Today I went to a park in the heart of San Francisco Chinatown where all the elderly Chinese go to play cards! I set up a little table to give free English lessons and practice a little Cantonese as well! How did people react when I speak to them in Chinese?

Hey Chris, will you be going to Macau (澳門街) next? Would be interesting to see you guys interacting with the locals there, speaking Chinese and Portuguese!
Hey Chris, If you want to improve your Cantonese through watching HK films; I would strongly recommend that you watch ANY of the movies or filmworks directed or produced by Wai Ka-Fai (韋家輝).
Ask ANYBODY who has lived in Hong Kong for at least 20+ years, and they will certainly know who Wai Ka-Fai is.
I would compare him to very famous American directors like Oliver Stone or Sam Peckinpah; people who grew up in times of GREAT social distress, filled with all sorts of conflicts and turmoil... Things they have witnessed happen like WW2, Korean War, Vietnam War, ect.
Just lots and lots of people in trouble or dying everywhere!
With exposure to all kinds of '蘇州屎' (Suzhou Shit) like that, it would surely have heavily influenced the themes in their movies and films.
There is an old TVB drama called '義不容情 Looking Back in Anger (1989)'.
It is very old, but it's still VERY POPULAR and many Cantonese-speaking people know about it.
It's one of the most watched TVB series by Chinese people in Hong Kong and around the world.
It reflects upon the old pre-1997 culture and society of Hong Kong and its people; involving events, situations, social interactions, and pop-culture references that simply CANNOT be recreated in modern times today.
You can learn quite a bit about authentic Hong Kong history and culture from that show.
There are some very intense moments and bloody feuds/conflicts with the characters involved.
Trust me, you will want to pull your hair out after you watch it!
This is because of the vast amount of 社會見識 (social knowledge) that you will gain after watching it, and not just from learning Cantonese. Trust me, you will learn ALOT.
I first saw it on VCD format like many years ago, from a friend who used to run a videostore in New York Chinatown.
Back then, it was only available in Cantonese/Manadarin audio with traditional Chinese subtitles.
I had ZERO knowledge of Chinese back then, but my friends FORCED me to watch it because they said it will help me learn more about Chinese culture.
It took me a LONG TIME, like FOREVER to finally figure out what the hell they were saying, but I eventually figured it out after watching it over and over again like multiple times over the years.
With 50 episodes, it was ALOT to take in and digest for a non-Cantonese speaker!
And coming from an Italian-American who grew up in New York, I am quite proud to have watched it myself during my own lifetime.
You can probably find the episodes here somewhere on CZcams, so be sure to check it out!
Dude approaches a teacher, asks how to make people shut the fuck up, refuses to elaborate, leaves. Not all heroes wear capes
Love it!
Based on the wife's reaction at second visit, he went straight home and told her to "Shut Up". LOL.
Chris, your Cantonese is sounding really good! I am an ABC who speaks Cantonese. My pronunciation is on point (according to a HK cab driver) but my vocabulary is more limited so ordering at Dim Sum is my jam.
@@eeldude Greetings from New York! Just spend more time in Cantonese tea houses, gossiping with those uncles and aunties (ah soks & ah saams). You will learn alot and very fast!
The first guy had me in tears from laughing so hard! They way he was saying it as he was walking away. 😂😅
Kudos to this language maverick for not only breaking language barriers but also embracing the playful side of communication.
Speaking different languages is not your only gift, your ability to connect with people is amazing.
shut up! don't talk to me! 🤣 Laoma we need t shirts with this on it !!
leave me alone … stop talking…
shut up 😂
that first old man is classic!!!!... golden comedy cause you know he going home and telling that to his english speaking grand kids
Your Cantonese pronunciation is actually improving a lot over the past year of videos. Very impressive!.
Really?? It's been so long since I spoke Cantonese hahah. But here trying!
Yeah your canto is not bad considering. Would love to see more videos of it. And that parking garage area in SF chinatown brings back tons of memories from childhood. Parents would park there for our shopping trips.
@@LaomaChris Not everyone from Guangdong can speak Cantonese , but your Cantonese is pretty good compared with people who aren't the Cantonese mother language speaks.👍👍
Try to forget the Beijing accent while you speaking to Cantonese. Or forget your mandarin too. You’ll see other world.😊
@@friendsgroup123 Ironically, more people in Vietnam and Malaysia can speak Cantonese than Guangdong! 🤔
6:21 This is a great, understanding man; nice to find people like this when you are new at using a language.
So enjoyed this video. I'm kind of surprised to hear that Taishanhua is still used quite a bit in San Francisco's tang yen fau, as the young lady was saying. I would have thought that Mandarin took over, but I did know that Cantonese is still the main dialect spoken in Chinatown. We used to go out there every other summer when my dad and mom took us out there in the 1970s. Dad was from Kaiping and mom was from Taishan. Good to see the Kaiping connection as well as the Taishan connection is still strong with San Francisco's Chinatown after all these years. Keep teaching up the good people with your English seminars. You are providing a valuable service to the Asian American communities.
Appreciate it Jay! It was really cool to see this little enclave where a lot of people didn't even really speak much standard Cantonese or Mandarin. But everyone was super helpful, and it's clear that they really help each other out
@@LaomaChris Your honest and sincere attitude says everything about you, Chris!
Lol first person just wants people to stop talking to him 🤣
Bro, your cantonese is damn good for a non native speaker.
👍 I think your Cantonese has improved a lot. You're so much better than my own daughter! She only recognises it's Cantonese when I'm scolding her🤣
hahaha it's tough! I wish i had more Canto speakers around me here in the DC area
@@LaomaChris Yes, Cantonese is very tough. My daughter says it's because of the tones, much like Mandarin. But you've mastered Mandarin so I'm very sure your Cantonese will be just as good.
I'm quite sure there are many Cantonese around. It's just that they won't speak in Cantonese unless they hear you speaking it first. Because you are a foreigner, they don't expect you to speak Mandarin, much less Cantonese!
I love watching their reactions when you speak to the Chinese in Mandarin. And then they start talking to you so warmly😊
I'm Cantonese and I'm trying to learn Taishanese. Super tough. My late Grandma spoke it and so does my Dad and his siblings. Strange thing is they don't speak to any of the kids so none of us can speak Taishanese. I can understand them but I can only speak the very basic like greetings.
Love seeing people smile!
So cool to see that you were in my hood! Thanks for talking to the locals and making them smile. I'm sure it made their day 🙂
Chinatown is where I grew up and this is close to my heart. Could you learn a little bit of Taishan and do a second video? The locals would love it!
dude, your cantonese is way more understandable than the other guy (you know who i am talking about) on youtube man. seriously, your tones are almost getting on point and you are responding back appropriately which means you understand what others are saying. that is really impressive. respect. now, your mandarin is off the hook. stop being so hunble chris. lol
No need to compare. You can compliment his Cantonese without bringing another CZcamsr down (and yes, Ik who you’re talking about).
its crazy how we know who youre talking about 😆 we too into this
😂🎉
Are you referring to the guy that couldnt understand or speak Canto, yet seems to "shock" ppl w/his perfectly spoken language? That guy? Just wondering if we are referring to the same person.🤔.

