When harvesting meat try to do so in the smallest increment possible. For instance, if there is 5.1 kg of mean, then select the maximum amount and then reduce the amount by .5 until you get .1 kg. Then start harvesting. This won't help you harvest the meat faster, but it will help you increase your cooking skill faster. 5kg of meat in .1kg slices is 50 points to cooking. The faster you get cooking up the sooner you can eat predators and ruined food and not get sick.
In the early game, it very risky to carry meat or raw guts. If you grab some rabbits just before you reach a shelter then cook them and eat them all before you leave that shelter and preferably before you go to sleep (so you can recover condition).
Make a plan on how to survive. My plan involves finding the hammer and saw and getting to Forlorn Muskeg and making arrow heads, a knife, and a hatchet and somewhere along that line a bow and some arrows.
In the early game when you have no weapons and little equipment you should keep moving to new locations. Grab a rabbit when you can but try not to travel with the meat or guts. The wolves can smell you from a long way off and you are very vulnerable. Also, keep exploring because everything in the game is decaying. Food, tools, and especially clothing. You can make some clothing but not hats, shirts, or long johns or wool socks. If you don't find those items before they decay then they are ruined forever.
Manage your time wisely and plan ahead. If it's storming and you are stuck in place then do something. Either mend clothing, cook food, make water, or read a book or sleep. This game is a race against time and in Interloper the storms are only going to get worse as time goes on. Get things done now and don't waste a minute. Some things can be done in the dark and others need light.
Drive a deer into a wolf and the wolf will kill the deer. Approach the wolf until it starts to growl at you and quickly light a fire. The wolf will flee as soon as you try to start a fire whether you succeed or not. The wolf will not return to devour the kill now. So you can either harvest the deer or leave until a safer or more convenient time.
If you can't find matches in the early game you can use a flare to light a fire. Make sure you have lots of wood and cans or pots to make water. You can find cattails but you can't find clean water very often. Make enough to keep you hydrated until you can find matches. Believe me it sucks to die of dehydration because you can't find matches and then to finally find them and start boiling water but die before the water is boiled. Been there. The thing is I would have been okay but I wasn't used to the new cooking system and I let the fire go out before I cooked the water. Interloper: where simple mistakes kill you just as often as the wolves.
Getting in a tree or behind the railings of a porch can cause animals to ignore you.
While crouched: throw a stone to divert a wolf or a bear or to bring them closer.
If you are going to eat predator meat and risk getting parasites then eat the biggest piece you can find. Your risk of parasites are based on the meat being from a predator not the actual weight of the meat. Eat 10 .1 kg pieces of bear meat and your risk will be 10 times more than if you eat 1 1kg piece.
Reishe Mushrooms and Rose Hips all give calories when cooked. Cook them in advance to increase cooking skill and drink them to give nutrition and hydration.
If you have a prepared Old Man's Beard Dressing then you don't need to carry peroxide. Save yourself the weight.
Pain pills weigh less than Rose Hips but Rose Hips don't decay. So, use the pain pills and eat the Rose Hips for food. Later on when you run out of pain pills there will still be plenty of Rose Hips around.
If the wind is blowing out your fire you can still keep it going and keep cooking by placing a single stick in at a time. The wind may knock the fire time down to 9 minutes and then you keep cooking until there is 1 minute and throw a stick in. That stick boosts the time back up to 11 minutes (or so) and the wind will then knock it down to 9 minutes again. You can do this for hours.
The longer a fire burns the hotter it gets and that heat continues until the fire finally goes out. Every piece of wood you put in boosts the temperature and that temp doesn't decrease but will only increase as you add more wood. Completely opposite of physics.
When you harvest meat all the animals in your vicinity stop moving during the whole time you take to harvest. So, if you see wolves near by you don't have to run away or even build a fire. Just harvest and make your escape before they see you.
Arrows will persist in the world even if you shoot an animal and never find that animal once it dies. Just keep an eye out for stuff on the ground and eventually you may find it. And if you do find the animal but not the arrow then look nearby. Sometimes they roll down hills after the animal dies or maybe they are laying on top. Mark the area and come back later and the arrow will probably be there.
Lighting a fire next to a dead animal will help you stay warm while you harvest the meat, but it also causes the meat to decay faster. For animals like a bear, you may lose a lot of meat if you don't harvest quickly. It may be better to make a fire nearby and go and warm up and come back to harvest.

