- Bait director Mark Jenkin returns to the BFI Southbank to tell Mark Kermode about his second feature, an unsettling rural Cornish folk horror.
On an uninhabited island off the Cornish coast in 1973, a wildlife volunteer’s daily observations of a rare flower take a dark turn into the strange and metaphysical, forcing her to question what is real and what is nightmare. Is the landscape not only alive but sentient?
Enys Men is a mind-bending Cornish folk horror shot on grainy 16mm colour film stock and featuring his trademark post-synched sound.

That moment at 3:22 when Mark and Mary reach out to console Mark at the same time is beautiful. Lovely humanity, lovely filmmakers!
Watched this film 2 days ago and it really got under my skin. It’s a film to experience and feel. Beautiful colours, amazing sound design, haunting imagery, past present and future all collide in this absolute masterpiece. Out on blu ray in the UK now
I love that the 1970s BBC production of The Signalman was brought up. Love that film, and I am really looking forward to seeing Enys Men. Unfortunately it may not come to where I live, which is Florida. Are any of you fans of Ghost Box records? I feel like this stuff jives with Ghost Box's early aesthetics. There actually is a track called the Signalman by the Ghost Box label's The Advisory Circle. I highly recommend that album, as well as We Are All Pan's People, the Owl's Map, and From an Ancient Star. The Elektrik Karousel and Hey Let Loose Your Love are also some of my favorite Ghost Box releases.
Seen it twice now, and very different each time. Both totally immersive and unique experiences.
Bravura Mark, Mark, and Mary!
Mark Jenkin is the most underrated film maker alive right now.
It truly is a wonderful film and a fantastic achievement! It makes a lasting impression on your senses and it'll be a firm favourite of mine for many years to come.
Great movie, reminds me of the Pink8 manifesto films
does anyone have a link to the song discussed?
How come this movie isnt available anywhere in the USA???
Enys Men A Hypnotic Surreal Masterpiece
After leaving the Cinema I couldn't help feeling like I had wasted two hours of my life that I would never get back. I hated this film for many days, running it down to all my friends from the cast and crew I had worked with in the past. As a filmmaker myself who has never received a penny of funding I was bitter and angry and the expensive process made my blood boil. Weeks later I got over my own Ego and could not get the film out of my head as I replayed the scenes months after I had seen this film. The Kubrick Method attention to detail was so intense and as a fan of Andrei Tarkovsky I started to realise that Mark Jenkin is a very special individual and in a world of so much WOKE bullshit this was a Serious Director making what he wanted to see on the screen and if you don't like it then simply jog on. If you don't get it then that's just too bad. I now feel he is light years away from most modern filmmakers and on personal reflection I still see every scene in my head and he took me to another world where I had to look into my own soul. As a filmmaker myself from Cornwall I feel honoured to be in the same Era of Cinema as Mark and look forward to his next film.
Good luck Sir and well done to the Cast & Crew.
