Yeah but it's easy to happen people are literally at college to meet friends and join groups so yeah it almost happened to me. I had a lot of anger issues but grew up in the church and was all about questioning the bible but I actually study the book so I was frustrating them with their lessons so they stop inviting me to stuff. I told my friends later some of which had run into this group and they said it was a cult. When I returned home for winter break I told my parents and they too agreed it was a cult but I really was just looking for a friend or group of friends. Basically, they told me they couldn't be friends unless I joined the group and that is when I for myself knew it was not the place for me and that it was, in fact, a cult.

That’s crazy same here! The extreme charisma, the Bible studies actually being lessons leading to baptism w their church, insisting being baptized by them despite me already being baptized, the busy schedule, lots of ppl dropping their careers/post ed for their own Bible college program. And when I researched them?! The founder is deep in trouble, news articles and all. Yes I thank God for discernment too. Thankful I didn’t finish the lessons and stood my ground defending my church (I wanted to visit both my church and sometimes ICC but they insisted I couldn’t do that).

This is all so true. I was in college and I meet this women at a grocery store and out of no where she invited me to her home for a meal. What straving college person would reject, besides I had sized her up and thought if anything funny goes down I can take her! Well we made a stop, she had to pick up her child first, then we went to her house. She realized she needed something from the store and left me alone with her child ( where they do that at)!! Then she came back and prepared a mini feast and thats when it got all weird, because other folks started coming by. They were all smiles and seemed harmless but when they insisted we go to the "temple", that's when my spidey senses went off and as soon as we went outside, I dashed!! Thank God we were in a fairly populated area and I was able to disappear in a crowd quick! Her story is almost the same as mine as I grew up in the church and I dont find people threatening due to my belief that God is my protector. However, we must be wise and heed the warnings!! Be safe people.

    • @BornforGeekdom
      @BornforGeekdom Před 4 lety +20

@@caprisun4u545 It was a really conservative church called The Revolution. (the name should've been my first red flag) After I got out of it, I found a website explaining that it had been part of a movement that was actively broken up because of the damage it was doing to college kids. (GCM I think? But even that was a rebrand.) So much of what you talked about in your video were things I experienced. You had to have an adult mentor and it was required that you confess everything to them. They had so much control over who dated who and if they found out you were interested in or dating someone who wasn't "saved" they would shame and punish you. They staged a lot of interventions for so many different reasons. Looking back, I cannot fathom what kind of adults would be so intertwined in the lives of COLLEGE kids. I was diagnosed with PTSD after my experience and it took me years to get over it. There's a longer story there because I was one who committed the cardinal sin of dating outside the "saved". Oh, AND I saw Kill Bill by myself at the movies. Huge no-no. (Even though all the dudes being mentored by the pastor used to ironically watch all the Rambo movies together.) I guess I'm still bitter about a lot.

When I was fourteen I lost my father, and my mother was battling cancer, and my toxic aunt was being mentally abusive towards me. So I was battling depression and contemplating on suicide. One day after school this man approached me, and we began to have a conversation. He told me he was a “pastor”, so I felt like I could trust him because I was suffering with depression and coping with my dad’s death. So I told him what I was going through he takes out his bible and he started to read a verse to me. But I saw him twisting the words and adding words instead of reading the actual words that was on the Bible. That’s when I realized he was a cult leader, and I quickly got up and ran away from him as fast I could. Im so glad and I thank God for giving discernment to not join, because I was about to join. I’m so glad you made it out the cult tho. But please be safe.

Sometimes things like this (cults, etc) is the only chance someone may have to truly get to know God. Please know that a relationship with God does not feel like this. It’s full of love, acceptance, correction, and forgiveness. Almost like a friend or parent. And true Christians do not behave this way. We understand and are compassionate and we are no better than ANYONE. We all have struggles and flaws. She approached us about God and then invited us to bible study. When I asked when and where she said "Anytime you want, just call me (gave me her number) and WE WILL COME TO YOUR HOUSE!" No ma'am no ma'am! I kept it cool 6 minutes later I saw her talking to another woman and then I saw like 7 other people doing the same thing. As I left I saw all of them load up into a white van. Your experience was almost exactly like mine. The recruiters came on my college campus, and none of them went to my school. I was only 20 at the time (I'm 43 now) and they were really, really nice people. We had little bible studies on campus once a week. I got sucked in SO FAST that it makes my head spin! Promises of peace were fed to me, selling the organization like it was a fun and wonderful place with lots of young people like me, and members were super nice.
After a few weeks, I started going to the actual church meetings. Two middle aged men were "leading brothers" of the church, and sometimes "promising, young, godly men" preached also. But so many meetings: Tuesday prayer meeting, Wednesday bible study, Saturday morning pre-recorded sermon, Sunday worship, Sunday night potlucks. Also we had Thursday and Friday night hangouts several times a month. It was insane!
Once I got deeper inside the church, the signs of cult-ness came up, though I didn't understand what I was getting myself into: Separation started being preached right away.
Don't be friends with people who weren't in the church.
We were encouraged to only hang out with other members.
The only reason we should talk to non-religious people or folks from some other religion was with the aim of converting them to christianity.
No "worldly" music, we were only supposed to sing christian songs.
Lots of talk about sin, hell, eternal torture.
Coerced into preaching to strangers, family, co-workers whether we felt like it or not.
Elitist crap where you weren't a good christian unless you were in their church.
No dating at all. Just marriage; man picks a woman from the church, and marries her if the leaders of the church are cool with that. Wives were supposed to clean, cook, be baby-making machines, and in some families, homeschool the children.
The way I got out was due to a scandal with one of the leaders of the church. He beat his wife and did nasty things to his children. Once that got out in the open, people left that church by the hundreds, and that was my opportunity to escape. So I'm free now and I want absolutely nothing to do with religion or churches or temples or any sort of religious oriented places again.

