- What are Van der Waals forces? On this episode, Neil deGrasse Tyson and co-hosts Chuck Nice and Gary O’Reilly explore the fascinating world of surfaces, biomimicry, and Formula 1 with physicist and author of Sticky: The Science of Surfaces, Laurie Winkless.
What’s up with gecko feet? We break down how geckos defy gravity and the hierarchical structure of their lamellae that makes them so sticky. How close do gecko’s feet get to the surface they’re on? We explain Van der Waals interactions and the groundbreaking applications of gecko biomimicry for us humans.
What does “laying down rubber” mean? Learn about the forces at play on Formula 1 tires. What do they have in common with gecko feet? Discover tribology and the principles of friction. How do rubber tires work? Is there a way to make them faster? How does a tire make contact with the road? We discuss rain tires and new materials like carbon carbon.
We also explore the physics of other special surfaces. Can we make a boat that never gets wet? Find out about the Salvinia fern and how its helping scientists create the ultimate low friction coating. How do golf balls reduce friction in the air? Is the air also sticky? You’ll also learn about how Sharks reduce drag using their dermal denticles. All that, plus, how can Chuck become spiderman?

Did you have any idea Geckos could be so interesting?
Yes i find it cool how their feet use van der waals forces to stick to things
If the boat never gets wet would it have get barnicles and algae on the bottom still or would that not be a problem because no water?
Also geckos were already amazing with their regenerative abilities.
Absolutely especially
Water 💧 itself
To say for a topic.
☝️😁💧 A drop of water 💧 can be studied for a lifetime and, there still would be questions. 😂 THAT IS AWESOME. & GECKOS 🦎 TOO!!! ☺️😂

StarTalk is the only science pod cast channel that starts and ends with a smile on my face for every video.
IKR!
That’s a good sign
There was a lot of tangents in this episode. Learned a lot! And Laurie Winkless amazingly answered every question they came up with! She should definitely come back!! 🙂
We're with you! We'd love to have her back.
I love listening to Laurie Winkless explain how things work. She has a great way of explaining that I can understand, has a great sense of humor and her accent is a bonus.
Agreed! She’s awesome and I love her accent. They should definitely have her back on in a future episode.
You really see how much Laurie Winkless loves what she talks about, really amazing episode. So easy and enjoyable to listen, understand and follow up. Also love all the episodes with Gary O'Reilly, such a sympathic human.
Lovers of a subject are its best teachers.
Three days in a row, binge watching every video. I cant get enough of this📖 Neil and chuck are the best combo for this❤️❤️❤️
Those are rookie numbers gotta get your count up lol.
You must be new. Here at star talk the audience watches everyday while they smoke. It’s a well known fact

I love how the entire team has become smarter as the years go by with Neil's influence. Way to keep on learning.
Right?! Lord Chuck must be working on his doctorate by now!
Specially Lord Chuck Nice , the way he articulates his thoughts is so much thought through you would think he has masters in Linguistics.
I’ve been following this channel for quite a while and I regard Sir Neil deGrasse Tyson as my greatest teacher in life. But I have to say Chuck Nice, my guy, you show an amazing growth. It just goes to show, you’re infected by those you hang around. The intelligent questions you ask, your crispy sharp reactions and well timed jokes…my deepest respect to you!
Thanx for all the lessons and helping us see the magic of the universe in the most tiny things!
By the way, as a kid in West Africa, I used to be amazed at the grip of a gecko so this episode was extra special. Lil side note: me and my friends used to go on gecko and salamander hunt at night. We were quite cruel cuz we used to be amazed by the tails of these animals. Don’t judge me, I was a bad kid at 8😜
Man, I had a rough day and have been looking forward to listening to this after work, and the first segment ab geckos turned my mood around. I love this podcast so much. Thank you StarTalk crew! 🙏
Just got Ms. Winkless' book on Audible. I like the way she teaches.
AHHH!!! I actually STUDIED geckos in college in a course on biological design. We actually made mock-adhesives based on the physical structure of gecko feet.
Very cool!!! 😃
Laurie Winless was an absolutely fantastic guest and super questions from everyone. I have always wondered if when painting the bottom surface of a boat with a paint that created very small but measurable dimples like a golf ball, how that would affect the flow of water along the surface. Also wondered if you could have the surface of say a submarine exude a thin layer of water how that would affect its slickness and speed. Thank you all for a wonderful Friday evening.
