Just a fantastic review of both bikes! Thank you. I have the 2023 S-Works Epic Evo and love it. Also I couldn't agree with you more on the steer stops we need them !!
Awesome video and a great comparison, I bought a BC40 last year, and I love it.
Love the comparisons, great video. Please do a comparisons video on Epic Evo and Mach 4SL. I own the EE and love it!!! Waiting for the new version but at the same time looking at the Mach 4SL. Thank You!!!!
We’ll have more Mach 4 content soon. I have a build Trey did coming up next and then we’ll have some reviews soon
Let’s go I can’t wait to see this new video!
I just purchased both bikes because without test riding, I couldn’t decide. I get the Evo next week and the BC40, who knows when. Planning to make the Evo a trail ripper and the BC40 a race bike. Cheers! 🤙🏼
Makes sense to me. I’ve seen people put pikes on evos
@@bicyclestationput a 34 130 trail on my bc40 with riser bars and 4 pot xtr brakes.. It's like a light duty trail bike..Thing rips..
So I grabbed a base model closeout for 2399. My other bike is a new BMC Fourstroke 01. For the 2500 I couldn’t turn it down and think it will be nice having a second slightly diff extra bike. Do you think I can install a dual lockout on the base model? I use it all the time on the Fourstroke 01. Does the stock fork and shock have a 2 or 3 position remote possibility??
You're riding Medium for both...in that case, what's your height?
Do you think weight would also play into whether you went for a large over medium ever?
I have a deal through a health scheme in the UK whereby i can get 25% off of a Specialised...it seems as if the Epic Evo or the Stumpjumper Alloy may well be the options for me...although, i would like a hardtail for all season riding here in the UK in all honesty, although, the Hardtails available via the scheme don't apear to be all that great, a standard Chisel being about the best on offer.
Specialised report that as a 5'11 reasonably heavyset guy, i'd be best going for an S4 which, in Epic Evo terms i think would land on a large...what's your thoughts on that...do they tend to size you up in their automated assessment utility or is it pretty accurate?
Thanks for any feedback you may have.
do you run your BC40 with 160 rotor or 180 mm on the rear thanks great video. I just bought a BC40 for myself and last year I bought a BC40 for my wife's 40th she loved it so so much I bought it for myself. thanks your video help me confirm buying it
New sub to your channel for about a week now.
Anyway, great video! I would choose the BC40 definitely. I don't at all like the kinked top tube. Straighten that B out Allied
Again great video
I hated it at first also but then it became kinda useful. I was able to get a custom bag made that perfectly fits in the front triangle under the kink haha
Completely agree on the steerer stoppers.
I’m hopeful specialized used the WC steer stop in all their new models. It works really well
Which Specialized did on 2024 models. Yay!@@bicyclestation I just don't get why Allied doesn't include Remote Lockouts.
I’m also curious how the bc40 compares in 100/100 to the Supercaliber in terms of race speed. Always a debate for me on race speed vs descending capability for everything outside the race tape.
Compared to the gen 1 supercaliber the bc40s geometry is much better and I’d say the bc40 100/100 is far superior to the gen 1 supercaliber. The gen 2 supercaliber basically has the same geometry as the 100/100 bc40 and I’d argue it’s a decision between if you want the stiffer more efficient suspension and heavier weight of supercaliber gen 2 or the lighter more forgiving suspension of the 100/100 bc40
Man thanks for the video! Would love your take on cross country tires.
I have tons of opinions haha
I will definitely be making tire content in the future. But feel free to dm me on instagram if you just have a general question. I’ve tried pretty much everything on the market
Just stumbled upon your channel, being new to mountain bikes here in Indiana. What do you recommend as far as travel size for the trails here. You think the new stump jumper that just came
Out is over kill, or go with an epic. I’m not racing and not really big on huge jumps just want a bike that will kinda do it all
I highly recommend the new epic 8 or the new chisel full suspension.
Both can be bought at any budget and will be perfect for any trails we have / also travel well into more mountainous regions. The BC40 is an enthusiast level purchase. If you’re wanting to jump into a higher end bike off the bat I highly recommend it. Send me an email at jesse@thebicyclestation.com if you have more questions about your purchase decision.
