    #Pokémon Red is a game incredibly close to my heart. It's the very first game I ever have a memory of receiving, and have memories of the countless hours I spent playing it, restarting with new teams each time. Kanto is a region I know almost like the back of my hand, and #GameFreak has given me years of not just joy with virtual companions, but so much creative inspiration in the way of game design, as well as art style.
    That being said, despite the first generation of Pokémon being a technical marvel to be able to run on Nintendo's flagship handheld, its coding is held together by staples and duct tape. Most of the enjoyment I get from replaying the game nowadays is by absolutely destroying it by abusing its easy-to-perform glitches.

    The Elite Four's weird choices always confused me, too... until a few months ago, when I read the reason for it. Apparently, the gimmick for the Gen 1 Elite Four - at least originally - was that they don't specialize in just one type like the Gym Leaders do. Instead, they specialize in *2.*
    Lorelei is a Water/Ice trainer, which is why she has a Slowbro.
    Bruno is a Fighting/Rock trainer, hence the 2 Onix.
    Agatha, as you posited, is indeed a Ghost/Poison trainer, which is why Golbat and Arbok are on her team.
    Lastly, Lance is a Dragon/Flying trainer. That's why he has a Gyarados and an Aerodactyl.
    To a lesser extent, the secondary types were chosen to specifically complement the primary ones. Agatha has a spooky bat and a big snake with a scary monster face that can literally Paralyze its opponents with fear to support her Ghosts, and Lance has a Chinese dragon and a prehistoric wyvern in addition to his Dragon types. Aesthetically, they make sense.

      @@pokuhmoo9415 I guess they deemed it too complex, or maybe the guy that came up with the idea only worked on the first games. This is something they axed before the game launched, like how they decided against making Bird a type and replaced it with Flying. Plus, by Gen 2, there were probably enough Pokemon that they didn't need to fill the gaps in certain types anymore.
      I mean, it didn't stop them from giving Morty all 3 of the Gastly line and not a single Misdreavus, or from giving Karen a Gengar and a Vileplume instead of a Sneasel and a Tyranitar, but nobody's perfect.

    You also forgot that the special stats were just one stat in gen 1 making it so all psychic types have huge special attack stats and special defence stats, critical hits were based on speed making it so pokémon like jolteon and electrode get high crit rates, focus energy lowered your crit chance instead of raising it, hyper beam having it's recharge being nullified if it knocks out the opponent, and freeze being instakill if your opponent doesn't hit you with a fire move. I know that these are all done in good faith and for fun but something I want to point out that many people forget or don't realize is gen 1 was kinda built as a child's power fantasy more so than a compelling narrative so things like villains announcing their evil or other logical inconsistencies or oddities can be explained by the original intent.
    This is why the child is hyper competent but adults are dumb or irresponsible
    It's still fun to do these of course and even what I put here is partially conjecture and heresay

      Maybe the Gameboy version is the fantasy, the GBA remakes are real life in the pre-3DS timeline, and the Let’s Go remakes are real life in the post 3DS timeline.

    If and when you continue on to the next gens, will you cover multiple pairs of games starting from Gen 3? Like FireRed and LeafGreen? I know they're remakes, so like 95% of their sins would just be sins you mentioned before, but they have new stuff as well, so it might be worth mentioning.

    4:00 remember how in the earlier generations the "pokemon world" was just THE world. Like, in fire red and leaf green they reference the apollo program and how Mew was found in the jungles of south america

  • @awsmrs
    @awsmrs Před 2 lety +5

    5:57 Actually that's a common misconception in the Pokémon games. Ash is "ten" years old, but canonically in the games you're older than that. In Gen I Red is canonically 11 years old (according to the Bulbapedia) but I see where the confusion comes from.
    TL;DR The anime is not connected with the games and information from it should not be justified for lore in the games.

    16:27 I tought the sin was going to be:
    A- That the guard could somehow share the tea with all other guards in that amount of time or-
    B- That there was enough tea for all those thirsty guards in the first place.

    • @agitpolat1061
      @agitpolat1061 Před 2 lety +2

      In this Version you actually don't give them Tea, instead you give any one of the three Vendor Machine Drinks. Atleast sharing like, a Bottle of Water is sliiiiiiightly more believable.
      They changed it in the GBA Versions because you still have to buy those Drinks, so it was possible (if extremely unlikely to do unintentionally) to get soft-locked if you ran out of Money.

    Because Yellow was a retroactive game-ification of the anime. It's why Pikachu is your starter, why you get to have all three starters, and why Brock, Misty, Red, and Blue all have new trainer sprites.

    One thing I noticed watching the Elite 4 section and surprised you didn't point out was the first 3 have mostly Pokemon that were already represented by gyms. Lorelei has mostly water type, Agatha has all poison types, and Bruno has 2 Onixes who are rock/ground. At least Lance is basically flying and dragon.

    as much as I absolutely adore the rest of this video and the ongoing ‘I’m not supposed to be able to do this’ thing which sums up gen 1 perfectly in as few words as possible, I just can’t get over the fact that you included enbies in your sin about the gyarados on lance’s team, ‘guys, gals and non binary pals’. as an enby myself, my respect for you and your channel has just skyrocketed, I never see non binary inclusion or acknowledgment anywhere outside of specific lgbtq+ spaces, and I can not thank you enough
