  • After comparing the books to the movie series, I want to analyze the love between Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Were they a good couple and destined to be together, or was it the opposite?

Honestly, it annoyed me because Ron did nothing wrong! He was dating Lavender, so what? Hermione never showed she had feelings for him so why should Ron be treated like he did something wrong for not picking up on Hermione's shared feelings since neither of them recognised their feelings properly at that point? I get that Ron had the same problem when he was conflicted about Hermione being with Viktor Krum, but he never physically attacked anyone. The fact that Hermione did the exact same thing like two books beforehand makes it all the more irritating on Hermione's part tbh.

I hate how movies ruined Ron's character but they turned Hermione into a Mary Sue who can do no wrong and she gets admired for every single thing she does. Whenever something goes wrong in their relationship it's always Ron's fault. That's really irritating and both of them are so much better in the books.

One reason I get upset with how Ron and Hermione were written was that it didn't let Rupert Grint a chance to act those scenes. He's a wonderful actor and I think he'd of done wonderfully portraying those soft, small caring moments that Ron has throughout the books.
I always loved their relationship, I always just felt that you just know they worked really hard on their relationship as adults because they know how awful they can both be for the other and they love each other to much to let themselves fall into toxic behaviour.

something that i really loved about ron and hermione's relationship in the books was how it was very clear that they both had moments when they were in the right during arguments. in the movies it seemed that hermione was always framed as being right and ron just seemed a lot meaner in general. additionally i think that ron and hermione are both people who just like to argue. and that they argue with each other so much because of that "i know i'm not going to lose our friendship no matter how much we fight" mentality. they definitely have a special bond and harry's internal commentary on the situation always makes me smile.

In the end is all comes back to JK's poor romance writing skills because nearly every character ends up marrying a high school sweetheart - unrealistic.

So, we get told that ron and hermione spend a lot of time together, either during summer or times when harry hears about it, but it's glossed over. By then, we don't see or hear much about their time. We mostly see harry and hermione's alone time together. Because harry is experiencing it as we are reading it. Maybe that is why some people think about harry and hermione's relationship more than ron and hermione. Because we've experienced their "chemistry" more.

It always seemed like Harry/Hermione shippers were reading different books or simply wanted their favorite male character paired with their favorite female character. I think people who ship Harry and Hermione together haven't read the books in a while (or at all). There's no romantic chemistry between them in the books. There was, however, chemistry in the movies so if you only watch the movies for a while, you start to think that they should be together. People also often forget that we see everything through Harrys perspective so we'll never see Ron and Hermione hang out without him. The movies ruined Ron completely too. In the books, yes, he was pretty insecure but he was also quite witty, street-smart, genuinely funny and caring, especially later on when he stopped caring so much about what other people thought of him and gained confidence.

Nope, the read the books and realized that there is potential between Harry and Hermione because they work well together and they balance one another. I ship Harry and Hermione only in the movies, not the books. But even in the books, I find the Hermione/Ron love-boat to be very toxic and too cliched. I keep hearing the “opposites attract” argument but that doesn’t matter when all the two do is argue. And I’ve seen relationships where two people who argue do not last long together.

I have to admit, I'm wasn't the biggest fan of romantic Romione, especially in the movies (mainly because I thought they were too different and the movies made Hermione seem too perfect and Ron mostly being the source of humor, even though he is much more than that). Besides the fact that they have no romantic chemistry in the books, I find that Harry's internal monologue about Hermione was deeply platonic, rather unkind and sometimes even sexist. Everything JKR says always makes me roll my eyes. It's like you said, if she really felt that Harry and Hermione were meant for each other than it would have come out in the writing. There is a lot of stuff in the books were i wonder how that came from the same person. I love the series and it feels like home to me but as i get older there is a lot that makes me wonder what she was thinking. Like with Lupin being a wear wolf but she likened it to someone having HIV and then gave it such a bad stigma to be a wear wolf. The elf's and slavery. Snape being such an evil person, treating children so horribly which i'm sure gave a lot of them some serious trauma(Neville!) and then in the end he is supposed to be a hero? Don't even get me started on the cursed child and the new movies. It makes me sad to that she could't just leave it alone after the last movie.
I watched the movies before reading all the books later. I only read the first book when i was really young. But i never ever thought or got a feeling that Harry and Hermione were more than friends or that they would end up together. It was always Ron and Hermione. It really did annoy me that they put in scenes in the movies to show that maybe it could be them instead of using that time to work on Harry and Ginny's relationship. I think a big problem the movies had was that they didn't put enough scenes with the characters being friends. I think that could have made the movies a lot better. For me personally i thought Harry and Luna had more chemistry together in the movies than Harry and Ginny. It would have been interesting if they had Harry end up with Luna in the end or maybe even Harry and Cho.

