- What’s the science behind kindness? On this episode, Neil deGrasse Tyson and co-hosts Chuck Nice and Gary O’Reilly discover the science hidden in the hit Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso with its creators Jason Sudeikis & Brendan Hunt and neuroscientist Heather Berlin. Is it better to give than it is to receive?
How do we find common ground with others? We get into Gary’s experiences in professional soccer and how the character of Ted Lasso came to be. Do good comedians have to understand the psychology of their audience? Is it true that nice guys always finish last? We break down what it takes to design a character that is kind. Was Gary a mean player or a nice player on the pitch?
What is leadership? Learn how the Ted Lasso team defines good leadership and how they approach toxic masculinity and incorporating therapy into the show. Is Ted Lasso the personification of magic mushrooms? We discuss drugs, sports therapy, and the “suck it up” generation. What is it like now that athletes are able to prioritize their mental health?
Next, we bring on Heather Berlin to offer her scientific take. What happens to the brain when it’s involved in an act of kindness? Is it actually better to give than it is to receive? Is there such a thing as toxic positivity? Is being happy all the time really the goal? Find out how your sweat can impact responses in others and how the amygdala impacts heroic acts. What does Heather make of their claim that Ted is the personification of mushrooms? We discuss the treatment uses of psilocybin and how it works to treat depression and anxiety. And finally, does the brain of a good leader look different?

As a person stuck in another country and away from my son, Ted Lasso saved me during a rough patch in 2020, early 2021.
Never would’ve imagined this collab happening but I’m glad it exists.
I agree.

Ted Lasso is so pure and full of joy. It is one of the best shows airing today. Never fails to make me laugh and happy!

Good point, this is the only show to remind me of the Andy Griffith show from from the 1960’s
Ted Lasso is the most life-affirming and heartwarming comedy to appear for years. Not in a twee way, either. Many of the characters have negative traits, but we see them in the round -- brilliant writing, particularly characters like Jamie, Roy and Nate -- their story arcs come full circle throughout the three series.
I’ve read that there’s only going to be one more season of Ted Lasso. Three is not enough. Society needs shows like this to show that kindness and integrity are still relevant. IMHO
Really? No, they can't....
I’d rather it ended strong than getting weaker by the season as many other great series have
@@Lora-G That's true...I only recently binged both seasons, so it's like a new show for me. The cast and show itself is so well written selfishly I'd like it to continue for as long as possible.:)
I feel that this episode missed the message of Ted’s leadership style. It is not the duality of dominance or mentorship. Ted elevates individuals, not by example or discipline but by caring about them individually and seeing their worth and propelling them upward to their best self.
Both - Lasso propels people through his example. Model the behavior or basic tenet of leadership study, as you may know.
"You can`t tickle yourself" This statement is so close to understanding empathy, as has ever been said.
My favourite podcast meets my favourite TV show. If CZcams had a 'Super Like' button, I would smash it. Twice.
I literally didn't know about this show until now. I'm definitely going to binge this show now. Thanks!
You won't be disappointed.
Had never heard of Ted Lasso, but that didn't stop me from smiling and laughing aloud throughout this episode. StarTalk has the best co-hosts and guests. Loving it.
Did you watch it yet?
Do yourself a favor and watch it. It's such a great show.
@@zachattack2834, I came here to say exactly that!
I needed this. Thanks Neil and Ted. Let's go AFC Richmond.
4:22 this Brian guy is hilarious 😂 “Hey Brian get your chaps on!”
Best character development in a show's first season I've ever seen.
I'm only now starting to realize that Sudeikis isn't just a comedian. Dude's a thinker. I hadn't watched any interviews, really ever, until after the next-to-last episode of season 3 and hearing that it's going to be the end. Of the few that I've watched, this has been the best.
And Brendan Hunt's crib! Nice place, total Jackie Treehorn vibe, "completely unspoiled." lol
Sudeikis, on the other hand... That office of his looks like a basement closet. lol
It was a different vibe seeing them in their own element, their home turf, and not on some set in a more formal environment, and with great questions and contributions from everyone. Good show!
Not gunna lie, as soon as I see Chuck and he throws out a one liner in his intro, I know it’s going to be a good show. Im sad when he is not involved with an episode
Its a great show. Just imagine how strange it is when watching your neighbourhood on Apple TV and looking out the window and seeing the next season being filmed.
Jason Sudeikis for president. 🎉 he would have my vote any day.
Too nice
Startalk has hit a new level of awesomeness
I love how Jason said he had a brief stint on SNL…it was from 2005-2013 😂😮
My favorite show at this time using kindness as an example to teach.... our society is in terible needs... for that
i am greatly appreciate all the actors writers all people to make it happened i using quotes from the show
Is hilarious and emotional and feels like real life❤❤❤🙏
Anyone ever see the 'Maine Justice' skits from SNL?
