- Cycling Road is supposed to be one of Pokemon's easiest routes. What happens when we make it almost unplayable?

Also now I want someone to make a pokemon fangame where Christian kidnaps the player and transports them into different pokemon generations for different softlocks based on what difficulty (based on time it'd take to clear) and all you get for completing every trap in every difficulty, is a sprite of a teddiursa in a nightcap
I love how this escape isn’t even about insane luck, or tantalizing you with a shiny you can’t get, or making you waste hours, days, weeks, or even months to leave. It’s just a really annoying means of hiking it allllll the way to a Pokémon center. This one’s a funny one. I love it.

@Ylurple does pokemon gen 1 actually require the b button? You could beat the entire game without ever needing to press the b button. You can navigate all the necessary menus without it. You can even save.

Why
If you completely forgot about the "hold B to stay still" mechanic like I did, then this gets even more painful, since the alternative is timing your start presses to happen on the third step (and losing significantly more time if you fail this).
I thought I knew I the game quite well down to the Assembly code level and yet I did not even know about this fact until today.
To be fair it is hardly a requirement to spend any time on that map that it is very easy to miss that feature entirely.
You can just push the character against tha walls, it works just like using the B button and is even easier
I NEVER knew you could do that. Was it mentioned in the instruction booklet (my copy of blue was a hand-me-down so i didnt have it) or is this just something everybody else figured out except for me?
I learned it just messing around, since I really like cycling theme and sometimes I just climbed the road just to let my character auto move down the road, it was fun
I like the idea of Ash/Red riding down Cycling Road trying to save his poisoned Pokémon, only to get magically teleported to Cinnabar Island and crash into the ocean, as if he was riding the DeLorean from Back to the Future.

i really love this one. i always enjoy imagining what these videos would look like in-universe but this one feels especially vivid. the mental image of trying to precariously transport a bunch of extremely fragile eggs down a very steep hill is incredible. the exeggutor, slumped in the basket of the bike in a delirious near-death stupor, the slightest bump in the road sending them careening to the ground. the failure condition is compelling too, the player character being in such a determined state of mind that if their eggs get too hurt they'll run all the way to a hospital that's physically impossible to return from. to be so destructively selfless... contemplating their life decisions, sat at the coast of cinnibar island, their recovering exeggutor hobbles over to telepathically tell them "hey, at least you've still got me.".
The torture isn't even about going to cycling road. It's about how strained your finger will get from having to be in that position constantly for almost a hour.
I think the biggest thing that makes this one special is that it is actually theoretically worth it to go through the tedium of picking the lock. With most of the other setups, just restarting the save file is going to be the most efficient method, but with this one the player is actually encouraged to go through with the evil plan
If you speedrun the game you can more or less reach Celadon in the 45 minutes it takes to get to this point, especially if using Pokemon Stadium's 3x fast forward feature, so not really.
But with no money, no other Pokémon, no items, what's the point? AFAIK there isn't even a renewable source of money in Gen I (besides maybe the Pokémon League?) so it just seems like you're left penniless with no creatures or items of value.
I was struggling with this too but I guess if you left Mr Psychic's TM unclaimed then you could go collect that and smash the E4 with lvl 100 Psychic.
@@WatchVidsMakeLists You still got the HMs in the storage since you cantt throw those away. and it should be possible to defeat some of the trainers we didn't beat once we escape the poison lock. Then buy some pokeballs and you're in a pretty good spot to pretend the lock never happened.
@@Tetsamaru Only possible if the eevee in Celadon City or the psychic TM have been left unclaimed, or if the HM for Strength was obtained. The only HM move Exeggutor can learn in gen 1 is Strength, and it's possible to get to Cinnabar island and unlock the gym without access to strength by surfing from Pallet town. If you neglected to get the gold teeth while you were getting the HM for surf, then you won't be able to get strength after escaping the softlock because you have no money to enter the safari zone with, and the player is left with a pokemon they literally can't win any battles with since any explosive ties count as a loss.
forget saving next to Snorlax. imagine being at the top of Cycling Road where the map starts forcing your character down, saving there, and *then* giving it to a rando to escape. they open the save file and are basically instantly greeted with "Exeggutor fainted!" and being transported to Cinnabar before they even have a chance to understand what's going on. 😂
To add onto that: when the player finally realizes what's going on the first thing they'll do is attempt to go to Celadon, only to be met with Snorlax, causing them to waste even more time! It's diabolical!

