- "Jeannie went to jail this morning for not leaving camp. Many stayed at SafeGround Pilgrimage church last night. No church tonight" ~ [bit.ly/wsQqzz]
This past week Jeannie and Eli [bit.ly/AzJIik] were arrested in Sacramento for being homeless. They lived along with about 125 other homeless people in an organized tent community called Safe Ground [www.safegroundsac.org]
Jeannie worked as an in-home nurse. She lost her job and her place to live on the same day. Since April she has been living in a tent in Sacramento.
Kind of ironic Jeannie talks about the city council changes needed and the prospects of Sacramento allowing the campers to have a place to live is only days before they were forced to move.
The old hippie in me loves the self-governing tent city model, but really the only reason a tent community even exists is because homeless services have failed to provide adequate support.
What are your thoughts on this controversial issue?
Special thanks to Safe Ground www.safegroundsac.org

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as CZcams, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.
These people's stories are real eye openers. You don't have to be deranged or a bad person to be homeless, so many bright , talented people have fallen through the cracks. May God help them 🙏.
Give people the chance to utilize what they are good at, instead of arresting them. There are countless people who need a caregiver.
Love what she’s trying to do and her wishes were on point. Great interview!
what an beautiful soul!
This is it; the human spirit. The determination to succeed against the odd, to protect each other from the disasters of life and to celebrate when we do succeed. This woman, Jeannie, is the embodiment of all of these qualities. I wish her, and all the citizens of her wonderful tent city, all the best.
I agree with you. This is back to basics community building. How tragic that society as it has evolved now places obstacles in people's way to prevent this most natural of phenomena from taking root. This is the real tragedy of society.
Depends on where that tent is. I own a house, it is old and broken down but it is mine scott free and completely paid off. I think for me personally I would have a hard time in a tent city but only because I am a loner.. by choice. So being that close to other people might go against my current. I donate to other people in need, and right now I have my sewing machine out making cat beds to give to our areas humane society. I am people lover and an avid animal activist. I just like my privacy. But if I needed a place to live I do not have any problem living in a tent. I don't put a $ value on my happiness and the best things in life are free. Some of the most kind hearted people that I have met are the farthest from wealthy.
lisa smith You are totally missing the point. These people aren't petitioning to voluntarily camp out in the city, they have no other choice.
People with nowhere else to go and nobody to turn to are coming together for support and protection, and the government is trying to tell them they can't.
Hey Mark, you doing a good job. Keep up the good work. I would like to buy an Invisible People cap or hat.
Is so very upsetting that ,such rich and powerful country cares so little for the most vulnerable,so sad.
you would think that her qualifications as a nurse, would get her a new job right away - unfortunately it doesn't always work out that way.
thanks for doing these interviews!! you are doing amazing work.
2:56 if that's right that you allowing a tent to be up on your own property
for more than 24h is illegal, then that's not the land of the free and seems to be unconstitutional.
Why cant the government pick a cheap area and relocate these people and allow them to have free housing, they can help renovate those empty houses in dead towns...these people have proffessions they can build up their town....this lady is a nurse. God bless them ❤❤❤
2012 wow, I hope things are much better for everyone now. God bless you Jeannie and thank you for all the services you've provided to everyone. Your heart and determination speaks volumes about your character, thanks for being awesome!!
SHE is AWESOME ❣️🇺🇸🗡️❣️🇺🇸🗡️❣️🇺🇸🗡️👸👑👄🌺🌈🐦🗡️🍃🍃🍃
I wish she could get her job back. She would be a good nurse
I pray for the homeless. I blame the government. The system as let us down. Lets not give money to your own backyard. So messed up they need a floor over there head. So sad.
Yes, they help immigrants from other countries and help them buildd beautiful homes. Pay for their children’s education and help them open their own business. Yes, I’ve seen it and it’s hard to believe that our own are neglected so badly while we take very good care of those that arrive (saying) they are fleeing religious persecution, ooh really? Our very own suffer persecution from a rotten system. Who is more important?
It's not a Democrat or a Republican thing; the government and the social services of the country have been, unfortunately letting Americans who are on the streets down for decades...
As well as the governments of most other countries.
I do not understand the law against camping. I really don't. I mean, what arguments are there?
oneiros666 - Well, depends where you are camping... If someone's land then it's trespassing... If public land then it's for everyone to enjoy... Otherwise lets all just move into the local parks and start setting up residence! It's chaos...
Not saying I agree with this, but these are some of the arguments.
Lets hear the argument on why you are not letting these people camp in your yard then.
The fact is these homeless camps bring filth and lower property value. Not too mention take over public spaces like parks.
Why is that a problem? Well mainly because I dont want my kids playing around the garbage, piss and shit and used hypodermic needles that are left at the places they're taking over and wrecking.
Hopefully you guys are okay
the gov should let people rule themselves if it fails to do so. those people just need to be empowered. they are capable to do so when a little space is provided.
What, camping on private property is illegal? That's totally ridiculous! We often did it as children, and you know how children are ... once this tent was set up, it probably stayed up until someone told us to take it down again. U.S. laws are crazy. You can't CAMP on your private property, you can't line-dry your clothes, but you can murder anyone who walks over your property (even if he is a drunk and clueless young exchange student who simply wanted to look around - not murder, not steal, just sneak around).
it's illegal to be homeless nowadays, for nearly 20 years now
because ALL property is owned now by the united snakes of america
How can an ordinary person from far away like me i live in the Balkans support these people it's the government who should do it but they won't do shit unless pressured by other non-homeless people
A lot of holes in this lady's story. She seems like a professional victim.
Well you seem like a professional judgemental person.
@@jamielee7404 Don't be so open-minded that your brain falls out.
🙏
There are so many people that need a basic home. I think it’s our government is to blame and no intake facilities for the mentally I’ll. The thing that give homeless a bad rep are the ones strung out on drugs living surrounded by garbage.
Hope she gets a job and housing soon
I wonder where she is now.
@Di0genesus Don't disguard information because someone labelled it conspiracy. I am not a nut job but some things they point out are dead on. But anyways if they know the economy is getting worst but already stoping tent cities. Where do they plan on putting all these people. They ain't allowed anywhere these days. Scary. Kudos to anyone surviving the streets. Thats gotta be rough mentally and physically.
I did not hear her mention once about getting another nursing job and getting back on her feet. I heard the government should give us a building etc. Use your energy to get out of that situation instead of becoming a permanent squatter.
yeah sacramento make me feel sick and want to leave with thise homeless people pain fml
your surge of good things is coming...you will make it.
nobody ever saves for a rainy day
This makes me wonder Greg because I did in home nursing as well and it's one of the best ways to save your money, they provide food ,room and board plus you get paid you don't have to spend a dime of what you earn. So nothing saved?
Lots of people save for a rainy day, but sometimes that rainy day lasts longer!
Soooo f'd up. Until now, I'd imagined it wasnt too hard to roam free and sleep/live wherever you can in the wide open public spaces of the world. Listening to her, I see now how many stupid municipal rules would disrupt simply being a human being without a roof over head.
I cant believe with all the money America has that there is no help for the homeless...this hurts my heart
Yes in my usa city its never been dealt with. I come from one of the largest cities in the usa. Government doesn't care or help.
@@thomasfristmd1876 but they adore the super Rich. Uber rich. Lose all the peasant simpletons! Is there mantra.
The only disadvantage legally that I can see would be not having an adequate toileting facilities. They should all chip in a few$$ and at least rent a porta john. Water you can bring in using jugs. I don't think the government can complain about no utilities except for the raw sewage. People do off the grid homesteading all the time across America. If there are children involved than the stipulations may be different. The only way to change this is to change whatever city or county ordinance laws restrict camping. They did something similar in West Virginia a few months ago while the people went to one of the churches for a meal. They came back and it was gone. Those personal documents are hard to replace because one must be shown to get the other. Other things like lost family photos are not replaceable.

