How To Fix Your Broken Laptop Charger Tip On The Cheap

  • My laptop charger's tip was broken and I didn't want to spend $50-$100 on a brand new charger, especially since the rest of the charger was fine. I decided to fix it myself for less than $10 and make a do-it-yourself guide to show how quick and easy it can be. Enjoy!

    I used to solder a lot back in college. One of those skills that everyone should learn. Fixes a lot of issues that otherwise would cost a ton of money. My technique is to feed in solder after the contact area is warm. You can also spread the solder along the contact area for a more secure connection.
    Solder itself may not come with your iron. I would also be careful when soldering. The fumes are toxic (part of it is lead after all). For small, infrequent jobs, not a big deal.
    Great video! One suggestion for a future video, how to buy video games cheaply!

    For the longest time I have used a old laptop as a plex media server. I was given the machine because the screen was busted. Recently my cousin gave me another laptop and I found out the screen was busted. This laptop is way better than the one running plex at the moment. So it immediately met the requirements for becoming the new plex machine. Problem was that the laptop didnt come with a charger. So I fired up my web browser and headed over to youtube. Typed in "noab laptop charger". And I found this video which helped me change my old laptops charger tip to a tip that the new laptop accepted. Long story short it all worked out. How did I know that Danny would have made a video about a laptop charger tip replacement/fix? Cause thats the kinda stuff nerds on a budge do!

    You can shrink heatshrink tubing by heating it with lighter, btw great vid!

    • @nerdonabudget
      @nerdonabudget  Před 8 lety

      That's true! But would the fumes that come off of it be worse? I've heard that you can also use the tip of the soldering iron to shrink it too, but I've seen it let off fumes, I guess if you do it outside it wouldn't be a problem!

    • @matebasic9756
      @matebasic9756 Před 8 lety

      No, the fumes won't come off when you heat it with lighter until you heat heatshrink itself to the point when the plastic(or rubber idk)starts melting. Don't use tip of your iron to heat it. You will ruin your tip.

    • @alienJIZ1990
      @alienJIZ1990 Před 2 lety

      @@jeannesantillan7326 I actually ended up going a different route because I couldn't buy just the tip anywhere. So I bought a 65W GaN charger (higher W the better, more amps for simultaneous device charging). I then use a USB-C cable (make sure it can handle your laptop's wattage - multiply Volts x Amps if the wattage isn't listed on the original charger). Then buy a USB-C adapter to whatever size tip fits your laptop. If the tip ever breaks again, you only need to buy another USB-C to tip adapter. Or just buy several in case it happens again. Handles charging my 45W laptop and 15W phone with 5W to spare - just don't plug in 2 phones with the laptop or you'll under power it, unless you buy a very high W charger
