THE RAID REDEMPTION MOVIE REACTION | 0:00 - 23:45
THE RAID REDEMPTION MOVIE REVIEW | 23:46 - 25:13
The Raid Redemption Movie Description:
A rookie member of an elite team of commandos, Rama (Iko Uwais) is instructed to hang back while his comrades-in-arms go ahead with their mission to take down a brutal crime lord called Tama (Ray Sahetapy). However, the team's cover is blown, and Tama offers sanctuary to every criminal in his high-rise apartment block in exchange for the cops' heads. Now Rama must take command and lead his remaining team on an ultraviolent charge through the building to complete -- and survive -- the mission.
The Raid (initially intended to be released as Serbuan Maut, lit. The Deadly Raid) is a 2011 Indonesian action film written, directed and edited by the Welsh filmmaker Gareth Evans. The film stars Iko Uwais, who previously worked with Evans in another action film, Merantau, released in 2009. In the film, an elite squad is tasked to infiltrate a high-rise building run by a ruthless drug lord in the slums of Jakarta; among them is Rama (played by Uwais), a rookie member of the team.
After its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), The Raid received positive reviews from critics. The name of the film was changed to The Raid: Redemption in the United States as distributor Sony Pictures Classics could not secure the rights to the title; it also allowed Evans to plan out future titles in the series. The US release of the film features a film score composed by Mike Shinoda and Joseph Trapanese. It was released in the United States on DVD and Blu-ray Disc on 14 August 2012.
A sequel, The Raid 2, was released in 2014. Both films showcase the traditional Indonesian martial art of Pencak Silat, with fight choreography led by Uwais and Yayan Ruhian. A third film was considered but Evans decided not to go forward with the project.

I Wanted To Get Up And Reenact The Fight Scenes.
I do that every time I watch this movie 😆
I like your videos and you see darkman
Yayan Ruhian as mad dog is a beast! He and the main character, Iko Uwais are both experts in the traditional Indonesian martial arts called Pencak Silat. They are the ones who did the fight choreography. This movie still holds up so well after 10yrs. You are right, kudos to the entire team!👏🏻😁
You’ll love the Raid 2. It’s even *more* brutal
I agree you need to check out The Raid 2 also & Yes it's even more brutal!!
What made this movie so good was that all the fighters were NOT actors. They were all professional martial artists and/or stuntmen. It looks so real because it is, they are actually sparring(with choreography of course it's scripted) so they know how to take some ACTUAL hits
This film is an action masterpiece, one of the best martial arts movies ever made. Go ahead and watch The Raid 2, I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
Actually like the Raid 2 even better.
The Raid 2 is absolutely off the chain
Man ive been trynna find Raid 2 without the god awful dubbed version - - it take you out the movie when someone is clearly speaking calmly - then an American voice screams the dialogue.
@@firstlast9846 you might have to just buy the bluray
@@ColombianThunder it’s worth it
Keanu Reeves showed massive respect for Yayan Ruhian, Mad Dog, the small ass kicking dude with the long hair, and what he means to his home country, that he didn't want to have John Wick kill him in John Wick 3. That is why he leaves them alive after their fight near the end of the movie.
Ruhian also did fight choreography for both Raid films, so you have him to thank for the setups. He's also in Raid 2, as a different character of course. Same haircut.
I still hope in John Wick 4 everyone Wick spared will be on his side when he takes on the high table and the one who sits above the table.
@@TheMrsmartass13 that's what I thought will happen too 🤘
Great info 👍
I love the way they made the fighters showed respect for John, letting him get back up etc.
Then John showing them the same respect back bynot killing them
@@TheMrsmartass13 dude, please!
Dude, I first saw this movie when it first came out in theaters by accident. Meant to see a different movie that night but it was sold out. I randomly picked this one cause it was playing around the same time. Had no idea what this movie was about - nothin!
I haven't had a GREAT experience like that in a theater since then. This is the fucking greatest action movie ever.
I saw the trailer an hour before the midnight release, immediately called 5 of my closest friends and we proceeded to have the best night ever. They dubbed me the movie man. I had good taste lol
Great experience bro 🤘🏻
what were you originally going to watch?
