    Great points Ron! I always take an outer shell year round. Warmer weather I use an ultralight. Then late Fall I use a shorter Rain jacket and pants. Then for deep cold I have a waterproof insulated ski jacket like the blue Columbia one you use. All of them are larger so I can wear them over a bunch of layers if need be. I agree, this layer is very important. Great video! 👍

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine  Před 6 měsíci +1

      I have had that rain jacket or shell for quite awhile now. I thinking about a lighter one for hiking in warmer weather. What would you recommend?

    • @backpackingadventures4813
      @backpackingadventures4813 Před 6 měsíci +1

      @@AdventureswiththeMarine for warmer weather my gear is mostly ultralight including my rain jacket/outer shell. Mainly because where I hike it’s very warm and very humid so I need something that breathes while wheeling it in the rain. But I usually sweat anyway in hot weather wearing one. But my gortex is just way too much warmth for warm weather. My favorite is the one I have now which is the Visp from Enlightened Equipment. They are specifically designed to go over their Torrid (puffy) jacket at the same size so if you would choose that one make sure you choose the same size as your Torrid if you plan on taking that in warmer weather. (I usually always have July puffy regardless of the time of year.). It’s pricy but not as much as some and they recently started selling them again. I don’t like the OR helium jackets because they feel clammy and like a rubber suit when I wear it. Zpacks has a good one but it is very expensive and the cut is meant for someone that is a bean pole, which I’m not lol. Mainly they are tight in the arms and I have two of them in different sizes but the arms are identical as far as fit. Frog Toggs makes very light and cheap rain gear. If you were a beginner I would say start with that. But it is also very cheap in quality. In the end it’s up to your personal preference and budget. But I think the best is the EE Visp. I have the rain pants as wells. Love them.

      I use a poncho for many years in the Marine Corps. Very versatile. I have a hybrid poncho that goes over myself and the pack. I haven't used it in years. I guess I must of forgot about it. Umbrellas work great , as long as there is no wind. Thank you Sheilahenry for watching. I really appreciate it.

    Good information. I learned a lot about how to dress for the winter when I started mountain biking in the snow. There was a learning curve to it for sure. What brand fo jackets are the brown hardshell and the blue softshell you were wearing? My Hubby needs a new "shell" and I could use some recommendations. HENRY! I just put some links down below. The Bergan is now so expensive. But any hard shell rain jacket will do. But the soft shell is from Columbia called the Whirilibird that was discontinued. But is now back. That jacket. If they are still made the same. I my warmest jacket. You will always see me wearing that in extreme cold temperatures. A size up on that jacket for layers underneath.

      Vapor barrier sock are for those trips. Where you are going to be out for many days. And when you do get to camp. You are to change to wool socks. The best comble for you would be a good pair of Marino wool socks. They can be thick as long as your boots are loose fitting. If you socks get damp. Dry them out or use a fresh pair. Thank you for watching. I really do appreciate it.
