Frist time Ultralight hiking with a pack weight under 10 lbs. / Centennial Trail / Black Hills SD
Worked for DoorDash for months to raise funds to purchase all new ultralight gear. To get a pack load under 10 pounds to take on a 5-day trip on the Centennial Trail in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Not only to just have a light load on my back. But to have gear in the pack. That could handle different situations and also adverse conditions. That would make me comfortable no matter what. Watch me test this gear in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Will it thrive or survive?

    I wish people would stop worrying about environmentally friendly. That is what you have to be to enjoy nature. So stop stressing on the word. Nature is the environment and thus our need to be environmentally friendly . Of course there is no need to freak out over synthetic things either, especially if you drive any kind of vehicle. There are no real environmentally friendly vehicles. Since all vehicles are electric (you know, the battery) just chill out. Or a bear will get you.

    I got a double layer Warbonnet hammock I'm going to use in the Boundary Waters. I have a nice mummy bag, but I just don't like the snug closed in feeling. I thought about unzipping it open and putting it between the hammock layers and using it for insulation. Then I'll be in another rectangular bag. You think that set up would work to keep my backside warm ? I enjoyed your video !

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine Před 9 dny

      What I would do if you are not using an under quilt. I would get a large closed foam pad. ( you can find them at most department stores. And they are very inexpensive. ) And put it in between the layers of the hammock. That is one of the main reason they made double layers. Than take your sleeping bag. Zip it down to having 18 inches to the bottom to create a footbox. Flip it upside down. And use it as a top quilt. And tuck in the sides next to your body when you get cold. You are going to be comfortable and sleep like a baby. Make sure you get a large enough pad. And try it out before you go to dial it in. I love the BWCA. My favorite place on earth.

    Not sure why the foam pad would be warmer on top vs. on the bottom of the air mattress. What makes the difference and why

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine Před 17 dny

      The air in the mattress is not an insulator. But the opposite. Even though some have insulation built in. It dose not come close to a closed foam mat. In cold temperatures. The air mattress will bring comfort. The closed foam mat will provide great warmth. I have been with people who do not listen to that advise. But after a cold night. They will try it the other way. And are surprised. Thank you Ricksilver for watching.

    • @ricksilver7398
      @ricksilver7398 Před 17 dny

      @AdventureswiththeMarine makes total sense now given the explanation. My thoughts were insulated air mattress with pad on bottom would better block the cold from the point of infiltration and body heat transfer to the mattress, but heat rises so, that could be part of the problem not thinking comfort vs warmth. I've never been in that situation but will know if it should ever arise. Thx for the input and keep up with the awesome advice

      The Quilted Chameleon ( which is a full length. 30 degree ). weighed 38 ounces. The hammock that I used. Dream Hammock Darien. And the Hammock Gear Phoenix ( which is 3/4 length. 40 degree ). Both together weighed 22 ounces - 623 grams. With my hammock Gear Hex Tarp ( with cordage and four stakes ) And my Top Quilt ( Hammock Gear Burrow UL ). Had a combine weight of 43 ounces - 1219 grams. That is ultra light. Don't get me wrong. But the Quilted Chameleon. Is a great light weight hammock. No adjusting the under quilt. Which I had to do each time I got in and out of the 3/4 length. Thank you Ctdefender110ct5 for watching. I really appreciate it.

    Great video. What material is the ground reflector made of? Is it something you bought at a store or did you make it yourself?

      Aluminum foil. It came with the stove. But you can easily make one out of a turkey pan that you buy in a department store. Thank you Malloryvidena for watching. I really appreciate it.

    Had the same issue with the Platypus. Very disappointing. Fortunately I did test at home. Happy Runner could come to the rescue

      It was so foolish of me not to test that filter. I guess I learned an important lessen. Never make that mistakes again. What would I have done without Runner! Thank you Maritimegirl for watching. i really appreciate it.
