    One of my best friends’ family won the green card lottery 20 years ago. Today her dad works as an engineer, her mom is the CEO of a company and her and her sister are studying at really prestigious colleges. And what matters even more is that they’re the most humble, helpful and kindest people I’ve ever met. They were not born here in the US but I know they love this country more than the majority of Americans. Not every single immigrant is a good person, but neither are all Americans. But saying that this lottery brings the worst of the worst people here is the biggest exaggeration and lie ever.

You can't say all the emmigrants are garbage just because one of them is...besides there are not prooves that he came here with lottery, maybe it just a reason to harden entering US. . .

    The worst of the worst? My mother is an engineer who works very hard and has been harassed over and over at the work place. She also is a business woman and practices a bit of architecture. We’ve been applying for 2 years, and nothing. this is the second year we’re applying. Hopefully it works out. My country’s economy is dying and guess who gets to benefit from it ? The U.S and many other leading countries. My country is one of the main petroleum world providers. But they would rather see my people famished and slaughtered in order to get petroleum at a cheaper price. We’re only trying to get a better life. With my mother’s skills, she could very much help the economy. She’s applied for every way to get a green card. Even applying for the one Melania Trump got, the einstein visa. How is It that a model gets one of those and a woman (my mother) who is educated, with experience and knowledge, can’t even get considered for it? She even speaks 9 languages. But can hardly get an email back from American companies jobs she applies for. She’s over qualified. But no, WE ARE THE WORST OF THE WORST. Thanks tho

      1. While a high school diploma is a prerequisite to enter, more often than not, only those with much advanced degrees will make the cut. This guy is one of an almost non-existent group of lottery-winners without advanced degrees, an even smaller subset from whom actually pass the subsequent screening.
      2. Should one win the lottery, they will not be granted a green card should they have a non-rehabilitated criminal past or a disease that could be a threat to the US.

In fact, I am from Ukraine and in my country there are plenty of really smart people like scientists, PhD owners, highly-skilled engineers, prospective students, IT specialists, etc. And since my country does not provide a proper treatment for them, they would love to work in a country that may give a hope for the better future. But, unfortunately, the green card lottery is a random lottery, so all such people have no chances to win. What is wrong with the US, is it hard to be more selective? Such lottery is a huge opportunity for the country: it can bring most intelligent "brains" from the whole world, but instead it collects worst of the worst.

    One would question the authenticity of 'random' selection that allegedly the GC process undergoes. I have applied 11 times in total, all in vain and the last two times I did it with my spouse and child. I know people who got theirs and they had absolutely no idea what America's values are, did not speak English and had no applied training or diploma besides the minimum required. The American dream is nothing but a mirage created after the depression era. What I lost is that my dreams and goals got squashed, while America gained more low IQ residents. I am talking about the majority of winners in my country. People who get back after a couple of years because they found it hard to assimilate to US culture, not knowing anything about it doesn't help. So, to recap, I highly question the purpose of the green card selection. A country as great as America should hope to bring people who will maintain its grandeur and status and not downgrade it. I hope that congress would reform and come up with an approved bill that allows only people on merit.

    I believe that instead of the 1.2 million that immigrate a year, that number needs to be reduced to anywhere between 300,000 to 500,000 and be solely given to people who have a college degree or higher instead of a high school diploma (employment based). This ensures that the incoming immigrants have the ability to support themselves, are highly educated and motivated, have a proficiency in English as well as other languages and will in their life never use a federal aid program. You need a leaner and more competitive immigration program that rewards skills. This will revitalize the US economy and ensure sustained growth over the years.

    • @V25021
      @V25021 Před 2 lety +8

      The thing about the diversity visa is that it is meant to bring in applicants who would not have otherwise been accepted to the US. If you are skilled and have a college degree, you can apply for a work visa like the H1 or O1 visa, which then allows you to apply for a green card. Of course the diversity visa will take in those who are undereducated, underprivileged, etc. It's designed to do that.

Which is unfair because an uneducated (and sometimes even an illiterate) person can just get lucky with the "Diversity Visa" while someone with a college degree and over a decade of experience is stuck in this loop.
      I would be all for the point based system where your English proficiency, college education as well as work experience would give you the right to live and work. I don't need federal aid, and jobs in my field are available all over the USA. Apparently, I was simply born in the wrong country.

The problem is, I wasn't aware I needed to have my passport ready for the application until yesterday when I went to do the application. I have recently renewed my Portuguese citizenship card but I haven't renewed my passport yet, and it would take a week for me to get my new renewed passport. How did I miss the fact that I need the passport to apply for this years' green card lottery in the first place? Because I was stupid and naive, and I regret it now! So my question is: should I put the expired passport number and date (and hope that, if I get selected, I get the chance to introduce my renewed passports' data); or should I put the same passport number with the same expiration date of my citizenship card (which would be lying)? Please, I really appreciate your help right now.

    High time the lottery has to change to an appropriate merit base and trustable human qualities selection. Get the best of the best in the world, you can eliminate “diversity visa” that doesn’t promote diversity and come to a best qualified first served.

    This video is weird. The video makers should have picked more people from non-Western/non-European countries for the study, because immigrants from Western/European countries and places like Mexico, China, and Latin America are the least likely to ever win the Diversity Visa Lottery. This is because there are already large populations of European/White, certain Asian (like Chinese), and Latin American/Latino-Hispanic immigrants in the United States. In the 21st Century, if your European, Latin American (Latino), or Chinese it’s near impossible to qualify for the Diversity Visa Program because these populations are already culturally represented in the U.S. (we already have a lot of Germans and Brits). If your from a country or ethnic group that has a small population in the United States (like Ethiopians/Eritreans, Sir Lankans) you may have a chance at qualifying for the Diversity Visa Program.

    I think the immigration should be a Fee-Based & Merit based hybrid system. Charge a 2k or 3k U$D fee to every prospect migrant (Human traffickers charge between 5k and 10k for each migrant), and conduct a Background check on each (international background checks usually take up to 20 days or something). If they have qualities like a higher education, has sufficient mastery over the language of destination, or have a desired skill, they would have discounts. Use the Fee money to finance Integration courses, vocational training and the bureaucracy it self.

    You need to really screen people and interrogate them before you let them in. Good People who have goals to accomplish here in the states. You can't just let anyone in. Let in people that are gonna provide value to your country. I know a lot of people that would wanna come here but they're intentions are not pure. This statement is coming from me(an immigrant)
