In my opinion these situations/stories are ones people need to hear and listen well. Save themselves or loved ones from being sent to any number of these places after hearing the facts. That is a serious situation that I would think not a soul anywhere would want to get themselves involved with. Thank you Tony. I really hope my notification bell goes off. I don't want to miss this one. At the time this goes live I should be getting ready for the long drive to the doctor so I'll be able to listen and get to watch.

It is NOT uncommon for funeral homes to take advantage of grieving families. There are lot's of videos on You Tube about abandoned funeral homes where the owners and/or operators who often went to prison for their crimes. Everything, including cremains and sometimes ever bodies, hearses, equipment and caskets are left behind. Interestingly, most of these funeral homes had catered to black families. Hispanic families in New York aren't a surprise being taken advantage of.
I realize that families may be grieving and scoundrels will take advantage of them, but it is important to do your homework and shop around before deciding on which funeral service to use. Remember, it's your family.
Here in Central California, it seems that the funeral industry is dominated by the Dignity Corp. Multiple funeral homes and even cemeteries. It has been my personal experience that things are on the up and up. However, eventhough these funeral organizations may be under the same umbrella, they are still operate as separate businesses. Because they are for profit businesses they may take advantage of those families grieving and will oversell and try to get you to pay for things which are useless and won't help anything.
Here's a personal story. When my father passed, I picked a local (Dignity) funeral home which my friends had used and I had been impressed with the quality of service. So, My mother, wife and I went to this funeral home. Having had a couple of friends recently pass, who were related to each other, I checked out what their families paid. We told the funeral director we wanted the same services for my father. The funeral director checked the records to confirm what we expected and obliged our requests. The deal was established but hadn't been finalized. My mother wanted to check with another funeral home that she used for her parents. It was also owned by Dignity. Well, they wanted atleast 50% more! I had suspected this might happen, but I had to honor my mother's wishes to check there. We ended up going back to the first funeral home, as my mother couldn't see spending any more money than necessary. I mean, we were never going to see my father again after his funeral, in our lifetimes.
Funeral homes, no matter which one it is, will recognize that the arranging person or family member may have a guilt complex, so they want to make sure that the deceased goes out in style. Maybe it's comforting for the grieving person to believe that they are doing the most for the deceased and that clears their conscience. They may also be making a statement to others in the attendance of the funeral that they didn't cheap out. Maybe even showing off. It's the funeral director's job to fulfill the wants and needs of the family. But, they probably won't tell the family that something would be totally unnecessary, some might. Still, you are probably never going to lay eyes on the deceased nor into what they were interred. The headstone will be the only thing to be seen later.