Any advice to make to the base evo model more pedal friendly without spending $1500 on new suspension? It's a great bike but I definitely miss the power transfer and efficiency during xco and xcc races. The 3-pos remote setup sounds ideal but ugh it's spendy.
It’s definitely ideal to just invest in the suspension but possibly volume spacers? The issue with that is you compromise in the rougher stuff by stifling the suspension
Next time you get the suspension rebuilt, have a heavy compression shim stack installed in both the shock and fork.
I always felt scared on my epic evo but then I switched to a pivot mach 4 and have never been so confident!
Wait to you hear my new idea
what's the new idea????@@bicyclestation
Do you use the Epic with torque caps? I find it quite annoying on my bike, i know you can change them to regular caps.
I use them on every bike. What’s annoying about them? Roval wheels would have shipped with the normal ones if you prefer them
@@bicyclestation I find it hard to slide the wheel into the fork, they catch on the fork leg. Maybe because they are brand new? I have regular caps, maybe i will change them.
I think it’s harder with the regular one because then you have to line the axel hole up perfectly before you can put it in.
LONG LIVE THE GRIP SHIFT!!!!
Funny seeing something that was pushed aside years ago by “rapid fire” shifters still having a place today lol
I kinda miss it now that my new bikes all electric lol
Jesse - What would you recommend for someone looking for an Epic/Epic evo - Try to get a epic evo frameset now with the discounts, or hold off another month or so (or whatever it is) until spesh announces the new Epic/Epics? Dont know what info you have, or if you can even disclose anything. But I am in a dilemma where I dont know what to do :D
I don’t think the evo has been in stock for a few months at this point.
I don’t actually know anything other then specialized has a three year product cycle and all of the epic are on deep discounts or have been sold out for a long time. I’d probably wait
@@bicyclestation Hmm, I wonder if the EU stock is different. My dealer could order the evo frameset in most sizes still.
I heard through the grapevine that reviewers, journalists etc were on a spesh trip just a few weeks ago, and I believe the embargo is lifted in march. So we should see some info soon.
And also, as an added bonus - Should be seeing some new sram brakes any week now (possibly the downhill prototype everyone in the world cup were on this last season)
Lots of cool stuff coming really soon I think
hi I have a 23 sworks evo ..do you think will be possible install a flight attendant kit on?
Easily
Shoot us an email at jesse@thebicyclestation.com if you want us to get that rollin for you
@@bicyclestation on sram website they write if you put FA on a bike they haven’t test you have not warranty. For specialized they tested only epic 8
They specifically sell 21-23 epic evo suspension on the b2b. Wouldn’t be an issue at all
Where would the Trek Supercaliber (Gen 2) rank for an XC race bike?
I think it’s a good bike. I’m going to definitely make more content about it in the near future. But ranking wise I’d much rather have either the evo or bc40 over the supercaliber
Where does the Pivot SL4 stack into the mix?@@bicyclestation
Was there a Marji race recap video? Interesting to see what assumptions were made on the build video worked out and what, if anything, didn't
yea that video kinda fell threw the cranks. I filmed most if it and then it was a few months after the race and I was worried it wasn't relavant anymore. Do you still want me to finish it? Honestly I wouldn't change the set up at all
@@bicyclestation yeah, finish it. The cult like following of that race will keep it relevant.
@@bicyclestation def finish the video. That's such a brutal ride/race. Would love to see a video on it
@@bicyclestation yes!
Allied is Mde in the USA, just that is worth the few dollars, and it is few dollars, difference in price.
canyou tell me how tall are you, because a have the same problem as you short legs, and i cant decide the size of the bike. saludos desde sinaloa mexico
5 11
I love my scott spark rc pro 120/120 mm. Such a capable bike. All i need is decent wheels and it's going to turn in to a rocket
Check out our XC wheel review video if you need some advice on that decision
I put Elite Pro 36's on mine with their own brand hubs. Very pleased and 1500gms.
What brand are they?