Ted reminds me of myself, when as a teenager I had a sunny outlook on life and people, before life beat all of that out of me. I find that I'm moving back towards that mindset. It's like the saying Be The Change You Want To See In The World. We could all use a little more kindness to ourselves than others.
Love this interview. Thank you so much for bringing this conversation to us. What a delight!
I love your show, watching every upload on the spot BUT pls you must upscale the mic quality, sometimes its really bad .
On one of the times I did mushrooms, I pretty much experienced full ego death.
During the trip I slowly floated up from the earth and out into space (in real time this lasted about a couple of minutes, but might have been a split second). I kept on floating out into space, and totally accepted the idea of my own death. I was given quite a wide angle look at the universe, and had the sensation of my 'ego/consciousness' expanding to encompass it all. Ever since that moment I have been motivated purely by helping other people as a real extension of myself.
What I do, and my motivations aside, I really did float out into the dark universe on mushrooms, and there wasn't any kind of god voice telling me anything, or any sensation that there was a plan, or an architect...
but the universe is a real chatterbox.
Just watched the first 2 seasons and everything you covered is exactly what I’ve been talking through with my wife and kids. Thank you for the conversations and insight.
never heard of ted lasso but this episode is still great. crazy how im so tuned in and not lost i feel like i need to go see it now hahaha
One day I saw a comedy show listed and just watched it, before bed, no expectations at all, it was called Ted Lasso... what a shocking beatiful surprise, THANK YOU! it's the most inspiring show I've ever watched at the most perfect time. And I got say that, after watching this interview, I wonder if Jason's point of respecting the audience's intelligence is what sets this apart. I'm not a native English speaker and I clearly have my own cultural background, but as he also says, I can watch the show and think, we call that differently but we got that too, and understand many of the cultural references throughout the show even when they are not mine, which at the end of the day just help us all grow as a person. I'm tired of the typical hollywood show where things are explained like if we were all toodlers, or in my case, translations, or more precisely translation companies, sometimes using completely different phrases so that we "can understand" what the characters are talking about... thanks again Jason and team for making such a beatiful show, this was life changing.
Im so glad this was talked about. My friend and I call this show anti-virus. Its the good medicine for the soul. And listening to this discussion also had the same effect
ALWAYS like your podcasts . . .Great exchanges!
Jason 'You know' Sudeikis
I wish these episodes were longer.
Right ! !
As soon as I'm about to go to sleep... Bam ! Episode ends and the next add wakes me back up for another hour 😂
The show we all need breaking down the show we all need!
Ted Lasso as a topic for Neil deGrasse Tyson is like cookies and cream: two great tastes that taste great together!
Every now and then I actually miss broadcast television - lots of good shows now segregated into myriad streaming services.
I heard Disney+ is bringing that "feeling" back by having multiple channels of live TV so you don't have to pick and choose anymore. I found it amusing that the future of streaming television is the way it always was.
torrents have them all :P
What a fantastic episode! Thank you!
Absolutely love the scientific contribution to the video at the end. Good job miss.
8 minutes since upload finally I get here somewhat on time. Also everyone always says hi to Chuck so hi Neil!
Great entertaining intelligent conversation.
Wow this is amazing that a lot of the show originally was improv . They are talented!
best non toxic show on earth 💯 men should wear short shorts with no shame, btw
Christmas came early in the form of Heather Berlin! Now if we could only get Geek-in-Chief Dr. Charles Liu who’s been absent for awhile
not even 5 min in and this ep is already LIT
Wish i could watch the show.
I love Ted Lasso!!
My two favourite shows ❤️✌🏼
Love and respect , you my hero 🦾 thank you sir
Startalk reacting with Ted Lasso exudes positive energy, specifically positrons galore.
Keep Looking Up Ppl!! 🌎
I wish he's show was more accessible to everyone, what's Apple TV?? Lol Netflix and tubi and normal TV are wonderful places to air stuff to lol, the show lagit sounds super awesome and something I'd absolutely LOVE and I look forward to seeing it at some point.
Also LOVE entire video and all the subject manner, basic stuff people should know but not enough do, emotional iQ is equally if not a bit more then book smarts, also why I like Neil and Chuck so much, smart, empathetic guys trying to spread knowledge and make the world a better place. I LOVE them and all of these videos, I hope you always find joy in filming these so we always have more to watch lol😊
Subject matter*** I'm sorry I just had to let you know
Funny you mentioned David Brent, because, to me, the perfect "pendant" to Ted Lasso is Tony Johnson from After life.
Being kind is the way to go then, no question about it
I love this guy in the movies Horrible Boss 💯😎
Yeah, or "We're the Millers" great comedy
Neither day nor happiness could be perceived without darkness or pain though the might eternally exist.