Long time not see... If I may add what I've learned and made a habits of my own playing looper:
    - Leave your food (especially meat) outside to keep it fresh longer, I am using drop decoy function to do it fast just before entering building it's a second nature while I am playing.
    - Fire daisy chain: another trick I often use is daisy chain fires when I am travelling during fog in wolf dense areas. After lighting a fire with a torch just add enough sticks to pull out another torch from it and when it's condition is about 20% light another fire with it. During fog you can easily be jumped by the wolf(s) so making fire safe heaven is quite handy, it will also help you avoid loosing orientation and what is also important it's (relatively) warmer during fog and there is no wind, so wasting time to make short fire does not make you loose so much condition due to the freezing, this way you can also "transfer" fire by long distances saving the match in a cost of a couple of sticks which you will probably easily find during such a "fire hooping".
    - Fishing: before using hooks for fishing first use them to repair your stuff, when the quality of a hook drops to 1% then use it for fishing, this way when your line breaks during fishing you are not loosing potential repair tool, also not a tip but observation (not really important but interesting): when you collect oil while cooking fish drop low quality oil leaving good ones on you - those will be filled up to full in their quality order.
    - Cat tails heads: when you no longer need tinder you can use them for marking directions, it's especially useful in Forlorn Muskeg where there are plenty of cat tails and foggy weather is dominant so you can be easily lost (you know that well Nate :) ), just make an arrows pointing to desired directions helping you navigate trough, drop a few on a ice to mark safe passage so you will avoid weak ice areas, you can use different shapes of arrows to create a few paths leading to a important places, oh and you can also use those in a caves to navigate faster through them.
    - Use bed / bedroll bonus to quickly regain your warmth, when you entered any place like a building or a cave just to warm up jump into a bed / bedroll (take in account that some beds give you better bonus than others), use pass time function to warm up (you can always abort using ESC when you are done).
    - Do your math, it's good to know how many calories you will need for a sleep, you can always abort eating using ESC so you can eat exactly as much as you will need for a sleep, using vanilla interlooper optimal sleep time to regain as much health as possible is 10 hours, you will loose some condition due to a thirst at the last moments of sleep but you will gain more because of exponential mechanics of recovering condition during sleep (the longer you sleep the more condition you gain).

Very nice tips, just adding some of my own:
      - Leave all your food outside except the cans
      - Repair clothes with the tackle until it drops to 10%, then use it for fishing
      - Try have a lit torch in your hand at all times after you had a fire (you can also lit fires with flares, BTW)
      - For directions I use burned out torches, as you can point them towards the safe haven (it has a pointy end :) )
      - Try to make fires only outside as they last longer (less fuel needed), fishing huts count as outside
      - Kill 4 bunnies with stones ASAP and get their hides + guts starting to cure in the nearest house/cave. By the time you'll finish exploring a map you might have them cured and you can already start making the rabbitskin mitts
      - Make notes in your journal what you left where (treat it as your inventory) especially for things left for curing like skins/guts
      - Harvest early all the deer carcasses. Leave the meat on the ground after harvesting it if you're not going to eat it as it attracts predators to you
      - Cook all you can (including cans/tee even if you don't eat/use them) to get to cooking lvl 5 ASAP, after lvl 5 you can eat cooked predator meat without risks
      - Learn how to do the walk backwards away from wolves to a safe haven thelongdark.wikia.com/wiki/Wolf#Walking_away_from_wolves
      - Make a quick fire when a wolf starts to stalk you, it's better that you lose a match, than your playthrough :)
      - To raise your bow skill, make arrows (especially during blizzards, when you have to stay inside). If you have enough arrow shafts, you can harvest existing arrows and build brand new ones. As soon as you get to lvl 3 the bow sway will be reduced a lot, making the aiming a bit easier
      - Bait wolves and kill them as they go for the bait (easier to predict their movements)

I have 400 hours in this game and I didn't know you could light torches off of torches on the ground. I always just made another fire and grabbed the next torch that way. Thanks man!

