  • Dive into the making of Mark Jenkin's singular, very British nightmare, featuring exclusive interviews with Jenkin and actress Mary Woodvine.
A wildlife volunteer on an uninhabited island off the British coast descends into a terrifying madness that challenges her grip on reality and pushes her into a living nightmare. Evoking the feeling of discovering a reel of never-before-seen celluloid unspooling in a haunted movie palace, this provocative and masterful vision of horror asserts Mark Jenkin as one of the U.K.’s most exciting and singular filmmakers.

Just watched it last night at my local theatre here in Honolulu, Hawaii and I loved it.
My initial reaction was one of confusion and intrigue.
I had a dream about it last night and had a few epiphany's as well.
To all who have not seen it yet, be patient with this film and keep an open mind.
It may seem to move slow at first but the more and more I think about it the more I realize how truly great a film it was.
I haven't been this tripped out since my first viewing of The Holy Mountain

I agree wholeheartedly. If a filmmaker is trying to invoke a specific era of cinema, they should use the methods available to get them there.

The film was super slow, and it only gives motifs. No coherence at all. Did you understand any of it?

@@ChannelZero1031 In some ghost stories, the protagonist realizes they were the ghost the whole time. In "Enys Men," the protagonist realizes she was the haunted house itself. She's tied, inexplicably, to the island's soul. To its memories of death, life, and culture. Just like the island itself, she's haunted by them.
When you live in isolated areas, with little social interaction, you can feel like you're melting into the wallpaper. Mark Jenkins took this abstract idea and presented it literally, collapsing time and logic to do so.
In regards to "coherence," I don't think the film is intended to have a linear plot. What does the protagonist know about the girl who jumped off the roof? Who are the miners and local women she keeps seeing? Why is she tasked with observing a flower, and who tasked her? I think all this is left deliberately vague for surrealist effect. To tie the viewer into the protagonist's confusion.
I feel like we limit movies with the idea that they're only function is to tell linear stories. Sometimes a film can exist to evoke a mood, impose questions, and present the surreal (more like paintings than conventional cinema). The film "Skinamarink" from last year works very similarly (sounds like that one might also not work for you).
These are the things I got out of the experience. For what it's worth.

@@hernandezmedia I come from a time where all i watched was David Lynch films. This stuff is elementary to me. I was simply thrown off by the ambiguity of the film and perhaps someone could help with the "Motif road map." This film is full of motifs that speak volumes. I am waiting for the first person to be able to break each one down. Nothing is accidental in film or "Just there". Too bad the director seems to be very coy about the translations. Part of me refuses to "Just take it for what it is." That's all i did with the David Lynch films and it ends up making me roll my eyes up to the sky. I did watch "Skinnamarink." Turns out the kid was in a coma of sorts or had a concussion, something like that, with some entity harassing him and his sister.
Ps. I did love the aesthetic in this one. He used a Bolex.

Feel Nick Roeg, Ken Russell and Derek Jarman 16mm; camera shots directly from Straw Dogs and some of the good Peter Cushing Hammer material. The leaden echo and the golden echo Margaret Tait 1950s, Luke Fowler under no enchantment, Polanski’s Repulsion etc etc. It’s massively referencing other films so it would be difficult to watch given how specifically genre targeted it is. The cover looks like the Fassbinder sci-fi TV project from the 70s.

You clearly have great taste! I watched this yesterday and can’t get it out of my head. I live about 30 mins away from the directors studio in Cornwall. I loved Bait his first film so had my fingers crossed and it surpassed my expectations. Felt like I’d been through an experience after this film. Really got under my skin. I have a little CZcams channel where I recommend small indies, foreign language and less heard of films in a top 5 list and Enys Men is gonna be a number 1 in an upcoming video for sure. Sorry for bombarding you but you are one of the first people I’ve found that actually said they loved it 👊🏻

Enys Men A Hypnotic Surreal Masterpiece
After leaving the Cinema I couldn't help feeling like I had wasted two hours of my life that I would never get back. I hated this film for many days, running it down to all my friends from the cast and crew I had worked with in the past. As a filmmaker myself who has never received a penny of funding I was bitter and angry and the expensive process made my blood boil. Weeks later I got over my own Ego and could not get the film out of my head as I replayed the scenes months after I had seen this film. The Kubrick Method attention to detail was so intense and as a fan of Andrei Tarkovsky I started to realise that Mark Jenkin is a very special individual and in a world of so much WOKE bullshit this was a Serious Director making what he wanted to see on the screen and if you don't like it then simply jog on. If you don't get it then that's just too bad. I now feel he is light years away from most modern filmmakers and on personal reflection I still see every scene in my head and he took me to another world where I had to look into my own soul. As a filmmaker myself from Cornwall I feel honoured to be in the same Era of Cinema as Mark and look forward to his next film.
Good luck Sir and well done to the Cast & Crew.

This is NOT a horror film. It’s not even a psychological thriller. It’s an experimental drama and mystery with occasionally surreal images and a slightly unsettling atmosphere. The marketing and trailer are completely misrepresenting this film. If you go into this expecting The Lighthouse or The Wicker Man, you’re going to be very disappointed.

    • @gabrielstraub

    Hey modern directors.
You have some good ideas, but one of them ISN'T an entirely hands off approach. Actors DO like to have some kind of direction. Audiences DO often like stories that are thought out. Projection and spontaneity is fun, but it should be the sprinkles, not the cake in general.
