- Is this the reason your lawn has suddenly died for no good reason? Or so you think. There's a silent killer at work, decimating your grass from the roots up. Have watered it, fertilised it, and even re-seeded those stubborn brown patches... yet your once-lush lawn looks more like a desert .
There's a silent killer at work, decimating your grass from the roots up. Grubs that live just bennth the surface of your lawn, called leatherjackets
It's a common culprit, often overlooked. In today's video we explore what it is and 3 ways to target it

Best video about leather jackets ever ! Im glad you said to leave black plastic on for 24-48 hours as i would only have left overnight.
Very useful Robbie and does scarifying and raking have any effect on the grubs?
Thanks for putting the plastic sheeting link up. I wasn't looking forward to searching for one.
Your the go to for all my lawn fixes on CZcams big fella. I normally don’t have to ask any questions tho. I don’t have a leather jacket problem and the lawn is in good order but there are small white slugs appearing in good numbers from time to time. Do they damage the lawn and if so how do you get rid of without damaging anything else? Keep er lit👍🏻
Found some leather jackets in my lawn in March while doing some edging. I went full Nematode warfare, already pre-ordered another batch for the Autumn. So far so good, the lawn is not looking too bad. Hopefully i caught them early enough.
Keep an eye on the use by date on the nematodes
Great video. A real eye opener. I now think this is what I have as all indications you described are present. I’m going to try and sweat them out given the time of year. I have quite a big lawn so would it work if I only covered part of the grass at a time or would the leatherjackets just move over to the uncovered grass. Any advice ,greatly appreciated
Do a section at a time, I think it will become apparent if they are moving or not 👍
How has everyone dealt with the cold snap we got couple weeks ago? My lawn is yellow now.
We had a lot of daddy long legs (craneflies) in the Autumn (fall) in the North West of England. I applied nematodes in October and kept the lawn watered for 3 weeks. I tried to time it so the nematodes were active after the eggs have hatched. I haven’t seen much evidence of the lawn suffering from the grubs over the spring, or birds pecking, so it might have worked.
You can also spray the lawn with garlic in the autumn, which will repel the insects (arachnids) to some extent - as long as there are other grassy areas (the neighbours’ lawn 🙂) they will go there to lay their eggs.
Sounds like you got the timing right 👍
I would carry on doing that for at least a couple of years as they tend to attack the same lawn time and time again unfortunately
Hi Robbie, great videos on lawn care. Can you tell me if I apply the nematodes for leatherbacks can I also apply fertiliser to the garden or should that be left for a while?
Feeding your lawn is a great way to help while your lawn is under attack as it will help it, so crack on
Hi Robbie, I put the nematodes, sea glas liquid feed and slow release fertiliser on 4/5 days ago. When I went back to the lawn it was completely covered in holes(like stud marks). What causes this? Is it the nematodes coming to the top or birds picking? Really strange sight
I would imagine it was birds looking for the grubs
Hi Robbie. I've been battling these buggers for five years. I had the chemical treatment done at the start of March and to be honest it's not had much effect. I regret not waiting until the autumn as I understand they're easier to kill when young.
I really want to get it done again. Do you know of the treatment gets registered on a government register or something or can I just get a different company to do it without risking a fine for doing it twice in one year? Thanks
I understand your situation. While I can't recommend treating again so soon, I also know how frustrating these pests can be. Ultimately, it's your decision.
I was hoping to see how many were under the plastic.
Life's little mysteries
Do the nematodes work against chafer grubs as well?
Yes you can get nematodes for chafer grubs
Worth using the nematodes now? I was waiting for autumn, but am worrying about damage before then…
Hold off on the nematodes for now and use the black plastic as much as you can...
Thanks!
Can I do the treatment in June?
I cover it in the video....
Have you got any experience of using Acelerpryn Robbie?
Yes 👍
@@Premier_lawns_official is it effective
We (in stages due to the area) covered about 2/3 of our bowling green and recovered about 800.
Did you find the black plastic worked well?
Nematodes don't work. I've tried them many times on my leatherjacket infested lawn and it's easily the most ineffective method. The only way to guarantee success is to dig them all out in my experience.
They can be very hit and miss, you need the correct conditions for them. But they can be very effective. Though the insecticide I talked about is very effective
Robbie, can we just do a preventative maintenance treatment each year to make sure these leather jackets don't take hold?
Used to be able to do that, not anymore.
Over the last couple years since the insecticide for leather jackets and chafer grubs has been banned, the price of nematodes has gone through the roof
Have you seen the price of ACELEPRYN?
@@Premier_lawns_official at £900 a hectare I can see why only golf courses, bowling greens and football pitches use it
@@Premier_lawns_official guess the comment I made about the price per hectare of that stuff youtube didn't like this morning. But I know why it's only golf courses, football pitches and bowling greens that can afford to use it
@@HootMaRoot Acelepryn is a no brainer IMO. It's expensive upfront, a small bottle is just shy of 1k... That would buy a lot of nematodes
hope i never have to need this knowledge
👌👌👌
I’ve never seen white landscapers😂
Eh?
Nematodes! I went full blown biological warfare on mine a few years back. 👍
Its a royal pain once they attack!
It sure is. I came across your channel early lock down and got into my lawn. Scarified, over sowed and actually got quite into it.
Next spring was “what the heck is this about?” and did the research and commenced bio-warfare and then re-seeded.
I can only think (living in the country) that my work the previous year had created a nursery for Daddy long legs to lay eggs to eat all my nice fresh grass roots! 😂
Ain’t nature “wonderful”! 😂
I’ve used nematodes successfully but you have to follow the instructions to the letter 👍
Yes that can work really well 🙂 Glad you had a positive result 👍