They put her in jail? OUTRAGEOUS!!! This says a lot about what? California? Not surprising. Shame! Such shame on the police & state government!
"A stark reality check" - Being homeless after having had a regular nursing job - this could happen to anyone. Have you heard about breaking the law for camping in your own backyard for over 24 hours? The laws are flawed and it will only take an equalization in the monetary system to stop nonsensical negligence toward fellow human beings. equalmoney. org if you care about yourself and others in equality.
MarlenLife is
even NURSES are homeless..no one job is safe even needed ones
She was not a nurse, she was a live in caregiver. All she had to do is hook up with a caregiving agency and they would have found her another live in position, if she qualifies. People are depending on the Government for everything, when they need to work out their own salvation, if they are able to do so. Some people definitely need help, but the vast majority should try to help themselves.
I don’t know, this lady does not seem to be an addict, she is coherent and personable. Where are their families to lend support to them? Yet, as a case manager I saw many in similar circumstances and yet, we help them with rental assistance, laundry vouchers, utilities and they still would end up loosing their benefits for breaking the rules.
1st) MANY MANY people who are on the street are NOT drunks, druggies, or mental cases. There are MANY people who hold down full time jobs who simply can't afford rent.
2nd) Not all people have family and/or friends who will or can help someone get back on their feet with a place to live; they either can't afford to or don't want to or else there is no family to be able to get help from to begin with.
If you're an only child who doesn't have any children, who's going to help?
If you've outlived all of your friends and family, who's going to help?
If you've aged out of the foster care system, who's going to help you?
Many times, unfortunately there is simply no one there to give you a helping hand.
Stay warm n have a good weekend.... from Oklahoma.
Human life has become cheap...animals are housed better, its principals.
Absolutely!
Putting up a tent for 24 hrs+ purely for last resort survival NOT okay. Owning a gun under personal freedom rights as per the second amendment to the US constitution IS okay - actually more than okay (apparently also for survival reasons). From a confused viewer in England.
She should be getting a Medal, not Handcuffs.
If we, as homeless people would stop doing drugs and leaving trash all over these areas, we could stay in these areas.
While people continue to rely on the government and continue to obey, sights and camps like these will become even more common.
EXACTLY. This lady should not rely on the Government, she seems able bodied and able to work. She has worked as a caregiver, so all she need to do is hook up with a caregiver agency and they will find her a job as a live in caregiver. care giving is a temp job, so you need to hook up with many agencies, so you are never out of work.
Dude had cam quality 10yrs ago
Pray for our government...
Look at Jerry Brown!
Hi in visible people , Do you know just how many people are homeless in THE U.S.A . Is there Evan a ruff estimate out there ? It seems to me just by following the sadness ,that each year there seems to be more , or more are being found , also Britain seems to be on the rise , when they had some big cuts in there social serves that helped to support the down and out , God bless you and what you do everyday for invisible People . Love from Canada .

