    I never cared much for covers. It always seemed to me a lazy way of trying to capture some fame rather than writing your own stuff or doing an original from a hungry songwriter. But it's hard to take umbrage with this one. Great singing, playing, and I like his phrasing. It does the original full justice.

    My late mom heard this on the radio and loved it! She always felt like the Statler Brothers version was a bit too "chipper" for someone who's slowly losing their mind. She said that, with the drums and Eric's deeper darker voice, the song becomes more dangerous-sounding, like he's about to crack and start killing people a la "Falling Down". (If you haven't seen that movie, watch it. It's good)

    • @wendyfrench8042
      @wendyfrench8042 Před rokem +3

      I love the original but it hit me that it is more chipper, or at least in the early versions of it. My mom played this type of music when I was a kid (born in 70) so even though it wasn’t “new”, it felt new to me. I miss this type of song.

      dangerous? killing people? dude's just depressed, the "chipper" tone is just him trying to mask it, after all why would he keep saying he's fine and having "lots of fun" if he sounded depressed and edgy ?^the happy and quirky melody also contrasts well with the lyrics and gives very particular anxiety notes that are missing on this cover. Dude on this one sounds like he already gave up and is being ironic about it ; While on the original he sounds like he's tryna super hard to convince not just his friends but mostly himself he's fine

    Written by Lew Dewitt. It was first performed by The Statler Brothers, and was released as their debut single in September of 1965. The song became popularity in January of 1966, spending four weeks at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, and No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In 1966, the song won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary (R&R) Performance - Group (Vocal or Instrument). In 1967, Nancy Sinatra covered the song for her album "Boots" (1967). In 1975, The Statler Brothers rerecorded the song for their first Greatest Hits album; "The Best of the Statler Brothers". The song was featured as the soundtrack to the 1994 film "Pulp Fiction". In 2000, Eric Heatherly covered the song for his debut album "Swimming in Champagne" (2000), also his debut single. Heatherly's rendition reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, and No. 50 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The rendition was made into the song's music video, which was directed by Gerry Wenner.🙂

    You have to say what you feel when you feel it, especially if you are an artist of any kind (as your name infers). Don't worry too much about what other people think. What you think is important. While I was a mere baby when this came out, my much, much older brother played the original over and over again when he broke up with his girlfriend. It is etched into my brain. The originals always tend to be the ones that stick in our heads, but I enjoyed Eric’s version. He has a nice voice.
