White Death: The World’s Deadliest Sniper

  • A lone rifleman strikes fear into the hearts of the 750,000 invading Russians. The Finns should have been terrified, but the Finnish had something that the Russians didn’t, a humble farmer-turned-sniper named Simo Häyhä.
He pulled his old gun out of storage and waited for the Soviets. The Winter War lasted roughly 100 days, in that time, Häyhä eliminated 505 soldiers, an average of over 5 a day.
The Soviets gave him the name ‘White Death’ and he became the deadliest sniper in history.

There is one Key factor that made Simo such an excellent shot and why it is unlikely there will ever be a sniper as good as he was. It's the fact that the M28 he used was his own personal weapon which he purchased from the army after his national service. As such he had hundreds if not thousands of hours with a single rifle as such he knew every minute detail and intracy of his weapon allowing him an unprecedented level of accuracy and consistency. Modern soldiers are given a rifle for a deplyoyment or for guard duty after which it goes back to the armoury. They may never see the exact same rifle again. So while they may be very competent with the rifle at a general level they never will be quite as familliar with a single rifle which will have tiny quirks due to minute differences in forging, barrel wear and part fit.

@@TheDennys21 eh, i’d disagree. *Any* weapon can perform exceptionally, old or new. And yes, you can get aquatinted with a weapon easily, but some of the weapon’s quirks can take months or years to learn about, simply due to how subtle they may be.
When I was a Weblos Scout in the Cub Scouts of America, back in 2009-2010, my parents bought me a basic compound bow, a foam target (identical to the targets at summer camp), an armguard, a pair of lightweight shooting gloves, a plastic quiver, and 10 fiberglass, dullpoint (sport) arrows. In the summer, I’d set up the target in my backyard, and spend a few hours every weekend shooting. I did this for the next year or so, and then started to stop in 2011, after I crossed over into the Boy Scouts.
Then, when I was a Second Class scout (roughly 3-4 years after i crossed over), I took the Archery merit badge during summer camp. The camp had compound bows, and we would shoot every day, as one of the requirements for the merit badge was to “qualify” (effectively, you had to get a certain number of points, based on where your arrows hit). Over the 5 days I spent at Summer Camp, I didn’t manage to qualify, as my arrows generally only landed in the outermost ring, or outside the target completely.
A week later, my dad (the Scoutmaster of my troop) arranged for me to go back up to camp to have another shot at qualifying, this time with my equipment. I strapped the armguard and gloves on, slung my quiver on my shoulder (it was a back-worn quiver), picked up my bow, and fired the 8 arrows I’d brought (the number of arrows the requirement allowed) at the camp’s archery target.
Of those 8 arrows, 1 landed in the outer ring, 5 landed in the innermost ring, and 2 were bullseyes; more than enough points to qualify. The only difference between the bows at camp and mine, was my familiarity with my bow.
I still have that bow, my target, and those arrows today, but I don’t use them anymore. One of the arrows is actually mounted on my bedroom wall, next to my Eagle Scout medal.

    On the Winter War:
Fins Lament - "The Soviets are so many and our country so small, where will we find room to bury them all?"
    On the Third Reich:
Nazi Officer - "If there were fifty million Fins, we would share the world with you"
Finnish Officer - "If there were fifty million Fins, what makes you think WE would share anything with YOU?"
    On the Cold War:

And what are the results? Did the Finns win? Despite the initial losses, the Red Army fulfilled the task set by the front completely. The impregnable "Mannerheim Line" combined in the west was taken, the border was moved beyond the Vyborg Bay.Resigned to the fact that the USSR promised and did so. On March 7, 1940, a Finnish delegation arrived in Moscow to ask for peace. On March 15, since all the conditions were met, the USSR agreed to sign it. In 1941, with the attack of Germany and the entire German coalition, everyone was there, from the Spaniards to the Norwegians, and even Japan. And the Finns decided to continue the war basely. Well, the results of this continuation were more than modest. And until 1944, the Froth line in this direction remained static. And on September 19, 1944, Finland, having learned that a powerful Red Army group was unfolding against it, decided to capitulate. And they began to accompany their German allies with pedals and bullets to Norway.
Of course, I didn't do it so pretentiously. But it is historically true.😉

I grew up surrounded by guns and used to hunt as a teenager. I was a pretty good shot but my brother was way better. At a target there was nothing between us. But out in the woods he seen to have the ability to see things that were out of place, even the smallest thing. Another thing he was great at was scanning a patch of clover and picking the ones with 4 leaves without even bending down. I think he got it from my grandfather who used to analyse aerial photographs during WW2.

He wasn’t actually given a sniper rifle with a scope by the Finnish government. Thats just an assumption in the animation. They left out the scope from his gift rifle. There is picture of him receiving the rifle.
It was a more modern updated rifle on the mosin design with updated sights among other things that the regular army was using (his gift was just a custom accurized sniper version). Simo prefered to use his own older rifle he had purhased from the civil guard almost 20 years earlier as he knew the weapon and its particular idiosyncrazies inside out. Any sniper will tell you that a intimately familiar rifle is more prefered than a slightly improved rifle that you must spend a lot of trigger time to get accustomed to. Especially as you have to make do with service ammo that you are issued and he went straight back to the front lines. When Simo was injured his rifle was lost in the field.
And he was evacuated immediately after being shot. He was initially evaluated as a casualty at the field hospital were he was taken to and subsequantely spotted moving in the casualty line outside the tent. There are many minor discrepancies in the video like that.

Being a MN born man the snow I understand. The fact that this well disaplined man uses the snow perfectly to best advantage and then iron shots his rifle. There is much respect here this I can tell you. Great work and content. What a video. So well done by narration telling the story.

I owned and often fired a Finnish M39 rifle which is identical to Häyä's M28 and must thank you for thesd perfectly accurate sights and sight picture in the video. This is high end stuff. Thank you!