@@ich3730even if they already know the lock, i still think it would be fun see the attempts, especially the RNG-dependent ones like the Gyarados in the Fortree Gym. and if Pikasprey comes up with new ones, he can have the attempts be filmed before he uploads the actual Softlock Picking episode.

Easy solution is to have a softlock situation where it hasn’t been shown in a video yet.
It may not be the longest you've done, but the sheer tedium of having to save and reload so many times with so much precision would drive me insane. Reminds me of those toys where you have to move a metal loop along a path without touching it. Just sheer frustration. Love it.

the idea of “formal” vs “casual” Asprey is hilarious to me, like he wears a blue t-shirt for his playthroughs and then a bright yellow suit for his softlocks and reviews

It's kinda telling that this is still probably the most forgiving Hell Save File, as I'm gonna call them.
I was in the camp of calling them Pokemon Saw Traps
Just as fitting.
The flaw with a lot of the others is that it's faster to start a new game. This one, it's faster to put yourself through this torture to rescue the save file.

For added comedy value, it could also know Rest, which would heal the poison but only in a battle that you're the going to automatically lose.
Not necessarily, there is grass along the road. You could use rest to cure the poison and then run from the encounter!

There's actually even more to this than you pointed out. After reaching Fuchsia and healing, you are still stuck with a useless Exeggutor, no money and no items. *Depending on how thorough you were getting to this point,* actually getting the save back on track can still be incredibly tedious or just straight up impossible anyway. Imagine how cruel that'd be.
"Congratulations, you made it! ... ... now what?"
I was thinking this as well. In one of the Gen1 games, the Safari Zone guard will eventually let you in with no money and only a single ball. However, I'm pretty sure that's in Yellow, which is probably why Asprey chose to do this in Red/Blue.
Another possible option is the Game Corner, as long as losing/spending all coins wasn't part of the setup (it's incredibly tedious to get down to 0 coins, but this is a Pikasprey Yellow softlock video after all). You'd have to win enough coins (since you can't buy any!) to either get a Pokemon or a TM that Exeggutor can learn.
EDIT: Oh wait, Exeggutor can learn Strength. Although, it is possible to skip the gold teeth and thus not be able to re-enter the Safari Zone to go get it.
Right? I was thinking exactly this the whole time. Even if you made it to Fuchsia, all you're left with is nothing but wasted time to show for your effort.
I guess it would depend on how much of a jerk the person setting this up was being. If they were going for tedious, they could just not sell EVERYTHING and leave an assortment of usable items in the PC, which would make it DOABLE, but not pointless. Anything outside of that would just be unnecessarily barbaric, and you'd be better off just deleting the save and starting over anew all over again.
You can get the Psychic TM from Mr Psychic, which solves your money problems after you've murdered a few cyclists with lvl 100 Psychic Exeggcutor
You can go get the coin case and pick up free coins to gamble for a usable mon

In a world of multiple content creators trying to optimize pokemon to be beaten under incredibly difficult and obtuse conditions, just be an asprey and embrace screwing up as bad as possible.

these videos bring me so much joy. people can say “but this would never happen in normal play, so why does it matter?” all they like. the point is that it can happen at all. i find the construction of these setups to be intensely and endlessly fascinating. they’re such an earnest way to express love for games that came out decades ago.
to me its boring because its same as being softlocked anywhere else its just a different location like its just going way out of your way to soft lock yourself, nobody in their right mind would deposit and sell all items etc and if they do then they deserve to get their save file ruined because these feel like: if you opened a huge safe walked inside it and someone lock the door behind you like DUH obviously if you purposefully make it impossible then that is what gonna happen
@@norbyn6537 It's not about practicality. It's about testing the limits of the game in a highly specific way that not a lot of people are interested in personally doing. Suit yourself though.

