    Thank you, soooo much! My cruise control stopped working during the middle of a road trip, and after watching your video, I noticed my lights were always on. Upon inspection, the little black plastic bumper piece under my brake pedal had broken, causing excess space between the brake pedal and the switch.

    Last night I got pulled over for having no brake lights. Thinking it odd that all three bulbs would burn out at once, I decided to check the switch, and this video emboldened me to do the repair job myself. Thanks Jim the Car Guy! Of course, the money I saved by doing it myself will go to my chiropractor instead of my mechanic, but that's okay... (j/k)

    I have a 2007 Elantra and this switch failed about five years ago. The shifter would not shift out of Park. It was fixed for free because there was a recall. Now the car is ten years old and the part failed again, this time the brake lights won't turn off. It seems this part tends to fail every five years. Thank you for this video, I'm glad I can do it myself!

    I did notice shortly into a driving trip that my traction control indicator light came on and my acceleration and gear shifting (automatic) became abnormal. Car hesitated and needed intermitent pushes on gas pedal and higher rpms to get going. Thanks for the video. I wasnt sure if the shifting and traction control indicator were related to the brake switch going bad.

    Hi Jim. I had a similar issue on my 2007 Santa Fe. The stop switch was replaced once due to a recall. Recently my brake lights would not turn on and the ESC light would turn on as well on my dash. I purchased a new switch and installed it after watching your video. Upon installing the switch the rubber pad that depresses the switch on the pedal itself broke apart. Could that have caused the problem? The new switch was in without the pad in place and the brake lights stayed on. I tested the old switch with a multimeter for continuity numerous times and it seems fine. I purchased a rubber pad and switch from the autoparts store for $12.00. No problems as of yet.

  • @SallyBrandiAlyssaYoung1234

    Thank you for this video. It is still relevant. I do have a question: I have a 2010 elantra touring. Recently had the brake light switch problem. I am still having issues since the switch was 'fixed.' With your video, I was finally able to tell what I was looking at up there. and I have the same exact switch. However, there is a washer in there. a locking one, the ones with the split, if I don't have the name right. and when they first changed it, they had on 2 washers. I left the shop and couldn't even get a half mile before my brakes were almost completely locked up and smoking very badly. they took off one of the washers, left the locking washer there. Now on long drives about 40-50 miles, they will begin to lock up again, but not nearly as bad. I can just tell, cuz my rpms are up, and I should be going faster and it feels like the emergency brake is on type of feeling. The shop told me that sometimes with old worn parts that they put washers in. I can see the part that the end of the switch goes into is worn. The guy that originally did the 2 washers is no longer there, so we don't know if there was already a washer there when he changed it, or if he put in two. Could this be that locking washer?

    • @jimthecarguy
      @jimthecarguy  Před rokem

      Wow that sounds really bad. If the switch is causing the brakes to lock up you should have it looked at very soon. You maybe damaging the brakes. When the switch is installed it should not be touching anything on the brake pedal. There should be a very small space between the switch and the pedal. From what I recall there should not be a washer on the switch. Can you send me a photo of the switch when it is still in the car?

    I have a 2009 Hyundai Elantra and both of my brake lights are out (both went out at the same time). I bought a stop light switch and watched your video. It seems very easy. But when I went to replace it, I didn't have enough room on the floor of my car to maneuver. I'm not the biggest guy in the world (I'm about your size from the look of your video). But it is so cramped that it looks like I will have to remove part of the steering panel to be able to get to the switch. My question is..... did you remove part of the front steering panel before you started the video? Or were you small enough to crawl under the front panel and do the work without removing anything? And if I have to remove any paneling, which one(s) should I remove to get the easiest path to the brake light switch? Sorry for all the questions, but I ran out there ready to get it done and discovered I didn't have enough room to maneuver my body to get to the switch. Please help. Thanks!

      Max Trap I have to say a big thank you to you. Your comment helped me out tonight. I called Pep Boys and they wanted to charge me $78 for labor and I had to go to the dealer to buy the part ($16). I didn’t have time so I went to autozone. They told me to change the brake switch which I did then and there. That didn’t fix it. Then I checked the fuses and they were fine. They then told me it was an electrical issue. I was bummed out and decided to watch this video. I saw your comment and thought hey that might be it. I went back to autozone they didn’t have the bulb. So I went to Oreillys and they had it. I told them my story and the literally laughed at me and said there’s no way in hell its the bulb. I must have an electrical issue. I almost walked out believing them. But I said just sell me the bulb I’m already here. Well well well , IT WAS THE THIRD BRAKE BULB! I went back inside and laughed at them and told them they were wrong and said that I had read about replacing the bulb in a CZcams comment and that he knew more about fixing cars then they both did. Anyway man thanks a million! You saved me time and money.

    Shouldn’t you take battery out first before starting this

    Hello Jim,
    My friend has a 2007 Hyundai Sonata and the parking lights wont shut off. I just had to jump her yesterday. My searches all lead to a new fuse box for this model, but that's $$$! Any ideas?
    Thank you!
