  • "Jeannie went to jail this morning for not leaving camp. Many stayed at SafeGround Pilgrimage church last night. No church tonight" ~ [bit.ly/wsQqzz]
This past week Jeannie and Eli [bit.ly/AzJIik] were arrested in Sacramento for being homeless. They lived along with about 125 other homeless people in an organized tent community called Safe Ground [www.safegroundsac.org]
Jeannie worked as an in-home nurse. She lost her job and her place to live on the same day. Since April she has been living in a tent in Sacramento.
Kind of ironic Jeannie talks about the city council changes needed and the prospects of Sacramento allowing the campers to have a place to live is only days before they were forced to move.
The old hippie in me loves the self-governing tent city model, but really the only reason a tent community even exists is because homeless services have failed to provide adequate support.
What are your thoughts on this controversial issue?
Special thanks to Safe Ground www.safegroundsac.org

    About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as CZcams, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

This is it; the human spirit. The determination to succeed against the odd, to protect each other from the disasters of life and to celebrate when we do succeed. This woman, Jeannie, is the embodiment of all of these qualities. I wish her, and all the citizens of her wonderful tent city, all the best.

Depends on where that tent is. I own a house, it is old and broken down but it is mine scott free and completely paid off. I think for me personally I would have a hard time in a tent city but only because I am a loner.. by choice. So being that close to other people might go against my current. I donate to other people in need, and right now I have my sewing machine out making cat beds to give to our areas humane society. I am people lover and an avid animal activist. I just like my privacy. But if I needed a place to live I do not have any problem living in a tent. I don't put a $ value on my happiness and the best things in life are free. Some of the most kind hearted people that I have met are the farthest from wealthy.

lisa smith You are totally missing the point. These people aren't petitioning to voluntarily camp out in the city, they have no other choice.
People with nowhere else to go and nobody to turn to are coming together for support and protection, and the government is trying to tell them they can't.

Lets hear the argument on why you are not letting these people camp in your yard then.
The fact is these homeless camps bring filth and lower property value. Not too mention take over public spaces like parks.
Why is that a problem? Well mainly because I dont want my kids playing around the garbage, piss and shit and used hypodermic needles that are left at the places they're taking over and wrecking.

What, camping on private property is illegal? That's totally ridiculous! We often did it as children, and you know how children are ... once this tent was set up, it probably stayed up until someone told us to take it down again. U.S. laws are crazy. You can't CAMP on your private property, you can't line-dry your clothes, but you can murder anyone who walks over your property (even if he is a drunk and clueless young exchange student who simply wanted to look around - not murder, not steal, just sneak around).

The only disadvantage legally that I can see would be not having an adequate toileting facilities. They should all chip in a few$$ and at least rent a porta john. Water you can bring in using jugs. I don't think the government can complain about no utilities except for the raw sewage. People do off the grid homesteading all the time across America. If there are children involved than the stipulations may be different. The only way to change this is to change whatever city or county ordinance laws restrict camping. They did something similar in West Virginia a few months ago while the people went to one of the churches for a meal. They came back and it was gone. Those personal documents are hard to replace because one must be shown to get the other. Other things like lost family photos are not replaceable.

People are depending on the Government for everything, when they need to work out their own salvation, if they are able to do so. Some people definitely need help, but the vast majority should try to help themselves.

  • @marthacarrerainfante8267

I don’t know, this lady does not seem to be an addict, she is coherent and personable. Where are their families to lend support to them? Yet, as a case manager I saw many in similar circumstances and yet, we help them with rental assistance, laundry vouchers, utilities and they still would end up loosing their benefits for breaking the rules.

1st) MANY MANY people who are on the street are NOT drunks, druggies, or mental cases. There are MANY people who hold down full time jobs who simply can't afford rent.
2nd) Not all people have family and/or friends who will or can help someone get back on their feet with a place to live; they either can't afford to or don't want to or else there is no family to be able to get help from to begin with.
If you're an only child who doesn't have any children, who's going to help?
If you've outlived all of your friends and family, who's going to help?
If you've aged out of the foster care system, who's going to help you?
Many times, unfortunately there is simply no one there to give you a helping hand.