you are gonna become my favorite youtube channel! 🧡 I have been waiting for a essay on these two that is balanced and not based on Ron-bashing. I loved this couple growing up! my only issue with it its Ron's character. Don't get me wrong I LOVE him but I've always felt that after book three JK Rowling didn't quite know what to do with his character. Its like Harry and Hermione grow a lot and start to have romantic and career interests that define a little bit who they would become when they are older but Ron somehow its just *there*. Granted he was never very ambitious academically but c'mon! this is the guy that in the first book wanted nothing more than surprass his brothers' acchivements. Why not show a little bit of that? Why don't give him a bit of success too, regarding his quidditch skills? Or when he mentions (before Harry, I may add!) he wanted to be an Auror, why dont show how the adventures they have in the books shape more or less his interest on this career path? Or why don't show his interest in making a lot of money, i.e having showing interest (as a future partner) in Fred and George's business?
And even when Ron finds a girlfriend it almost feels like he doesn't have any attraction for her? he only dates Lavander to make sure Hermione KNOWS he can date someone too and its so infuriating!!! like I get it he fancies Hermione but Harry and Hermione by this point had been shown to have romantic interests outside of the ship they would end up (Cho, Krum) but even those outside relationships and crushes are treated with respect. Ron doesn't get this moment. His relationship is reduced to a mere disgust/joke by both of his friends....and it seems like even Ron doesnt wants to be in that relationship, either! And its not realistic for him to not have a least one romantic interest besides Hermione. Or like make him not have a romantic interest but use that to show me he is just not interested in dating. Like its not an aspect of life he cares about and make that a tension point on the book when Harry and Hermione do have dates! At least by this we would know where he stands emotionally, romantically.
By Deathly Hallows Ron starts to *mature* in certain places but even then its nothing compare to the growth the other two go through. By this point I don't know what he wants nor how can get it because the story doesn't tell me anything about him! I only know he is a Good Guy and the protagonist' Best Friend and his Family is Great but if you are gonna have a character that only is there for his friends then great but DONT make him end up with possibly the most overarchiver in the bloody series!!!!
It just feels flat and I hate it because as you can see I love the character and have a lot of opinon on it lol

I never understood why people ship Hermione and Harry, never seen any romantic appeal in their relationship, and quite like how Ron can relate to Hermione, and complete her too, like in the first book if I remember correctly, when the plant needs fire to be beaten, and she doesn't know how to do it, but Ron just remembers her she's a witch

Thank you for this video. I like you video essays, and I was worried that I might disagree with your opinion, but no. I 100% relate to what you are saying, as a HP fan, who also read books multipule times. From the very begining I was sure, the Ron and Hermione were endgame(just like Harry and Ginny), so when I saw people online shipping Harry/Hemione I just didn't understand, where these ideas were comming from.
Can’t wait for your new Harry Potter content 💖

In my mind the movies highlighted the classic portrayal of a teenage boy in Ron like they emphasise the whole trope of he definitely likes you he's a dick to you which is difficult to reconcile as to why hermione is interest in a guy that treats her that poorly as classic feminist character

I’m a bit late to this but great analysis! I was a bit reluctant clicking the video but I’m so glad I did. Well balaced analysis, would love to see more hp content from you! I would also like to add my two cents about how hermione indirectly helped Ron’s character development throughout the books. Many people don’t notice these slight improvements in Ron’s character that were indirectly caused bc of hermione. Like Ron’s treatment to the house elves before and after. During GOF he didn’t really care for them, would usually tell hermione that they like being enslaved, wouldn’t really bother hermione with SPEW unless she asked him to, etc. But in deathly hallows in midst of a war where hermione completely forgot abt the house elves, Ron didn’t. He reminded them of the elves and that they should free them! He went from “they are content with the way they’re living to realising that they really have no choice but to be content with it, etc.” and that’s when hermione finally kissed him! To me that was perfect timing for the kiss, to have him reminding her of something she held close to her heart. It’s a lesson she indirectly taught him, it’s one of my favourite moments of them together bc you get to see that he was actually listening to her all this time, his words were still on his mind even when they were in the verge of dying in a war. It’s something she finds important, thus making it important to him (in some sorta way). There are many other examples of Ron’s development that were indirectly caused by hermione, but this was my absolute favourite! they really compliment each other in a great way. Btw I’m sure I’m not the only on who noticed that hermione adopted a cat version of Ron (ginger, grumpy, an outcast who isn’t wanted, etc). That was the cutest thing!

I really do hate how dumb the movies sometimes they made Ron to be. Like in the first movie, they only had Hermione be the one to figure out how to get out of the Devil's Snare. But in the books, Hermione had the facts and the possible solution but she also grew up a Muggleborn so Ron had to be the one to remind her to use her magic. Ron and Hermione were both extremely smart, but in different ways. Hermione was book smart and Ron was street smart.

One thing I loved about their relationship that yoh didn't touch on, was that Ron is actually smart. Like. Really. (Again more on Ron's character botching... lol) but he and Hermione wouldn't always be arguing, but having genuine, friendly DEBATES, and occasionally they got heated so Harry felt awkward.
Another thing I wanted to add: I think their harsh (sometimes too much) arguing actually IS accurate, especially if they met at a young age. They're growing and changing. Just think about how many times you and your friends had heated, genuine arguments that didn't make you grow apart. Especially from 11? I think that's normal. I think they did start as friends, just friends, and then it was a mutual crush (possibly on and off, as they are young and didn't want to ruin a friendship) that eventually turned into more.
Idk. Just my thoughts. But I think your analysis is lovely!!

I always loved Hermione and Krum because I always got the impression that he was drawn to her personality and looks and wasn't afraid to show it. Especially if you consider his backround or the school he attented - he didn't care about her backround, only about her. And I really loved it that he wasn't afraid to show his feelings. Granted, Ron was pretty young back then and not many 14 years old can express that kind of feelings, but it still made me like her and Krum more than her and Ron.
