    It's a rebuild, some people won't accept being patient and taking the good with the bad, we tried the "fast" and "easy" route, going for José and Conte, that didn't work out. Now we are doing the RIGHT thing, building a project, Ange is only in his first season he needs time.

      Totally agree, it's just the beginning (literally the first season), and just losing Kane which is Spurs best player of all time, left with no proper stiker, a lot of players who are just arrived and they're young, and disturbed by injuries. Ange truly deserve time to build since he is building an (exciting) system

      Pretty sure Spurs have been in a rebuild for seven years. Newcastle for 3 years and their team be it in terms of 'quality of players' throughout the squad or things off the field like training facility, finances etc, are all behind spurs by much more than 5 years. That was pretty much Spurs best squad, it was only half of Newcastle's best squad. No Tripps, no Botman, no Joelinton, etc. Murphy and Krafth in the back line. 'It's a rebuild' is not an argument that defends that loss, it was simply tactical superiority.

    So how do you feel about this first full season of football?
    Knowing that most American are familiar with playoffs/post season tournament, and I heard some of them said that there was no stakes without playoffs. But turns out you were emotionally drained by Spurs European nights is in jeopardy. So of course not just championship race that matter in this football.
    And one more thing, North London derby is a must watch along Luke!
    And once again. Welcome to football coach Luke

    • @lukessportsacademy
      @lukessportsacademy  Před měsícem

      I actually like both formats. The sudden-death format of American playoffs is electric. However, to say that there are no stakes in Football just shows our ignorance towards the sport.

    • @loganleroy8622
      @loganleroy8622 Před měsícem

      As an American that loves all kinds of sports, from Big Bash cricket in Australia to the NFL, both formats have stakes. You just have to understand where the stakes are.
      In the NFL (and American sports largely), the aim is to be able to win the championship on the final day of the season. It means that just because you're doing well at any point of the season it could be all for nothing by the end of the season. The point of the regular season is to first, make the playoffs, and then try to gain the highest seed within the playoffs. Now some say that means that the teams at the bottom of the table have nothing left to play for and that's mostly true, what they leave out though is that most teams are in the hunt to make the playoff during the final month of the season. That leaves very few teams beyond 4 or 5 out of 32 teams that lack something to play for.
      However, this scenario where teams at the bottom of the table get rewarded with better draft picks the following season, creates all kinds of drama where fans of a team still want their team to win but also don't mind it if their team loses in the short term. However, at the same time, the actual players and coaches on the team are desperately trying to win because they themselves want to be seen as a piece of the organization worth keeping for the following season. So there's all kinds of drama where teams fans are upset at the start of the season that their team keeps losing and then their team can't even lose to save the team by the end of the season.
      While this misses the fight to avoid relegation, that drama gets shifted into the middle of the table. All kinds of teams fluctuate in and out of the playoff race during the final three weeks. And at the top of the table, teams are desperately fighting to try to earn home field advantage. The teams at the middle of the table in the EPL are left with nothing to play for for the final 2-3 months of the season. There's still 6 weeks left in the EPL season and teams in 6th-14th right now are in no danger of being relegated or have any chance of qualifying for Europe as it stands.

