  • @andyb204

    I bought this for my a6700 to use for landscape and street/travel photography. My son steals it occasionally to use on his a7iv. He records video at 4k 60fps, which is a crop sensor mode on the a7iv, so the lens is great for that. What I found is this is a superb landscape lens. There are some minor issues when the light fades, but this can normally be compensated by increasing shutter time - tripods are useful things. The interesting thing is I often increase the shutter time anyway for many of my landscape photos, because I want that effect on the water and clouds. I almost never go faster than f5.6, normally f8-f11 to compensate for that, and of course that also keeps the whole frame in focus. If you like Astro pics with lots of white lines (yeah honestly, I was going for the star trail look on all my milky way photos) then it works for that too. I'm not an Astro photographer, I'm not a portrait photographer, and I have faster lenses for taking photos in low light. So this lens has turned out to be perfect for what I use it for. It's sharp, easy to use and is wide to awesomely wide.

    Amazing review. I really wish Sony would care more about APSC. Seems like there is a huge gap between the a6600/zv-e10 and the fx30. They do not really have an equivalent of what is basically a7c/zv-e1 in the Super35 and it's killing me.

    You are my main source for this information for the last year and a half... I'm shooting gatherings for 6 people around a table and the closeups are extremely cool shot with f1.8. However, I need to have a wide shot that catches them all and can't seem to nail it. Tried the ZV-e10 kit lens on 16, tried some 18mm lenses... It's not very lit - it's perfect for the 1.8s. I need everything to be in focus for the wide shot, so I need a lens that can manage the not super bright wide shot, but still keep a lot in focus. I was looking at this lens because of the F4 and the 10mm, but you say it's bad in low light, so not sure if I should give it a try.

    • @kistovisback
      @kistovisback Před 2 lety

      nope, focus breathing only occurs (to whatever degree that lens suffers from it) during the act of focusing, either automatically or manually. If you turn the AF off and you also don't change focus manually during filming, but instead set it once and leave it like that, there won't be any focus breathing

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis

    Not taking cost into consideration - purely looking/comparing based on the quality of video image and ability, which of the two would you suggest (and if able, why)?
    I'll be using these on the Sony ZVE10, and strictly for video - I have a Canon 5d3 with great lenses that I will continue to use for photography.
    So, I'm mainly concerned with video (for CZcams):
    - Tamron 11-20mm f2.8
    - Sony 10-20mm f4
    I will mainly be doing counter-top videos (crafts & how to), but not exclusively;
    I will do some outdoor filming of bike races - meaning I'm filming others on their bikes, preferably by hand, but I can do a tripod or gimbal if needed.

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  Před rokem

      I would do the Tamron because of the 2.8 of light. That can make a really big difference.The 10-20 is smaller, lighter and better for gimbals, but the f4 will make it difficult at times to film inside

I have a GoPro hero 9, but I now realize that I will not be able to separate the subject from background in either indoor or outdoor shots. Just discovered bokeh:) I am on a budget, but thinking about the EV-10. Am I looking for an impossible lens? By the way, the wall behind me in the studio is only about 6 feet away, can't change that, is bokeh possible in that situation?

    Great review as always!, I was looking to buy an ultrawide zoom lens for my ZV e10, the Tamron 11-20mm was my first choice... but the size, weight, extra 1mm, internal zoom, faster AF, better control of focus breathing, the extra buttons, better compatibility, the "G" image quality and why not... the power zoom of the Sony 10-20mm made me forget about the f2.8 of the Tamron... i think i'm sold. I'll wait for the comparison video anyway to be sure before spending 850€.
    Btw, I also have the crane M3, its just better to get a gimbal tha can handel not only the camera and lens, but have room for a mic, small light or any other small accessory and is not sufering like the Crane M2 that i had. Spend the extra 100€ on the M3, it's worht it for an APSC system. Right now i'm using it with the ZV-e10 with the flip screen out mounted on a quick release plate, sigma 18-50mm, Rode Wireless GO II and it goes smooooth. Great thing is you can balance once at 35mm and then zoom in and out without having to rebalanced it again, it handles it like a champ.
    Thanks Mark, keep it up! no need to sleep :D

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  Před 2 lety +3

      oh yeah - that M3 is the best and I prefer it. But these lenses are so small that I can flip out the screen, use an Nd filer and put a wireless pack on and still balance it. it’s such an insanely small setup that it’s fun. The M3 is much more useful though for many things. especially the scroll wheel to do quick roll axis adjustments

    From what I’ve seen so far, there’s something “off” about this lens. Can’t quite put my finger on it, but as a Tamron 11-20 user, the images just seem soft, bland and super-distorted. Curious to see still image comparisons between the two.

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  Před 2 lety +2

      Yeah - it is likely because the Lightroom profile hasn’t been completed. So what you are seeing from reviewers are either jpegs or images they “corrected” themselves (which is virtually impossible with how much distortion this lens has in raw). So it’ll be tough to judge until the profile exists. However, I do feel like the Tamron acts better as a photography lens. The 2.8 makes a huge difference, and that bigger glass seems to make the images pop more.

      ha - yeah - I can see how it would be confusing. In the 15 mm - that is an APS-C lens - so the A7IV is in crop mode (something it does when connected to an APS-C lens) so that would make the focal length about 22.5mm (15mm x 1.5 times crop). Then i applied the stabilization crop which is about 10 percent - making it about 25mm and I moved the camera a bit closer to me. Voila!!

    My honest opinion: if people are considering wide angle F4 and above lens for vlogging (or maybe even photo), they'd be better of using an iphone/pixel. At this point, the background blur/separation is what's making the biggest difference between apsc and phones. Without it being obvious, there's almost no advantage in using apsc.

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  Před 2 lety +8

      Background blur is not the only reason vlogs look on cameras - the larger sensor captures so much more data - the difference is very big when I switch to my iPhone 13 pro and my ZV-E10 at any F-stop. I have some vids comparing the iphone on the channel if you'd like to check them out. Many Hollywood films have been shot on a APS-C sensor at f4 or f6. But I encourage you to do some tests for yourself and I'm sure you will see a big difference, especially if you are not using the "auto" settings on the mirrorless camera.

      the 10-18 is an older lens and not as sharp as the 10-20. the 10-20 is also much smaller and lighter and has an internal zoom which is better for gimbals. however, the old 10-18 does have optical stabilization so that’s a point in favour of the old one (plus it’s cheaper)