Amazing show. Singing a few bars of the Speed Racer car toon theme song was icing on the cake. Tremendous chemistry with all four of you. ❤️
What an amazing woman Laurie is! She's fantastic I hope you guys bring her back what a great episode 👏 so interesting, startalk has been my obsession thank you Neil and Chuck, and Gary, you guys make this entertaining while being informative
This was right from the gecko, but Laurie's DON'T PANIC pendant really tipped the scales. 😁
don't forget your towel!
Yay more Neil
Couldn’t agree more😤
As the proud human of 4 crested geckos, nothing better than watching them hanging around in every which way, like they defy gravity! They're amazing creatures!
As always, science is AMAZING!!!👑
Laurie is a unique double threat: smart AND likeable
I remember when I was into rowing (In my teenage years) and the tech staff in my club explained me they used to scratch the boat surface with sandpaper of a certain size so that air bubbles would stuck to the boat’s surface. We are talking 20 years ago
Interesting. I'm realizing a satin finish on a guitar neck is smoother and more slippery to our skin in a similar way.
42! I so love Laurie Winkless's Necklace. Fantastic show folks. Thank you all for the education and please keep it up.
I like the Chuck and Gary combo
Grear episode as always. Gary shined like never before. Keep it up!
The Hitchhiker's reference is cool.
Yeah but pointing it out is not.
🤫🤫🤫🤫🤫
What a real nice episode. Laurie was a delight, as Neil said. About the sharks, though Chuck, not all sharks have to keep moving to breathe. I've seen sharks chilling out, laying in the sand at the bottom of aquariums. Examples are the nurse and tiger sharks.
Thank God another video
Thank Niel instead. God had nothing to do with it.
@@citypavement oh okay if you want to think like that then its all good too 👍
I don't have a choice.
I absolutely love the childlike giddiness that they all have for learning and the pure joy they have at discovering the amazing ness of geckos!
Absolutely amazing episode!!! One of my favorites ever
I'd love to see another one with her, I blown away how she seems to know about so many different topics
The part auf F1 was so exciting as a big F1 fan
Speed racer... talk about a blast from the past. Great episode, will definitely order a Sticky copy 👍
I want to like this a thousand times!! Great episode Dr Tyson!! Geckos…who knew they could be so fascinating?! I’m absolutely obsessed with them now!!! Please bring Laurie back for more explainers!! She was fantastic!
Please make it daily!!!! ❤️ This show is like drugs to me
my favorite thing to hear... @32:50 'I'm not sure. So I won't pretend to know"
Still catching up here. This was a fun episode again. Learned a lot today, thanks.
This is my FAVORITE episode
As someone who wasn’t interested in science before my husband introduced me, this is SO interesting. I went into a deep dive of Gecko toes!!! Thank you for explaining so well! I can’t wait to learn more!!!
Enjoyed this episode but the best bit for me is the 'gecko doing jazz hands' 😂😂now that is something I'd like to see 👋👋
Greetings from northen Sweden and a long time subscriber.
I have a crested gecko and he does not like wet or moist glass. If I spray water in his tank (terrarium) and he moves over that surface he just slides over the glass or even falls off. Crested geckos, according to my son are the ones that does not grow their tails back if they loose it.
Top notch. One of the most interesting episodes.
If I could do it all over, I would definitely try to get into material sciences, it's always so fascinating
Amazing talk, wish it lasted longer
So Gekkos are a webshooter away from being Spider-Man. This was fascinating and I LOVE the accent. Now I'm off to look up carbon carbon.
Always great to see Lord Nice!
Isn't
I'm only 1/3 the way through, but what a fun episode!!!!!!
Nature gets cooler every time I watch one of these videos
Let the Force be with you.

(Thank you for spreading cosmic curiosity, love these videos.)
I love learning new things, always thought geckos had suction cup toes, who knew that they had hairy toes...
Great host, great jokes, Gary also has had a bigger role lately. Excellent episode! 😀
As a tribologist, I think its about time you covered us. :)
Chuck you are more important to this show than you know. You are far from the waterboy my friend.
Someone however needs to be more active in the comments section. I vote you chuck
Outstanding topic as anticipated, as a fan of reptiles I don't recall Nat Geo ever discussing this topic. Allot to process well done Staff and Crew
Bless up from Brooklyn NY
SPORTS EDITION ROCKS #LourieWinkler #LordNice #Dr.Tyson #GaryO
Neil, could you provide Portuguese subtitles on your channel! thanks
I love your show!!
Chuck plays end, guard and tackle. Sits at the end of the bench, guards the water and tackles anyone who comes near it. Doh!
