  • If your water bill suddenly seems rather high, this could well be the culprit. The good news is, it is pretty easy to fix.

He was the one who had patience and gave encouragement when I would assemble or tinker with small things, while my mom would scold me and do the thing herself, because it was faster and more efficient. • @DanThomasUK

Thank you Al, I actually fixed two issues thanks to you. Hissing toilet = replaced inlet valve. Watery back of toilet = replaced the outlet seal as here. When I took my seal out, it was caked with limescale but also, to me, looked as if it was too small to block the hole it was going into. Just cleaning the scale off didn't help. I went to a plumbers shop and they had a seal that had the same internal diameter but a wider external - which seems to do the trick by actually blocking the slow outflow of water. This was also causing the toilet to 'gulp' and have to refill slightly every so often to replace the water lost down the back. So goes to show how the outlet and inlet affect each other and BOTH can be broken as in my case. Thank you so much for saving me from gulping, hissing toilets :-)

Thanks. Really useful info. Helped me eliminate the syphon and the inlet valve as the cause of the problem (new installation). Even with water-off, syphon removed and just a residual cm of water in the bottom of the cistern, it was still trickling. In my case root cause was poor sealing of the syphon base to the cistern ceramic surface (jagged surface finish of the ceramic) . Fixed with silicone :)

Great explanation, flipped the rubber washer seal over and appeared to fix it, however checked on it the next day and was leaking again so had to replace the washer with new one, so keep in mind if you just flip the washer it may only be good for a very short term temporary fix until you get to the store to get a replacement washer.

Al, i had this exact same problem with the cistern turned out the problem was the plastic follower behind the rubber washer had cracked in two, therefore not creating a good seal, simply superglued the follower back together, problem solved. Having VERY limited plumbing knowledge, despite it not being the rubber washer I would never have thought of looking at this and finding the problem. Thank you so much 👍🏻