She kept forcing me to sit down with her. I worked on campus, so she would visit my job and ask me when i had off. I honestly think she preyed on me, because she knew i worked full time, and attended school. To be honest, I think she thought she could scheme me, bc of the color of my skin. She was from (Japan/ or South Korea i think), but she never offered this “amazing opportunity” to ppl from her country, only me. Someone who she had nothing in common with. She would say, “Don’t you want to one day get a Lamborghini... don’t you want to stop working this job.” Like WTF. She would read me a script everyday. She would constantly guilt me into talking to her. I’m so pissed right now just thinking about it. I was one of the few kids who worked, and went to school. I was so broke. vulnerable, and one of the few ppl of color in my program. I knew it was bullshit, but I was to scared to tell her no. I finally acted as if I got fired from my job, and asked my coworkers to look out for her. She finally stopped coming by after a few months. I’m happy I’m older now and I know how to stand up for myself. But wow, I have so many stories about how ppl tried to take advantage of me. God was looking out.

I've had a few near misses with cults and religions, luckily I'm quite skeptical and like doing things my own way which means I'm haven't been sucked in but I've gone to a couple of events over the years that felt cultish and I followed my gut and left.

When I did get out, I was treated horribly by most of them and made an example of in their meetings. I was vindicated a bit when a while later, the leaders were exposed and a whole bunch of people left. Been 10 years and I'm still pissed... but I do have to say that experience taught me how to recognize narcissists and toxic people, and that has saved my behind *many* a time.

This story is so helpful for people to recognize what cults look like. Hopefully, its helped someone. Probably the reason that I didn't get recruited by a cult is because I don't like being around a lot of people. As soon as someone talks about meeting up with a group of strangers, I'm out. I can barely take being around family for long periods of time.

Something similar happend to me during a rough time in my life when I was struggling and looking for spiritual relief. When we struggle , we hold onto faith and that makes us vulnerable. I was pulled into this church by a few women who swore it helped them through a rough time. It was weird at first as they were changers and hand waivers , men and women crying, seizure like behavior, but that wasnt the worst. The " pastor" wanted to " help" me and asked for some one on one counciling. Yeah. He tried to get physical with me. I wasnt sure if I mistook what he was trying to do so I went to the service again and he cornered me and to,d me I would be his. When I asked the women about it they acted like God himself blessed me and I was a chosen one. They cried and prayed over me that I would accept this offer to be the pastors mistress basically. They were angry and harrassed me when I noped out. I was told the devil took hold of me because I wouldn't have sex with the pastor, yeah , I was married with 2 little kids , but hey that wasnt a sin at all.

