Updated for the full release version of Elite Dangerous, this Elite Dangerous trading guide / tutorial includes how to trade in Elite Dangerous for maximum profit, as well as Elite Dangerous noob trading tips.
Note you only need to watch the first 11 minutes for the trading guide!! From 11:15 the rest is bonus material showing you how to use the in-game trading map to find your own routes. I hope you find it useful :)
Trading tool used in this video: elitetradingtool.co.uk
All Elite: Dangerous intellectual property is owned by Frontier. - Hry
Played Elite about 35 years ago as a teenager. Worked out how to trade and got nice upgrades. Now it is easy making money in Elite : Dangerous as all the data we didnt have is easily available. Great video.
Magnificent video, my man!! Being an absolute noob, I found it extremely useful!!
And no annoying music either. Thank YOU!
This is the first trading guide I've seen that actually explains everything clearly.Really helpful. Thanks
+Zach Hogan Hey man, thanks for that :) Hope you sub and stick around for more content :)
Nathan I would like to praise your channel with how much I love and adore your style and videos. I just got done watching every single video and not a moment was wasted. Your strategies are just like mine and you are a brilliant thinker on the battlefield, your knowledge on history of ancient empires is incredibly interesting and fascinating to listen to, you are also funny. Thank you for providing new fresh content and entertaining and enjoyable videos. I wish you the best of luck out there! Most youtubers just follow eachothers footsteps but you walk your own path, which is truely the way to go, and its easier to connect with you as an audience we feel more engaged. Don't quit keep it up!
I'm just starting out in ED and I must say this tutorial helped a LOT with not only trading, but also the system map and trade routes that I had no idea previously how to get info on without visiting a system. Thanks for the help! I might actually get me into trading a lot more :)
i bought this about a month and a half ago got about 80 hours in so far. if you want you can add me. commander sexy Pete I believe is my name.
Fantastic explanation on how to use the Galaxy map for trading routes!! I was really wanting something like this.
Great vid dude, I like the full explanation on how to use the map to find routes, more so if the elitetradingtool site is not using full game data.
Subbed, so I want to see more of what you are 'doing' ! Cheers.
Helpful video! Just the bits about the view tab in the map helped me a lot. I'm super new, and only about 5 hours in, but I always loved to trade on EVE. Looking forward to getting a throttle and joystick so I can really tear it up.
Thanks for the help, can't wait to start my own trade route with my new hauler.
Great guide, best one I have watched so far.
Thanks for this, pretty nice guide. I've been making decent money from smuggling missions in my sidewinder, but those will get less profitable in the bigger cargo holding ships, because you'll never fill the cargo, so I was looking to get into old-fashioned trading as opposed to hauling, and this helps.
As someone who just got into elite dangerous, I've sub'd and liked and want to thank you for the tutorial.
Awesome tutorial, GamerNate! Absolutely first class :D ! I first started playing today by getting to know my area (although I had to put up a fight between a lone Python and my Sidewinder. Else I manage to evade the supercruise Intervention). I was lost for a while until when I found this video tonight. Congrats, mate, this video deserves to be on the wikia homepage. :)
+Ranwer135 Hey, I'm glad you found it useful and welcome to the channel! Hope you stick around for more space goodness ;)
+GamerNate Just to share some additional info for you all. The system "Beta Trianguli Australis" and "Zeta Trianguli Australis", is the best place for begginers to trade (and the safest from pirates, too). If any of you manage to upgrade your FSD to about 10LY, I highly recommend going there (Total journey is 50LY I think, but you can hop past close systems to get there). "Zeta Trianguli Australis" and "Beta Trianguli Australis" are 8LY apart, making trading very easy, with routes worth 3,000 CR profit (economy is reasonably strong as well). I managed to buy myself an Adder in a day (with bulletin boards as a bonus). But again, it's just some helpful info if anyone would like to try it out, or as a last resort. :D
Bought it 3 years ago and realised I never even played it, so starting today, this was super useful, thanks bro x
Extremely helpful tutorial. Thank you!