Laoma is crushing it with his Cantonese. WTG!

this is amazing! keep it up G
Awww great video! Yes most Chinese people in San Francisco speak Cantonese and Taishanese. Mandarin is less common. Your Cantonese is very good. Can understand what you’re trying to say! Good job!
When you clapped on 4:28 and the birds flew behind you it was a really cool movie effect
Hahah that actually happened a bunch of times throughout the shoot
That first dude was having a good day man! He felt the power of a new language.
Wow your canto is great!
Love this
This is amazing.
Yo! Fellow American linguist here~ I recently moved to KL, Malaysia (from Thailand) where I'm learning Cantonese and also improving my Mandarin (Malaysian style). Your Cantonese is doing awesome 👍 I will be catching up soon hah
Good most KL Chinese converse in Cantonese besides mandarin, English and Malay and other Chinese dialects as well so you should be able to learn fast here.

As a person who grows up in Kongmoon(Jiangmen) and living in HK, I feel very familiar with these aunties and uncles.

this was a cool vid man! I really enjoyed!
Very good deal 👍👍

met a taishanese retired man chef in HongKong. he was in his 70s. he emigrated to and lived in Boston USA for over 30 years working in a restaurant in China Town. he knew no English. he was accompanied by his America born daughter to revisit HongKong as he lived there before moving to the US.
Did his daughter speak any Cantonese?
Dude I live right next to the park like 3 mins away and I like ur vids, wish I would have known 😂
the old grandapa now yelling "don`t talk to me" all day everyday to his wife.
aaaah como amo tus videos!
Wow! You are in my hood in the 415! San Francisco. The City! He is on Kearny St in Chinatown.
I would but don't go much past Rockville. Tempted to have lunch at some of the restaurants you visit down county.
Your cantonese is actually very good and better than mine. Your tones are good enough. But of course it's never wrong to work more on it.
I'm pretty sure the guy who asked you how to say "shut up" wanted to know it to say it to his wife but somewhat in my mind tell me that it was the first and the last time he tried it jajajaja.
Btw someday I hope to be able to talk Mandarin as fluently as you talk, even when there are grey days I look for your videos 'cause they make me feel happy. Probably the reason is that you are like my predilect model, take care Chris thank you so much for your content
8:14 Chris nailed it here 😂 this is the kind of reactions or behavior from Chinese people on the street that i find funny: the grandpa came back, how come? why?? 🤣
Language talent !
Dang you were in my hood! Would’ve been nice to run into you for some lessons lol
LOL... set up a table? My goodness it's so hilarious!!! Hahahaha.... And bro your Cantonese got better?
OMG,Chirs. If I knew you were in San Francisco, I would like to see you.

Your Cantonese speaking with a Mandarin accent is...the reverse of me. I speak Mandarin with a Cantonese accent LOL.
I agree with the people you were conversing with. Your Cantonese is understandable and you get your point across... be it a bit polite/less slang. 👍 (which tbh is not a bad thing to error on the side of polite)
hahahahhahahahahah !!!
Hey whenever you have the time you should go checkout this restaurant called Kamlok it’s very good. If you ever go back to Sf Chinatown.
Yeargh, small cozy place located downstairs in the basement... Nice tasty HK/Cantonese-style home cookin'. I remember going there when I was in SF. Have you also been to Ling Nam Siu Koon?
Hey Chris, did you move to SF? I live in the SF Bayarea! I hope I get a chance to run into you!
The first guy sprinted home to tell his wife to "shut up , dont talk to me "

can someone please explain to me why there are numbers in the words at 7:15 . is that for tone?

I live in England for 34 years and my Mandarin is terrible...novice at best even though I'm Chinese :(
Hello sir. I just subscribe to your channel. I want to learn Mandarin also.

dont talk to me 和leave me along,哪个更委婉些
