I would have served my country in the past, but now my country is being destroyed from the inside. I don't mind if it's wars fought over oil and resources, that's just reality. But I don't recognise my country in large parts, the politicians either don't care or they're too stupid.

This wouldn't be my cup of tea, and I'll advise my offspring to not go for it or be influenced by it either!
Unfortunately, time and time again, the gov has proved itself to be self-serving. Just like royalty.
Fighting for one'scountry used to mean something, whereas now I'd rather be fighting to make my country great again, and that means starting afresh from what we have today.
So, nope. Hes having a laugh mate 😂
    Cheers 🇬🇧

Serve whom? Downing Street? The palace? In some mud pit a thousand miles abroad?
Britain is under threat from WITHIN. By the very same people telling you that you have to fight for the security of another bloody country. 🤦

Very easy for that idiot to make pledges, when he is not going to be in power in a few month. He is just trying to appeal to the older voter. As a side note, I would not fight for this country, because of what it has become. I would however fight for family and friends in a local group situation.

Look at mandatory military service in Russia, then tell me how handing human lives over to the government would be different country to country. It isnt, dont delude yourselves with the idea that governments operate differently on principle.

Oh yeah, and obviously governments handle human lives. No question about that. What i meant was giving legal precedent to taking rights away for arbitrary reasons.

Rishi Su-oon-to-bugger-off-to-the-USA doesn't give a toss really. I do think national service for unemployed 18-25 yr olds would give them a sense of purpose as well as learning new skills while getting paid but I also think there will be a lot of push-back from the namby pamby crowd. Lots of questions really... would the newly arrived fighting age men also get called up? would they even fight for King and Country? (not that I think this King deserves any loyalty but the people do.) If the 18/25 yr old is the sole bread winner for his family, would he have to go too? What about the girls? Will they have to go? Realistically, none of this directly affects me but it would my son. 24 right now, a Dad to a 4 yr old... not sure he'd want to go. I also know being in the Army/Navy etc does build character and also teaches valuable life skills. If our country went to war, they really wouldn't have a choice would they, is that it? The reason The Tories want forced enlistment? Is something on the horizon. It's a tough one mate.

No one in the professional military wants to spend their time baby sitting kids who dont want to be there. It is a stupid idea from a stupid and desperate man.

I’m not sure how the volunteering part will work if at uni with a part time job. So many kids these days don’t have parents able to help them financially and they need money to support themselves while there.

National service could be good if it focused on humanitarian aid, in and outside of the country. But sending kids who dont get taught to think for themselves into unnecessary wars would be criminal.

I'm American, but this autoplayed on me and here are my general thoughts:
    1. I think in many cases military service is a noble undertaking even if your nation has serious flaws.
    2. I think conscription is a disgusting form of slavery, often inflicting physical and mental traumas on par with those of sexual slavery, and absolutely immoral.
    3. I think if you can't get enough willing volunteers to fight your war then you deserve to lose. Either your cause was unjust, or your society was too cowardly.

Nobody should be forced into a service of any kind. That is a deprivation of liberty. And national service being mainly a military pursuit is both owrrying and a bad indicator of what is actually most important to our nation. Why not health service or education or care work or an number of better ideas? No. Nobody should be forced into this at all. We are a free country and this would be the first step into relinquishing that right to freedom. What if you have a start in a promising career or education and it has to be disrupted due to this? Give it up? Worh seven days a week for a year? Sunak doesn't know the right way to hold a hammer, until he does it for a year, he shouldn't even be bringing it up.

The only issue with your argument (though I agree with it) is assuming that liberty is a given.
Liberty is a human created concept and as much as it can be given, it can also be taken away.
Too many people in this country take liberty for granted and are unwilling to work to keep it.

I think that it would be a good idea, many youngsters come straight out of school with no idea or a skill set that is valid in the real world and end up on the dole (or UC as they now call it), a year of national service would teach them a bit about living away from parents and having to work for a living.
It would certain ease the demand on the dole system and again I believe that it would do the youngsters a whole lot of good, they will learn more life skills in that year than they every did at school.
Sweden, Norway and Israel all have had national service for their youngsters for many years now and it doesn't seem to have hurt them.
Lots of people seem to be equating the national service with going to war, I suspect that most of the national service people will never get anywhere near action, but used to do the grunt stuff like depot work or delivery goods, freeing up the trained people to deal with any action.
But it will never happen, this country has gone too woke

    • @Lee_Proffit
      @Lee_Proffit Před měsícem +1

@@theurbansurvivalist1141 Yep, total distrust - maybe not the King, as he hasn't really had a chance to prove himself yet, but personally I think he will be OK - But it could be looked on as a years extension to school, the bit where you learn the life skill bit.
I see kids coming out of schools these days with no idea of what they want to do, even those going to Universality, seem to have no idea of what they will do afterwards, and most of them seem to think that the world owes them a living.
For many in my area, it is just a case of going on the dole, same as their parents and grandparents, with no further goals that having the latest cool trainer or phone.
My dad did national service, he hated it, but admitted that it got him a skill set (Driving), travelled to Europe, learnt to live away from his parents, manage his own money and look after himself and all for free.
I served a 5yr apprentice, something that seems to have now been shrunk to a couple of years and even those are getting few and far between. Maybe this NS thing will lead onto further training or skill
