn't snitch after a week back to work...
Earned respect by not snitching, he claims prisoners think he's a "stand up guy", became "cool", we can trust him, he's one of us, he WON'T TALK"... earned trust and a Reputation, "put me up to a whole new level of trust and respect at the facility"
To this day he's got that respect.
Remember what he told us, with GREAT PASSION and emotion, including the biggest smiles I've ever seen on him....
      He "WON'T TALK.."
I think that's the truth. That's what he's proud of. He's smiling and excited about even just retelling this, like he got a massive dopamine hit. I think it defines him well.
      He won't talk.
So much which people really want to know... But... He won't talk.... Though he says many words. IMO
"To this very day they respect me."
" Good came out of it."
💥 This is the MOST TELLING portion of this interview thus far.
The passion, emotion, excitement, etc. while fully animated, smiling so big hits dimples show as he's reliving it...
THIS... THIS is what I would expect in MUCH GREATER portion, when he retells his conversion to Christ, repenting, etc...
Which SHOULD be his most important and "greatest experience" in prison... FAR beyond what HE admits was his
      "GREATEST prison EXPERIENCE"
Referring to getting his neck slashed!
      VERY telling.

I want to restate I hope his faith in Jesus is true and his conversion real. I'm only analyzing this as an imperfect person who's curious about all this. No sweat if you disagree with anything, I might be wrong. No feelings hurt, it's cool.
1:28:12 how is a serial killer allowed to have all these communications and "friends" on the outside?
I wonder if his victims were granted the dignity of having the final approval of such privileges. Prisoners have endless hours available to research psychology, linguistics, body language and plot their manipulation of potential new types of victims. This seems potentially dangerous. I hope it's forbidden they send much of anything to his account.
I think it would be wise to require a certification class taught by a wise psychologist for anyone to contact long time prisoners, for their own protection, including not writing them in their will, etc. I don't want loving elders getting scammed. Even if this situation is innocuous, I'm sure others are not.
1:36:13 interesting he wanted only to talk to her alone. 🙄🤨🤔
Even against her will. That's kinda suspicious.
He's got a website?! 😮 If I was a victim of a horrendous crime, I would never be okay with all this! What in the world?!
Part of the safety your granted by your offender being away in prison, is the fact they can't interject in life, no communication, etc. This is nuts that he's given such freedom! It's a mockery.
Holy crap I just checked, he's got a very active website, with photos and everything. Wow! 😮
He claimed he wouldn't ask for parole, yet he did. He tried to get parole in 2916 and I can't find anything about the ones after that but he's got one coming up this may.
How's this justice for victims to have to relive everything every two years forever?!
In looking those things up, I found multiple times he's changed his story. I found there were fires they suspect him of, so if he's a Christian and taking full responsibility, why hasn't he told the full truth?
It makes even more sense now as to why he's kept this facade and psychological game going on so long... He's eligible for parole every 2 years! This is abhorrent and so wrong for the victims and families etc. Wretched.
      Let them have PEACE.
Stop giving criminals parole options constantly!
Stop giving prisoners all this public access!
HOLY SMOKES I had no idea about all this!!
Seems there's a battle about the son of Sam laws about prisoners making money off their crimes while in prison, wonder if this is his battle or something else? Did he get money from all this?! Oh my gosh. If so and he didn't turn it all over to the victims, woah... Man that's really sick.
This guy needs to go serve his time and his public engagement needs to hault.
Many innocent, nieve and ignorant people are getting decieved, psychologically abused and used, like a cult.
1:34:22 like this elderly lady. 😡 Shame on the prison for aiding and abeting in this!!!

1:45:29 YOU paid a big price?! Woah guy. Dang.
1:47:00 tragic period for YOU?! ...
      YOU lost everything?!! 😮
YOU paid a big price? I just can't get over this guy!
      More crap he said:
I remember running the streets, biking all over.. 🤔
Going on about his misunderstood childhood... Truency and running the streets... Family estranged now after crimes... HE paid a big price! 😮 THE NERVE TO SAY THIS STUFF!!
"I'll be leaving the earth with a lot of Good memories? 😮 WTF
He said he Could see for miles all over the neighborhood from his home... 🤔
      Feels like a missionary...
      Considers himself a BLESSED person...
1:47:45 "I won't let People define me by the crimes that happened while I was in a difficult time of my life, not in my right mind, with others influencing me with Satanism during a tragic period getting out of the army, everyone going on living their life getting married etc, I felt like the odd man out, I was just lonely, searching for my place in the world"
      But.. I'M a SURVIVOR 😲😲😲
      (wow.)
"but it all worked out for good in the long run"😮
(I can't quit thinking holy smokes!)
      1:48:17
      A HAPPY ENDING... WTF
** All that crazy, especially at the end, really makes me think my initial guess about him taking on that persona, regarding the son of his neighbor Sam... As accurate. I had little info on this case. I'm shocked they just let him freely communicate with anyone like he has been. What a game he's playing with everyone. Obviously the first goal is parole. But hey, he's had a happy ending, he's blessed, and he's a SURVIVOR.
😡 What a mockery and smack in the face of his actual victims and survivors. May they rest in peace and find comfort. The prison should be ashamed for aiding and abeting this behavior! They need to knock it off. Wow!

A true paranoid scitzaphrenic can be treated and stabilized with drugs, but almost all of them are never completely cured. He deserves justice and no forgiveness for the many lives he took.

The more I think about it, here is a guy who brutally killed and injured multiple people destroying them and hurting their families and friends. Costing tax payers probably a million or more through tthe whole ordeal. And still costing people money feeding and housing him. He probably eats better than most homeless and poor people. Now he has religion and telling how he helps people in prison and everybody likes him and respects him. He was tried as a sane person and sounds like it to me. I thought the bible mentions something about an eye for an eye. He keeps on saying none of his excuses have anything to do with the crimes but he keeps speiling them off. One person maybe parole one day under certain circumstances, multible no!!! So I don,t think he even deserves being listened to I am gone.

"Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and i will give you rest.take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I'am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and My burden is light." JESUS CHRIST. And this you ARE DOING ! Keep running your race!! GOD BLESS YOU.