Man this show should be mandatory on schools
Wow, Jason Sudeikis! This is huge
Guided discovery is used in therapy also😊
Dopamine is more about the "win," the get. Serotonin is more about the giving. Dopamine exhausts neurons, so we build tolerance. Serotonin is a neural relaxer, so it's sustainable. :D
Holy Cow ! Found an old query in my notes. "What is more likely to be infinite ? Time ....or space."
Always loving your videos! Thanks for helping us to learn so much! Yes! Neuroscience! Here’s an idea for a future episode: How about a look at the science of mindfulness meditation and the parallels between quantum theory and ancient teachings?
Thank Neil that was another wonder full program! pcb
Read about a quantum entangled tardigrade. Wanna know more about it. Could you please do an episode on this?
Fantastic!
I've heard great things about the show. Too bad don't have access to the walled garden to watch it.
47:00 she just broke it down to the balance like duality. cant have one without the other. too the extreme on any side is toxic but a balance of the two is healthy. i used to think my axiety was a curse and wanted it to go away completly i didnt think about how a part of me wouldnt function properly without a bit of it. so i just need to balance it not ignore or destroy it. i need it. this is blowing my brain up.
Gary........ love my father
omg take a shot every time u hear "You know"
Love y'all!
Perhaps I misunderstood but I dont like the anti medication angle but I love listening to chuck and neil so keep at it guys. :)
I've lost my biggest and best source of dopamine, and have no way to get him to give me a second chance (how does one not earn a second chance after 38½ years of marriage?), or ever replace him. So... I'm in a very dark place, right now. It's not a good feeling. This is worse than I could ever have dreamed of happening.
I couldn't ever have pictured him just... tossing 40 years of love in the dumpster, setting it on fire, and walking away. He took away my soulmate, my best friend, and my ability to ever trust anyone again, along with everything else I lost.
And Chuck, the "that's marriage" line felt like a dagger to what's left of my heart.
I'm so sorry 😞
Never giving up on yourself is the only thing you need to take to the grave
Any comedy will always be a dagger in the heart to someone, unfortunately.
Be STRONG and remember : DON’T QUIT FIVE MINUTES BEFORE THE MIRACLE” you ARE loved even when it seems like it’s too dark to live. Please believe in a worth that is a hidden jewel in your heart🙏🏽
Neil deGrasse Tyson for President!
43:00 gary asking all the right questions back to back woo. got me thinking
Would be awesome to hear you talk about the science in Loki Disney plus show.
The Natural response of all in life, to happines vs unger….is why we chose happines
You in Maine now boii
Pfpf🤣😂 👍🏾
Yeahhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!! *
*rock music plays*
@Neil, hey could you do an AMA? :D
Yes! Get chronic pain. Positivity does fall apart. You can watch it go.
NEUROSCIENCE AND SOCCER = A PLUS
Linkėjimai J.Sudeikis and all other iš Lietuvos :)
Freakin superb
The process Gary mentioned towards the end is how teaching should be allowed to work, especially in math and sciences, however, teachers are not allowed to teach that way, parents, students, and administrators do not like that process.
Chuck........ love u son
‘Ignorant but arrogant’ is a phrase we Malaysians use a lot.
From the kindness and, to express gratitude for sharing. Actually I’m nominating Mr. Neil deGrasse Tyson the Astrophysicist of the year!! 👏👏👏😂🙂👍
Sincerely & ty gentleman if I may say Mr. Chuck Nice Comedian of the year!!! Hurray!!!
Brother Boo 👻
TED LASSO ❣️👍🏼❣️
chuck got gary ready to jump out his seat hahaha
Is this Startalk.
Or Mike & The Mad Dog?
Interesting - but this strikes me more as an appropriate subject for Shankar Vedantam's brilliant NPR podcast / radio show - Hidden Brain.
1:45 - I think they crossed paths recording for ''Scooby Doo''.
3:50 I GUESS CHUCK WAS NOT AROUND FOR THE " I BELIEVE WE WILL WIN "
Is it like glitching out on the video for anyone else or... What.
Shout out the US women's soccer team!!
If I may share this gentleman & this is to see each of ourselves that which each of us
Can embrace. Here it is
Jonny Queto can strike every one of us out . 😂
⚾️ 💨 another way to look at this for context
We’re in the batters box
To play some Harlem baseball ya know common fun. To bat
However Jonny is on the the mound and, will strike us out.
🤷♂️ ps: he throws very fast. This happened when you were thinking he was pitching. 😂👍
Brother Boo 👻
Everyone strikes out the 1’st time. Usually. This creates hero’s!!!
29:09 wait, why don't they help each other up anymore? I didn't realize they weren't doing that anymore.
Hello, Neil!
Do you think you could talk about the "black knight satellite" and could you mention if is true or false?
I would like to know if this thing really exists or not.
Jason baby, that newsie hat😂
I love Chuck and Gary in any episode. Smooch to Neil too of course. Startalk almost makes up for all the $+ on media.
Satisfaction...it grows oooooh....😜😂🕶😎
Rendlesham incident Any facts??
