Going back much further than the 90s, the worst example of this kind of crap is Oscar Robertson saying that all teams needed to do to stop Steph Curry is to rough him up and guard him full court, and that coaches today just don't understand basketball.
There's arguably more talent and more great players in the league right now than in any other time in NBA history. I feel sorry for these former stars or anyone else who can't just appreciate and enjoy the greatness in front of them. They're missing out.

Yo Rusty, one thing I have noticed, and I have heard damn near everyone not named Mike Korzemba say this, normally the more work you put into videos the worse they seem to do. It makes no sense but I guess attention spans are low as hell. I loved the video, 25 minutes is long but it was necessary.

AI is such a likeable legend because he never seems bitter about the new era of hoops. He always appreciates the new generation of greats. He doesn’t care if you played against him or if you play now. If you’re a killa then you’re a killa.

Yea, he isnt threatened by the new talent. The former greats would still be great in any era. Doesnt mean the newer talents arent great too.

He sort of pulled a KD before KD.
His team blew a 3-1 lead to the Rockets in 1995 and then two years he gets traded to that same team. A big 3 of Olajuwon, Barkley and Drexler.

    I'm feeling you.
Since the 1970s, I'm hearing old heads saying their era was better, they were more fundamentally sound, they were tougher, smarter and weren't playing for the love of the game. Thus, their athletes are also their GOATs.
Why not celebrating every period of time? Each decade I've seen had their great moments and their letdown, their highs and their lows.
About the futile GOAT debate... Why not saying X player dominate Y era... Because 1990s athletes never played against everyone in the NBA history and rules/strategies/tendencies/coaching philosophy are obviously different.
I'm also tired of this saying : X player would score 70 PPG if he played today [Wilt Chamberlain quote from 1997 NBA all-star weekend]...

I don't believe it. Even the greatest scorer ever Wilt Chamberlain wouldn't be able to average 50 PPG today.
It wasn't better back then. It was different.

It's a bit more complex than that. You change one rule and the entire landscape of the league change & your strategies became obsolete. The mid-range game is dead today because of the rules adopted after 2004 : abolition of the illegal defense, etc.
And don't forget what Wilt Chamberlain said to Jordan when they met in 1997... I've seen both players and Wilt Chamberlain was the best I've seen. And I don't Wilt Chamberlain would scored 70 PPG in 1997 like he stated.

Yes, but zone defenses (sagging & roaming players) also deteriorated this facet of the game... Which also explains why fewer centers are posting up right now, but guards started to add this skill on their arc.
You should watch the video I linked or start to binge watch Thinking Basketball Channel.

You're not helping your case. You're saying "it was better when I grew up", "it was bad before and after that period".
You're sounding like the old heads I was referring in the first place. People of my age was pretending their era was better than yours in the 1990s...

Thinking Basketball made a podcast for his Patreon donators. He tackled this "50 PPG myth."
I highly suggest you listen to it.
I should be the one being the old man criticizing your era, not you.
Like I said. The game is different, not worse or better. Strangely, the smartest basketball minds never critize any given era or make assumptions based on their opinions. They always respect EVERY NBA greats and understand the complexity of the game.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Bill Russell named a few guys that could dominate in any era. Those players tresceded their era. Jordan was amongst them... And we both know there are players in today's game that could dominate in any era.

I am glad I do not act like that. The past will never be the past. Enjoy it for what it is and learn to enjoy what is happening now before it is gone. Generational talent is what it is, people are a product of our era. Take what is best from every decade and roll with it. There are Good and bad things from every era. Instead of hating let us remain optimistic and make the best NBA there can be. Do not live in the past, or you may die there. This is coming from someone who is 46.