Awesome, great to see you back. (I was starting to wonder lol). Good vid, pretty comprehensive. There's a few things I personally do, not sure how good they are as general tips, like "never walk around empty handed outside if you have something you can hold to fight off wolves like a flare or a weapon" and stuff about establishing priorities based on immediate need, but I think the only 'generally important' thing you could have maybe added to your list (and you actually showed by example when you spawned - 1:39) would be knowing the maps and geography of Great Bear fairly well before you try interloper. Recognizing that first spawn point and then knowing where you are in relation to everything else is, for my runs, key to getting off to a good start.

    Nice video!
I've never fished seriously, esp. not on Interloper. But I'm hunting all rabbits I see around (as long it's safe from predators & cold/storms).
Typically I get 2-3 rabbits from a spot that they spawn at. If you get at least two rabbits per day you'll have enough food for the night (ie 2x500~540 = 1000~1080 calories).
I didn't manage to survive very long though, but it has always been the wildlife that gets me.
My longest Interloper was about a month, at which point I had water for about two more months and food for about 25 days (assuming I spend about 800 calories per 24h only before sleeping)
I had deer pants & boots and of course the rabbit mittens. Still no sharp tools, only a hammer and a crowbar.
But I got surprised by a blood-thirsty ... moose :) I was running up from Alan's cave (in Mystery Lake) towards the Carter Dam, and just behind one of the corners I got a moose, at the moment I noticed it, it was already too close and attacked immediately. I got annoyed that I'll have to deal with the broken ribs, but decided that it's a good challenge, so stomped half to death (actually about 60-ish % because I was 100% before) I tried to continue to the safety of Carter Dam, but the Moose didn't get far and just turned back and stomped me again - there was nothing I could do to prevent the 2nd attack (not that I got a change to react no the 1st one either). To my surprise I still survived at about 20-ish % life with not a single intact rib :) so I tried to push for the Carter Dam, but only few meters from where the Moose stomped me there was a wolf :/
Actually I've never seen a wolf staying this close to a moose - they usually get scared away much further away.
Don't know if that was a bug, but earlier on the same play-thru I got attacked by a wolf THRU the DOOR of a fishing hut!!! Luckily I was close to 100% and already had the hammer so survived and recovered only to get in the above inescapable situation :(
Yesterday I got killed by a wolf again (this time little South of Alan's cave to where the river turns). I was over 60% got half my energy yet and a hammer I was again going for the Carter Dam, and met a wolf. I was very close to the place where the river tuns West and circles around the back of Alan's cave, so I backed calmly and when broke the wolf's line of sight I sprinted - this usually works fine, and you can normally hear the wolf's howling when he loses your tracks.
But not this time, I actually ran quite some distance, so should have been more than plenty to lose the wolf, and I'm sure he didn't see me when I started to run.
So with my stamina exhausted I kept walking and 10 seconds later that same wolf jumped me, with no warning (growling or anything), and ... Fin again :/
I've dies similar ways when leaving the Lighthouse in Desolation Point, after crossing the two wooden bridges there's a kinda like corridor before you reach the asphalt road, and that's a place where a wolf can be waiting right behind the corner, giving you no chance to react at all. I've died so many times there that I started to leave the Lighthouse by climbing the steep rocks down.
I'm used now to leave the last few grams of meat when eating to use as bait, but there're still plenty of situations where I don't have time even to drop a bait :/
I would appreciate any advice on how to stay safer from wild-life (the rest I'm dealing with ok)

I knew all the tips except the match glitch. I sort of disagree with fishing, tackles are not going to last long and the calories are not good enough for the amount of time (not only wood) you have to spend. The worth of calories (or wood, clothes or anything) is measured in the amount of time you need to get them, because time winds down all of the survival meters (including calories). They are a renewable food resource, though. My #2 tip for interloper is to keep moving and only take food that comes for free, mainly cat tail stalks and rabbits. I.e. not even harvest deer carcasses. The #1 tip would be knowing the maps by heart, and #3 to know the day cycle, i.e. travel evenings into the night until you summit (and to summit as quickly as possible).

    • @kbzoncapo777

Not so much, in an interloper run, the amount of food you need to not starve is insane. You burn your calories like crazy, only exception if you dont move or go out.
I agree that the Well Fed buff helps a lot in some situations, specially if you are gonna be doing some climbing or long travel. But outside of those situations, if you dont have too much food (like in interloper) it is still very viable and (imo) necessary, for interloper at least.
