- The RPG, or rocket-propelled grenade, also referred to as a tank buster weapon. Many people get to know RPG through television shows and computer games which exemplify as explosive weapons that can be used to eliminate the bad guys. The ruggedness, simplicity, low cost, and effectiveness of the RPGs has made it the most widely used anti-armor weapon in the world. Currently around 40 countries use the weapon. The launcher is reloadable and based around a steel tube, 40 millimeters in diameter, 950 millimeters long, and weighing 7 kilograms. The middle of the tube is wood wrapped to protect the user from heat and the end is flared. the RPG munition has two sections: a booster section and a warhead sustainer motor section. the sustainer motor then ignites and propels the grenade for the next few seconds.

When I was in the first Gulf War, we found many RPG-7 launchers and munitions. When one of my fellow soldiers ended up dying because the RPG exploded when he decided to try firing them, I decided not to screw around with this weapon system ever again

not so much anti tank anymore lol, the armour on the newest tanks are outstanding, its like you bring a 9mm to a ntw20 fight, rpg can still do dmg to like apcs and stuff probly, i would use it for anti personal only now, and use REAL anti tank weapons aginst tanks.

For anyone wondering this is the transition from the Russian ~Ruchnoy Protivotankovyy Granatomot to handheld anti-tank grenade launcher. Rocket propelled grenade is a western name. The Soviets weren’t concerned about making acronyms in English.
The wood jacket is to stop you freezing your face to a cold barrel, not for heat protection. Remember this is a Russian weapon. You cannot fire it fast enough to heat up the barrel that much.
Fun fact…RPG doesn’t stand for rocket propelled grenade as I’m pretty sure Russians don’t generally speak and name things in English
In the US it just easier to say rocket propelled grenade they generally stand for the thing
Back on the Soviet Era they name weapon system with what type of weapon then the engineer who designed it example is AK, Avtomat (might be wrong but you get the point) Kalashnikov (The engineer that designed it)

Philippine Army solved the RPG problem by using wood planks to cover their IFV
that was a different rpg model that exploded upon impact instead of delayed penetration.
RPG does not stand for rocket propelled grenade. Since it is aeaopon of russian origin the RPG letters are russian language abreviation that stands for hand held anti tank grenade launcher.

But games always gets it wrong, developers think that it is just purely explosive and that's how it destroys vehicles but in reality it is a shaped charge and it makes a small hole after the shaped charge (or HEAT for the tank nerds) detonates, not outright obliterating an object unless the object is really that fragile.

@@belarosiyan5550or if not, the rpg7 can explode when the wood gets hit and the wood "armor" will be destroyed but not the metal armor. So the wood armor is basically like a bait for the explosion so the real armor couldnt be penetrated.

Well, I'd say these are widely used because they're cheap. Not because they're particularly effective. Especially against modern forces with drones, thermal imaging, night vision etc. Hard to ambush an enemy when they can see you long before you see them
First its a Rotation Propelled Not Rocket Propelled cos there is no fuel used in its head, just few times rotations depend how far and how much time of fuze you want as unlike rockets it wont explode on impact so thats why Most of Tanks got deflection armor for RPG's

The bazooka was an early WW2 era shoulder launched anti tank rocket system. The RPG 7 was a Russian development of the basic design.

A single average portable anti armor rocket launcher from most countries from the West costs the equivalent of several dozens of RPGs, so when poorer countries with usually poorly trained soldiers do the math, what would be more uselful: 3 guys armed with one western rocket or 50 guys armed with RPGs ? Quantity is a quality of its own.
Well, that depends. You have to get very close to use these. That's a dangerous propostion against a modern miltary with thermal imaging, night vision goggles etc. The warheads are also fairly small, and modern tanks with ERA etc will just shrug them off and return fire. Usually, the one guy with the atgm will fare much better than the 3 with rpgs. 😂😂