@@ProjectMayhem69 21 Jump Street, for the 2nd time. So glad it sold out!
me and 5 of my friends went to go see it in theater and apart from us there was only 2 other people (not together) and when we went to see Part 2 we were the only ones there lol
This movie was the first time I've seen 3 of these guys Iko Uwais (main character), Joe Taslim (guy who got his neck snapped by the short dude), and Yayan Ruhain (the short dude himself). Made me a huge fan of them
I'm not sure how Iko Uwais and Yayan Ruhain made their way into Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but I liked that they were there.
Facts
@@reikun86 probably Disney just wanted to make cameo for them but the thing is they were severely underused in star wars ...
The sequel is just as good, and there is a movie called The Night Comes For Us which has a bunch of the same actors that is even more brutal with its fights.
Man people are sleeping on The Night Comes for Us. Wish there were reactions to that. Headshot is another amazing martial arts flick.
i think the sequel is much better. This is great stuff, but it feels more like a showcase of skills of all the people involved if that makes sense. You know, the director, the actors, stunts etc. The sequel feels more like an actual movie. Headshot on the other hand is pretty bad imo. The choreography there is so over the top its almost comedic, kinda felt like Itchy and Scratchy episode, hahaha. Not a good thing considering how seriously it takes itself.
gotta check that out
And Headshot too.
Until now, I'm not ready for watching The night comes from us 😂
You can't watch The Raid without watching Dredd as well. They are basically the same movie, but one is an Asian approach and one is a Western approach to it, and both are amazing.
U right here..u said it 👏🔥
Yeah. But I actually do remember hearing that their was suppose to be an American version of this movie when it came out. But not sure if it was suppose to be Dredd.
@@Kayoss13212 It wasn't. Dredd was written and the work began on it first, but several delays caused it to be released second.
But they were made both at the same time, but not as copies. Completely independant of each other, just coincidence.
Actually dread inspired by this movie.. The raid redemption Release in 2011 and judge dread release in 2014 cmiiw
The composer was Mike Shinoda who is the rapper/singer from Linkin Park. Everything else you said was spot on fabulous film and you will see those actors around a lot after watching the Raid. You may recognise two of them in John Wick 3
Did not know that
Also one of the actors that work in this movie played Sub-Zero in the recent mortal Kombat film
@@viktorriquelme3735 True though the less said about that film the better. Though he is in the best scenes in the film
'Indie Film" Yes, $1.1 million budget. The director made this movie to fund a script he wrote and really wanted to make, which is slightly adjusted to be the sequel.
The Raid 2 was then made with the budget of $4.5 million (You won't tell).
This is how you make a fight scene. No cgi, no special effect, just pure fight.
This and Raid 2 are probably the best action films of the 21st century.
and any movies with Tony Yaa ...
Saw this at the cinema when it first came out. The whole audience clapped and whooped at the end of the fight scene with the two brothers. The tension throughout was palpable and I think we all needed a release. This is by far the best action/martial arts film ever made, in my opinion.
I left EXHAUSTED. So great!
the fighting style is silat, or pencak silat. and its amazing, Iko Uwais is the main character in this movie. and the fight scenes are all him (no stunt doubles). dude is ridiculously fast
There’s actually a funny story for the (I think) raid 2 where Iko said he saw his punches on screen and asked the director if he sped up the footage, and the director said “no that’s all you!”.
The real masterpiece is The Raid 2. There isn't a better martial arts action movie better than the sequel. Gareth Evans, the director, edits the fight scenes on-sight while filming. Iko Uwais, the main character, and Yayan Ruhian, the Mad Dog, are the principle choreographers in both movies.
I'm STILL blown away every time I watch this movie. The DP is practically fighting right along with the actors because everything in the fights is kept in-frame while the camera is being operated by hand almost constantly. Very rarely a rig or track set up. I got my hand over my mouth every time the camera TILTS MID-FIGHT AND GOES BACK UPRIGHT ALL IN ONE SHOT. constant movement without losing track of the characters.