There is reason behind everything! that RA was literally stalking you 🤯. Also that feeling that you had was your intuition. If something feels off that’s because it IS. Bri, like for real listening to your story made me dive deep into my nerd bag because I actually took a course in college called "Cults and Conspiracies" and everything you talked about in your story is definitely cult behavior. College students, sick people (people suffering/recovering from an illness, people of past traumas or just people looking for a new start are highly targeted by these groups. Actually focusing on college students, specifically college drop-outs or struggling students, they are prime targets for these cults because of the fact that these are people who are struggling with a new, unfamiliar environment and are usually looking for some sense of belonging or validation that they feel they were not getting during their college experiences. A lot of cult recruiters would actually work in the centers where students registered for or dropped classes because that was prime hunting ground for the most vulnerable students.
In actuality, all organized groups can exhibit cult-like behaviors: churches (of course), businesses, schools, fraternities/sororities, etc. Think about any time you worked somewhere and they would have group-building exercises (some jobs even host retreats). Or if you ever feel guilty about calling in sick to work because you were letting your boss down (or last time you called in sick and came in the next day or so, your boss and coworkers would side-eye you and make you low-key feel bad). These are not extreme forms of cult behaviors - though there may be some outliers that are definitely like such - but it does breed pseudo cult tendencies that are more socially acceptable. Cults are usually organizations formed with an agenda in mind to recruit and convert people to their ideologies. Which can be harmless but of course we know that is not always the case - especially when psychological games, ritualistic inductions (like baptisms or in more extreme cases sexual or drug-induced interactions), and obedience tactics come into play.
So I was definitely intrigued when you said that you feel bad/nervous talking about them or calling them a cult because they were so nice. You're not the only person who experienced that feeling after leaving a cult or cult-like organization. It is a side effect of the love-bombing. It is like if your dad tells you "I am really disappointed in you" and you were a daddy's girl so all you want is to get back on his good side. Cults will love-bomb you (i.e. the constant engagement, the smiling, the sense of belonging, the reaffirming group moments, etc) until the point they feel you are hooked on it or until (at least in your case it seems) the person they are recruiting seems to not be as receptive to their tactics as they would like. There are actually many cases where people will escape a cult and then consider going back (and sometimes do)! They feel that if they just do better and follow the rules then all will be well again when in actuality it will never happen. They may get love-crumbs but only enough to keep the person hooked to the ideas they were once promised. This is especially bad for people who remained in cult-life for years, completely isolated from any friends or family that they may have because it is almost like returning to strangers after the fact because the cult was your family for so long.
Anyways, so much more that could be said but I will definitely stop because this is already too long and I do not need no smoke from anyone. But I am glad that you mentioned that it is not always the people with the brochures and that friends, family, lovers and sometimes even an over-zealous RA can spring this on you. It is rare for someone to actually get a brochure and join, usually these people take time to study their recruits for long periods of time before approaching them or bringing up their organizations. Mainly because they do not want to waste time and they especially do not want someone who is going to ask too many questions, not be dedicated and just overall seem like more trouble than they're worth. So consider yourself lucky, sis!
Recommended read: Cults In Our Midst by Margaret Singer (clinical psychologist) and Janja Lalich (former cult member and professor) - it is a good, informative read (not too dry but actually easy to follow and very intriguing) and though it was written back in 1995, there is still a lot of relevant information that is so worth knowing.
Like my professor always said, "Knowing this information does not prevent you from being influenced by a cult or cult-like behaviors, but it will definitely make you a lot more aware of when/if it does happen."

Wow sounds like my story and the disciple church. My boyfriend was a member before we met. He had “fell away” as they say. We met and I eventually got pregnant. We were having problems and he told me one night we couldn’t be together cause he was going back to church. Didn’t understand. He then invited me to this church. It was people of all races and like u said they were all overly nice. Everyone hugging me and I was just like what is this. Right off the top I was invited to these bible studies. I felt weirded out and uncomfortable by this instant love and concern they were showing me. Mind u I’m still pregnant. My baby daddy said we can’t be together we need to focus on the lord first. I did the whole confessing sins to these women in the group got baptized all the while thinking that all this is weird but I wanted to make it work with my baby daddy so I went along with it. These people convinced me to move in with other women in the church. My baby daddy moved in to a house with other men. Like u said they kept us booked and busy with church activities almost every day. One other thing there was no physical church we met at hotel banquet rooms or members houses. Everyone had a disciple over them. Someone more ingrained in the church I guess. My whole goal was to be with my baby daddy honestly. This weird church had him going on dates with other members, group of course, while I’m sitting there pregnant. They break us down in these groups and go over our finances to make sure we’re giving 10% a week. Told me how I could sell my stuff to earn more money to give. Sometimes they would have a big gathering in bouquet rooms and show us videos of other members in other countries spreading the church’s doctrine. They explained to us these people couldn’t work so we had to give money on top of tides to support their missionary work. All the while I’m still pregnant I wasn’t allowed to be around my baby daddy without another church member with us. Even for doctor appointments. We literally snuck and went to the movies alone together on his birthday. Fast forward a few months still going through the church cultism, I just made that up. But I still wasn’t sold, it all seemed so fake. They encouraged me to not speak to my family or friends unless I was recruiting them in to the church. A few came that I invited and immediately sensed some cult stuff was happening. There was no missing church if u didn’t show up u had like 10 people calling u to see where you were. Long story short just so we could be around each other we ran to Vegas and got married. Really short turn around left Saturday night got back to LA in time for Sunday service. Once we told them we got married they were angry we didn’t seek church counseling first. Now we’re in the married groups. They separate church members by singles and married. I went along with the crap a little while longer before I had enough. I wasn’t like these sheeple, always kept the mindsets that this was some weird cult stuff. I accomplished my goal I got my baby daddy back and we were married. One day I woke up and told him yeah I’m done with this church. To my surprise he was too. We just stopped attending. They were blowing our phones up and everything. Eventually it died down they left us alone. All but his discipler, this man was relentless. He wouldn’t stop calling my now husband he was showing up at his job. It was all a lil gay for me. Like why this man won’t leave you alone. Anyways as you could guess that marriage didn’t last. We got married for the wrong reasons. Basically just to be around each other to please this church. It’s been almost 18 years now. I don’t go to nobodies church I have my own personal relationship with God. 🙏🏽

Some parts of her experience in the video and your experience sounds similar to the Mormon religion. At first, I was really concerned but there are strong red flags that the Mormon religion would never do. Her point about how entering a good church should be slow and gradual is very true. You shouldn’t be forced to do any thing at all, which separates healthy religion from cults. The devil likes to mimic God’s divine work and this is such a strong example to me. I’m very glad you got out of that and personally found God🙏
