  • The Labour leader has called Rishi Sunak's policy to introduce a form of mandatory national service requiring 18-year-olds to either join the military for 12 months or undertake weekend volunteer work 'desperate', adding that it would create a 'teenage Dad's Army'.

Delivering a keynote speech in West Sussex while campaigning for the general election, Starmer said: 'All this spinning round and round ... it's symbolic of the chaos and the instability'.

That's not how it works, any scheme for people to spend say 12 months or a year in social/community/military service whether compulsory or voluntary scheme (voluntary shouldn't mean unpaid ) means a deferral of other plans for that time. - Many people already take a gap year before Uni or other next step in life volunteering.

I have never voted Labour in my voting life but I am going to this time. The Tories have brought the country and the NHS to its knees. Austerity for the poor but they look after their rich friends be it corporates or individuals. Brexit was farcical and the economy is worse off as a result. Boris apparently wanted to stay in the EU but voted out because he saw it as a chance to become Prime Minister. The COVID and Grenfell disasters were totally mismanaged, plus the fact that the 40% tax bracket is frozen by the Tories until 2028 is scandalous. I would consider leaving this country if they are voted in for another term.

National service ended in Australia in 1973. Clearly it's non-existence has worked brilliantly since then.

Forget national service - it’s a non starter since Blair and the left decimated our forces and public services and our young people were never told “no” in schools
What WOULD be a very sensible idea would be to bring back junior service for 16 year olds - the Junior Leaders Regiments were absolutely superb and were a worthy replacement for sixth form and further education
The concept was wound down in the early 90s and was a huge loss

This is deluded. The younger generations are very consistently told no. No pay rises to meet inflation, no livable 40 hour weeks, no housing, no future.
Soon to be no free healthcare too. Give your head a shake.

I was a labour supporter as i dint like something me of the Tory ways, it PM debacle, even sunak at times, not anymore. Im certain labour will nail the coffin Britain is already in and there wont be any come back from that. 1 for the type of voters they hang on to like the 2mil votes from the bearded and black all covered people. Who have an agenda of their own. And now this.