Honestly I wonder how going back to the nearest Pokemon center upon wiping out works in-universe, like is Red just so panicked when it happens that he just swims all the way back to Cinnabar Island without needing a Pokemon to surf?
Wasn't there some text in Gen3 like "you ran back to the safety of the nearest Pokemon center" or something. But they changed the mechanic so you warp back to the last town you were in not the last center you actually healed at, so that sorta makes more sense.
Pokemon have always been able to surf while fainted, so there not really an issue. My head cannon is like they the Pokemon get beaten up and can't be bothered to fight any more, but they're still like conscious and can do easy stuff.

I just realized that trading the exeggutor out for another pokemon is still an option, since it wasn't until gen 3 if I recall where you had to have at least 2 pokemon to trade. This is relevant mostly because after you escape the softlock, you're still left with a ruined save file and a useless pokemon that can't win any battles. Every other potential fix for that problem I can think of is something the person setting this up could sabotage by picking up valuable items, TMs the exeggutor can use, getting rid of the hidden coins in the game corner and the gift eevee, and making sure to avoid getting the gold teeth or the HM for strength. Trading with another game (or, if doing this in version Yellow, getting into the safari zone for free) is pretty much the only way out that can't be rendered impossible in 1st gen.
@@chaosvoltmost of these videos are based on the player not having another game to interact with. If you had another game to trade from you could just faint and trade or use stadium to get a Pokémon that can either surf or fly to end it without even trying cycling road
@@th3bear01 Fair, yeah. If trading was permitted as an escape method then the most efficient method would be to take the death and trade for something that can learn surf once you're at Cinnabar island, skipping the cycling road gauntlet entirely.

This one was legitimately difficult for me to connect the dots on until you explained them. I have no idea how you just... come up with this maniacal malarkey on your own.
It's called experience
You have to start from the different things you're trying to achieve.
For exemple the cinnabar softlock is a known one so you can add it to your toolbox as a fail condition for losing a battle or dying to poison. Starting from there you know you can create a stiuation where if the player fails to through a process you setup you can softlock them.
If you also know about the way the poison works in the game (having to abuse that poison thing can actually be useful in a nuzlocke) you can easily think about that for the hurdle the player has to go through.
And then you can iterate from there, trying to figure out what the longest distance you can force someone to travel poisoned is. (another funny place to use could be the dark cave, cause having to save and load all the time would make it disorienting and you could even make the pokemon low level to make sure it can't escape from random encounters making the whole ordeal even worse)
Having those starting point make it a lot easier to connect the dots.
I can't tell with certainty that it's his process but that's the kind of approach that works to create puzzles, thinking about different tools you have access to and simplifying the core problem to it's essential components and then slowly adding complexity and fluff. It doesn't come out fully formed. Knowledge of tools available and iterating on ideas is key.

This has really got me thinking along these lines for gen 2 set up but with the solution involving an enemy trainer with the move Present. Say you save the game with one low HP poisoned pokemon nearby an enemy trainer with Present. You have to let the Delibird (or whatever) Present you back up to full HP while you splash or lob pokeballs to waste turns, then win the battle and still walk just far enough to a pokemon center with the higher HP you've been granted

Hell I'll raise you one more: Depositing all but a fainted Pokemon is possible in this game. The game only checks if your whole team is fainted at the same time it applies poison damage. So you could save every three steps all the way up Cycling Road if you wanted to do it that way.
Oh, and as amusing as it was to use the invisible PC, you don't really need to. In RBY your Teleport location is only set when you heal with the nurse.

There's a full restore and a rare candy on cycling road that you could pick up to shorten your time, assuming your RNG was good enough to grab the rare candy it would give you ~20 more steps without needing to save and reload. The full restore is about a third of the way down the map, once you grab that you can just take a straight shot to fuchsia city without stopping, as long as you don't hit any trainers..

I love this. This is truly a Saw trap for a 12 year old in the year 1998. I don't know why this is the specific niche of genius that has been bestowed upon you but I'm glad it is.

I wonder if you can do this in the Unknown Dungeon. A poisoned, 1hp pokemon with only Surf and no PP. You'd have to walk from the Mewtwo encounter all the way back to the entrance, then to the Pokecenter, without getting into encounters or dying to poison damage. You'd literally have to save every step, or risk an encounter by moving more than once.
Bonus points if it's a low-level Pokemon.
That wouldn't actually work since if your Pokémon knows Surf, you can escape from Cinnabar Island or Indigo Plateau without issue.
