  • Making a Stainless Steel Hot Shoe for Flat Track & Speedway Motorbike Racing.
    A friend of mine recently asked me to make him a stainless steel hot shoe for flat track racing. This video shows the process of taking raw stainless steel and hand forming it into a stainless steel hot shoe for flat track racing.
    The hot shoe is made from 2mm thick 304 stainless steel and Tig welded together.
    The toe is drilled for decoration and the whole shoe is polished to a high gloss finish.

    Beautiful work! I truly enjoy watching skilled people ply their craft. It also fills me with hope seeing a British-man (sorry I don’t know what nation you hail from exactly) carrying on the industrial tradition that made the modern world possible.
    Cheers from the U.S.A.

    A good start for the toe top is find a big soup ladle, you can cut it to size and it’s pretty close to dimensions needed. Also you can find them in stainless or steel at any thrift store, restaurant supplies, goodwill ect ...

      People have been experimenting with welded-on hard facing for years, it doesn't work. Distorts the shoe and hard to repair.

    Hard facing in the USA that's stick welding abrasion resistance on heavy equipment. Are you talking about case hardening?

    • @Handmadeextreme
      @Handmadeextreme  Před 3 lety +1

      Yep same here in the UK. There is a follow up to this video where you can see what it looked after it came back from someone else who did the hard facing.... I wasn't happy. Normally with the shoes like this the hard facing is brazed on since the sole is so thin. We do earth moving equipment with the stick welder just like you guys over the pond. Great question and thanks for the support.

    • @Handmadeextreme

    • @Handmadeextreme

      Ballpark £225 for mild steel, £275 for stainless. Price very much depends on desired surface finish and decoration. More polishing and decoration = more cost. I'm happy to do any commissions really. Custom parts etc If you are interested the best thing to do on contact me through my Facebook page. facebook.com/handmadeextreme

    Purely our of interest (too old to flat track) I was wondering if anyone had tried materials like ceramic for the sole of a hotshoe? Or maybe a ceramic coating? Also a while back I heard of new alloy involving gold and platium that is nearly as hard and scratch resistant as DIAMOND! Could yu imagine an ultru thin lining ot THAT? "
    The platinum-gold alloy is 100 times more durable than high-strength steel. It is so resistant to wearing that one mile (1.6 kilometre) of skidding using the hypothetical tyres mentioned above would wear out only a single layer of atoms of the platinum-gold alloy.Aug 24, 2018"

    • @dougiequick1
      @dougiequick1 Před 8 měsíci

      So perhaps a hot shoe coated with the gold platinum alloy only say fraction a mm thick might still be seriously expensive? Still it could last 100 times longer than plain ol steel? So what then if it cost 2 times as much? especially if is 1/4 of the weight? Racers though would have to carry a safe in their race van just to store their hotshoe!