And on top of that, this movie does something not nearly enough action movies do: it makes the fighting look both badass AND PAAAAINFULL. The fighters can still be impressive and badass as hell while also making you recoil in pain seeing them get hit. Every hit looks like agony, but the fact they keep going so hard is what makes it so captivating. God I love it.
The sequel is my favorite action movie of all time. It definitely inspired things like John Wick. Craziest fight scenes ever
With the junkie in the beginning, as a police officer I can confirm. You have no idea how many times people shit themselves when caught or in stressful situations :)
16:53 Tama instructed both Andi and Mad Dog to bring bodies to him - the Lieutenant being the primary target. Hence the whole "you give me nothing" scene prior to him stabbing Andi's hand. Tama watched as Andi bring Rama to a room but returned empty handed clearly gets Tama alarmed
This movie has the best action camera work ever. That shot dropping through the floor is amazing.
I'll never say one is better than the other, but the Ong-Bak trilogy is just as stunning.
Now you HAVE to watch the sequel. It is one of the greatest sequels, like Terminator and T2. It's bigger, faster, more brutal, and even though it dips into the ridiculous, it is an incredible end to the story.
I swear to got that kitchen fight lasts at least 20 minutes
Between the kitchen scene and that yard scene oh yeah
Damn, Sub Zero got his ass whooped. 😅
"Greatest fight scenes ever", wait til u see part 2 my friend...juuuuuust wait
Saw this film with my family on Christmas Day 2017, and it's pretty impressive! I give
This 10/10. The fight choreography, the action,
The story, The Characters, The Filmmaking Style, it's all beautifully well done. There is even a sequel, The Raid 2, released in 2014. A third film was in production but was cancelled due to budgeting concerns.
This is one of the best action movies I have ever seen, but The Raid 2 is my personal favorite. Looking forward to your reaction 🤙
The director, the lead actor (Iko Uwais), and the actor who played Mad Dog (Yayan Ruhian) choreographed the fights together. My impression is that Ruhian was probably the lead choreographer out of the three, though he and Uwais have choreographed several movies as a team.
Yayan was a martial arts master/teacher, he even have a martial arts school and a stuntman trainer
When i watched Iko latest interview Vindest. He said he did choreography by him self.
Both The Raid movies are so damn fun! The fight scenes are crazy! I saw them both in the theaters and loved every second!
The fight choregrapher was actually Mad Dog, the short guy who the brothers fought. Mad Dog also made appearance in John Wick 3. He and Iko Uwais (this movie's prota) played an uncredited cameo in Star Wars: Force Awakens as gangsters that boarded Millenium Falcon. Another familiar face is of course Joe Taslim (the squad leader Jaka), which nowadays is known for his role as Sub Zero 😊
hands down some of the best fight scenes of any martial arts film out there. both choreography and execution are masterwork.
Probably my favorite action movie I’ve ever seen, if only outdone by its sequel. This is what I compare every action movie I see to. No cookie cutter 3 fight scene garbage (intro fight, mid movie fight, final). This movie said you want action? Have ALL of it, and the sequel follows the same formula. Brutal, real feeling hand to hand combat with GREAT camera angels and no weird cuts for scenes. They wanted you to feel everything. I can’t say enough great things about these films. They are truly masterpieces.
The one that changed how I look martial art action film is actually their previous project : Merantau (2009).
The debut project for Raid director, actors, and team.
That film set the bar for them. The fighting is "softer" and less brutal than Raids but very grounded and beautifully choreographed.
Since watching Merantau, all the flashy moves and wire-fu fighting often seen in martial art film doesn't interest me anymore.
I used it as a benchmark for martial film that came out later until the arrival of Raid 1.
@@rigelark7286 I remember trying to tell everyone I knew about Merantau. Only one of my friends enjoyed it with me. Never got to really gush about that film to anyone though.
The actor in the first one on one fight with Mad Dog is sub zero in mortal combat apparently. Since you watched this, you need to watch the sequel and The Night Comes For Us.