      @@loganleroy8622 as disclaimer, I am an Indonesian and also a Chiefs fan (since 2018. That game against the Rams that made me fall in love to your football) And now I am following baseball because the great Ohtani show how to play.
      Ok to respond your comment, with my short time experience to watch American sports. I definitely agree to the majority of your takes. As the matter of facts, almost all the sports that exist on this earth are adopting the tournament model (with some little tweeks that kinda similar to your regular season). And only football (most of the leagues) is the only sports I know that uniquely adopting round robin (regular season only) model.
      I definitely love both of the models because this football also adopting tournament model for inter-league competitions (such as UCL) and international competitions
      But also both of the models are had its own flaws
      A. Pros/Cons for round robin model (with pro-rel)
      Pros
      - This model is rewarding the consistency and durability to become a champion
      - Not just championship race, there are multiple objectives for the contestants to be targeted and really matter till the last day of the season
      Cons
      - When the champion was already determined weeks before final match come, the excitement are quite reduced a lot
      - And you are right about the mid table contestants, that they were already safe from relegation and the top spots are out of reach. So seems like on paper, they had nothing to lose and gain
      B. Pros/Cons for tournament model (or American major leagues model without pro-rel)
      Pros
      - Indeed the tournament model are full of excitement and thrills for its elimination rounds. Because the dramatic aspect is the selling point of this model, where the underdogs had the opportunity to thrive.
      - Any minor mistakes could end your season, while in round robin model you can redeem your fatal blunders on the other matches and still become a champion. The all or nothing nature can not be degraded
      Cons
      - As you used to say, the records in the regular season means nothing/degraded when you were eliminated in the early stages of elimination rounds. Then there is my critic especially for American major League model. That you still can proceed to playoffs rounds with the win rate less than 50%. Then, this just my personal take. If you want to claim to be strongest you need to defeat all of your opponents. Like team A defeat team B and team B defeat team C. But, just because team A defeat team B doesn't mean team A is stronger/better than team C. Because team A need to defeat team C to prove that claim.
      - Lack of the pro-rel made the league less accountable. The major or fatal mismanagement in a team will not be punished, instead it was rewarded by higher draft picks. Seems contradictive for the top teams that you were punished by minor mistakes yet for the low spot teams you were rewarded for major mistakes. Another critics for the lack of pro-rel that teams are intentionally lose games. The controversy of Doug Pederson intentionally lose the final regular game to prevent Giants to proceed to the playoffs was the bad example for this model.
      And this just my closing for the American major Leagues model. We know you guys love capitalism. But in micro perspective, your major leagues model are quite socialist. But in macro perspective, the closed league model are definitely capitalist and very exclusive. So if you want your team to perform in the major league, you can't just join by climbing promotion ladder but instead your team need to pay hundreds millions or billions dollars of expansion fee

    • @loganleroy8622
      @loganleroy8622 Před měsícem +1

      @@ryanfebrianto8973 First off, that's awesome that you're a Chiefs fan, I grew up a KC fan since I was 4 years old. The critiques of the American system of professional sports aren't really that big of a problem when it comes to the NFL, however, they are a in the other professional leagues like the MLB, NHL, and NBA.
      In the MLB especially there are so many games (162) that it is obvious who is in playoff contention after the first two months of the season, when there's still 4 months left to go, and who is already way off of the pace. On top of that, there is no salary cap in the MLB which means teams are not required to spend any particular amount. The disparity in salaries between the teams is so vast that it eliminates the chance that a team is going to have success by the end of the season. Because the NFL only has 17 games in a regular season, it means that any one team can't pull too far ahead. On top of that, the difference in talent and skill level between the teams in the middle and at the top is so small in the NFL that it means those teams actually can win and it not be too surprising. In the MLB though, there are teams like the Royals and the A's that just languish at the bottom, and there is never any push for them to try to win for a change because in spite of only filling 15% of the stadium, they still turn a profit.
      That's where the system really falls apart. In addition to that, the draft doesn't really help NFL teams too much. It does help, but only so much. The entire roster is 53 players. An NBA roster though is only 15 people, so 1-2 people drafted can make a huge difference the following season, and another key difference is that in American Football, the player can only play either offense or defense, so they are still reliant on the rest of their teammates to help them perform. That's the entire reason the NBA has a lottery system for the #1 overall pick, because tanking does really reward teams that do it.
      The only thing that's different to the US system of playoffs compared to the European Cup format system is that the US playoff system is inherently unfair to the team with the worse record. It is an active reward for the performance in the regular season. There's no aggregate scoring like the UCL, it's not a random draw like the FA Cup or a semi-random group format like the World Cup. The thing that the European system allows is for teams to have multiple things to try for during the season. Each team is going to be involved in 3-4 different competitions and adds some action to the long season during the opening 50% when the league table is still way to early to tell who's going to finish where.
      I love and appreciate both systems, they each have extremely high drama, just at different times during the season, and for different reasons.

    Newcastle fan btw, we had a great match. We haven't been succesful because we're suffering the worst injury crisis of the century lol, for the match against Spurs we had to use a winger as rightback and a third choice CB as a leftback.
