  • I FINALLY got an xr650r! I bought this bike while I was out west and had some friends back home get it running. The only thing we overlooked is the shock. It needs a rebuild before I can race it. I'll definitely have it out at the motocross track soon.

      Why would anyone buy that over a new 450l?

      @@fastguysslowbikes Sold my 2019 crf450l 6 months after buying it new. Hated that high revving fourstroke. Had to constantly shift gears when trail riding. Front wheel wouldn't stay on the ground. Power delivery was too snappy for me. Chassis, suspension and brakes are great though. I grew up on thumpers, used to have a xr650r and missed that low-end grunt and more controlled power delivery. Found another xr650r and like it much better. But,, put the xr650r engine in the crf450l frame and..... perfection? (for me anyway)

    • @TroopThrowback
      @TroopThrowback Před 3 lety +1

      Nobody would want to adv ride a 450 of theres any highway mileage to conquer. A big 650 that has the frame geometry for 100mph plus for long stretches and doesn’t vibrate? That would sell all day long. Oh and especially if it were 80# lighter than any other middleweight adv out there.
      I own three xr650r.

    • @kawi4ev
      @kawi4ev Před rokem +1

      Because the 450L cost over 10k and you have to put 2k into it just to get it to run like a 450 should.. so at this time, you can pick up street legal 650r’s for under 4k and have a much better dual sport imo. You can buy 3 or 4 650rs for the price of one 450L. That’s what’s keeping me from buying a 450L. I’ll wait for the used market

    I have an '04. Rode it to Santiago, Chile from Ga w/my buddy on his BMW 650 Dakar! The XR didn't care too much for the Andes Mountains. I didn't take small enough jets. At the peak, we were making about 3 hp. AND both of our bikes boiled out the brake fluid.
    No hp, no braking, maximum fun!

  • @briangary3042
    @briangary3042 Před 3 lety +2

    Thank you for posting this. I’ve been waiting patiently to see you lay down some time on the R.
    I’m immediately jealous of how easily you wrangle it through that twisty single track, on sand and pine straw no less. I’m a good bit bigger than you, and you made it look easy, which for me at least, it is not.
    I’m running the factory carb, uncorked, FMF, and jetted. That being said, the throttle response seemed lazy to me. I’m curious what your feelings are about that.
    Please keep posting the R and keep us updated. It’s great seeing guys who can actually use the potential that bike has. Also, kudos to your wife. There are dudes who ride a lot that are afraid of the R. I think she did great on it.
    Stay safe!

    wait till you re-carb it with a decent carb ie.tm40 mikuni or a fcr 41 keihin pumpers (not the Lectdown) open up the side panel to let it breathe and a set of pro circuit or fmf headers, some suspension revalving....
    with the brakes source a EBC 280mm front rotor and get the calipers rebuilt as they will be getting sticky pistons....
    you might have to raise the forks in the triples to get better turn in if you are planning to ride in the tight woods...
    above all just remember that these bikes were built for open terrain and went across deserts at illegal road speeds for hours on end
    wait till you get out of 2nd gear lol....and remember to shift dont rev the poor thing, it ain’t a CRF

    Monica rides extremely well , she said in the truck that Jacob rides at a whole higher level , that may be true . However I have a 650r as well i have ridden it since 2006 , i have ridden Offroad since 9 years old , now some 50 years plus . Her riding of the Xr650r first time thru the tracks was awesome , even i would be hesitant to go much faster , In my day i rode open class 500 CC Australian 500 cc Motocross . So Iam no stranger to racing . It’s good to see a Husband and wife team ride together , Jacob hold onto that Bike mate its a collectors Item . Also Hold onto that wife of yours , she’s a keeper for sure Good luck to your both well done 👍

    Love my XRR. Replace the clutch bushing with an 02+ so the basket doesn't seize to the bushing and bushing to the main shaft. Replace the carb choke plate with the one from XRs Only. The brakes are shit but you get used to it. Borynack suspension valving (or send to PC if you are willing to fork up the beans). I'd mention a fork brace but I don't think you ran one on your other XRs so screw it. Anything else is fluff.

I paid $4500 for mine but according to the guy I got it from it was still in the crate until 2014. It was the cleanest one I had found. Everything was still stock. For one its liquid cooled while the others are air cooled.. mopawa baby. Honda spent years engenerring it to win the baja races, aka 100mph wide open hours on end, desert runs. The bike was not designed for the kinda tight riding in this video yet still hawls. What I personally love of the XR is that its super minimalist, rugged, light for what it is and that burble, pop, snort from the carburator and the pulse of a big fat torquey single. If you like analog, this is for you. I ride it supermoto and its th best bike I ever rode. Love it.

    I had to quit the xr650r forums on Facebook biggest bunch of douchebags I've ever met in my entire life. Everybody is convinced it's the best bike ever made and can do no wrong and their worth $6,000. It's like when I used to own a Harley the other owners are the biggest drawback to owning one. I like mine but I paid two grand for it wouldn't pay a penny more.

      Yup. I'm in the Facebook groups and feel the same way. Don't get me wrong, it's an awesome and fun bike, but totally outdated by today's standards. They overhype it way too much

      That's because they are at that generation between the old big bores and short stroke 450s. The guys who grew up with them are now in our 40s and we still appreciate them....and the new 450s..ktm500s etc