Good tutorial. I would recommend few things to minimize costs:
I noticed you have 104 tons of cargo space. Those 4 tons would cut costs if you replace them with Fuel Scoop. Bigger ships consume more fuel and costs increase tremendously. Once bought Fuel Scoop device will ensure pilot never need to spend another credit on Fuel. High quality Fuel Scoop device can ensure fuel scooping at rate of ~45 per second with temperature ~98% just by standing still close to the star.
Regarding traditional way of trading - I did it myself back in Beta or Gamma and little has changed. You started by explaining Import mechanic. However, for new player it is easier to explain Export (from current system to somewhere else) than Import (from some other system to current system). Import mechanic is good for doing early fetch missions and can speed up path from Sidewinder to Hauler to Adder to Cobra. But Import always should be explained after Export technique.
As for evading interdictions - it is actually an exploit. Elite Dangerous creates another instance once player drop from Super Cruise and once go back into Super cruise game creates usually new instance where Interdicting pursuer is probably gone (he is gone in 99% of cases). If player is flying well equipped Cobra or Asp while being interdicted by Sidewinder, Hauler, Eagle or even Adder - I advise to let be interdicted as interdictor usually has bounty and mentioned ships are not threat to Cobra or Asp. Player will loose some time, temporary interupt his monotonous routine of trading but by killing interdictor, player will earn more credits.
Thanks mate. Big help for this very green pilot.
Great advice for a newbie. Thank you so much!
Great and very informative footage . I personally took my sidewinder and went bounty hunting at extracting sites and got enough money to buy and cargo maxed a hauler then started doing short trade runs and trade missions . If I may add to newbies is don't sell yr sidewinder , keep it for bounty hunting and smuggling missions like the ' black box ' .. etc .
Awesome video thank you! I just picked up the game on Xbox One, you've helped me out a lot!
YES THANK YOU, I just bought a Cobra from bounty money, and figured I'd try to get into trading. This helped immensely, cheers.
Great video,it helped me A TON, thanks
just bought the game a few days ago. been looking at a lot of vids to learn. for anyone new, this is a great video.
agree with his statement about having a goal. i am creating a whole backstory around my adventures. love trading and exploring so far.
Crammed full of useful advice - it is amazing just how much information is being put out by you video makers and indicative of just how staggeringly HUGE the game is. :-)
I've been looking at starting to trade for a while now. This video is a great hub bud.
+Stapley Online Thanks mate. Welcome to the channel :)
A great vid thankyou for the information Nathan. Please make more!!!!!!!!
really nice video! way better as most of the others! thumps up!!! ;)
Great adice for someone like me. Just about to start and was a bit lost. Keep up the good work.
I hope you keep doing videos on Elite Dangerous... best I've seen for us beginners.
+Jeremy Rule Thanks mate. I'll pretty much always cover the game, even if i'm not playing it much myself.
Finally a guide showing what I was looking for to start out. Any chance for a refresh for the latest update?
thnx man, really nice for getting started! much appreciated
on a note 17:40when you purchase trade data you can compare the system trade data that you just bought in the current station market you are docked at. click where it says galactic average, and you can drop down to the system you want to compare directly. it will show you the imports and exports in that system and the ports that supply it in the pop up info when you select the product.
So if you have the trade data you do not need to visit each port to find what specific port exports it or buys it.
Thanks for the info, im glad i came across this video i needed the money for better gear.
Thank you so much sir hah.. I was searching for any video explaining that traditional way of doing trading, as you called it. All the video I watched were just, use this tool, this site, that site blah blah.. And I don't get it, I didn't understand anything. You explained it very easy and calmly, no hurries whatsoever. Great video with very rare information, I gotta say. :)
Fantastic, glad you liked. Hope you stick around for more from my channel :)
+GamerNate i didn't find this useful. Trading is just not for me except for black market trading( in game of course). But I think i will maybe trade a little bit. But mostly bounty hunting.