This was directed by one of my countryman Gareth Evans. What annoys me is that he made one of the best martial arts movies ever and barely anyone in Wales knows who he is
my dude, this is one of those rare occasions where the sequel is better. Critics and viewer ratings agree which also never happens.
Wait until you watch the second one! Best action movie ever imo!
So happy you're reacting to this. Can't wait to see you continue with The Raid 2. If you thought the action went hard in this film, 2 raises the stakes heavily.
The Raid is my SHIT...One of the best choreography i've seen. Next, you gotta catch The Raid 2
I feel like everyone needs to see this movie!! Amazing reaction as usual!
🇬🇧Great reaction, the is actually Indonesian and directed by a british director Gareth Evans, great film 😉👍
Indonesia has been releasing some amazing action movies. Raid 2 is freaken amazing as well. Way better story line, more brutal. The fighting style you see here is Indonesian style called Silat. After you watch Raid 2, take a look at The Night Comes For Us. Its in Netflix. Way more brutal than this 2.
Edit: Fighting scenes gets much better when the actors are super skilled in fighting.
I'm so glad you checked out this movie Man this was a fire martial arts film like top tier type of filmmaking.
First saw it it was mind-blowing on how well choreography for the fight scenes were it was just astonishing. Man they kick ass and take names in this movie and it's like brutal as hell and violent.
I can't wait for you to see the next one because that one I'm not going to give you any spoilers but that one somehow tops what the first one was able to accomplish.
Ayy great reaction Mell! Insanely fun movie to watch. Imo, this movie and Raid 2 give the base for movies like John Wick: crazy fights but still grounded enough that it's not completely unbelievable.
Definitely gotta watch Raid 2 if you want more of this!
Gotta check out The Protector staring Tony Jaa. You'll be amazed at the one take fight of the camera following him up the stairs, whooping everybody to rescue his elephants.
Facts
Yes!
I was just about to suggest this, great movie
Tony Jaa is shit
Such a brutal film. Mad dog is an absolute beast.
The joy, the energy, and the commentary from you were top-notch here. Always a joy to watch your videos.
Oh hell yes! I was hoping you'd watch this some day, it blew my mind and put martial arts on a whole new level.
Absolutely loved this movie and was reccomending it to all my friends. 😂
Also love the soundtrack, that was the only thing missing from the amazing Sequel.
Yes! Underrated action film!
Love the reactions Mell! Keep up the amazing content!
You're gonna love The Raid 2. Just don't wait too long to watch it, because it's a direct sequel.
One of the best action movies ever .. Part 2 is awesome as well .
Great review! The Raid is one of my very favorite action movies. Very surprising, especially since Indonesians are such gentle people.
Watching you react to this classic really brings the gruesome hits to life. Damn!
You can see elements of this movie in everything from Dredd to John Wick.
Iko Uwais (main character Rama) and Yayan Ruhian (who play as Mad Dog), both are fight choreographers for this movie.
Let me give you a little bit fun facts about both actors, okay ^^
1. Iko Uwais (Born February 12, 1983), Iko is a martial artist of Pencak Silat (Read : Phen-Chack-See-Lat) and Iko Uwais' grandfather was a silat master who owned a Pencak Silat Martial Art School. Before signing with Gareth Evan's movie project, Iko Uwais was working as a daily operational driver at ESIA, an Indonesian telecom company. He was 28 years old when he play in Rhe Raid redemption (2011)
2. Yayan Ruhian (Born October 19, 1968), Yayan is a professional martial arts instructor and a trainer of an inner breathing technique designed to condition of the body to withstand any impact. Yayan's father is Karate practitioner. Yayan Ruhian instead choose Pencak Silat. Yayan Ruhian started his Pencak Silat Martial Art training since 13 years old. By the mid-2000s Yayan had taught pencak silat in countries such as Belgium, France, and the Netherlands, and also learned several further martial arts techniques, such as Aikido. Btw, Yayan was 43 years old when he play in The Raid Redemption (2011).
Great reaction. Seing how you were holding your neck at every fights scene was so hilarous
iko uwais as rama
for the choreography, iko made it.
Criminally underrated movies just because their not english. Mind blowing choreography and talent
*I Swear to God* good fight scenes have me bobbing my head like I’m listening to music.
