    The zf5 was put in f-250's and f-350's from 87-97 although some 87s had 4 speeds. There were 2 models. the ZF5-S42 ran from 88-94 and the ZF5-S47 ran from 95-97 and could handle a little more torque than the s42. There were 3 different bellhousing patterns and the bellhousing is non removable. They came in a small block that fits the 300 inline 6, 302, and 351w. This one can be identified by the internal slave cylinder that rides on the input shaft. The big block or 460 zf5 has an external slave cylinder as does the diesel zf5. The big block will fit on the 370, 429, 460 and 514. The diesel zf5 will fit 6.9 and 7.3 idis as well as the 7.3 powerstroke. It can be difficult to tell the difference between the big block gas and diesel zf5 and the best way is to measure the distance between the upper bolt holes on the bellhousing. I am fairly certain that the 460 had wider hole spacing than the diesel ones. The zf5 also came behind the 4.6, 5.4 and 6.8 mod motors but those are not as easy to find since they were in production for a shorter amount of time.

    • @milesaway1980
      @milesaway1980 Před 2 lety

      Correct. Small block ZF5s were only in F250s and 350s, but were still relatively common. You'd find them behind the 300 and the 351w. They weren't in F-150s or Broncos since those came with the M5OD-R2.
      The nice thing about the ZF5 and M5OD is they also came in 4x4 configurations, which a lot of the other 5 speeds didn't.
      I swapped a ZF5 into my '85 Bronco behind my built up 300, and love it.

    • @evanwest1929
      @evanwest1929 Před rokem

      I believe the ZF6 was introduced with the modular engines - 6.8 and diesels. I don’t believe they were placed behind 4.6 or 5.4 engines.

    I appreciate watching your video's. I sadly sold my first truck (75 f250 390.) The 93 f350 4x4 frame swap idea was just too much for not having a shop. Ended up getting a 89xlt lariat Brick nose 4x4 IDI(factory ac, power locks,power windows, its a gem.) Watching the last few videos of the painting and rebuild of the suspension makes me wanna get an old 2wd Dent again or even a Bump and swap my extra IDI into one.

    The 99-04 v6 t5 has a torque rating around 300-330 ft lbs and is the same as a fox body trans. The only difference is having to swap tail shafts to accommodate the speedo you want to use since they use a magnetic style. Just for those that are having trouble looking for a fox body t5. Also the 94/95 t5 has a longer input shaft, and the 4 cyl t5 has a narrow input shaft. So if you have a fox body gt input shaft laying around, you can swap them.

    I am a sub for many years, not always positive but always honest an honest will get you home. What makes the "Burnouts" so popular and to do it to the daily driver with the valves talking about coming out of the valve covers.... I'm 73 and in some ways, ahead of you on mechanics but dollar to dollar, you whip me hands down on the small block ford or those said transmissions. My one 63 ford hardtop came with the 289.... I'm thinking, don't believe it was the three o two, all factory but behind it was a T85 close ratio trans... a three speed. When you lifted it up into your arms, you had a load in them. I could shot put the common old three speeds and they mostly died from my foot to clutch.... not this T85.... what made it so sweet was 45 in first and 90 in second.... third was just the same as any trans with the one to one. Have you heard of those transmissions as they were popular in police cars of that era

    Highly important note!
    ZF transmission configurations must be subdivided by: big block/small block; 4x2/4x4, with/without mechanical speedometer gear (87-91 were mechanical)

      Also applies to M5OD-R2, disregarding big block options.

    Anytime you see a 88-97 F350-F250 with the 5.8 and a manual you’ll normally find a SBF Zf5 the 302s and 300s had the Mazda 5 speed that’s trash

    The z-bar will fall if you break a motor support and then you can't use the clutch bud.

    Idk why there is so much zf5 talk in the comments but it’s not really a great swap for a half ton street truck, they are very HD and so has granny first gear, 5.72:1 on gas models which effectively makes it have 4 useful gears, 2nd, 3rd, direct and OD, not a great candidate for a light truck that wants to go fast. They also have very bulky, truckish shifting.

    im not being mean here but the thunderbird super coupes were the only tbirds to come with a 5 speed [unless you count the 80s 2.3 turbo coupes] and they are all supercharged 3.8 v6s, all the transmissions were asynchros. i use to own 3 80s tbird turbo coupes but am now building 2 90s tbird super coupes [both 5 speed] and an 89 f150 swb with a 351w and 5 speed

    • @devinwinn4628
      @devinwinn4628 Před 3 lety

      what i meant to say is all the 5 speeds in the super coupes were a m5r2 which is basically the same as the m5r1 5 speeds that youd find in a late 80s to 1996 f150

      The zf5 between the 460 and diesel are different. Another option is the m5odr2, they came behind 300 and 302 sbf in an F150. More of a truck transmission but for a bargain it could be done. Hydraulic clutch swap was easy when converting from auto. I didn’t have the z-bar set up.