A recent survey found 99.9% of people found this tutorial "useful" :)
Awesome video! I would even recommend keeping at least double your ships rebuy cost, if not you will get your ship back, but with no funds to buy things to trade.
Nice one - Thanks so much for this guide. Going to check out the rest of your videos on Elite Dangerous
Cheers
Jim
+Jim Oates Hey welcome to the channel! I've got a pretty wide range of content on here - hopefully you'll sub and find something you like :)
Great help! Thanks Nathan
I saw this game come out on Steam 2 days ago. I had never heard of it and started to look up gameplay footage. What I saw, I thought was amazing! It seemed like a more user-friendly eve online, but with the option to go solo! I immediatly dropped $60 bucks and I can say that I don't regret it. It immediatly became addictive. I have been spending tons of time doing missions, but it doesn't seem to make too much money unless it is like a bounty hunter mission that requires a lot of upgrading to do without dying. So I heard trading is a good way to make money and it seemed a bit daunting at first, but this video makes it out to be much easier.
Lmao I got my copy for 9.50$ steam sale and a few years later xd
Great stuff, was having a devil of a time fidning the ecoinomy of systems. Was selecting them individually which was a nightmare!
Great job---very informative
Excellent video, I just started the game and this is exactly what I needed! And good on you for snagging CMDR Nate Dogg. ;)
Thnx for the tips they where extremely helpful. I didnt even know the galaxy map had so much info. XD
Hey Nathan, fantastic introduction to Elite. Very consise and informative mate, really very good indeed. Your presentation, information and advise, all superb quite frankly, wish you were a Beta backer, I could have learnt a lot from you, that said, no reason why I won't still. Look forward to seeing what else you post :)
yeah i know, me too, its not very good. most people use skype or teamspeak. good luck on your next venture!
very helpful, many thanks !
+Pinky Dino Hello and welcome to the channel! Hope you see you stick around for my ED Horizons let's play coming soon :)
Some good tips here; I'm still watching the video at the moment but I heard another thing to try is if you DO get interdicted and are noticing that you're struggling to escape, the best thing to do is slow right the way down to a stop and actually give in to the interdiction. If you're successfully interdicted and at full speed you take hull damage, you spin out of control a while and your FSD takes longer to charge up. If you give in to the interdiction, you can collect yourself quicker and power up your FSD much earlier, hopefully slipping away before the pirate can kill off your shields. - This is pretty much advice for all roles but maybe more helpful for explorers and traders
+McJohnstable Good point man. Thanks for adding that for everyone :)
+GamerNate Thanks. And your advice about dropping out of supercruise to avoid an impending interdiction has already helped me out a couple times now! So thanks also for that.
I had a really good location for trading at one point; but decided to go explore and never took down the two systems I was trading between... I've never found them again...
Pretty good general guide on trading thanks :)
+Jessy Cormier Thanks mate :) Welcome to the channel. Hope you subscribe and stick around.
Thanks Nathan for the Great guide and the explanation , it became more understandable and fun when it comes to ordinary barter.
and it will bring me more variety to the gaming experience
Have done some rare trading for awhile now,
with a spreadsheet that a found on reddit but goood it´s boring just going round and round same rote hour after hour and just landing and docking ,and the supply on etch station is just 4-5 items so i have to do 8-10 stations and then heading out 160ly and same thing again.
This detailed explanation will make the game more fun to play again!
thank´s a lot :)
Wonderful trading guide! Should help me get started early so I can buy that bigger ship. Hopefully this all translates as well onto the Xbox One version. Thank you sir.
great vid ,it helpt me alot ,tnx mate
man love the vid. wish i could get this game to play.
anyways nice vids thanks for this
Thank you, very helpful :)
Thank you. its very clear and easy to understand.
can you provide more "other tools" site, because on the description its contain over 10 day data on my base system
Just started playing this on mac, haven't played elite since the Commadore 64. It's a tad more complicated now lol
Thanks for the video it's very helpful
Thanks for the updated trading guide. You are right, most of the How To videos are dated already. o7 sir!
thanks for the info bro now I'm making some money!