Fun fact, this inspired Dredd (2012).
Interesting fact: Mad Dog (the badass short guy with the long hair) was the choreographer for all the fights, he was so talented the director gave him a large part in the movie. He also makes an appearance in the sequel :)
Yayan Ruhian also the only actor who didn't wear any pad because he enjoys getting punch and slammed.
He's a master of Pencak Silat style specializing in breathing techniques to strengthen muscles. Getting punch (full force) is part of his training. 😁💪🔥
Damn. This shit was wild. Have you ever seen any of Tony Jaa's movies? Does all his own stunts and is a beast.
I was looking to see if anyone mentioned him. His early stuff ( to me at least) is nuts. The Raid movies and Tony Jaa stuff are some of the best fight scenes I've ever seen.
Bro thank you for this reaction one of my favorite action films 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Definitely watch the Raid 2 and The night comes for us
Director.. Gareth Edwards, young lad from the Welsh valleys.. changed the movie fighting game with some amazing directing and editing.. you've got to checkout the Raid 2.
May I suggest, Flashpoint.. with the Goat, Donnie Yen you will love it.
I was legit so hyped when I saw this in my feed lol, let's go!
The fighting style the main is using is called Pancak Silat it focuses on elbows and knees
Killing it this week mell!! This movie will make anyone hype giggling and shit.
YA!!! 🤘🏼😠🤘🏼
This, HardCore Henry, and Green Roomare my absolute Fav Action movies! The Raid 2 has some cool Action too! 😁
As others have already said, you have to watch the sequel now. it's bigger in scope and more plot heavy. Dredd is also a must watch as it's basically this movie with a different vision.
Epic! That final fight scene is FIRE!
Love this movie… had the pleasure to watch The Raid 2 back in 2014 with Q&A with Director Gareth Evans and star Iko Uwais🙌… awesome night of great action and insight into making both movies.
“Mad Dog” Yayan Ruhian starred in this and handled the fight choreography… Also, Jaka played by Joe Taslim just played Sub Zero in the new Mortal Kombat movie. Go watch part 2 you won’t be disappointed 👍
The fighting style of both the main character and the bad guy, Mad Dog in this film is called Silat.. one of the most deadliest martial arts ever. Other styles were Judo, boxing and wrestling
This movie is great, another one that captures the feel of this is Dredd. You should watch that if you haven't seen it, really great movie. NOT THE STALLONE one.
Both Dredds are great. Stallone's played to the camp of the 200A.D. future, Karl Urban's worked with the brutality of the setting. Both are legitimate takes on the source material. Urban's is a much better film though.
@@MichaelLlaneza Fair enough but I felt the Stallone one went too much into the camp and his ego wouldn't let him play the role as it's intended (helmet on) I do have a soft spot for the Stallone one as it was entertaining. Like you said though Dredd is the better film.
This movie is awesome. You should watch part 2 and the night comes for us that's on Netflix.
Fun Fact Mad Dog, 15:36 is also the fight choreographer for the movie. So, as your title states " Greatest FIGHT Scenes In History" is thanks to him
U dropping like crazy🐐🐐🐐
One of my favorite movies. Much ❤ as always Mello 😊
The choreographer is the artist himself , especially rama & mad dog 😂
In Kali (escrima) we train with similar techniques & fighting with a Machete/knife or Stick/knife combo is very common
Keep them coming, these actors makes some great action movies
I almost ripped off the armrests of my seat I clenched so hard. I was exhausted after every fight since I held my breath.
The Raid 2 is even better. Glad you liked this one. Keep the great content coming.
“Damn!, none of y’all care about anybody’s throat”
This movie is FIRE!
I knew you would love this one.
"Greatest FIGHT Scenes In History!" YES, until you watch the second one :)
looking forward to the sequel. also going to mention the script was based on dredd. well worth a watch in its own right.
This film has no relation with Dredd.
@@ayusaleha4452 they literally worked off the dredd script.

Glad you could join us man.
Also this movie had the most paramedics on set of any film made
Seriously??