Never thought I would be fascinated by Science this much ...would've finished nursing school ❤
Surprisingly entertaining episode
Brilliantly Done!
Gary knowing that little tidbit about why cartoon characters usually have 4 fingers instead of 5 is a deep cut. I learned that in animation school.
Awesome guest, cheers Laurie
Laurie is amazing. Never thought I would learn so much
Such an interesting topic. The explanation of capillary action of our moist skin on surfaces explains why a satin finish on a guitar neck is smoother "faster" than a gloss finish.
Love this automotive themed episode. also drag racing has VHT track spray which enhances adhesion of tires the road.
I didn't wanna watch this, but after doing so..as usual...no regrets..I learned alot today
This is just getting better amd better aaaallllll the time this podcast...this is just out of this world good wow...kudos guys🙌🙌🙌🙌🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻
Great show. 👍
Can we get you back in the office together? I miss those episodes
Mr. Tyson can you make a video about the science of bubbles. How they form to be spheres etc?
Great episode
Great video
would a plane with a golf ball dimple pattern on its surface have less friction and therefore not heat so much?
I had the same question. Anybody?
If the plane is going to 360° the entire time it's in the air
It would be interesting to hear about sails and modern fabrics used for sails.
Hi from New Zealand.
You should also bring back that volcano expert (the Kiwi one)... well, both volcano experts you have are great.
During the first year of my physics degree I learned about Gekos using van der waals forces to stick to the walls. When I tell people they seem mainly unaffected by it, or try to retort with something about a hippo or some other trivial thing. :) I like being rich.
Chuck really showed out on this one… he dropped the act and proved he’s got a grasp on practical concepts that seemed to rival even Neil.
Classic Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy reference luv it
Some of these topics don’t initially sound interesting to me, but I am always pleasantly surprised.
Mannnnnnnnnnnn, I'm so glad I found this channel!
My Irish heritage (county Cork) resonates with her big time. Love Irish-accented English
One of the best videos yet. Hung on every word spoken. lol
I would as well love to hear a 2 hour episode on particle density in soace as you travel further away from our perfect pond environment 👽
Amazing!
15:38 Thanks Neil I feel very special
Laurie is delightful - very entertaining to listen to. Fascinating topic - materials science and surfaces is one of my favorites. Don’t Panic - The answer is 42. :-)
Get a grip 😂😂😂 Absolutely love this show 💙
Great job once again. If y'all ever get a chance can y'all do a video on how the science of the force works in StarWars?
Lol that's not science.
@@citypavement hahaha bahahaha fact's
I love you guys a whole lot.
Yet another fun vid. Do have to comment the "Don't Panic" necklace/medallion is missing the exclamation! do not get geckos toe to toe.
They spray traction compound on the track for better traction in some racing programs. Like glue for lack of a long drawn out explanation
I think it's one reason drag racers do a huge burnout before beginning. The race to the finish line is to gain traction by heating up the tires and making them more pliable.
Much love to all you superheroes 🙏🙏🙏 Neil, Chuck an Gary!!! I was just thinking of something… As a scientist…Is bringing up some topic and then concluding with “but what is happening on a molecular level” the same as a Comedian telling a fart joke or a hacky airplane joke? This is not meant to hurt anyone’s feelings I’m just observing how similar it may be 🤣🙏🙏🙏 much love to all of you and I respect and admire all of you and those who continue to bring and as well, like Sir Bill Nye and Janna and Negin, have brought education and good times to the pod and people!!! 🙏🙏🙏🍷🍷🍷 thank you to the people making this show happen!!! LONG LIVE STARTALK!!! 🤓
The algorithm has so much influence it’s hard to find this stuff
I think Chuck fell in love with this guest today , I've never seem him act like this b4 😂
it's adorable how neil thinks chuck is the most hilarious guy in the world. they must be really good friends
I love how much she knows about F1 :D
Yay New Zealand 🇳🇿
This would have been the perfect video for the guests to have a few images that they had ready to share with everyone else including the audience and y'all could have had those images like edited into the video in post
The best part of this is that 10 yr old me played a superhero tabletop rpg where he was a gecko version of Spiderman. ... Good times
“She could make watching paint dry interesting.” _Spends 20 minutes on gecko feet._ Damn, Gary. Sorry I doubted your description. 😅
Gotta love that necklace
Fun fact, back in the early to mid 2000s, the Geico Gekko voice was done by scottish actor and martial artist Ray Park!
What a delight, she is my 2nd favorite after Jana Levin.
Of course Jana is "BAE"
Best Astrophysics Expert 🤣