Thank you for the video!!!
+Dat Spazy Mop Hey, welcome to the channel :) Hope you stick around.
this helps me alot, remember first real combat.... i died.... without a singel takedown -_- sooo... new methods to earn money have been accqured. thank you for the info, really appricate it :D
***** okey, gonna try to have patient until then
great video just come back to the game after a long break, didn't know what I was doing when I bought this game, was just interested in it, just getting my feet wet. Thrilled to have done a couple of cheeky slave missions to start out. I'll have that cobra soon!
+Neil Downing It's great doing those illegal missions. Try getting into a major port through the letterbox with some slaves in the hold! Also welcome to my channel. Hope you stick around for more (I have a new let's play series right now on this game).
I think when you get interdicted its best to yield to the interdiction by powering down your engines and soon as you enter normal space from supercruise start hitting your boost button. Doing it this way i think shaves 10 seconds off your frameshift cooldown time too but not sure on that. It does save you on been damaged by failing the interdiction
as far as i know.... i been yielding to the interdictions and not received any... maybe a bug or there is still a chance you could but ive never received any as of yet.
no problem :)
I found that the easiest way to get quick capital was to do smuggling missions. so here I get 2 canisters of narcotics that I have to smuggle to some outpost and I get 400k credits for it while I also explore star system on my way. It is very doable even in stock sidewinder, the only thing you need is a heat sink launcher which you deploy in case someone scans you. Still the trick is to accept smuggling missions from one outpost to another, where there is no security to begin with.
Also it gives you a bigger sense of accomplishment when you dock without being caught, not even to mention how you affect the status of the worlds by smuggling. Also, you are Han Solo now, congrats!
Found a god tier trade route. Over by the renpetani system (under extreme famine) (or at least the most desperate system I've ever visitied) they are requesting food and by selling them grain you make a little more than 1000% profit. Buy grain for 117 ish to 180 over at acants and sell for 3400. I have 112 cargo capacity and I make $365k per trip (11.3ly) best and easiest money made. Very refreshing and different from my normal bounty hunting routine. Also I recommend either the asp explorer or type 7 for these types of missions or trades. You need jump range if you have to travel far to purchase the appropriate goods and you need at least 100t of cargo space to maximize profit. The bigger the better. If anyone reads this within a week or so at least go get some easy credits!
thanks for this tutroiral wich i stumble upon it a mnd ago before going into a blaze of glory oh so many times :P you therefor got your self a sub :)
Good guide. You're saying to take screenshots but can the prices get outdated because I presume they fluctuate? Also, is there a way to know how much cash you need to cover insurance?
thank you very much
done very well
and a good voice too :)
+Wolfgang Wagner Thank you and welcome to the channel! Hope to see you around in the future :)
ETT rocks, I've been updating markets all over the place.
youtube promotes also a lot of comments and good answers and ups and interaction .. so i suggest also to make guides not only for trading that to be sincere can be boring for many other prople interested in this game... but i read other guides short guides that say that doing trading in the dangerous risky kind way it is the fastest way to earn in the beginncing of the game.
so i hope you will cover other ways.
nice tutorial ty :)
as a new PS4 player, I want to say I very much appreciated this video. it was the only one I've found that actually takes the time to explain how to manually find trade routes and what to look for.
seriously you're my hero right now, ty
thanks man good vid
+Tristan Jones Hey man, welcome to the channel :) Hope you stick around.
+GamerNate how do i jump into lightspeed
is there a trade route sight like this one for smuggling?
How do you control the free-look so easily? Head tracking or some 3d goggle maybe?
Hi Nathan. First of all, these youtube videos are really great for helping people out, having said that, I have looked at your video supposidly for Newbies and you start of by saying "Go to the bullitin board" this is all good and well, but you said it is for Newbies and all the other stuff you have said in this tutorial. Next time you do a video, could you do as you have done now but also "Go to the bullitn board" Shift F1 (or whatever it is) as us newbies watch your video, pause it, then try and find the bullitin board (and the other stuff) and that is if we can find it. Great video and thank you for doing them, but please do a WORD FOR WORD of whart you are doing and pressing. Many Thanks. Colin.