Lolx
Iko said at Vindest interview that Gareth often take a scene more than 10 times. Sometimen 56 times. I can not imagine they repeated scene many times like that. Btw Iko Uwais did all choreography for fighting.
You have to watch the raid 2. That sequel is more brutal than first.
YoungBlood, for me it's all about the "OOO's and AHHH's " you do 🤣😮🤣🤣🤣
Kills me every time !
this caught my attention hella fast the raid redemption is so underrated
AN ACTION MASTERPIECE! Watch and react to The Raid 2 EVEN BETTER!🔥🔥🔥🔥
Sweet! I was the first to request this, I'm pretty sure. Now do Fargo.
The director is a fan of old school Hong Kong action movies. Hence, for more epic fights watch Jackie Chan's "Drunken Master II" (aka "The Legend of Drunken Master") & Jet Li's "Fist of Legend", both came out in 1994. For epic shootouts, check out John Woo's "The Killer" & "Hard Boiled", both starring Chow Yun-fat.
Still til this day , this movie is burning like a raging candle & I love it a lot
The best action in films are the ones that tie into the story and characters; where the characters are reflected in their respective styles. I.E., Daredevil in Netflix took a gritty approach with Matt primarily using more boxing from his Dad(with some graceful acrobatics because of his training from Stick) because of his dad and that repetitive 3-time punch in the face is what I find as his signature: letting the devil out like his character. Fisk in both seasons 1 and 3 fought using grabs, headbutts, and slams because his character likes to take control of a situation. Bullseye fights ranged because of how he handles his problems from a distance. Rama's fight , especially towards the end, reflected a story and the characters. Don't remember the antagonist's name, but the psycho who loved fighting with his hands was brutal and methodical, relishing every blow and taking his time instead of quickly defeating them. He wanted their deaths to be brutal and is so crazy, he ignores his own pain. The fight scene told that story which is what makes it so remarkable
legit the most badass movie ever. even the sequel has some fire action.
Shakey cam is a Hollywood thing used to hide the fact their actors aren't martial artists, you won't see it in Thai, Korean, Hong Kong or Japanese action movies. Quick cuts aren't used very often either. Asian actors like Iko Uwais, Donnie Yen, Tony Jaa (and a few American ones like Scott Adkins and Michael Jai White) are martial artists who can act and do their own stunts, cheap effects like shakey cam and quick cuts aren't necessary and the actors themselves despise them.
Korea use quick cuts a lot too but not as bad as Hollywood most times
@@jalankvng Yeah, maybe I shouldn't have included Korea. Korean action stars are a lot like Hollywood and the film-making is very Hollywood. The actors look good on camera but aren't legit martial artists and only get hand-to-hand training in the military. If they have martial arts training it's usually Tae Kwon Do which doesn't translate well in action scenes.
Check out the Korean re-makes of Tarantino's Old Boy (same title in Korea) and the Liam Neeson movie Taken titled The Man From Nowhere, these standout movies, particularly the axe fight in The Man From Nowhere are why I included Korea. IMHO the Korean versions are better than the originals.
@@ll7868 there are some films where they don’t do quick cuts in Korea. City of Violence, The Man from Nowhere, Midnight Runners, The Divine Fury, and some other films
@@jalankvng And just to add that Korea makes some excellent horror. Been watching their tv show Kingdom about a zombie outbreak. Better than The Walking Dead.
@@ll7868 oh yeah they make really good dramas/ shows. Their horror stuff is so good. I been meaning to watch Kingdom
The best fight scenes are a tie between The Raid & The Night Comes for Us with the same actors 💯👍🏽
The sequel is even more insane.👍🔥🤘🏻
"I need a knife, something sharp." "All I have is this." "Fuck you, look again!" lol
Finally! I was wondering when you were going to pick up another action movie after all those comedies.
12:01 I felt that too . . . Even falling off from the building 😂
Can't wait for you to do some tony jaa, Bruce lee, Brandon Lee, Steven seagal, Jason statham, jet li, and Jackie chan movies. This is a ridiculously good movie. Great choice homie. 🔥🔥🔥🔥