Elite is the brand. Quite a few people on You Tube have reviewed them and some have a code for a discount. I weighed my Silverton 1.5s that the bike came with and they are around 1800gms so not bad for aluminium alloy and I have kept them as spares. I have put Maxis Forecaster tyres (new version) on both new wheels and am impressed with them for all round use.@@bicyclestation
I'm good with 100 in the back but I gotta have 120 in the front.
Never tried it like that. Could be interesting
Ack! Please don't eulogize the Epic Evo! I just bought mine this year and I don't plan on replacing it for a long time.
You don’t have to haha. That doesn’t mean it’s not at the end of its product cycle
Is the chainline for the Epic evo 52 or 55?
I run it at 52. But you can run a wide crank with a -3 chainring to make it close to 55. There’s not really a great solution right now for the dub wide crank
@@bicyclestation ok, so a rotor inpower crankset with 52 chainline should fit on it?
100%
@@bicyclestation thanks for the fast answer and kudos for all These nice Videos! Like it a lot!
Appreciate it!
I was in debate between BC40 and the Hei Hei CRDL. I ended up going Hei Hei and I am running all Manitou Suspension. That was key. The Rock Shock and Fox Suspension were just awful. I put on Mara Inline in rear and snap the small bump and pedaling efficiency was the best I have ever felt. As for Shock R7 Pro set up on 120. I think the Hei Hei would give both of these a run in my set up. Nice Review.
Not having ridden it the geometry seems slightly outdated in comparison to the bc40. Unsure how both Fox and rockshox were terrible on the bike. That kinda sounds like an issue with the bike? What was the issue with the shocks?
hi, what stem, length and degree do you have on Epic Evo? Thanks
90 -17 slammed
Jesse - how tall are you? Do you know your inseam?
Im 5 11 with a 31 inseam measured from the ground
Great tip re: the bottle shift for the Evo, I went through the 5 stages of grief thinking 2 full size bottles were off the table on a medium frame.
I think it's important for people to consider the Evo base a "third" bike for comparison. In this form, it is decidedly not a race bike. My opinion is that the platform is on the border between race bike and trail bike, and only when you dress it up in premium garb can it truly race capably.
That said, the base Evo is a lot of fun even if it has a few unpolished quirks. To that end, I guess you could argue that Specialized marketed accurately.
Exactly. I truly believe that specialized didn’t intend to make the evo the better race bike. But the cats kinda out the bag now.
You need silca cages and it fits no problem! You can pause this video where I talk about Pisgah 111k to see a picture of the bike with two bottles. Or got to my instagram
Specialized fucks you if you get the one down from the top. Frame is much heavier. I don’t know the build kit now but I had to get mechanical xtr. Not XO axis. Not a very snappy bike. Sold it. It would have won my heart if it had axis xo and sworks frame.
Yea that’s the biggest issue. You have to buy the sworks. And then also buy completely new suspension to make it what it should be. But if you do it’s amazing
Sounds like when you buy a Jeep Wrangler. 😂😂
Pretty much
Why does reducing the shock stroke make the bike faster?
Steeper geometry
@@bicyclestation if that was the case, we would all be riding 2014 Epics with 70 degree head angles. Your response doesn’t make any sense. Bikes would not be getting slacker if steeper bikes were faster.
Shortening the travel steepens the bike to 67 degrees. It’s not like it’s changing it dramatically. It steers and accelerates quicker due to the steeper head angle and shorter wheelbase.
@@bicyclestation did you even read my comment? Your response is not logical. Steepening up a bike does not make it faster. If it did so XC Bikes would not be getting slacker over time. Changing a bike from 120 to 100 does not make it faster. If you think it does, why did Orbea get rid of their 100 millimeter travel OIZ? Maybe don’t make silly comments next time if you don’t know what you’re talking about.
I can use your logic to. Why don’t all XC bike use 64 degree head angles. Wouldn’t slacker always be faster?
im 6 feet tall
"It's been raining 4 days nonstop".. still proceeds to ride the slop 🤦♂️
Pisgah is known for wet riding. We asked two shops what they thought and both said go for it. Sold me that yellow rain jacket