+Colin Parry Thanks Colin. True, I do assume you do at least know the game a little. It's always a bit of a balance doing something like this.
Thanks Nathen, I havent even managed to take off yet, I know the game from the past and what the story line is about, but I havent flown out of the hangar yet. (call me Mr thicko but I need a word for word description) if you don't mind. Watching the videos make it look so easy, but its like giving somebody a set of car keys and leaving them to it (Doh!) (LOL).
Maybe try CQC or the training so you can get used to flying first?
nice vid very relaxed and useful.....Ta
+andymouse123 Thank you and welcome to the channel :) Hope to see you around for the Elite Dangerous Horizons let's play next week.
can you bring cargo from high tech system to a low tech system for more profit?
onelasttitan no
thanks, i was wondering how you get any profit from trading
when I play Frontier elite 2 I had a note pad with me and jot prices down for ref later but taking a screen shot would take less room lol
can i keep the cargo i just bought in my ""bank"" or station and sell it when it might get higher value?
Thanks for some great advice. I tried horizons today and was disappointed how badly the game is set up for beginners_! I mean I only had 2 slots free because of the buggy taking up 2 slots and with only one single mission available to deliver data / get killed on the way! Now barely enough to cover fuel costs.
So I fly to another station.... same problem, only there you are not good enough to take on a simple delivery because your lower than penniless! They need to get a few more options going here.
So then I was looking for minerals on planets, just to get enough for fuel costs!
I ended up frustrated, as when I should return another player shoots you down even when they must be able to see you have nothing to give! Why are there no missions
When you get the goods for trading, where and how do you sell your goods? Do you go back to the same station you took the mission from?
Mike Babaie on the right of the commodities screen it will say exported to, you need to take them to a system there, but also look for whats imported to the station you are buying from (this is a trade route) so you buy goods from point A and take to point B, then buy from point B and take to point A
is Eravate a good starting system?
I just stumbled onto this and it will be very useful. I really like your videos, although it might have something to do with the fact that I'm called Nathan as well.
Can someone help me with a newbie question: How do I hand over my cargo (2x copper) when i took over a job to deliver it to a station. I am at the station and there is no option to hand it over, just an option to drop the job.
I am now in deep trouble as I sold the copper on the market at the target hoping that this would could as hand over. Now I have to pay a fee and do not have the money.
So: I see the job in transaction and there is no way to hand it over. What do I have to do?
Thanks for this video :) You really showed this game is not for me. There are way to many things you have to control here.
watching this video, i really want to get into trading until i get a proper throttle an joystick, been playing for 2 days (about 5 hours in total) and im in big need of cash, but now thanks to your vid i might try this after work an see how it goes
SGT Alchemy If you've got an xbox you can use the controller instead of the keyboard, it makes life in elite soooo much easier, you just need one of these: ugh link isn't work, google Xbox 360 Wireless USB Game Gaming Receiver Adapter
David Seymour or if you've got an xbox one, just use that and the plug and play charging wire.
David Seymour Honestly, with some careful rebinding the game is more than playable with mouse and keyboard. More immersive if you have a joystick or HOTAS setup, but I don't see the point when M&K is actually really easy to use when you unbind roll from the mouse like default lol, and make some other adjustments.
Are you using the TrackIR?
on my game in he trade windows it dos not say high or low demand it has 3 box's either there is 3 full box's 1 full box. so not sure if 3 full box's is in low or high demand :)
Great guide, saved my ass
In the drop down list at 1:20 why do I only have 'population'?
hi there, so just bought the game like yestarday n i have no idea how to trade, your video was really mind opening jajaja thanks for the vid, btw which micro are u using , the queality is really good.
thanks
thansk fro answering men , :)
ho i have not check that out , but i will men, thanks for taking the time
So once you have done all the boring trading part of the game to get the ship you ultimately want, what then? What is the end game play like? Are there wars and stuff to join in with?
if this game is a open world where you decide what is happening right? then when you purchase the 100 data information on trade routes of super conductors then where is thise 100 money going? do we know who gets those 100 credits? not everything is explained i guess...