STOP BEING RACIST, HATING, KILLING,etc....IF WE ALL GET ALONG LIFE WOULD BE ALRIGHT...a lot of people take the good life for granted until they lose it all...some people dont deserve to be homeless but i don't feel sorry for a lot of them...they were jerks at one point and now expect sympathy from others. PEACE this is my message...dont bash back at me if you don't understand
Omg! Trippie Redds mom!
All laws benefit the wealthy and powerful.
Since you are not wearing hello and you are living in the woods and if you are not wearing the color you can be mistaken as a deer or moose I am not trying to be mean I know just not fitting into somebody would Polaris May the peace of Christ be with you
Lead them Lord Jesus in the way they should go.🙏💖💖💖🙏
These people are trying to survive the best they can, have nowhere to go & stay close enough to a town or city to have access to basic needs like food, and the city just sweeps them away like trash! Will we ever see a reversal of this insanity? I don’t understand, cities have lots of empty spaces wether buildings and/or land, can’t they at least make the land available for the homeless? Why are people in government so cruel?
So what you're saying is she was a homeless in-home nurse. Cuz when you are an in-home nurse that does not mean that is your residence. Most in-home nurses I've ever met have their own home to go home to. I know that there is some pretty sad homeless cases out there, there is also a lot of cases of people who just did not prepare for tomorrow.
These sob stories are hard to believe, but I'm sure there are reasons for them.

I dont understand this at all.i have to buy my own house when they want free land?I'm not against the homeless but I dont understand.where did she say she was gonna try to go get another job?

Oh gosh...what happened to all of the money she earned? 😔
It is an illegal consideration to lend something that has no substance behind it. If we do not change this system we allow this to continue. A profit based system considers profit before life.
Obviously, god is not changing this. Humans must stand and make the change.

Trump 2020 Make America live in tents again..
think she wantz her own town,,
Answer wishes/prayers Lord Jesus. S,h,d,homes jobs love🤔💖🙏😊
Well you have tried democrats for 25 years or so, you think maybe it’s time to try something different? Three wishes won’t do it, getting rid of the democrats maybe?
This happened in 2012 when we had Pres. Obama in office. This is what he did to America! Thank GOD it is now 2018 and we have Pres. Trump. Under Trump this will not happen.
There's no guarantee things will get better for such people under Trump, since there are several different reasons for homelessness. But yes, Obama did a good job of intentionally destroying the American economy.. BTW, there is one thing that should be noted about the people in these camp videos. For the most part, they are older white people... who are not minorities and who are not women that are continuing to have numerous fatherless children.....
