I had screwed the two upper screws and immediately realized it was glued on and I needed to go to CZcams. Ty!
Glad it helped
When I couldn’t get the exterior cover off with two different screwdrivers (glad I couldn’t), I went straight to youtube and there you were. Thanks for the upload, priceless!
I'm glad I could help.
😂😂 I almost did the same mistake
wow I wished I watched your video before I unscrewed the 2 upper center screws, Thanks for the tips
Quang Pham I did the exact same thing lol.
You're welcome.
Thank you for posting this video! I was in the middle of prying off the red cover when I thought to search for a video. I’m so glad I did! Also, thank you for the reminder we shouldn’t touch the lightbulbs.
Aimee Tognetti I’m glad I could help. :)
Hubby and I were struggling with that red cover as well 🤦🏻♀️
Thanks a million!!! I was getting frustrated trying to figure out why the lens didnt come off when unscrewed. I almost tried to pry off the lens like a dummy... Thanks Again 4 saving me some money
I'm glad I could help.
I just wish I had trusted my instincts and not my mechanic, but I hadn't gotten it all the way unsealed yet when I insisted on stopping for the night. 10 minutes after we had come in, the mechanic sent me this video link..! 2002 Toyota Highlander SUV WITH a spoiler an inch above the center break light lens... Thank you putting out this video!!!
I’m glad it was helpful.
Thanks you just saved me a whole bunch of trouble!
You’re welcome. I’m glad the video was helpful.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!! From do-it-yourself senior grandma!!!! I would have unscrewed the two screws!!!!!!
My hatch lock is broken which is a huge headache!!! I fixed it once before but this time it’s broken. Gotta climb in the back! Ugh!!!

Thanks! Prevents me from trying to remove those screws and getting frustrated. Actually thought there was more than one bulb in there. (2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid) Will be checking shortly.

I did on screw those two screws but thought twice when I couldn't easily pry the lens off. Very helpful video, especially for the do not touch reminder, tyvm!
On my 06 highlander (non hybrid) though I did not have to remove the wire, it came out fine still attached. Also, there were 3 like clips and a 4th clip in there too.
Glad I could help.

Just saved me a headache, our highlander has a spoiler/wing and no clearance for the screws anyway, thanks a bunch. Extremely helpful!
I'm glad it was helpful. Thanks for checking it out. Happy Holidays.
Yeah mine also has the spoiler on it. I was able to unscrew those screws and tried to remove cover then stopped and went surfing. Lol. Thanks man.
Glad it helped
Mine had a spoiler too. Looked here thinking there might be an easier way. Glad I found this clip.
@@momusicfan I’m glad it was helpful
This actually is quite helpful because it almost looks obvious that you have to remove that lens, and it wouldn't be until you removed that lens that you'd learn the correct way. lol Thank you in 2021!
I'm glad it was helpful. I appreciate your comments.
Good tip
Glad I could help.
Is it the same bulb as the other two?
Thank you
I’m glad it was helpful
Thank you!! Phew😅
You’re welcome. 👍
Alldata says to remove the screws! Thanks
Great video, I like others, would have immediately gone out there and tried to remove the two screws! On an interesting note, your number of likes was on "666" glad I could add that extra "like" to get it past that oh so lovely number!!!!!😅😁😜👍🏻
I’m glad it was helpful and thank you for getting me past the number. lol.
@@ReichpoloTechLOL!!! Welcome!!!😆
Hi! Do you still remember the bulb and where did you buy it? Thank you in advance.
I believe its # 921. They are available at most auto parts stores and probably ebay and Amazon as well. I believe I got mine at AutoZone.
LOL
I thought I heard the cover fall off the inside of the tailgate.
Push it all the way in man!
I don't think it feel off, but I did take it on and off several times when I was making the video, so it could have been slightly loose on one of them. I just went and looked at it and its on there tight.
Unfortunately, the part attached to the vehicle that you screw the bulb holder out of and back into, for my vehicle it was deteriorated /calcified from the old bulb burning out/melting and now the hole is rounded out after removing. I cannot even screw the new bulb holder w/ new bulb back in. I trying laying the bulb inside the hole & taped the connecting wires to the metal panel alongside, but the bulb still moved and touched the plastic area around it while driving and going over bumps. The hot bulb merged into the nearby plastic around it that it touched. If this was a bulb replacement that did not get hot enough to melt plastic it would not be an issue. Hard to remedy.
Yeah that is an unfortunate situation. You may need to get a new socket in there or possibly you could epoxy the old socket back in there to hold it. If you do something like that, just make sure you don't get the epoxy on the threads inside or the bulb, so that you can change it when it burns out next time. I am not sure if that will work, but it's an idea. I don't know exactly what yours situation looks like. Good luck to you, though.
@@ReichpoloTech I could not find a new socket after searching multiple sites. However, I did find an LED on Amazon instead of a light bulb that was originally used. The amazon website indicated the LED would fit my 2006 Toyota Highlander. The LED is not hot like the light bulb so it does not melt into the surrounding plastic or aluminum and it is also much more sturdy to any vibration than a glass bulb. I was able to place it partially thru the hole and secure it with some gorilla tape temporarily for now (diode was much longer than the bulb). At least now I do not have to worry about getting pulled over by law enforcement.
@@randys6220 Hey Randy, I have a 2005 highlander and I am currently trying to fix the exact issue you had with the melted housing inside!! Have you had any further luck with replacement or find and better fixes since these comments? Please let me know!!
@@ThePendulumMusic I've had no luck after multiple searches on the internet concerning the rear hatch (not detailed enough in parts breakdown). I still have the LED laying inside after all this time and it is still working.
@@randys6220 Thanks for the reply! I haven't either at this point I think I'm going to go with the LED as you mentioned, could you send the link or model name/# of the one you used if possible? Thanks again!
Arrrrggjjjhjhhh!!!! Mee too! ;-/ sheesh! Who knew! Now show how to replace the gasket and get the lens all sealed up again! ;-)
you must be mad strong, my uncle and i can not twist that bulb 90 degrees :/
It may require a pliers to gently twist it. Be very careful to not crush it, or break it, with the pliers.
What if doesn't turn 90 degrees

Almost removed those two screws
Yeah, Many many people think that is necessary, but that is why I have a CZcams Channel, to help show people. 😀
Thank you!