It is great if you got a nice ship whit a chunk of money. But i don't know what to do in the first hour of the gameplay. 1000 Cr, Sidewinder with 4 cargo, you can't do trade with a lot of profit, because you only got 1000, my question is, what i must do?
so its a good idea to have a laptop or tablet handy to use this website...evertime i press the windows button in windows 7, i get to the desktop and then the game crashes preventing me from getting back into the game lol
The other problem is you dont have a choice where you can start, its random, and SOL is usually a good couple hundred light years away..would have been nice if we all could have started around there or close to it..several hundred light years away is a very long distance in a crappy starter ship.
Unfortunately the elitetradingtool is no longer here.
Can I get away with using keyboard and mouse or do I need a HOTAS for trading?
Thanks for the tips. I just got this game 2 days ago but I've got no clue on how to do anything. I can fly around, made a jump to a wrong location... and that's it. Been fiddeling around with the voice control most of the time.
So it's nice to see these tutorials besides the ones made by the company. Just one question: how likely is it that more veteran players attack you?
***** alright, thank you. Just started doing some jobs for small payments (about 3000 credits). Its alright but slow. Time to do some illegal jobs ;)
***** got my adder yesterday. Already upgraded most parts and got better weapons. Its a nice little ship. Finaly getting jobs of 40.000 credits and trading pays off a lot more.
***** In terms of speed and maneuverability it's no better when flying normaly. Only when at lightspeed it's a bit faster. But knowing it's a bit bigger does feel better. It also has more weapon capabilities which means a few pirates had a bad day: 2 pulse guns and a gattling gun do the job quite nicely. My cargo, get off.
Lennart just worked my way to lakon 6. 104 cargo space at the moment. earned itself back pretty much in like 1h30min maybe + the upgrades. hauling shit in a trade route that you yourself scoped out, is a good feeling, without using any 3rd part tool. great game that makes me want to get a joystick (hota?)
stalkerlohh 3 months ago but: Lakon type 6 was a great little freighter. Shortly after the main comment I found a few friends who were playing this aswell.
We later formed a wing, continued trading and hunting and the money rolled in. Currently in a nicely upgraded Imperial Clipper. 160 cargo slots or about 200 when I remove my extra fuel tank and fuel scoop and downgrade my shield.
Never played this with a joystick. I fiddled with the controls a but and now the mouse and keyboard work very nicely.
Hello, great tips! I got the game 2 days ago and have just now gotten to 100k. Only thing I bought is a fuel scoop. My only problem right now is that I really don't know what to buy... I like trading but haven't really tried combat yet outside the tutorial and wanted to do bounty hunting. For BHing I would probably get an Eagle (1 top gimbeled multi and 2 fixed bottom pulse), a K-warrant sensor and probably some other things so I'm not even sure I have the money for it. But for trading should I get a Hauler or an Adder with this money? Or maybe keep exploring and questing until I have money for an even better ship???? So many decisions...
I could also technically go for rares with the SW, couldn't I...
***** Thank you for actually answering me! Unfortunately I just lost 10k in a stupid ship crash :(
So do you recommend starting off trading until I make my way up for a multipurpose ship? Another thing I could do would be stay with the SW until I buy a viper...
***** Can the Adder actually look after itself nicely?
Arrived at rare place, no adder for sale :(
Vanayequi btw...
Where does the 'purchase trade data' come from? I don't have that option.
You need to use the discovery scanner on thing
why use the tool? I take it the in game maps and routes are busted?
Another great vid but I want you to keep up the vids please. I forgot to ask you to continue with the info. Once again thank you.
